With the sound of clattering in the background, you slowly stirred from your slumber. When you awoke, you felt your head and body ached with a throbbing pain. You heard the sounds of somponies talking next to a boiling cauldron. You then looked around to discover that you're in a cot within Zecora's hut.

You looked over to the cauldron to see Twilight, Rainbow and another yellow pegasus mare that was with them. When you started to focus your eyes, you were able to identify the other mare as your dear friend Fluttershy. When they heard your move about, she was the first to look to you.

“Nito, you’re awake! How are you feeling?” she spoke, as she walked over you.
“Um…yeah, I'm okay,” you said, as looked around the room. “Wait, where’s Zecora? What happened with the manticore?”

Fluttershy pointed to the cot beside you. There you saw Zecora who looked rather weak. However, when she saw you, she was able to manage to give you a small smile.

“Zecora...are you okay?” you asked with concern.
“My everything aches...what did I partake?” she asked, a bit dizzy from the attack.
“We gave you some anti-venom to cure the manticore’s poison,” stated Twilight.
“Oh, that is right…the beast we did fight. The beast attacked us two...and how to fare you friend Nito?” she asked with earnest concern.
Twilight placed a hoof on your shoulder and gave an assuring smile.
“He’ll be fine, Zecora. He’s just a little weak as a side effect from the potion he took,” Twilight explained. “When it wore off, it drained most of his strength, but he’ll recover.”
“But what about that manticore?” you asked.
“We sent that thing packing,” grinned Rainbow.
“You did? But how’d you even find us?”
“When I heard the manticore's roar, I quickly used my tracking spell to locate you, and I teleported us to where you were,” answered Twilight.
“I see…”
“He saved me. So I say… he is my hero today…” Zecora smiled.
But when you saw her smile, you hung your head at the fact of how helpless you were.
“Some hero...I couldn't even protect my friend,” you sighed.
You felt her hoof touch your hand. You looked to see the sincere gratitude in her eyes.
“It took courage to do what you did. If you hadn’t, I might’ve been dead. You risked your life for me Nito...and for that I truly thank you,” she softly spoke.
Her words of praise seemed to make you feel strangely better.
“I guess…”
“At any rate, you’ll need to rest for a few days to regain your strength Zecora,” stated Fluttershy.
“Thank you, dear Fluttershy. By the way, is there a scar on my side?” Zecora asked.
Fluttershy inspected her body.
“Umm...yes. Just a small one from where you were stung,” she replied.
“And did this affliction come with infection?”
“No, thank Celestia we got to you in time,” Fluttershy stated.
Zecora replied with a relieved sigh.
“Luck and bravery; they have both saved me.”
“I’ll be back tomorrow to help you out while you recover, Zecora,” smiled Fluttershy.
Zecora nodded in response. It was then something stirred inside you, a desire- no a need to help.
“Umm...would it be okay if I...umm...helped too?” you timidly asked.
They both looked at you in surprise. Zecora though her expression was unreadable, in her eyes you thought you saw a glimmer of happiness. She then gave a warm smile.
“If that is what you want brave Nito, I haven’t the heart to say no,” answered Zecora.
However, Fluttershy looked at you with concern.
“Are you sure, Nito?” she asked.
“I’m sure Fluttershy. I feel she was hurt because of me. So it’s only right to help,” you stated.
“Which is why I said ‘yes’ to you. For you are a gentleman true,” Zecora mentioned.
That brought a smile to your face.
“Thank you Zecora,” you said.
“Still I have you to thank…you deserve a reward I think.”
“Reward? I...umm...okay,”
She leaned over to you gave you an innocent kiss on the cheek. You immediately felt your face heat up.
“I...um...uh...” you stuttered.
You soon heard the girls giggle at your reaction. Zecora let out a tired yawn.
“Unless there is something else; I feel I should get some rest,” she spoke.
“Okay, Zecora,” Twilight said, as she helped you to your feet. “Come on lover boy.”
You felt your face heat up again.
“Y-Yeah...see ya tomorrow Zecora,” you said, as you rubbed the back of the neck.
As they all begin to leave, Zecora began to drift off to sleep. As you look back, you can’t help but noticed the small smile she had.
Hmm…she does have a cute smile,’ you said as you walked out.

The next day, you and Fluttershy were helping out around Zecora’s home. Though she was moving around, it was apparent that Zecora was still weak from the poison.

“So what can I do for you Zecora?” you asked.
“A simple errand not too hard, for now, I need that copper jar,” she spoke, as she pointed to the jar on the table.
“You got it!”

You quickly made your way over to get it and brought it back to her. You then saw her pour the content into the boiling pot.

