The Life of Sunshine Daisy
"Ready Daisy?" Trevor got into position
"Ready." I tilted my head down and magic started to flow though my horn as the spell started to work, causing Trevor to be able to seem like he is floating in midair, and performing magic tricks all his own. After we went though all the tricks, I stopped my flow of magic and sat down, a little exhausted afterwards. Trevor grab a water bottle and handed to me.
"Nice job today, but the flower spell needs a little work before we can perform." he stated. I nodded to his statement. "But don't push yourself too far. I don't want you to hurt anything."
I waved a hoof at him "Nah, I'll be fine. none of those things can hurt me anyway; they aren't that hard to cast. Anyway, hows school going for you. You didn't talk about it all day yesterday."
"I....really don't want to talk about it."
"Come on Trev, you can tell me anything. Come on, let's walk and talk."
Trevor agreed and we went out of his house and started walking around town, going nowhere in particular. He pulled out his phone, pretending he got a call, and started talking to me. We found out that this is the best way that we can talk to each other without any of the humans thinking that Trevor is crazy.
"So Trev," I said, "what happened today that got you so upset."
Trevor sighed. "Well, two things. One, people still call me a gay brony, and two, Sky is being a jackass to me again." What is with that stallion always picking on Trevor? "He kept picking on me until I snapped, and low and behold, I'm shouting at nothing. The whole school started to laugh at me and I got sent to the school counselor, yet again." His anger was really starting to show. The one day I don't come with him to his school and Sky makes Trevor look idiotic. Ugh.
"Don't worry about Sky Blue. He's just jealous of you being able to see us." That's how it's been ever since he was born. No other human could see us; we just pass through them like ghosts.
"That doesn't matter. I'm just sick of that pegasus being a god damn asshole." Trevor sighed. "I'm heading back home. I need to calm down."
I don't object. We turned around and started to head back to his house. His parents still weren't home (they wouldn't be until around supper time), so Trevor didn't have to explain where he went. We walked up the steps and went over to his room. He stopped at his bed and fell right onto the bed and let out an agitated sigh. I hopped onto the bed and sat next to him, starting to rub his back with my hooves. He always loved when I did this to help him relax; I did it ever since he was a kid. While doing this, I started to remember how my mom used to do this with me when I was a filly, and that same day being the happiest and saddest day of my life.

My earliest memory goes as far back as when I was just 4 years old. My mom had me laying on my stomach and was rubbing my back to comfort me. I always enjoyed these moments when she paid attention to me and not so much on my sister, White Rose. While she was rubbing my back, she told me so many different stories of things that she has done, sights she has seen, and a little about her job. I remember, being the curious filly I was, asking her to tell me more about her job being a guardian.
"Well, Sunshine," she stated, using my first name, "There is a lot to being a guardian that I can't tell you right now since you are to young, but there are some things I can. Mainly what a guardian does is that they protect the person that they choose to protect."
"But how do they choose who they protect?" I asked.
"Well, it just depends on the pony. They look at all the humans and decide which one is worthy of protection. Sometimes it takes a day to decide, other times it could take months, or even years. However, they will eventually find that one person who is worthy of protection."
I was in amazement at this. I my mind, what my mom said was the coolest job in the whole world. I told her excitedly that I wanted to be a guardian when I grew up. She laughed at how childish I was acting and told me that I could do what ever I wanted to, and that I shouldn't jump to conclusions so early. I said ok, and she stopped rubbing my back and let me go. I ran around the house that was owned my Laura, the woman who my mom is protecting, and found my sister out in the garden. She was about 7 at that time, and already got her cutie mark, which was a single rose. She looked nice that day, putting one of the flowers into her gray mane, which complemented her style pretty nicely. It was hard for me to find anything to match; nothing goes great with yellow and orange.
I ran up to her and told her all the amazing things that mom just told me, and she laughed.
"You really want to be a guardian?" asked Rose in a mean tone. I nodded my head, and she scoffed. "That job isn't worth it. Doing all that work for these humans and getting no reward out of it? It sounds too much like being a slave." I didn't know at the time what slave meant, and I was horrified when I did. "I'd rather stick with my flowers, since I get a reward out of that by seeing the beautiful flowers spring up."
I still questioned what she knew and asked if the humans ever thank the ponies. Rose laughed even harder then. "Daisy, have you ever come in contact with any of the humans here?"
"No," I said quietly, "Mom said that I shouldn't bother them"
"Well, news flash, you can't bother them. Ever. They can't see you, me, mom, or any of the other ponies here. Being a guardian, in my mind, is the worst job you can ever have. I would think of doing something else."
Rose then walked past me into the house and went upstairs. I just stood where I was, extremely dumbfounded. I couldn't believe Rose, she couldn't be right. I decided to try to prove her wrong by trying to talk to a human inside the house. I found Laura at her work desk and tried to get her attention. She didn't respond. I shouted louder, and she still acted like I wasn't there. I got up on my hind legs and tried to touch her, but then my hoof just passed right through her. I tried again and again and the same thing happened every time. I was heartbroken. Not only was Rose right, but now I was doubting what mom does and if it's the right thing to do. I started to cry and went up to mom and told her about everything. I got scolded for trying to get Laura to notice me and Rose got scolded for scaring me. Mom comforted me and telling me that her job was hard, but it was worth it to see them grow up and to be able to live a full life, even though the ponies never get noticed. It helped me a lot, but I was still doubtful about doing that job until that one day happened

I was broken from my train of thoughts when Trevor and I heard a car pull up in front of the house. The car then blared it's horn. It was Trevor's parents coming home from work, and they need Trevor to come out to go to dinner. Trevor sighed, a little upset that I had to stop rubbing his back, and I got off his back so he could get up. He offered for me to go with him, but I said I would find somewhere else to eat. He grabbed his coat and went down to meet his parents. I thought over all that I could have for dinner, and a excellent idea came to mind. I reported out of the house to the front yard, watched Trevor and his parents leave, and started off towards the old construction site in town.
