“OK. I'll stick to something more traditional for a human in Equestria.” William finished putting away the bowls. “Gotta go. I'll see you after work.”

Walking to work in the early dawn, William noticed the weather team assembling clouds for the day. It was going to be his second winter in Ponyville, and he was excited for it. “Hey, William. It went great. We lost to the other team, but Berry ended up making a sale to the bar owner. We're on for an extra barrel of cider a month now.” Cherry Fizzy was the owner of Fizzy Brewing, which supplied Ponyville and the surrounding area with ciders, ginger ale, mead and beer.
“I'm glad we bought those extra apples when we had the chance.” William went to the back and began preparing to check the progress of various fermentations, and found Berry Punch working on the yeast cultures.
“Hey, Berry. Fizz told me about your sale last night. I hope you'll get a bigger bonus for Hearth's Warming.”
“That would be nice. Maybe you could mention that to him sometime,” Berry sounded hopeful. She was raising a daughter on her own, and extra bits were always appreciated.
The three ponies worked the morning away on various aspects of brewing and packaging their products. When mid-day came, William took his break to see Rarity.

William arrived at the Carousel Boutique and entered, the door bell ringing overhead.
“Welcome to Carousel Boutique. I'll be right out,” Rarity called from somewhere in back.
“Take your time, Rarity,” William answered. He looked at the various dresses and other pony clothes on display, and noted that most of the colors were shades of gray, blue, and a surprising amount of purple.
Rarity finished her business and came to the store's front. “Oh, hello, William. It is a pleasure to see you. What brings you in today?”
William looked up from inspecting the winter outfits. “The new line looks nice. Well colored for the cold season. I came by to see about a warmer winter coat. I was thinking something long, maybe wool with a nice lining.”
“Oh, I have just the thing! It's inspired by the latest fashions from Prance,” Rarity excitedly replied.
“I was thinking something more traditional; something I can wear for several winters and not be out of style,” William countered, remembering Belle's earlier suggestion.
Rarity visually deflated. “Very well, I can do normal, too.” She thought for a minute, tapping a hoof on her face. “Ah-ha! Come to the back, and I'll get your measurements.” She led William to the fitting area, and stood him in front of a set of mirrors. “Yes, I have just the thing. It will be traditional, but still fashionable. Can't have one of my most unique customers walking around looking frumpy.”
William obediently followed her instructions for several minutes before speaking again. “Rarity, I want to talk to you about something. Can I take you to lunch after this?”
“Well, yes, I can close up for lunch. Is everything OK?” She questioned, mildly concerned.
William replied, “It's fine; great, even. I just wanted to ask about some Equestrian customs I'm not very familiar with.” They finished the measurements, and Rarity locked the door on their way out.
Things were tight in the cafe since the patio was closed for the winter, but William was able to find a corner table by a window. They ordered lunch and sipped on their drinks.
“So, what did you want to know about Equestrian customs?” Rarity prompted, sipping on her tea. “You've lived here for more than a year; it must be something rather unusual.”
William swirled his coffee and sighed. “I'll be upfront. I want to ask Blue Belle to marry me, but I'm not sure how to do it. I know that unicorns wear rings, and some pegasi exchange primary feathers. But I've never seen earth ponies do any outward displays like that. On earth, we exchange rings, but we wear them on our fingers. I'm just not sure what to do.”
Rarity beamed, and quickly replied, “William, that is positively wonderful! Does she have any idea? I know you've been seeing each other for almost a year. Are you thinking of asking on your anniversary?”
William chuckled and smiled at Rarity, “Thank you. I don't think she suspects it, really. We've talked about some long-term things, but not really about marriage. We make a really good team, though, and I want to be her husband. It feels like the right thing to do, and the right time to do it. Since we're not exactly a normal couple, I wanted to blend Earth and Equestrian traditions. I'm gonna try to get us to see her mom for Hearth's Warming this year, so I might clear it with Peachy first.”
The plates were delivered, and Rarity poked at her salad, thinking. After a minute she said, “Well, it is true that earth ponies typically don't exchange anything physical, but they do have a big ceremony with their families. As you know, earth pony extended families can be quite large, so it's quite nice to stand up in front of everypony and promise your life and devotion to another pony.”
