The Nightclub
The black of night rested upon the sky, its only occupants being the stars and moon. The bright winter moon cast a brilliant glow into every street of Canterlot, illuminating the paths for any late night travelers. A strong breeze navigated through the streets, blowing leaves of multiple colors in every possible direction. Wind chimes rung at every corner store. Of all the tall city buildings and houses, few contained the lights of rousing ponies. Very few souls traversed the cold night air.
Of those souls was a gray, earth pony mare, and of all the possible seasons of the world, she despised fall the most. Not because of the ironic beauty of the trees, or the upcoming holidays, but the thought that in a mere few months, the trees would be bare, and the city would be frozen in a bone chilling blanket of snow.
For now, though, the gray mare known as Octavia would trudge through the streets. The wind blew relentlessly at her body, whipping the small, purple, wool scarf she wore around her neck. Typically, she would wear her trademark purple bowtie and white collar. Due to the cooler weather, however, she chose to dress slightly warmer. Not necessarily in her winter wear, but just enough to take the edge off the wind.
Octavia thought of the countless hours, days, and even years of practice it had taken her to get to this point. It had all started when she was just seven years old…
“Octavia, would you come in here for a second? I have a little gift for you.”
The curious young filly walked into the living room to see what her mother had for her.
Looking around she didn’t see anything at first, then she noticed her mother’s horn was glowing and she could tell she was hiding something behind her.
“Ohhhh, I wanna see, I wanna see!” Octavia said in excitement as she tried to peek behind her mother’s back only to be blocked by her strong hooves.
“Now Octavia, what have I told you before about getting something you want?” Her mother said with a stern look in her eye.
“Act real nice and beg really good?” She joked as she tried to look as cute as possible.
“Very funny, little filly. Now really I want to hear the right answer this time.” Her mother said as she put a foreleg over her face to keep from laughing at how funny her daughter looked in her little puppy dog eyes.
“Mother, may I please see my gift?” She said as she gave a big toothy smile.
“That’s better young lady. After all, I did not raise you to speak without good grammar, because..?” Her mother said, pausing and hoping her daughter would pick up on the point.
“Poor grammar is a sign of bad education, and also saying things like gimmie is not an acceptable way to talk in public.” Octavia rolled her eyes when her mother wasn’t looking.
“Good girl, I think now that you are speaking with a proper tone of voice, you have earned your gift.” She floated the small violin towards her. “Well, what do you think, honey?”
“Well, I like it, but… I…” Octavia replied hesitantly
“What’s wrong? I thought you wanted to learn how to play music?” She said, while looking down at her daughter’s sad eyes.
“Well, it’s just that. I am not a unicorn, and everypony keeps telling me that no earth pony will be able to perform music a-a-and I’ll never be good enough to do it." Octavia cried, bursting into tears.
“Now honey, I want you to listen,” She raised her head up so she could look right in her eyes, “never, ever,allow any pony to tell you what you can or cannot do.” She flashed her daughter a smile, and continued to speak to try to cheer her up. “You're my daughter, and I’ll always believe in you, an-”
“You mean you are not ashamed I wasn’t born a unicorn like you or father?” Octavia interrupted, as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Ashamed of you? Never! We have always thought of you as our pride and joy. I wouldn’t trade you in for a hundred unicorns. If you remember nothing else from us in all your life, remember this, don’t ever stop believing or reaching for the dreams you want.” She brought her daughter into a warm embrace and began Octavia's first lesson on music.
Octavia remembered the experience fondly. It had been the moment that had set her on the path of music, and brought her to where she walked now. There had been challenges along the journey, as there are with any profession. She was never really bothered by the naysayers of her youth. At least, as long as her mother was there to guide her.
One of the most struggling moments in her career, was when her mother died. The pony that had been by her side for years, had suddenly vanished. The pony that had held Octavia up through all of the berating and ridicule, was gone.
It was notably one of the hardest times in her life. The only thing that kept her going, was the day she had been selected to audition for The Royal Canterlot Orchestra. It had come unexpectedly. She later found out that one of the orchestra members had been to one of the private concerts Octavia had been hired for.
Through her acceptance into The Royal Canterlot Orchestra, her fame blossomed. She became renown as one of the youngest, and most talented members of the group, quickly climbing to become one of the few stars of the orchestra.