“Are you making a potion or something?” you asked.
“Not quite, it’s just a very modest brew. A little something to boost energy for me and you. Come closer, and you’ll see, that it's my true favorite tea,” she spoke, with a small chuckle. “But a potion will be soon made, and will need testing by someone brave.”
“I dunno, Zecora… The last time I took a potion…well, you got hurt because I was too reckless,” you sighed.
To this Zecora merely shook her head.
“None of that Nito, I have faith in you. A mistake was made, and its price was paid. But we are here after it all; before we stand, we must first fall.”
“But I-”
Your protests were silenced by her soft hoof pressed against your lips. She looked to you and gave a caring smile.
“Not a single one of us is perfect this is true. To make some mistakes is a fate we are all subject to.”

As you gaze into her lipid pools of cyan, the weight of her words sunk in. You were genuinely marveled at how astute she was.

“I see…you’re very wise, Zecora,” you complimented.
“All I do is merely wait and listen, while others stand poised to quicken.”
“Hmm…too true.”

You heard a soft giggle come from the other side of the room. You look to see Fluttershy, who had cupped a hoof over her mouth, watching the two of you.

"Oh, my. You two seem to be getting along well,” she mentioned.
“I do enjoy his company Fluttershy. He is a rather kind and unique guy,” Zecora responded.
“And you’re a fascinating mare as well Zecora. You seem to have some sort of mystic charm about you,” you honestly spoke.
This got a faint blush from the zebra mare.
“Rumors of my charms won’t do; I’ve put no spell on you.”
“Well, what I meant was that you seem to have an exotic vibe to you,” you explained.
“Such a bold charmer you are Nito,” she said with a wink. “Trying to test the waters, are you?”
“Well I try…” you blushed.
“You intend to try that I see. Now may I ask why with me?” she asked, as she took a step closer.

As she moved closer, you could see that she eagerly awaited your reply. You didn’t quite know why either. It just seemed to be natural with her than when you tried to flirt with other mares. With Zecora, you just seemed more relaxed.

“Well, Twilight said it’d be a good way for me to meet new ponies. Though it does deviate from her original teachings,” you explained.
“So, you have a flirty side? By that, I think I can abide,” Zecora said as she walked past you to grab something.

You felt her briefly brush her tail over your hand, which caused a shiver up your spine. Though it was brief, you knew that it was deliberate.

“Are you teasing me Zecora?”
She looked back at you with a sly grin.
“No, I’m not teasing; but rather I’m tempting.”
That actually caught you off guard.
“You are? But why would you-”

All she did was give you a flirtatious wink and went back to getting her item. With that, you were flustered as you’ve never had a mare so that kind of interest in you.

“Umm...hey Fluttershy did you need some help in there?” you asked, trying not to seem flustered.
“Oh yes, I’m just about ready to start lunch,” she stated.
“Be there in a sec.”
As you made your way over to Fluttershy, you heard Zecora lightly chuckle at your antics.
Smooth, Nito…

Later that night, as you and Fluttershy were cleaning up dinner, you noticed Zecora had fallen asleep on the floor. Being the gentleman you were, you picked her up and carried her to her bed. Once you tucked her in, you headed back to the kitchen.

As you reached her doorway, you heard faint mumbling coming from her. Curious, you walked to her bedside. From what you could see from her facial expression she was having a bad dream.

“Zecora?”
As you attempt to reach out to her, she began to thrash about wildly. You then gave a gentle shake.
“Zecora! Wake up!”
As she heard your voice, her eyes snapped open, and she sat up. When she felt your hand on her shoulder, she quickly looks toward you.
“Are you okay?” you asked concerned.
“I do think so...thank you Nito,” she spoke, a little shaken.
“What happened? You looked like you had a bad dream.”
“That is one way of putting it,” she said as she looked away. “It was not exactly pleasant.”
“Do you wanna talk about it?”
She shook her head.
“I’d prefer not to...but I do thank you Nito.”
While her breathing had steadied, you could see her tightly grip her covers. You then gave her a warm smile.
“Okay, but if you ever need to talk...I’m here for you.”
Though she responded with a nod, you saw her visibly shake.
“Are you cold?” you asked.
“Cold I am not...just still distraught.”
“Oh…I see…”

Your body then moved on its own and wrapped her in a warm embrace. This simple act seemed to have calmed her down. With a sigh, she leaned deeper into your hug.

“Feel better?”
She nodded as her nerves appeared to have settled.
“Good. If you’d like I can stay ‘til you fall asleep,” you offered.
This got a smile from the mare.
“If you intend to help me rest, then I’d like to make a request,” she said.
“Anything...just ask.”

She was silent for a moment as if she wasn’t expecting you to agree. In one swift motion, she moved to where her back was to you. She then pulled you down with her so she is on her side and you’re spooning her.

“My request to lay like this. If you will permit…”
“Zecora...” you said with a blush. “Are you comfortable?”
“Yes...this gives me relief. Like this, I feel safe...”
“Good. Now try and get some rest.”