“But what about when earth ponies and unicorns get married? What do they do?” William asked the obvious question.
“They mix the traditions. Big family gathering, the unicorn gets a ring, and everypony hopefully lives happily ever after. Maybe you can do something like that. I can refer you to a great jeweler here in town.”
“Thanks, Rarity. You've really given me a lot to think about.” They finished their lunch left the cafe.
“I'm glad to be of assistance. Come by in a couple of days for a fitting for your coat. And don't hesitate to ask about any other planning.” Rarity quickly hugged William, and went back to the Boutique.
William spent the afternoon at the brewery crushing apples for cider, and thinking of ways to propose to his mare.

William was laying on the couch and reading a book when Belle got home.
“Hi, honey,” she greeted him. She stopped at the entry to clean off her hooves.
He asked, “Anything exciting happen at the flower shop?”

William looked down at her and noticed the cheeky grin she was giving him. “It's the brightest purple. I was going for something more gray, but she convinced me purple would match your coat color. It has a white fur-lined collar, and she did convince me to get a big hat. And a cane, too. I'll look quite dapper.”
Belle scrunched up her face and looked him in the eye, unsure whether or not to believe that her normally conservative man would really dress that way. “You're not serious, are you?” He grinned, and she poked him with a hoof. “Psh...Silly. But I'm sure that you will look good in it.”
William laughed and brought up her hoof to kiss it. “It's normal; no worries. But I wanted to talk about our Hearth's Warming plans. I want to meet your family. What say we go to Hoofington and spend the holiday with your mom and sisters?”
Belle looked away and chewed her lip for as she considered the idea. Her mother knew that she was dating someone, and that they were living together now. “Thanks, Glory. Sorry we're late; something came up.” William was able to keep a straight face.

Starshine greeted the couple with a quick hug and kiss. “Did y'all see the clouds today? We had to bring some in from the reservoir just to make it dark enough. There's gonna be another snowfall tonight. It should be another hoof or so; nothing too much. It's still early in the season”
While Blue Belle ordered their drinks, William thought back to the first time he met Starshine. He had just arrived at Ponyville station on the morning train from Canterlot. She was flying overhead, moving clouds around. When she saw him, she abandoned her cloud and flew down to say hello. Twilight wasn't at the train station yet, so he'd been on his own. The waiter was fast; he delivered their drinks and appetizer, and took the dinner orders with great skill. William ordered another drink and quickly caught up to Glory and Starshine. He remembered again that one of the great things about having no cars was that a pony...man...couldn't get arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. The cider in Equestria was very good.
“And so I'm just staying here.” Glory finished her story.
William nodded dutifully and looked at his mug. The cider was good, but he cursed the small size of the servings. Belle noticed his look, and placed a hoof on his thigh.
“It's OK, Belle,” William reassured her.
Belle shared their holiday plans. “We're going to Hoofington, to meet my family,” she became visibly tense, but continued. “My mom or sisters don't know everything about William yet, so that should be an adventure.” She sipped on her drink, and looked at Starshine.
“I'm sure they'll like him, Belle. I've never seen you happier than when the two of you are together. And it's not like he's a giant dragon or manticore or something totally weird. He speaks our language and eats mostly the same things as us.” Starshine could always be counted on to give positive thoughts.
Dinner came, and with it a glass of mead. William was feeling pretty loose now, and began to voice his thoughts more often. He was in a happy mood, and wanted to share it with the group.
“Blue Belle, have I every told you how much I love you?” He wasn't quite slurring his words, but the three mares knew that was only another drink or two away.
Belle laughed and pushed on his shoulder. “Yeah, handsome, you've told me a time or two. I love you, too.”
He wasn't quite done yet, though. He really loved her, and wanted everypony to know. “Girls, really, she is the most amazing mare in Equestria. Present company excluded, of course.” He was very considerate. “I don't know what I'd do without her. Probably be stuck in that old room with Noteworthy and his guitar. Heh...he was always writing something. This soup is really good.” He focused on his dinner for a few minutes.
Belle blushed slightly, but got sympathetic smiles from her friends.
“I'm going back to Cloudsdale to see family there,” Starshine continued the conversation. “A couple of cousins I've never met are coming in for the holiday. It'll be great to see them.”