The orchestra essentially became her family. She made friends of all the members almost instantly. It was as if her life had been complete. There were days when there would be bumps in the road, but almost anything could be resolved with her friends.
Performances were exhilarating. The crowds were gigantic, often times tickets sold out only days after their concert at the location was announced, and with popularity came fans.
The orchestra had its loyal followers as did any musical group. Octavia, however, was a special case. She had accumulated her own followers over the earlier years she had been a member of the orchestra. It didn't take long for her to realize it either, as fan mail and autograph requests became a normal part of her daily routine.
Her fans stayed with her for years, always showing their support. It quickly became one of the best times of her life. However, as her life changed, so did the popularity of other music genres. Music in general was gaining popularity as entertainment across the nation. There was no better time to become a musician.
It first struck Octavia with surprise when one of the orchestra's shows was unable to sell out a concert hall in Manehattan. It shocked most everypony in the orchestra, as they had always sold every ticket for decades.
It affected everypony, dropping morale. Within a year, the orchestra barely filled half a concert hall. The orchestra began to lose money, and started making pay cuts to stay afloat.
The lack of attendees had most of the orchestra confused. During their last concert, there was a poll amongst the audience. To the orchestra's dismay, the reason for the waning attendance seemed to be that the orchestra needed to "get with the times" as one of the survey cards read.
That card now occupied Octavia's thoughts, as her hooves clipped along a stone path, following her two friends. Both being members of the orchestra, they were quick to become friends with Octavia.
Midnight Dancer was one of those two friends. She was the orchestra's one and only harpist. She was a midnight blue earth pony mare, whose mane and tail were black, and always seemed to be perfectly straightened. Her cutie mark was an octave of piano keys. The only outstanding feature, was the scarlet red bow that she always had in her mane. It matched her deep red eyes perfectly. She was also slightly smaller than Octavia, despite being the same age.
The other, was Golden Chord. A bright yellow unicorn stallion, with a chocolate brown mane and tail, was the orchestra's third chair violinist. His cutie mark was a set of five violin strings wrapping themselves like snakes around a violin bow.
They had been her very first friends in the orchestra. Sticking by her side through thick and thin. However, they were now becoming quite the pain in the flank. They had come to the ridiculous conclusion that Octavia needed "cheering up."
Octavia reluctantly walked along in her friends' plan. She tried multiple times to find out about their destination, only to be confused further by their answers of "You'll love it," and "It's not too much further."
"Remind me why you two insist on dragging me out here in the middle of the night?" Octavia sighed, wincing from the sudden gust of wind in her face.
"We already told you, dear. I do hate repeating myself." Midnight scolded over her shoulder.
"For the hundredth time, Midnight. Please stop calling me 'dear.' We're the same age." Midnight released a small chuckle, as she continued to trot alongside Golden. Octavia rolled her eyes, a bad habit that must have formed sometime when she was young. The wind once again made its presence known, forcing another swath if cold air around Octavia. Desperate to keep herself warm, Octavia pulled the scarf up over her muzzle.
The street they walked on seemed to stretch out endlessly. Ebbing every which way like a slithering cobblestone snake, winding its way through the upper district, it roamed past businesses and homes, not choosing a particular destination.
As Octavia continued to fight off the ever freezing wind, she failed to notice that her friends had stopped. She would have passed them, if not for Golden grabbing her attention.
"Ahem, Equestria to Octavia? Is anyone home?" He asked, suppressing a laugh.
"Hm? Oh! Sorry about that. I suppose I was a tad bit preoccupied with the cold."
"Clearly." Midnight joked.
"So...where exactly are we?" She asked them hesitantly.
"Only the best nightclub in all of Canterlot." Golden bragged, clearly eager to head inside.
Octavia scanned the building in front of her, trying to form any kind of impression in her head. The structure had no distinguishing features, other than a bright blue neon sign that read "The Blue Star." The rest of it looked like a plain brick building, containing no windows, single set of double doors acting as the only visible entrance.
Octavia felt butterflies grow in her stomach. She was never comfortable in new places, and she couldn't gather any information from the outside, which only served to worsen her assumptions of the establishment.
