Episode 2 Part 1: Dragonfly to the Eye

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Autumn in Ponyville. A time of leaves changing, weather getting colder, and the Annual Running of the Leaves was just around the corner, where the ponies of the town ran through the forests to make the leaves fall. One specific evening, Princess Twilight Sparkle and her four best friends were relaxing at her shiny castle. Twilight DID have five best friends, but on this night, one was missing.  "Where is she?" Twilight asked the others as they sat around the throne room, "She should've been back from her date by now." Normally, Twilight would be talking about Pinkie Pie (the only one in the group with a boyfriend), but tonight, she was talking about Fluttershy. She had been out on a date with a pegasus named Tempest all night. Y'see, earlier that day, Tempest came up to her out of the blue, and asked if she wanted to go out to eat somewhere. Fluttershy had nothing else to do, so she happily agreed. She left for her date four hours ago, so it was natural for the five friends to be worried.

"Don't worry darling," Rarity said, "I'm sure that she's on her way right now."

"Ah still don't think she should've gone!" Applejack chimed in. "If this date goes as bad as the last one, Ah reckon she'll never date again!" Applejack did have a reason to be worried. This was Fluttershy's THIRD date in the past two weeks, and unfortunately, each one went badly. It wasn't because Fluttershy was a horrible partner, but just the opposite. She was innocent, and to her dates, that was just the problem. She was too innocent. Fluttershy had never been one to go too fast in a relationship. She believed that to savor a relationship, it should be taken slow. It was an understandable philosophy, but too bad her dates didn't think so. They all tried to go a little too fast with her, and by too fast, I mean getting her into bed after the first date, and left her when they didn't get their way. The girls just didn't want to see their friend get hurt again. But while the others worried, Pinkie tried to keep an open mind.

"Well, Tempest seemed like a nice guy," Pinkie said, "Maybe he'll be a gentle-" Pinkie was interrupted by the sudden slam of a giant crystal door. The others sat up just in time for a sobbing Fluttershy to come storming in and sit on her throne with her face in her hands. She was wearing a lovely green summer dress with lace, her hair was flowing down along her shoulders with flowers in it, and her face, once bright with makeup, had smudged lipstick and mascara run down the cheeks. "Dang," Pinkie mumbled, "I have to stop doing that." The girls quickly went over to Fluttershy and wrapped her in a group hug.

"What happened this time Flutters?" Rainbow asked with an angered frown. "I gotta know so I know how to pound him for doing this!"

"Oh no Rainbow," Fluttershy responded, wiping her tears, "You don't have to do that. But to answer your question, his nice guy attitude covering over another horny stallion happened. The date started out fine. We ate and then went for a walk. W-we stopped near my house and...well...he kissed me on the mouth. I started to panic because I then felt his tongue sliding into my mouth. I didn't want to take it too far, so I broke the kiss and politely asked if we could just take it slow. And then...he..." the tears started to come back up, "he left me!"

"Oh Fluttershy," Twilight said softly, "We're so sorry."

"I just don't understand!" Fluttershy cried, "Why must stallions be such pigs? Why won't anyone just wait like a gentleman? Why was I cursed with...THESE?" She pointed down and everyone already knew what she was talking about. You see, out of all the six, Fluttershy was the most...well endowed. Just last year, she had to upgrade to double D they were so big. And though she did her best to wear the modest clothing she could, she never could fully hide how easily they jiggled. And unfortunately for her, this was the first thing guys saw her for; her twin pistols trying to keep in their holsters.

"Aw c'mon Flutters," said Rainbow, trying to cheer her up. "So you have giant knockers. It doesn't mean you were cursed."

"What would you know about that?" Applejack smirked. "You don't even have knockers. You have...mosquito bites!" Rainbow blushed furiously as everyone but Fluttershy giggled.

"Hey! Smaller boobs means faster speed," snapped Rainbow. "I mean, who would want to lug giant boobs around anyway?" Fluttershy burst into tears again as the others shot a dirty look at Rainbow. "Ah crap," she said. "I'm sorry Flutters. I didn't mean it!"

