Prologue
High above the tranquil skies of Equis floated a strange spacecraft. The majority of its occupants lie in a dormant sleep, and the only signs of activity resided in the ship’s ejection bay. Inside, two large spider-like lifeforms skittered about the bay, using their many slender limbs to operate various devices and machinery. They chittered amongst each other, using a language unheard of by any of the beings on the planet below.
One of the spiders paused his work and gazed into an ejection pod with his twelve eyes, silently admiring the sleeping body within. This was the closest he’d ever been to an Equestrian, and the new host species were a marvel to him.
“What do you think they’re like?” he said to his companion, who was occupied with a blinking switchboard on the other side of the bay.
“That’s what we’re sending this first wave to find out,” she replied, “just like we’ve done on planets before. It truly is exciting, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is,” he agreed. “But for the Explorers,” he said quietly, “it’s probably terrifying. I can’t imagine being placed on a new planet inhabited by potentially violent species.”
The female spider listened to her friend’s monologue as she worked to complete her task. She pressurized the remaining pods and ensured the lifeforms within them would survive their descent to the surface. She flipped a switch and watched as the pods gave off a gentle hiss, an indication that they were ready for their journey.
“It’s their job,” she said to her friend, who was still looking at the lifepod. “Being an Explorer is a noble calling, one which requires great courage.”
“This one, isn’t this her first planet?” he asked, gesturing towards the pod before him, a tone of worry in his speech.
“Indeed it is. This is the calling she chose, and we have no right to question it. It is a daunting task for a newborn soul, but I am sure she will persevere.” As she talked, the spider creature pressed a blinking light on the wall. A large hatch below the pod opened, accompanied by smooth sounds of machinery. The lifepod lowered into the chamber below, and the hatch closed shut behind it. A loud and abrupt blast of air echoed through the bay as the lifepod launched to the planet.
“After all, persevere is what us Souls have always ever done.”
