Ariel's life in Canterlot has perfectly happy. Comfy job, lots of money, cute marefiend top spend it on, even time with the Princesses, when he had reason to visit them. There's just one problem: hes bored out of his mind. So he does what any normal bored noble does and abandons ever pony and thing he ever cared about to go wander the nation in search of something perfect.
