It had been tossed around, stolen, sold, thrown, broken, fixed, used, thrown away.
It had experienced everything any creature that has ever breathed and died had. It had experienced everything that no one else had. It was just a lamp, a simple, glass lamp. It lit up any darkness like a normal lamp, and flicked off when told.
It had been there for longer than Celestia herself, when Discord was a young draconequus.
It had started out as a colorful tree.
One used by an old mare, who would study stars. It would illuminate her charts and writings in a beautiful warm light. It was just an oil lamp. Yet it had experienced great and mysterious knowledge, for that mare died, and her studies where never known. The secrets that the studies held where gone. But the lamp was there. Always there, watching the studies.
Then it became a young colts night light.
He would be used every night, then flicker off at a wisp of wind, once the young colt feel asleep. Sometimes, the colt would wake up in the middle of the night, and practice star swirls. He would mumble, “Live up to your name, mum said live up to your name.” Then finally fall asleep once again, his magic practice wearing him out. This process led up to one of the greatest wizards and unicorns known in history. It had experienced the most powerful, intelligent, talented, unicorn at its weakest, starting point, and watched him grow until he reached the zenith of his abilities. It had been sold to a young filly years after the colt, now a stallion, had grown out of it.
Still a tree, it had become another nightlight.
Belonging now to a princess, she used it to chart her fathers work, so she too, will one day chart stars and create the most beautiful skies. It witnessed the princess drift to depression and jealousy, of her perfect older sister. It witnessed the filly grow into an angry mare, always being overshadowed. Out of anger, she had thrown the lamp to the wall, shattering it to pieces. On that day, she didn't return. The lamp was taken and rebuilt when a maid had cleaned the princesses room, even thought she wouldn't be back for centuries.
It was now a fawn. It was given to a witch, who acted like an innocent, old mare. The witch had one day thrown a black matter chemical into a mix, creating a Big Bang. The hut had been churned to a new dimension. It was overwhelming. They traveled through everything, nothing, all dimensions and galaxies and universes and past the multiverse, to blankness. The witch had died, from all the power she had gathered. But the lamp, it lived. And it saw everything at once, everything that was and will be, everything that will never be, the impossible and possible, the illusion that we call reality.
Then it traveled, thousands of years into the future. To a sweet fillies room, to be used as a necklace hanger. It didn't last long in there, it had been sold accidentally. The buyer broke it, and rebuilt it into the only creature that was near knowing what the lamp was, a draconequus. It was all a coincidence, but a good one at that. It was traded by a loyal Pegasus, then given to a meek, kind mare, then taken by a young drake, to a crystal castle, to where it is today.
It stood as a nightlight, in a curious mares dorm. A princess, a powerful unicorn, sweet and young, with immense access of a whole verse she had no idea she was capable of unlocking. This was new for the lamp, this wasn't in his all-seeing moment. This was new. Everything he had been his whole life, everyone he had met, was with this princess, in her dorm. Just a lamp.
It had always been,
just a lamp.
