Before celestia and luna were found but after their birth the village of earth ponies was a bleak hard working village. Ponies had to have a cutie mark at five and it had to be something useful that was on the list. Only rich ponies could afford school and school went on until four. All the time you would see huge groups of fillies in fields trying to get their cutie mark. If you didn't get your cutie mark at five or faked or if it wasn't on the list it was punishable by death. Also earth ponies didn't trust unicorns and if an earth pony was a witch or wizard the others wouldn't take chances and the wizards and witches would be punished by death. Death was a repetitive thing in this village and five year old pudding head didn't like it. She sat in the field her goopy hair hung at her sides as she tried to weave wheat together. There was a joyful cry and every pony whipped around to see a little wheat colored filly with black hair jumping up and down. On her flank was a piece of wheat cutie mark. It was on the list she wouldn't die. Pudding head smiled weakly and continued to try and weave. Finally she gave up and trotted home.

Her mother greeted her with a large smile her green eyes sparkling. She always looked pretty with her big bright eyes and long flowing yellow hair. Her wheat body was always nicely brushed and when wind blew it would rustle like wheat in a field. "Did you get it!" She squealed. Pudding head shook her head. Her mother seemed to deflate instantly. "Oh," she said trotting inside. There pudding top's father glared at her. He was a blacksmith and always covered in soot so she didn't know what color his mane and coat was. Plus he always had hated her. He mother trotted to her room each painful hoof step hit pudding head like a sword. Her mother had a cooking cutie mark and always cooked pudding for pudding head when pudding head was sad. Now it was her turn. "What are you doing," her father growled as she pulled down pots and pans. "Pudding," pudding head replied as she pulled out ingredients. She began working until finally she finished calling her mother out. Her mother appeared and sat down to eat the food grimly. When she finished she smiled at pudding head. "You really know how to cheer a mare up!" She smiled. Pudding head smiled back and her mother gasped. Pudding head looked at her flank and gasped too as she saw a spoon full of pudding with a heart inside the pudding. "You got your cutie mark for cooking!" Her mother smiled. "No," pudding head's father grunted," she got her cutie mark for cheering someone up and that's not on the list.

Pudding head'a mother thrashed and tried to pull pull away from pudding head's dad. Pudding head didn't fight as she was pulled away she knew it was punishable by death and that they were sending her to die but that wouldn't happen.