They finished the main course, and the waiter brought a desert cart by.
“The special for tonight is lemon cake with a wonderful dandelion glaze. It's sweet, but not overly rich. Would you care for a piece?” the waiter asked.
Belle and Glory accepted the offer. Starshine asked for a coffee, and William ordered a cider for a nightcap. The waiter brought the orders and the check, and the ponies dug into desert.
“This cake is great. Have a bite, William,” Belle said, offering a forked morsel.
William bit into it, agreeing, “Oh, that is good.” He swallowed and kissed her on the cheek. “Thanks, my sweet flower.”
He finished his cider, and was about to order another. Belle stopped him before he placed the order, though.
“Honey, let's go home. I still have to write mom, remember?”
William nodded, and simply paid the waiter.
He stood up and said, “Ladies, thank you for coming to dinner. Belle and I have to take our leave, though. I bid you good night.” He bowed and then hugged them before leading Belle outside.
She walked close to him; both for the warmth of his presence and to keep him steady. “I'm proud of you, honey. You did really well tonight.”
William didn't respond immediately, but simply brushed a hand through her mane, paying attention to how her hair felt as it flowed through his fingers. She really was a beautiful pony. He wasn't always sure what she saw in him, but he loved her for it. He looked up at the moon; it appeared crystal clear in the cold sky. The air stung his nostrils as he inhaled through his nose, and he saw his breath escape in great clouds of steam as he exhaled from his mouth. He stopped walking, and knelt down in the thin snow so he could be at eye level with her. He looked straight into her eyes and paused.

William stood up and dusted the snow off his knees. “Race ya!” he cried out, and took off running.

The race back was fast, but Belle pulled ahead of him at the last stretch and tapped a hoof on the door first.
“I win!” she announced.
“Whew. You did. You and your freaky earth pony magic,” William conceded defeat. “That means I make the hot chocolate.”
Belle wrote her mother about holiday plans as she sipped her hot chocolate. It even had tiny marshmallows. After sealing the envelope and putting it by her things for the next day, she collected William from the couch and took him to bed for the promised snuggles.

“Hello, William.” Rarity was in the display area when William entered the Boutique. “I have the coat practically finished. Would you like to do the final fitting?”

“This is really nice. The wool is so soft, and the lining is shimmery and smooth.” He unbuttoned the coat and looked at an elastic piece going around the inside at waist level, with buttons at the front. “Is this a snow skirt?”
“You know what it is?” she looked a little disappointed. “Humph. I thought I'd invented something. Ponies don't use that kind of thing.”
“It's perfect. Thank you, Rarity,” William said.
She hummed quietly and marked a couple of minor alterations with chalk.
“So, have you thought of a romantic way to propose to Blue Belle?”
“I think so. Our anniversary is a week before Hearth's Warming, but we're traveling that day to Hoofington. I really want to meet her mom before I propose, so asking on our anniversary is out. Maybe on Hearth's Warming day, with her family there. But I don't want her to feel pressured by the situation. What do you think? Would you feel uncomfortable in that position?”
She thought for a minute. “I wouldn't say uncomfortable, exactly, but it is a big decision. Will she not feel relaxed and safe with them around? It's not like you will be asking her in front of hundreds of strangers at a Wonderbolts performance. I think the setting will be fine. But what about your ring custom? Have you any thoughts on that?”
“Oh, yeah!” He brightened. “Belle doesn't usually wear earrings or jewelry, but I was thinking about getting a ring to braid in her mane. Maybe a gold band, with a stone that complements her mane color.”
“That does sound rather nice. As for colors, I think the gold will complement her purple quite nicely. And diamonds always look beautiful.” She picked up a business card and wrote her name on the back, then passed it to him. “This is my jeweler friend, Carving Gem. Give him this card and tell him what you're planning. Now, let me have the coat. I'll have it ready for you tomorrow afternoon.”
William took it off and let her take it in her magic. “Rarity, I really appreciate your advice. You've been a great help.”
“Pish posh. Seeing happy couples and helping friends is a pleasure. Go see the jeweler.”
“OK. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon. Thanks again, Rarity.”