Her nervousness must have shown on her face, because Golden was quickly by her side with a hoof on her shoulder. "It's fine, Octavia. We come here after nearly every performance in Canterlot. It's a great way to use up that extra energy after concerts, and simply unwind."
Octavia sighed, hoping that the cruel joke would be over swiftly. To her dismay, Midnight opened one of the doors for her. Octavia found herself looking down a bleak stairway. The stairs were dimly lit by two rows of neon blue lights that flanked the stairs.
As she reached the bottom landing, she was faced by another door. However, this one was much different. It was wooden, to start, and was painted white, with a large blue star painted in the center. Hearing some music from the other side, Octavia chose to press onward.
The door swung open with a light push. Octavia gasped as she saw the inside of The Blue Star. She expected to see a run-down, dilapidated bar, with a crumbling wooden stage. To her complete surprise, it was the exact opposite.
The room was a large rectangle. The bar was off to the right of the door, and was made of white tinted glass, with blue lights illuminating the area under the bar stools. A large mirror sat behind the bar, against the wall. Glass shelves held hundreds upon hundreds of various types of alcoholic stress relief.
The floor was made of some kind of polished black stone, cut into the shape of tiles. The walls were painted a glossy shade of white. Black metal tables were scattered about the half of the room with the bar, red velveted wooden chairs surrounding them.
The other half of the room housed the dance floor and the stage. The stage itself sat directly opposite the entrance. The stage wasn't actually an open stage. It was instead blocked off by the same white glass the covered the bar. Lights were set up all over the stage and ceiling, cascading lights of various colors all across the dance floor.
The only problem was that, the entire club was filled to the brim with ponies. The dance floor was nothing more than a series of bobbing and swaying bodies and heads. The bar was surrounded by ponies buying drinks, and every table and booth that she could see was occupied with partying ponies.
It took only a second for Octavia to notice something that made her blood boil, and bones shiver. Electronic music. If there was one thing that could take this club from impressive to repulsive in less than a second, it was electronic dance music.
Octavia ground her teeth. How could anypony listen to such vile, and unorganized sounds. Every note was like a punch to her very soul. Every beat made her wince. Even the floor shook from the intensity of the sound.
"It's not even real music. You can't save, and play back real music. You can't augment real music as it plays from the instrument. It shouldn't even be a recognized genre of music." Octavia whispered to herself. She stood rigid as the club moved around her.
Both Golden, and Midnight walked past her, making their way toward the dance floor.
"Wait!" Octavia yelled. Loud enough so that they could hear. "What am I supposed to do?"
Midnight quickly turned around and went back to Octavia. "Octavia, you are too uptight. You are supposed to have fun!" Midnight said, before laughing, and disappearing into the crowd, heading after Golden.
Octavia sighed, and scanned the nightclub for any vacant seats. To her unfortunate luck, she found an empty stool at the bar.
She slowly made her way through the tables, and sat herself down. Octavia rested her head in her hooves, staring at the bar top. Her mind had swiftly become flooded with the thoughts of the comment cards once more.
It didn't make any sense, the orchestra was the most renowned in all of Equestria. Sure there were other orchestras. The Manehattan and Van Hoover orchestra's, for example. They might be facing the same issue. Octavia sighed. This is the career she chose. It was what she loved to do, and the music was the best part. It was extremely demotivating to know that not everypony else thought so.
"Ahem."
Octavia lurched back to reality. A different song was playing, but it was just as horrid as the last. She looked up to see a brown unicorn stallion staring at her from behind the counter. He had silver hair, and deep hazel-colored eyes.
"I'm sorry. Do you need something?" Octavia asked, hoping not to have offended him.
"No...not particularly. I was just asking you the same question. Do you need anything?"
"If I'm going to do anything here, I might as well enjoy my time." Octavia sighed as she looked out over the club.
"Would you like a drink?" The bartender asked, leaning on the counter.
"I suppose a drink wouldn't hurt. What do you have?" Octavia looked behind the bartender, looking through the menagerie of bottles.
The bartender let out a small laugh. "Is this the first time you've been here? It's not a question of what I have. It's a question of what you want."
Octavia was quickly taken back by the brash claims of the bartender. She thought about testing him; asking him for the most complicated drinks she knew. Then again, with the way her day was going so far, it probably would just end up with her wasting bits on expensive drinks. Choosing not to chase the bartender's boasting, she chose to order what she always did.