"I think I need some time alone," Fluttershy whimpered as she got up and left the room. Applejack was about to follow until Twilight held her back, shaking her head. Apparently, Fluttershy needed this. After Fluttershy went back home and changed into something more comfortable, she decided to go for a walk in the Everfree Forest. Normally she wouldn't even think about venturing into there, but tonight, she just didn't care. She was too heartbroken to care. As she walked down the dark path through the maze of trees, she kept talking to herself. "Why must every guy I meet be only a gentleman on the outside? It would be nice to have a boyfriend, but if I can't find someone who won't respect my wishes of taking it show, I don't know if I'll ever find true love. All I'm asking for is a knight in shining armor whose moral is as great as his attitude. Is that too much to ask?" As she rambled on, she wasn't paying attention in front of her and didn't notice the sticky string hanging from the trees. As soon as she hit it, she started flailing her arms and spinning in place, trying to get the substance off of her. "What is this stuff?" she wondered. At first she thought it was string. No, it was too thin to be string. It definitely wasn't rope, and why was it so sticky?

Suddenly, a horrible occurrence came over her. She had just stepped through and ruined a giant spider web! And wherever there was a giant spider web, there probably was a giant spider near by. Fluttershy panicked and started to run the opposite way, until she ran into something furry. She was knocked back and looked up in horror at the multiple-eyed, eight-legged beast starring at her with an angry clicking of its fangs. "Oh," Fluttershy timidly said, "I'm so sorry about your web. I didn't see it." The spider started to move towards her. She tried to get up, but her legs were completely locked. She tried to fly, but her wings were no better, so all she could do was crawl backwards. "Please! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to ruin your web!" The spider continued its advance, angrily clicking its fangs some more. Fluttershy felt so helpless. Normally she was great with animals, but she just never fully understood insects as well. She continued to crawl back until she bumped into a rock. She was trapped! As the spider closed in on her, Fluttershy closed her eyes to prepare for what came next.

"STOP!"

Fluttershy opened her tear-filled eyes as she and the spider looked up to see a figure hovering above them. He had a pale tan coat, his mane and tail were dark brown and short cut, and he was wearing khakis and tall boots. The wings on his back told Fluttershy that he was a pegasus. He quickly flew down and stood between Fluttershy and the spider. "What do you think you're doing?" the pegasus asked the spider. The creature furiously clicked its fangs. "That doesn't mean you can just eat the poor thing!" he responded. Fluttershy looked at him. Was he having a conversation with the spider? "Look, you can easily build another web right?" The spider clicked more slowly. "Then how about you leave this poor girl alone, I'll give you the big jar of flies in my bag, and we'll call it a night?" The spider eyed Fluttershy for a moment, then sighed and nodded. The pegasus smiled, reached into his bag he had strapped around his shoulder, and pulled out a big jar of buzzing flies. He handed it to the spider who took it in its mouth and crawled back into the forest. As soon as it was gone, the pegasus turned to Fluttershy and stretched out his hand for her. "You ok?"

"Y-yeah," Fluttershy muttered as she stood up.

"It's a good thing I was flying through here," he said, "You were almost Arachnomantula food! What were you doing out here anyway?"

"I was just taking a walk," Fluttershy responded. "Thanks for your help...uh..."

"Oh! Dragonfly," the pegasus responded. "The name's Dragonfly. What about you?"

"Fluttershy."

"Whoa!" Dragonfly said with wide eyes. "Our names rhyme! That can't just be coincidence!" Fluttershy giggled.

"Wait a minute," she suddenly thought, "What were YOU doing flying out here anyway?"

"Oh. I was on my way to study a new species of ladybugs I found a few nights ago," Dragonfly replied. "I'm an entomologist see?"

Fluttershy's eyes lit up. "You study insects! That's so fascinating! I tend to animals!"

Dragonfly smiled. "Another non-coincidence between us! Hey, you wanna come with me? Don't worry about anymore giant insects. I'll protect you!" Fluttershy giggled and nodded. After the night she went through, she could do with a little ladybug gazing. Dragonfly reached out his hand and Fluttershy took it as they flew off further into the forest. When Dragonfly stopped, they were resting by a giant tree with hole in the middle. "You wait here," he said, "I'll go introduce you." He walked quietly to the tree and peaked in. "Hello..." he said quietly, although Fluttershy couldn't tell who he was taking to. "Nice to see you again Miss Lady. Yes your antennae DO look great." Fluttershy couldn't help but smile. It was nice to see another pony who didn't just squash every bug he saw, but cared just as much as she would. Pretty soon, he signaled her over and she quietly stepped over to the tree. She looked in and saw the cutest little sight; a small home within the tree with four ladybugs inside. These ladybugs were different from others however. Instead of red shells with black spots, they had forest green shells with white square designs. They were like nothing Fluttershy had ever seen before. She looked over at Dragonfly who had pulled out a notebook and quill and started to scribble.