William made the short walk to the jeweler's store. He opened the door and saw a moderate sized shop with display counters on three sides. Various brooches, necklaces, horn rings, and other types of pony adornments were displayed both in the cases and on wall mounts. There was an astounding variety of gemstones as well as metals used for the settings. A middle aged unicorn greeted him. Carving Gem had a light green coat and sandy blond mane, with a large dark green cracked rhombus gemstone for a cutie mark. He wore a jeweler's loupe on a silver chain around his neck.
“Well hello, sir. I am Carving Gem. What can I do for you?” he asked.
William handed him the card. “My name is William Bevon. Miss Rarity sent me here; she said you could help with a ring.”
“You've come to the right place, young stallion...err,” he tapered off.
“Man,” William supplied. “Mr. Gem, I've fallen in love with a mare, and want to ask her to marry me. On Earth, my original home, the man offers a ring. But Blue Belle is an earth pony, so that's not how it's done here. I'm trying to blend the two customs, and I was thinking of a ring which could be braided into her mane.”
Carving Gem smiled and said, “That sounds wonderful! Call me Carving. Blending customs, eh? I can help with that. Tell me about her, and we will design something.”
William described Blue Belle, and the unicorn took careful notes. Carving occasionally made remarks like, “Stars for a cutie mark, hmm?”, and “Flowers are her specialty?” and, “Hmm, yes. I see.” Eventually, he had enough for a sketch, which he presented for William's opinion.
Carving said, “It's not a ring, precisely, but it is circular, which has significance here in Equestria.”
“On Earth, it means unending love,” William said.
“The same here. Hmm. Now for the settings, I think diamonds in a small flower shape will be appropriate. It shouldn't be too big or flashy; she should to want to wear it regularly. I'll do some research to find out what kind of flower will be best. When do you need it?”
William counted days on his fingers, and replied, “Is two weeks enough? We're going to her family's house the week before the holiday, and I'm thinking of asking her then.”
Carving replied, “That's enough time. I'll need a small deposit today. Come back in a few days and I'll have a selection of flower types I think will work.”
After paying the deposit, William offered his hand and said, “Thank you very much, Carving. This is gonna be great!”
Carving looked down for a second, then took the hand in a hoof and shook it. “I hope everything works out for the two of you.”

Belle hummed a quiet song as she worked the soil in the greenhouse. Snow covered everything except the streets and high-use paths in Ponyville, but the air in here was kept warm and humid throughout the winter. Roseluck's flower shop was the biggest in town, and her idea about the rental space was working out better than she imagined. Space sold out within a week. Belle had to give credit to the ponies of her town-they were industrious. She was currently transferring a pot of amaranth pink hibiscus to a larger container to give them more room as they grew. It was important to let them expand, or they became choked and didn't reach their full potential. She thought back to when she found these flowers. It was the previous spring on a walk through the outskirts of the Everfree. It was the first time she had brought William on one of her trips since they started dating. Flowers weren’t his specialty, but he was interested in learning about them as well as spending time with her.
Roseluck poked her head into the room and asked, “Belle, when you're done with that, can you help with some bouquet orders? We have three to get ready this afternoon.”
“Sure, Roseluck. I'm just about done here,” she answered. Belle finished getting the flowers set up in their new homes and cleaned up her trowel and other materials. Once in the main building, she reviewed the orders Roseluck gave her and started assembling the flowers.
“So, the weekend's almost here. Do you and William have plans?” Roseluck asked.
“Nothing too big, I guess. He wants to go for a walk in the woods. That'll be fun. And we might go out Saturday night. There's a band from Manehattan playing at the Frog and Minnow. I'll try and get him to dance,” Belle responded.
“Hah. Getting stallions to dance is easy. Just keep their cider mugs full and you have to drag them off the dance floor,” Roseluck said.
Belle thought for a second before replying, “Yeah. He is quite the dancer when he's had a few ciders. But he gets kind of lost, you know? It's like his brain goes somewhere else, and he forgets where he is.”
Roseluck put down her trimming knife and looked at Belle. “Is he OK? Does he have a problem with the hard cider?”
Belle laughed and said, “No, it's nothing serious. It's just he sometimes doesn't stop when he starts. I'm probably just exaggerating.” She pointed at her arrangement. “What do you think? I wonder who Cherilee's getting these for, anyway.”
