What Happened To Spike
As Spike crawled himself out from the rumble of the ruined city he looked around. His eyes surveying the landscape looking to see if there was any infected coming his way. Not like they would come after him anyway. After all, he could be considered one of them, he wasn’t human. Made in the same lab as the infection, he had the smell of it clinging to him. They just walked right around him as though he wasn’t there.
Unlike everyone else who seemed to struggle, other than starvation, he had no real worries. But he couldn’t help but feel sorry for them, he might not be human but he had feelings. Watching as they were bitten, eaten, as they had to shoot their friends, he couldn’t help but pity them.
Surveying the scene once again and seeing nothing on the horizon, he got up and began to walk. This is his routine, to just walk until he gets hungry or it turns dark, and then he find shelter or food. Over the past few days he hasn’t noticed any infected. In fact it had been exactly eight days since he had last encountered them. He couldn’t help but wonder if they had finally all been killed. But, not like it would terribly affect him anyway, he would just continue living on his own.
On the horizon, a few hours later, he spotted what seemed to be a block. After walking a little farther, he was able to see that it was actually a crude house, with boards hammered to areas where holes had been and windows with no glass. And sitting outside the house was a girl in front of a stone.
Cautiously walking up behind her said “Hello.” She didn’t even acknowledge him, only pulling her legs into her chest as she continued to watch the stone.
“Ummm, are you alright? Do you need something or…” he began.
“She lied to me” the girl croaked out.
“Huh?”
“She promised me she would be with me forever, but that idiot lied to me” She whispered.
“I don’t really understand..”
“SHE’S A LYING BASTARD WHO PROMISED SHE’D BE WITH ME FOREVER BUT INSTEAD SHE WENT AND GOT INFECTED” the girl cried out with tears streaming down her face.
“Hey listen, I don’t really get what you’re talking about but maybe if you tell me a bit more about what’s bothering you, I can help you.”
“My friend, she told me that she would stay with me forever….all our friends where already dead from the infected of course, but we managed to survive. I was a mess and asked her if she would stay by side forever and she said yes. Two days later she turned into one of the infected” she told him as tears leaked out her eyes, before pausing for a minute and then continuing “I had to shoot her, like almost all my other friends” taking deep gasping breaths she stuttered out “I’m a murder…I killed everyone I’ve ever cared about. I’m a monster.”
Spike watched the withering girl, he has saw people get like this before, after anyone killed one of their companions. It was almost as bad as watching the girlfriend killing her boyfriend, that one had involved a lot of tears.
“Hey, I’ve seen tons of other people do stuff like that. You're pretty much normal” he said trying to comfort her.
“That doesn’t comfort me at all.”
“Geez, sorry for trying and make you feel better.”
“I’ll give you credit for trying to make a complete stranger better.”
“I’ve got nothing better to do, even if your kinda weird looking.’”
Stifling a laugh she turned around and looked at him with a smirk and said “You don’t look much better.”
“Hey, don’t diss my hair”
“Psh, don’t diss mine”
“Spike”
“Huh?”
“That’s my name.”
“That’s…different.”
“So what’s yours then?”
“Ameil…..Twilight”
“See, your no better.”
“It’s better than Spike.”
“Yeah right my names awesome.”
“You’re like what twelve, why the heck are you traveling alone?”
“Don’t have any family.”
“They all died?”
“I guess you could say that” he said, thinking of the scientists who raised him.
“How are you still alive, you must be one tough kid.”
“It’s not like that, the infected just ignore me.”
“How!?”
“My smell.”
“How’s your smell different than mine.”
“It has to do with my family issue.”
“Oh-kay, well now that the infection is gone, what are you going to do? I mean you’ll need to live somewhere.”
“Wait, the infections gone?”
“Yep, for a little over a week now.”
“Well I’ve been wandering around for nothing.”
“Nah, you wandered all the way here to comfort me.”
“Sure whatever you say.”
She paused for a bit before speaking again “I haven’t smiled for a while, it feels nice. Since you have no place to go right now, why don’t you stay with me for a bit?”
Contemplating his options, he decided the best answer would be “Sure.”