She shifted her body to snuggle closer to you. After a few moments, you heard her slowly start to fall asleep. You began to gently stroke her mane, to which a content smile appeared on her face. Within minutes she had fallen asleep. Carefully as you could, you wormed your way out of the bed.

“Good night Zecora,” you whispered.

As you were about to leave, you heard her mumble something. Curious you walked back to her and leaned closer to hear.

“I wasn’t strong enough...can never forgive myself...”
Not strong enough? What does she-?
You saw tears run down her face, as she lets out a brief sniffle.
“Why was I the one saved...instead of you, dear Blade...”
Blade? I wonder who that is?

You reached down to wipe the tears from her eyes and gently stroked her mane. This calmed her down, and she turned over. As you left the room, you saw Fluttershy was standing by the doorway.

“How long were you there?” you asked, with a blush.
“Not long… that was nice what you for her,” she replied.
You gave a sheepish grin.
“Yeah… Hey, do you know a pony named Blade?”
“Hmm…I can’t say I do. Why do you ask?”
“Well…nevermind it’s nothing. Let’s go.”
“Oh, umm okay then.”

You both leave, after making sure that her home was secured, and head back to Ponyville. Once there, you said your goodbyes and part ways for your homes. As you walked home, your mind raced as to who this Blade pony was. It was apparent that it was a pony from her past, but from what it looked like it was somepony that was dear to her.

When you got back to the castle, you headed to the library to do some research. While looking, you found a book about Zebrican History. You sat down and read it. You soon found yourself lost with intrigue.

You couldn't believe how the zebras had a rich history filled with many battles, their diverse culture, and legendary warriors. But one thing caught your attention the most, and that was the mystical shamans. How they were able to perform mystic feats without the use of unicorn magic, the variety of ways to make potions, the way they have an alluring mystery to them really reeled you in. While engrossed in your book, you felt a hoof tap your shoulder.

“Whatcha reading, Nito?” asked Twilight.
“Zebrican History…I had no idea how fascinating their culture was. Especially these ones that earn the title ‘shaman’. It seems to be a well-respected position.”
“I do believe it is considered a high honor to be called a shaman. What’s got you so interested in their culture all of a sudden,” she asked, before giving him a playful nudge. “Could it be because of a certain zebra?”
“Well, yes…kinda… you know me, Twi. I love learning about new cultures.”
Twilight tapped her chin.
“True, you did pick up on Equestrian culture pretty quick,” she noted.
“I wonder if I’d be able to become one. A legendary shaman…”
“I don’t know about that, Nito,” spoke Twilight. “It’s not something that can be done overnight.”
“When there’s a will, there’s a way!” you passionately stated.
To which Twilight shook her head.
“Classic Nito. By the way, I’ve made some headway on our potion experiment.”
“Really? What did you find out?”
“Well, upon further research it seems the potion was meant to be taken in sips, not drunk all at once,” she explained.
You facepalmed at the revelation.
“That would’ve been nice to know.”
“But now we can successfully measure the effects, without you collapsing from exhaustion.”
“Awesome!”
“I’d like to test it out tonight...if you wouldn't mind?” she asked.
“Not at all Twilight. Just give me a few more minutes, and I’ll meet you in the lab.”
“Perfect, I'll see you there.”

She teleported away to leave you to your studies. Once gone you turned your attention back to your book. You then came across a familiar face. It was zebra mare that was known throughout Zebrican history as the youngest shaman ever.

“No way...Zecora?”

For the next few days, your life became pretty routine. Throughout the day, you and Fluttershy would tend to Zecora. And at night, you and Twilight were up perfecting the Boost Elixir (you came up with that name yourself). The more you took it, the longer the effects would last. After a few tests, you two were finally able to work out all the pros and cons. However, throughout the past week, you were patiently waiting for Zecora to recover so you could ask her something.

At long last, your wait was over, as Zecora had finally made a full recovery.

“So how do you feel, Zecora?” asked Fluttershy.
“Rested and jubilant. My affliction was sent,” Zecora cheered.
“That’s great to hear,” spoke Fluttershy.
You decided it was now or never.
“Um, Zecora. There’s something I wanna ask you…” you said.
“And what might that be? This thing you want from me?”
“Umm...well…”
You bowed to her on all fours your head to the floor.
“Will you do me the honor of training me to be a shaman?” you humbly asked.

The room fell silent as both mares were left in a state of shock. As you looked up, you saw Zecora gazed upon you with a stoic face. She peered into your eyes to see the validity of your request.

“That is not a choice to be made so lightly, you would have to adhere to me completely,” she firmly spoke.
“I know. It’s just...I’ve read up about your culture, and it intrigued me. So, I wanna learn the ways of the shaman,” he said.
After a brief moment, Zecora then gave you a confident smile.
“My dear friend Nito I accept. I'll make a Shaman of you yet,” she spoke.
You stood up and wrapped her in a tight embrace.
“Really? Awesome! I swear I will not let you down,” you smiled.