“That looks great. I don't know who they're for. She didn't order a card with it; maybe they're just hers.” Roseluck wasn't so easily diverted, though. “Really, Belle, if you ever want to talk about it, I'm here for you. He seems nice enough, but I don't want you to get hurt.”
“Thanks, Roseluck. He is a great guy. Do you know what he said to me the other night?”
Roseluck responded, “No, what?”
“He told me he thought I would make a good mother. There are obvious challenges to that ever happening, but Roseluck, he actually thinks of me that way.”
“Really?” Roseluck let some excitement creep into her voice. “Belle, that's pretty big. I mean, I'm not sure how the foals part would work, but that means he's probably thinking long term.”
“I know. I'm pretty excited, but a little nervous, you know? This is the furthest in a relationship I've been, and I'd hate for something to mess it up.” Belle adjusted the flowers in the second arrangement.
“Belle, try not to think about messing up. He must love you the way you are, so just keep doing what you're doing now,” Roseluck said.
Belle finished the second arrangement. “Hey, why don't you come out with us Saturday night? It'll be fun.”
“Nah, I have some stuff to do at home. I'd just be a third wheel anyway,” she countered.
“'Stuff at home,' huh? Come with us. I can have William invite Noteworthy if you want,” Belle offered.
Roseluck relented,“Alright, ya got me. I'll come. Isn't Noteworthy the musician? Are you sure he's not already going with somepony?”
“He's still single as far as I know. It'll be fine. Come by the house at eight, and we'll head over together. We'll have a good time,” Belle promised.
“OK,” she said.
The front door opened, and Cherilee came in to collect her arrangement. “Good afternoon, ladies,” she said.

Roseluck heard guitar and singing as she approached Belle and William's house. Her knock was answered with a “Door's open, come on in” shouted from inside. She walked in to find Belle, William, and Noteworthy finishing a song. Belle made room on the couch, and Roseluck sat down after hanging her scarf on a hook by the door.
William set the guitar aside and introduced his friend. “Roseluck, this is Noteworthy. He was my roommate when I first moved to Ponyville.”
Noteworthy stood up and shook Roseluck's hoof. He was an earth pony with a light blue coat, rough-cut dark blue mane, and had musical notes for a cutie mark. “Somepony had to take him in. We can't have alien vagrants running around Ponyville. I'm pleased to meet you.”
“It's good to meet you, Noteworthy. Belle always says good things about you,” Roseluck replied. She thought his amber eyes were very warm.
“Since everypony's here, why don't we head to the pub?” Belle asked.
The walk to the Frog and Minnow went quickly. The pub was mostly full, but the group found an open table in the center of the second row. Belle scooted her stool close to William, and he put an arm around her. The band was just coming on stage.
“What's the name of the band, anyway?” Roseluck asked.
“Golden Slumber and the Paperclips. They're pretty big in Manehattan. This is the first time they've played here, though,” William supplied. “We have their debut album at home.”
A server came to their table and took their order. Hard ciders for Noteworthy and Roseluck, fresh cider for William and Bell, and a basket of hay fries and sweet potato chips for everyone. Hay fries were a bit too rough for William, but he thought the chips were great snacks. The band started up their first song, a fast blues piece called “Move Over”. William realized that if he closed his eyes, he could be listening to a band in a bar on Earth.
“I didn't realize you were so in to Equestrian music, William,” Roseluck stated.
“It's fascinating to me,” William replied. “The music here is very similar to music back on Earth. I'm still amazed that ponies can use hooves to play seemingly complicated instruments, but they do it very well. I only heard the orchestral kind of music when I was in Canterlot. It's nice, but I prefer more variety. It was Noteworthy here who introduced me to the more modern-sounding stuff.”
The server came back to the table with their orders, and Noteworthy offered a toast. “Here's to good friends and good music.” They clunked their wooden mugs and drank.
Belle continued, “William loves music. He's bought more records since he's been here than I did my whole life. If he keeps it up, we're going to have to add a room to the house. He said that they have devices on Earth that can hold thousands of songs in a box smaller than your hoof.”
“How is that even possible? The records must be very tiny,” Roseluck said.
William chuckled and said, “It's not records, exactly. I can't really explain in full detail, but the music is saved on a small disc. I'm sure pony scientists will figure out how to do it someday. Then watch out for the digital revolution.”
