Hello, wanderer. What is your name?
Cranky Doodle Donkey, eh? I can tell you’ve traveled far.
My name? I'm...Vinyl Scratch!
You need a place to stay? You can stay at my house for a little while.
Oh, think nothing of it. I have housed many over the years.
Would you mind telling your story? I mean, you don’t have to, however, it is entertainment, as there is not much I have not already done.
Ah, the Gala. Go on.
Gone? Why would she leave?
I see. A lost love is never easy. I, like you, learned the hard way.
Oh, my story? I assure you, it is worse than yours. I have lost many.
All right. I will. But I need to show you something first. Are you ready?
Hold on, I have an illusion spell changing my appearance. Let me disable it.
Do you see now? I am an alicorn.
A third princess? No, she already exists. She is destined to rule an empire. I am not the fourth, either; her coronation will come soon. I am no princess.
I am the lost Queen of Equestria, mother of Celestia and Luna. I, like my daughters, am not quite as young as I seem. I never truly had a name, being born straight from the void.
I did not leave of my will. I left for my daughters’ safety.
I could not protect them. I would only bring danger close.
From Harmony comes Chaos. From Chaos comes Harmony. Harmony cannot exist without Chaos, and Chaos cannot exist without Harmony. We are bound in eternal struggle. I do my best to subdue the fights where I can. Chaos is more aggressive than Harmony. Each of us can sense the other. Chaos was once too close to my daughters, so I left them. He now saves his power for when he finds me. Also, staying in this alicorn state is dangerous. Wait one moment.
No, I did not leave them unarmed; you see, I planted a powerful tree that grows with my magic. It bears six fruits, the most powerful of them all being a large branch of Harmony. It is Friendship. Since Friendship is basic Harmony, it had enough power to temporarily defeat Chaos. Even so, Chaos still existed, but not as much. It also defeated my younger daughter, who has recently returned to her rightful place as Princess of Equestria.
Yes, she was Nightmare Moon. When I saw the stars moving to burn away her prison, I blessed six, as Celestia has lost her connection to them, and also remembered her as her sister, which would weaken her. Also I cannot return to my daughters, as that would reveal myself to Chaos, and so entrap me in another battle; instead, I work my magic here, under the veil of an earth pony with a talent for music so I do not endanger Equestria even more than it is already. I sense that Chaos himself is stirring and will attack, searching for me, then he will simultaneously send two more. Long after that, an incredibly powerful being who feeds on magic itself will attack. I will not interfere directly unless necessary for the safety of Equestria.
Ah, no, even if I sacrifice myself, it would not work. There would be no Harmony nor Chaos, as we would both use all of our power. It would be quite boring in Equestria and all of the other lands, for that matter.
Chaos? Yes, he will be subdued temporarily again. He does not know of the Six, but he knows of the tree. I can only hope Celestia sees Chaos’ return and prepares the Six for a surprise attack, however, if things go completely wrong, I will trust Celestia and Luna. If Chaos defeats them, I will prepare myself for eternal battle.
I have no reason to keep this knowledge from anypony except my daughters, who will surely try to pull me back into the royal business as their mother and queen, which will alert Chaos, seeing me on the throne again.
Where did I come from? I have existed longer than anything else besides Chaos. We came into an empty space, and, seeing each other, decided to have a little fun. I created some land, and he added all sorts of fun little things like castles and candy, which is why we barely ever need construction. We were like brother and sister; loving, but still little fights sometimes. We got bored and wanted new life, and one day he decided he liked me, and I decided it was the only thing left. Marriage leads to the foal's carriage, I guess, and I had Celestia, Luna and a bunch of others. Celestia and Luna were the only immortal ones, and were able to make their own things, namely, the sun and moon. In doing so they got their "cutie marks," which apparently show your talent. I have no idea how those came to be.
Anyway, when Celestia created her Sun, the other ponies loved the warmth, but soon, it was too much and they were hiding behind their rocks and the like. Luna came in to cool it down, but ponies still needed light, so she created the Moon. It took a while for things to cool down, so Pegasus, my fourth, created the Weather Factory. Pegasus was quite good at science and created rain. He was particularly creative when he made her first rainbow. Then he came galloping back to me to show me how rainbows are made, stopped short, and said it looked like my mane.
Time flew by, and ponies got together, gave birth, and died, and there were no rules about it because there weren't many of us. The land thrived, but Chaos was still having fun among them, and the ponies fought. The pegasi who were in the Weather Factory grew cold toward the others, and created snow and hail, which were even colder than their rain. I created a new land, and the ponies all decided to move to try to get away from the others, but they were all there. Time healed the wound in the next generation, for the fillies saw no reason to hate the others. Only a few had been taught to hate the others. Don't listen to what Celestia put in those books and the play. She knows of Chaos and all that, and she thought she was killing two birds with one stone: calming ponies down, and giving another friendship lesson. She knows Friendship is one of the most powerful weapons we have, so she wants the ponies to have even more of it. The Windigos are peaceful creatures who helped make snow because they thought it was for what we use it for now: snowball fights and snowponies!
That's about all.
Ah, yes, yes, it is quite late, isn't it? Guest room is the third door on the right.