"I'll just have a glass of scotch."
"Scotch? You drink scotch? I didn't think a mare as young as you would drink something like scotch, but hey, who am I to judge."
With that, the bartender walked away, and reached below the counter, pulling out a small crystalline glass, and placing on the counter. After a quick inspection, the bartender brought the glass back over in front of Octavia, and left it sit, as he used his magic to grab a brown bottle off of the top shelf.
Curious as to why he inspected the glass, Octavia leaned up over the counter to look at the glass herself. It seemed fine by her standards.
The bartender must have seen her, because he came back with a slight smirk across his face. "Our dishwasher has been acting up lately. It's been leaving stains on some of the glasses. I don't really like giving somepony a glass thats not perfectly clean."
"Oh, well thats rather unfortunate. Will you be having it fixed anytime soon?" Octavia asked, as she watched the bartender pour the slightly yellowing liquid into the glass.
"Yea, it's just that the repair pony apparently only works on weekends. Seems like a bad business plan to only work on weekends, but that's their problem." The bartender closed the bottle, and placed it back on the shelf.
Octavia pulled the glass toward her. She looked into it, watching as the scotch wobbled slightly as she moved the glass. It just didn't make sense. How could anypony think that electronic music was better than classical? Classical music has body. It tells a story that can lead anywhere. Classical music has beautiful melodies, staccatos and legatos, crescendos and diminuendos. What did electronic music have that classical did not?
"Are you alright?"
Octavia was once again ripped from her thoughts. "Hmm?"
"I asked if you were alright. You seem really distracted."
"Yes I'm fine." Octavia answered, not even considering making eye contact with the bartender. She had been taught during her fillyhood to always make eye contact with those you speak to.
"Are you sure?" At this, Octavia did look up to properly address the bartender. To Octavia's surprise, he looked like he was genuinely concerned.
She smiled slightly. "Yes, I promise you that I am perfectly fine."
"Hmm...okay." The bartender said, as he walked away.
Octavia sat there for a second, thinking about the bartender. He seemed like a sensible pony. Maybe he could answer her questions. "Actually no. I'm not alright."
"What?" The bartender asked turning around.
"I said that I am not alright." Octavia responded, frowning.
"Well what's wrong?" He asked, once again leaning on the counter.
"Can I ask you a few questions?" Octavia asked, picking up her glass.
"Well...sure, anything."
Octavia took a moment to calm herself. There was no point in holding a conversation while you're emotionally unstable. She tipped the glass back, swallowing the whole glass in one swig. She placed the empty glass back on the counter, taking a few large breaths.
"Okay, what do you think of orchestral music?"
"Well, I think it's fine. There’s nothing wrong with it." He answered, refilling Octavia's glass.
"I-I didn't ask you for another drink."
"I know, but you need it. This one's on the house."
"Well, thank you."
"Your welcome. Please, continue."
"Okay. What do you think of electronic music, then?"
"It's fine. I don't think there's anything wrong with it."
"Alright. I'm a cellist in the Royal Canterlot Orchestra, and lately we've been waning in our attendance at concerts. We had a poll, and the majority of the responses stated that we need to 'Get with the times.' Do they mean electronic music?"
"Well, I suppose it is possible. It could mean anything honestly. I think any genre of music is good. There is a good chance that that is what they meant."
"But what does electronic music have that classical does not?"
"I have no idea, they both have bass, melodies, and harmonies."
"So then why is electronic more popular?"
The bartender thought about this for a moment. "Well, if you ask me, and you did, I would tell you that ponies’ tastes change. Music popularity shifts a lot. Just because a pony likes classical one week, doesn't mean they won't like electronic the next. Does that help?"
Octavia took another single swig of her drink, once again placing the empty glass on the counter. "No, not really, but I guess it makes sense."
The bartender once again filled Octavia's glass. Before he could put it back though, Octavia stopped him. "Just leave the bottle here. You have other ponies to tend to."
The bartender gave Octavia a concerned look. "Okay, just go easy on the juice."
An empty bottle and ten glasses of scotch later, Octavia was horribly intoxicated. Her head was laying on the countertop, face down, with one hoof under her face, the other around the emptied glass.