Noteworthy joined in. “Every time you bring this thing up, I can't help but worry about my job. What about my record store?”
“Don't worry yet.” William patted Noteworthy's shoulder. “I'm sure ponies will still want vinyl. Maybe you can diversify.” Noteworthy stared at the band for a minute, and drank his cider. The band segued into their second song, which Golden Slumber introduced as “Outskirts of Town”.
William munched on a chip and shifted direction. “Roseluck, you should see the flower Belle found yesterday in the woods. We were pretty deep; there weren't any pony paths. We came into a clearing, and these beautiful flowers were poking through the snow. Belle said she hadn't seen anything like them before. We dug up a couple and took them back to the house.”
Roseluck brightened. “Oh? I'd love to see it. What does it look like?”
Belle expounded, “It's a small bluish-white flower, and it has six thin petals. The stalk is about knee high, and it comes from a bulb. I didn't know there were any flowers that bloomed here early in winter. We didn't have anything like it in Hoofington. I'm going by the new library Monday to see if it's in the books. Come by next week and I'll show it to you.”
Noteworthy finished his cider and set the mug down with a thunk. “Roseluck, dance with me.” He took her hoof and led her to the dance floor. She tossed a grin back at Belle before joining him in the slow beat of the song.
Belle stood up and poked William in the side. “Come on, let's dance. Wiggle your hips for me.” William stuck his tongue, but followed her. They found a spot and joined in.
“You always look so good out here, Belle,” William remarked. “I've never enjoyed dancing like I do with you.”
“Aww, honey, I'm just happy that you come out with me. I know it's kinda weird for you, but it means a lot that you do it anyway.”
They finished the dance and went back to the table. The server brought another round for Roseluck and Noteworthy, and topped off the mugs of fresh cider for William and Belle.
“Belle,” Roseluck was laughing, “You never told me Noteworthy is a dancer as well as a musician.”
“He is a stallion of many talents,” she replied. “Just watch out if he offers to fix something around your house.”
Noteworthy scoffed, “That was one time. And the landlord said he'd seen worse accidents.”
The band continued to play as the night went on, and the group made small talk and enjoyed more ciders while listening to the energetic music.
Roseluck leaned up against Noteworthy and asked, “Hey, wanna dance some more?”
“I thought you'd never ask, pretty flower.”
They slid their mugs to the center of the table, and their bodies onto the dance floor. The two ponies leaned against each other for support and stepped in slow circles.
“They're getting along pretty good,” William observed.
Belle laughed and replied, “They would be a mess together. You know she's kinda uptight about a lot of things, and I swear he's a pegasus without wings.”
Finally, Golden Slumber made an announcement.
“You ponies have been a wonderful audience. Thanks for the great welcome to Ponyville. We'd like to play one more song tonight; a debut. This one's called 'Turn Over a New Leaf'. Go ahead and bring your special somepony out front one more time.”
William held a hand out to Belle and asked, “Would you do me the honor, madam?”
“It will be my pleasure, monsieur.”
When they got to the dance floor, Belle reared back on her hind legs and put her forelegs around William's chest, resting her head under his chin.
“You're getting better at this,” William complemented, and wrapped his arms around her. They danced in a slow circle to the soulful promise of the song.
“Mom always said practice makes perfect. And I like this practice.” She patted his butt and giggled.
“Eep!” he feigned surprise, and tickled her on the ribs.
“Want to try a turn?” He asked.
“OK. Don't let me fall.”
She released him, and raised up her right foreleg. He positioned a finger in the center of her raised hoof to give her a pivot point, and she turned, shifting weight from one rear hoof to the other. William steadied her with his left hand as she finished, and pulled her close again.
“Whew,” she let out the breath she was holding.
“That was great. Have you been practicing without me?”
“No, not at all.” Her coy grin said otherwise. William kissed her on the mouth. She leaned in to the kiss with her own passion, demonstrating her love by licking along his teeth. The song ended, and they parted lips.
“Thank you for the dance, handsome,” she said, and settled back to four legs.
“You make it worthwhile,” he returned.
They made their way back to the table and joined up with Noteworthy and Roseluck.
“Belle, thanks for inviting me out tonight. The band was great; much better than the other stuff I was going to do,” Roseluck said.