"What're you writing?" asked Fluttershy curiously.

"Research," replied Dragonfly with a smile. "Wing patterns, strange colors, antennae style, stuff like that. Normally it would be easier to just put the insects in a jar to analyze, but I don't work like that. Capturing poor little insects and putting them in tiny jars? Ugh! I shutter just thinking about it. So I just make friends with the little ones and they let me analyze them."

"That's...beautiful!" Fluttershy sighed. "I've never met another pony who shared my love for little creatures before."

"Same here," Dragonfly replied. After writing down some final notes, he closed the notebook and stood up. "Well, I better be heading home. Do you need me to show you out?"

"Oh no. I know how to get home."

"Alright then. It was nice meeting you Fluttershy. I hope we see each other again soon." As Dragonfly started to fly away, Fluttershy felt a sudden urge in her stomach. She had never felt this urge before, but it was building. She had an idea she knew what it was, but as Dragonfly flew farther and farther away, the urge built more and more until...

"Wait!" Fluttershy shouted. Dragonfly turned around. "W-would you...uh...like to...maybe...do something tomorrow? We could get to...know each other more." Dragonfly looked a little stunned. Apparently no one had ever asked him out before. He looked at Fluttershy and noticed the sparkle in those innocent eyes. She DID have the most beautiful eyes he'd ever seen. She was also nice, and she liked little creatures. Just like him. Maybe a date wouldn't be a bad idea.

"Ok Fluttershy!" he answered. "And I have just the thing. Tomorrow I was planning on going to an entomologist convention in Canterlot. Maybe you'd like to accompany me?"

"That sounds like fun!" Fluttershy said.

"Great. How about you meet me at the train station tomorrow at 5:00, and we'll go over together?" Dragonfly happily suggested. Fluttershy nodded and with that, Dragonfly left the forest with more lift in his step.

"You...did...WHAT?!" screamed the others when Fluttershy told them the next day.

"Fluttershy, darling," Rarity nervously chuckled, "Don't you think it's a bit early to go on ANOTHER date?"

"Besides," Applejack said, "Haven't you learned from the last three fiascos?"

"This one's different," Fluttershy replied with a dreamy smile. "I can tell. We have similar interests, similar personalities, Well hay, even our names are similar! I couldn't help but ask for a chance to get to know him more!" I have a good feeling about this one."

"That's what you said about the other ones!" Rainbow snapped.

"What if he's a meanie bo-beanie?" Pinkie screamed.

"Fluttershy," Twilight said calmly, "We just don't want you to get hurt again."

"Thanks girls," Fluttershy said, "but you won't have to worry this time. I know it! Dragonfly is different from any guy I've met. Now I'm going, and you guys can't stop me." The others just stared at their starry-eyed friend. She was right that they couldn't stop her from going, but at least she couldn't stop them from caring.

"If he breaks your heart too," Rainbow whispered, "Just call and I'll break his arm!" The others nodded.

"Thanks Rainbow," Fluttershy smiled, "Thank you all for caring. You guys really are the greatest friends ever." And they all got together for a group hug.

The next day, Fluttershy arrived at the station in a lovely green sweater and matching skirt, flower sandals, and with her hair up in a graceful bun held by a rose. It wasn't long until Dragonfly arrived as well, wearing a brown turtle neck and tan dress pants. "You look lovely Fluttershy," he said, taking her hand and lifting it up to his lips.

Fluttershy blushed furiously. "Thank you," she replied as they walked onto the train. "Quite the gentleman." The train took off with a whistle and before long, they arrived in Canterlot. The conference hall where they were holding the convention was huge, inside and out. Everywhere there were photos of a vast variety of insects, big and small, display cases of some new catches, and meetings where fellow entomologists could exchange stories over wine. Though it would've probably have been a night of boredom for any of her other friends, Fluttershy couldn't have been enjoying herself more. Not only was she looking at cute little insects and learning more and more, she was doing it with someone who shared her interests. A stallion no less! The night was a blast for them. They laughed, they observed, they drank, they ate, they talked, and they had a hoot and a half! By the end of the convention, they not only left better understanding the world of insects, but as closer ponies.

As they left the train once it stationed in Ponyville, Dragonfly turned to Fluttershy. "So, did you have fun?" he asked.

"That and more," answered Fluttershy. She was a little louder because of the wine, but with Fluttershy, a little louder is almost the volume of a dog whistle. "I never had that much fun with another stallion in my life!"