The club had thinned out considerably. Octavia had no idea how much time may have passed, or even if her friends had gone home. She let out a groan, and looked up to scan the club.
A new DJ had taken the stage. She was a white unicorn mare with an electric blue mane and tail. The music was still just as horrendous, but it at least had rhythm to it. Octavia scowled, this music was repulsive. So much, that it made her stomach turn.
She placed her head back on the countertop, this time keeping her chin on the counter, but letting her forehooves hang at her sides. She sighed. If coming here was supposed to make her feel better, than the club was proving to be counterintuitive.
Octavia watched as the bartender made his way back over to her for the first time in who knows how long.
"I think you should probably head home."
"Why, izza bar closing?"
"No, not anytime soon. You just seem to have gone a bit overboard."
Octavia listened as the bass of the music began to make the counter vibrate. It enraged her slightly. "Ima perffffectly fine. Mkay?"
"No, not 'okay.' You're drunk."
"Psh, I knowhat I'm doin'."
The bartender became visibly annoyed. Saying nothing, he simply removed the bottle and glass.
"Hey, whatareyadoin?"
"I'd cut you off, but it seems that you already did yourself." He answered holding the scotch bottle up and shaking it back and forth.
Octavia tried to focus on the bottle, but found her vision way too blurred to see it. She sighed, lying her head on the counter, and looked up at the stage.
The white mare had put on a pair of purple sunglasses. She looked like she was enjoying herself. At least somepony here was. Octavia looked at the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her scarf was untied and hung loosely around her neck. Something caught her eye in the mirror. Somewhere behind her were two ponies kissing in a booth.
No matter how hard she tried to ignore it, she just couldn't take her mind off of it. Something about them seemed all too familiar. The stallion was a golden unicorn. The mare sitting next to him was almost too dark to see, but she was relatively small. Slightly smaller than Octavia.
Octavia gasped. It was Golden and Midnight. They were making out in a booth. Octavia was unable to form any words.
"Mr.Bartender! I-I-I need'ou for a moment."
Within a few seconds the bartender was standing in front of Octavia, so much so, that he was blocking the view of her two friends sucking face.
"You can call me Tender. It is my name."
"Are those two ponieskissing?" Octavia asked, pointing to the mirror behind Tender.
"Ummm. No. I really think you should go home. This music must really be getting to your head."
Octavia turned around in her chair. It was Golden and Midnight, but they were clearly not kissing, or doing anything of the sort.
"I guess you right." Octavia stated, defeated for the night. She was extremely tired, and did like the prospect of a nice warm bed to collapse in.
She stepped down onto the floor, and began half walking, half stumbling toward the exit. A new song was starting, and the club was decently quiet.
She was about to open the door, when she heard an unmistakable sound. The deep song of a cello. It flowed into her ears, and soothed her ear drums, but where was it coming from?
Octavia looked all over the club. From what she could tell, there was nopony playing a cello inside the club. It sounded beautiful. Octavia chose to wait for the cellist to reveal themselves.
It was truly beautiful music. It sounded similar to something Octavia played once. If she was right, it was a piece that she originally composed, and played at a concert a few months ago.
Wait.
Someone was playing her music! Octavia felt slightly confused. Who was playing her music? Then she realized, it was coming from the speakers on the stage. That white mare was playing Octavia's music. It wasn't bad. Octavia was even slightly flattered that somepony enjoyed her music enough to play it in a nightclub.
Then, the electronic music was added. It was horrible. It destroyed the beauty of the cello. It was almost impossible to hear. Octavia was mad. What kind of incompetent fool would do that to the piece she wrote. It was insane. It was unacceptable. She had to stop this musical treason at once.
Octavia marched, as well as a drunk pony could, through the nightclub toward the stage. The dancefloor had become somewhat crowded, even though the club was for the most part, empty. She locked her eyes on the mare on the stage, glaring.
As she reached the stairway, she could tell that the DJ had noticed her, because the mare looked nervous. Octavia scowled.
She approach the mare on stage."Just what'do you thinkr doin?"
"What are you talking about?" The white mare replied.
"First off, you usen my moosic, 'n then you gots the nerves to put your garbage music over it?"
"Shit! You're Octavia! How did I not recognize you. Look, I can explain, just not here, or now. Wait for me out front."