“You're welcome, Roseluck,” Belle replied. “It's nice to have friends along.”
“You guys want to stick around? I'm gonna stay for a little longer,” Noteworthy asked.
“Sure, I'm down for more,” William agreed. Darts, anypony?”
“Mares versus stallions, 501,” Belle challenged, and took up the first round.
The mares fought a valiant battle, but lost two out of three. After that, the group decided to call it a night.
“Thanks for coming out with us, Roseluck. I had a lot of fun,” Belle said, and hugged her good night.
Roseluck finished tying her scarf, turned to William, and shook his hand. She said, “I almost had you on that last game. You're lucky I am a bit stumbly right now. And your freaky arms get you closer to the board.”
“We'll have to have a re-match,” he offered.
William bumped Noteworthy's hoof. “Great game of darts there, bro. You should talk to Fizz about a team opening.”
“No way, man. I just play for fun. That league stuff puts too much pressure on a pony, you know?”
William laughed and said, “Yeah. I'll see you later, Noteworthy.”
Noteworthy patted Belle on the withers. “Have a good night, Blue Belle.”
“You too, Noteworthy. Don't get lost on the way home.” She booped him on the nose.
Noteworthy turned to Roseluck and asked, “Mind if I walk you home?”
“That would be nice.”
They all parted, each heading home for the night. The air was cold, and it had been snowing since sunset.
William and Belle blazed their own path through the soft snow on their way back home. Belle noticed a large undisturbed patch of whiteness at the beginning of their block. She cantered up to it, turned around, and flopped onto her back.
“William, let's make snow angels.”
Laughing, he joined her and made his own, making sure to let the wings of his angel touch the wings of Belle's. When he was done, he rolled over and noticed how the snow catching in her mane reflected the the glow from the streetlight.
“Twinkling stars for my angel.” He reached out and brushed several stars through the purple nebula.
She took his hand with a hoof, and kissed his palm.
“I had a good time tonight, seeing the band with you,” she said. He smiled in response, and the look in his eyes told her what he felt.
After a few more seconds, William kissed her on the nose and said, “If we stay here too long, we're gonna actually be angels.” He helped her to her hooves, and they admired the strange looking creations which would be buried by morning.
“They make quite a pair,” she remarked.
“Happiest angels I've seen.”
They finished the walk pressed together, looking forward to being in the warm house with only the company of each other.
When they arrived home, each was a bit damp; Belle a bit more so because she could not shrug off her cold, wet, garments like William could. She started drying her hooves as he stoked the fire. He finished quickly and came back to the entry, where he took the towel from her and continued.
“I think it's time for a bath. Do you want to join me?” he asked.
“That sounds nice.”
He finished drying her off enough that she wouldn't drip as they made their way to the bath. William started the water, and had Belle get in first.
“Here you go,” he put a heap of bubble bath flakes in the water. “I'll be right back. Don't go anywhere.”
She laid back with closed eyes and enjoyed the warm bubbly water rising up along her body. Minutes passed. She sat up and turned off the water, noticing how the room was now full of steam, then leaned back and closed her eyes again. The warm wetness of steamy air filled her nostrils, and was augmented by the scent of lavender and vanilla from something. She heard the door open as William returned. Suddenly the overhead light went out, its brightness replaced by the quiet glow of several scented candles. She opened her eyes and saw him setting down two trays: one with the candles, and another with tea service for two. He poured two cups before getting undressed.

He squeezed his arms a little tighter, and spoke close into her ear, “I don't want to go back. My family probably thinks I'm dead. I miss my sister and my parents.” He kissed behind her ear, and rubbed its cartilage with his nose. “One of the things we believe is that a man should leave his parents and start his own family. I'm about half way there. I think I am home.” He kissed her again-a long, lingering contact, and left his lips pressed against her hair for several breaths.
Belle scooted up into a sitting position and sipped on her lukewarm tea. She replaced the cup onto the saucer and said, “Come on, cowboy.”
They stood up and stepped onto the bathmat by the tub. William untied her hair, and wrapped it in a large towel as she dried her face and front legs. Mane complete, he wrapped her tail with another towel and started on her back and rear legs with a third. He was just finishing when she turned to face him, towel in the crook of one leg, and a smile upon her face.