"I never had that much fun with a mare at all," Dragonfly said softly. Fluttershy turned to him with a shocked expression.

"You mean you've never been on a date before?"

"Oh I have," Dragonfly answered, "but always doing what the mares wanted to do. Whenever I brought up my love of insects, they always closed me out and moved onto a different subject. I-" Dragonfly stopped and sat down at the bench beside him. "-I never could meet a girl who liked me for who I am." Fluttershy sat down next to him and took his hands. They were then staring face to face.

"Any girl would be lucky to have a guy like you Dragon," Fluttershy said softly. An awkward silence followed as each pony's eyes went to each other, then all over. Finally, Dragon broke the silence.

"Uh...Flutters?

"Yes Dragon?"

Dragon gulped a little bit nervously. "Feel free to say no...but...well...would you mind if I kissed you?" At that moment, Fluttershy felt a nervous feeling swelling up inside of her. It always went south with her when she kissed, but she really liked him.

So maybe it was the wine or the attraction to the entomologist in front of her, but she finally stammered, "O-ok."

"Ok," gulped Dragonfly. "Here I go." They both then tilted their head a bit, closed their eyes, and leaned in to kiss each other. The kiss was nothing like Fluttershy had ever felt. It was so warm and enticing...maybe too warm and enticing.

"Oh no," she thought as the kiss continued, "It's happening again! I have to stop before I go too far! I'm going to have to stop! It'll just be like before! He'll see me as a freak and leave! I don't think I can take the heartbreak agai-" Fluttershy's thoughts were cut off by Dragonfly breaking the kiss.

"I'm so sorry Flutters," he gasped. "I can't do this. And it's not what you think. I really REALLY like you! I do! More than any girl I've known! It's just...well...if we're going to start a relationship, I don't want to ruin it by going too fast." Fluttershy's heart gave a leap. Was he saying what she thought he was saying? "So Fluttershy, would you mind if we...well...took it slow?" At that point, Fluttershy's heart went from giving a leap to jumping all the way to the moon and back. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"You...you want to...take it...SLOW?" she asked, hoping that she wasn't dreaming.

"Well...yeah. If you want to," Dragon answered.

That was it. That was the line that broke the moment. Fluttershy forgot all that was around her, and began to cry tears of pure bliss! Of course Dragon thought that they were sad tears, so his first reaction was panic. "Oh my gosh Fluttershy! I'm so sorry! I didn't know taking it to the next step was so important to you! I didn't mean to make you cry! It's just that I care about the future of our relationship and I don't want to be ruuUUIII-" Dragon was thrown back to the side of the bench by Fluttershy who, still being in tears, had wrapped her arms around his neck in a big hug.

"I'm not upset," she cried, "I wanted to take it slow too!"

"Really?" Dragon said surprised, "I never met a pony who wanted to take it slow before!"

"Same here," Fluttershy replied, breaking the hug and wiping her eyes. "Oh Dragonfly! Now I KNOW that we are perfect for each other!"

"I agree," said Dragonfly. At that moment, he felt as chipper as a chipmunk. He felt as though he was on top of the world. He felt like dancing, but then a thought came over him. "By the way, what DO we do if kissing on the lips can go too far?" Fluttershy hadn't thought of that. She definitely wanted to show her affections for him. Holding hands was great, snuggling was fine, a kiss on the cheek would suffice, but what would they do to substitute the lips?

Just then, an idea came to her head, "I got it," she said excitedly. "Why don't we nuzzle noses?" Dragon stared with a confused look. "It's something my mom and me used to do when I was little. We could give it a try!"

"Ok. Why not?" Dragon said, "Let's try it." The two then stuck out their noses, and making the most adorable scrunchy faces, rubbed their noses back and forth. It was too perfect. They couldn't help but laugh. "You were right," chuckled Dragonfly, "That IS fun! Now that we got THAT sorted out," Dragon suddenly straightened up and offered Fluttershy his elbow, "Might I escort you home madame?" Fluttershy giggled and curtsied as she wrapped her arms around his elbow. She looked up to Dragonfly and saw that he was furiously blushing. She then looked down and saw why. Her bosom was pressed up against his arm. Fluttershy began to blush too.

"Sorry," she mumbled.

"It's alright," squeaked Dragon as he regained himself. "It's...like a pillow!" Afraid he may have offended her, he quickly looked at her and sighed of relief when he saw her laughing. Then, linked together, the two pegasus began to walk back to town, feeling as if they were the luckiest in all of Equestria!