Octavia, being drunk, thought nothing wrong with this. "Okay okay okay. Jus' hurry'up mkay?"
The white mare nodded, so Octavia promptly made her way outside. Being exhausted from the very long, and very eventful day, she quickly found a bench to sit at, as she waited outside for the DJ.
She would have to stay awake, though. To ensure that the DJ didn't get a chance to slip away. She watched the door tentatively, as the cold night wind whipped her scarf and mane to the side.
Octavia was woken by a hoof poking her side. She promptly snorted and opened her eyes. She licked her wind-dried lips, as she looked around for the slumber interrupter.
Her weary eyes quickly found the white DJ, smiling at her. Why would she be smiling at her? Then she saw her eyes. Her deep red, gorgeous eyes. Wait...gorgeous?
"Oh my gosh, I thought you were dead, and I got worried. I'm so happy you're not dead, but we need to get out of this cold air."
Octavia looked at the mare, with a very confused expression. Did she really just say that all in one breath?
The mare's smile quickly became a nervous one. Octavia found herself unable to look away from her beautiful eyes.
The mare let out a nervous chuckle, and looked at the ground, before pawing at it, trying to think of something to say.
"Oh. I'm Vinyl Scratch." She said as she held out a hoof toward Octavia.
Octavia wasn’t sure what to do, so she accepted the hoofshake. “My name’s O-”
“Octavia, yes I know. Look why don’t you follow me, and I’ll explain everything when we get there.”
“Okay. Where are we going?” Octavia asked as she stood and began to follow Vinyl up the road.
“My studio, of course.”
Vinyl put the key into her apartment door. She lived in the Business District of Canterlot, in an apartment underneath a friend’s store. “Come on in.” She said, as the door swung open into a dark room.
Octavia followed her in. The light was switched on, and Octavia got a good look at the apartment. It had a cream-colored carpeted floor, a small corner kitchen tucked away behind a tiny island. Another room, which she assumed was Vinyl’s bedroom, and a small walk-in closet, on the far end of the room. In the room they were currently in, which she assumed was the living room, sat a small electric piano, wired up to various computers that she couldn’t even identify. A small television, and a couch.
It wasn’t impressive by any standard, but she wasn’t here to look at home furnishings. She was here for an explanation. “So...I forget why I’m here.”
“Me using your music, and overlaying my ‘garbage music’ over it.” Vinyl said as she sat down in a rolling chair in front of the computer looking things.
“Look I like your music. I’m actually a fan of yours.” Vinyl said, as she pulled out one of Octavia’s CDs and put it in one of the computers.
“Classical music is so calming, and it works well with…”
Octavia zoned out. She couldn’t stop looking at Vinyl. She was so pretty. No, beautiful. She might even go so far as to call her ‘hot.’ Her eyes were so distracting. Like, she could see her whole-
The smooth song of a Cello played from the speakers on the computer.
“Do you see what I mean?” Vinyl asked. “It’s like, as soon as you hear it, the tension in your body just melts.”
She was right. Octavia suddenly felt so much more relaxed. “Yes, I know.”
Vinyl sighed. “I know you know. Haha. This is your music after all. I just love it so much, I wanted to use it in my own music so bad, but I was never able to contact you, so I just used it anyways. It was wrong I know, and I feel like crap for doing it. I understand if you want to sue me or…”
Octavia once again zoned out. Vinyl had closed her eyes as she was talking, and she was shaking her head. It was so cute. Octavia was running out of thoughts to use, just to describe how absolutely adorable Vinyl was when she was flustered, and upset. Octavia felt her heart flutter. Whether it was the alcohol talking in her brain or not, she couldn’t tell.
Vinyl noticed Octavia giving her a sultry stare through glazed-over eyes. "Are you okay?" She asked, watching Octavia's body sway.
"Mhmmm" She responded. Octavia wasn't aware, but she began to smile.
"Well, could you stop looking at me like that? It's making me feel weird."
Octavia didn't drop the stare, instead she moved so close to Vinyl that she was practically breathing on her face. "You're hot." She whispered.
Vinyl's words were caught in her throat. This was not at all what she was trying to do. Before she could come up with anything to say, she noticed Octavia swaying even more in front of her.
Octavia collapsed onto the floor. Passed out from either alcohol, exhaustion, or possibly even a combination of both.
