Twilight Sparkle took another deep breath and then stepped out from behind a heavy red flowing curtain in front of the town hall. As she walked to the lone podium in front, she looked over the clearly excited crowd that had gathered for the annual Winter Wrap Up. The colourful mass went silent as Twilight reached her place at the podium and cleared her throat.
"Good morning everypony, and welcome to this year's Winter Wrap Up," she proclaimed proudly. A friendly murmur went through the crowd, here and there ponies cheered.
"I know there have been some irregularities last year, but this year everything is planned perfectly. Your team leaders have already been briefed and no further mix-ups should happen. Now, would the weather team please gather over there under the tree?" She pointed a hoof at a tree on the other side of the plaza. Immediately, the crowd got into motion and was quickly devoid of the weather team's blue vests.
"Great, now the animal team please gather at the bridge, and the plant team over at that banner." She pointed at the respective places and the ponies dispersed. The weather team was already on the move and a hoof full of pegasi flew off in all directions.
Twilight remained at the podium and checked her plan again. If everything went well the teams should be able to coordinate themselves now, making her role obsolete. Removal of basically unnecessary overhead, no additional layer between team-communications.
She ruffled her feathers, anxious to take to the air and to see how it all plays out, when she was interrupted by Amethyst Star, the animal team's leader.
"Princess Twilight," she said with a concerned look on her face, "we might need the time tables changed."
Twilight let her wings and ears droop, looking disappointed. "Why, what's the problem?"
"We, uhm, we are missing Fluttershy. We probably can't keep up without her. At least not with the current time table. It takes us too long to coax animals out from their dens and everything, we are going to be late."
Late— late— late— it reverberated in Twilight's head.
"Oh no no no this won't do. I'll go see where she is. You just stick to the time table as close as possible," Twilight commanded and took to the air, leaving a distraught looking Amethyst behind.
Twilight flew to Fluttershy's cottage hurriedly. All around her she saw pegasi moving clouds and leading flocks of birds and on the ground earth ponies and unicorns were tending to both flora and fauna. It calmed her a bit to see every pony springing to action quickly, everything was still covered in a thick layer of snow and ice which would require quite the amount of labour.
After a minute or two Twilight made an ungentle landing in front of Fluttershy's front door. She rapped on the door impatiently.
"Fluttershy! It's Twilight! It's Winter Wrap Up, we need you, please come out," she yelled.
Nothing stirred. She pressed her ear against the door. Nothing.
A lump of snow fell from one of the branches and she looked up.
"Right, I can fly," she thought to herself and flew up to the bedroom window. It was dark inside, the sun was just behind the horizon still, but she could see a pony-sized lump in bed under the blanket.
"Fluttershy? Fluttershy!" She yelled and pushed against the window, which surprisingly gave way. Thick and used air nearly took her breath as it escaped the room.
Twilight closed the distance to the bed and nudged the lump.
"Is everything alright? It's Twilight," and with a sudden sense of urgency she pulled off the blanket, making Fluttershy twitch. She was curled up in a ball, front hooves over her head. She opened one of her turquoise eyes just enough to look at Twilight.
Moving closer and resting her fore hooves on the edge of the mattress she looked at her friend's face.
"Fluttershy, what's wrong?" she asked concerned.
Fluttershy swallowed slowly and replied with an unusually faint and raspy voice, "I've got the worst headache ever, I'm so sorry, I know I'm letting everypony down, but I can't do it," then closed her eye again and rolled together even tighter.
Twilight sat down on the mattress next to her, massaging Fluttershy's head with a hoof, lost in thought. There was something important Celestia had shown her—or was it Zecora?
A few moments passed as she just sat there, still massaging Fluttershy's head and trying to gather her thoughts.

Twilight sighed as she let go a breath she didn't realize she held.
"At least it's something," she replied with a smile and nuzzled her still-but-much-less-under-the-weather friend.
Yet something tugged at the corner of her mind. Her gaze rose to the window through which she came in, slowly losing the smile as the realization set in. Pegasi were zooming across the sky, busy as bees, bucking or shifting clouds and leading flocks of birds. Even with all the planning she might still be needed, especially with a high-profile loss like this.
Fluttershy noticed her uneasy gaze and spoke up quietly, "I'm so sorry Twilight, I don't know how I'm going to make it up to everypony. The team needs me, and even more all the animals."
She stretched until she could reach one of the thrown-off blanket's corners and pulled it up to her neck, then looked at Twilight with big sad eyes.
Twilight had made her decision right in that moment. The teams would eventually have to learn to synchronize themselves, but her friend needed her here and now.
"You know what? Two ponies missing won't make that much of an impact, or at least shouldn't, I calculated for the usual fraction of ponies that can't participate. I'll stay and make sure you'll get better. It's what a friend does."
Twilight closed the window and the curtains so Fluttershy would have a more accommodating room to wait out her headache. Missing a chair or any other surface to sit on, she crawled on top the bed and lied down beside Fluttershy.
"Uhm… Twilight?" Fluttershy asked.
"Yes?"

Twilight thought for a moment and then slipped under the covers reluctantly. Despite lying on the floor for a few minutes it was already again heavenly warm under them.

"It's alright, I'll be fine," Fluttershy replied and closed her eyes.
"If you say so," Twilight said.
Not long and Fluttershy was asleep.

“Looks like my schedule worked perfectly. The teams did an amazing job, let's just meet up with the others and see if there were any problems,” Twilight said proudly and took a step out of the window, hovering in front of it and waiting for Fluttershy.
“Yes, let's, but perhaps taking a dip in the lake first would be prudent,” Fluttershy replied timidly, and followed her out the window.
Twilight nodded approvingly and they both flew off into the distance, excited to go meet their friends and welcome spring.
