Things were pretty good. Spike and Twilight returned from the world of Canterlot High, happy to be back in their own homeland of Equestria. The duo’s return through the portal was much more solid than the last time, thanks to the genius of Pinkie Pie and her fascination with blowing bubbles. The girls were waiting in the library when they appeared before them, and seemed to be less dizzy from the effects of the reality warp.
“Twilight!” exclaimed Pinkie.
The girls were delighted to see their friends back again, and in one piece from equestria’s neighboring dimension. Much like the first time around at the Crystal Empire, they were esteemed and full of questions regarding the duo’s latest adventure.
“You’re back!” voiced Rainbow Dash.
“Thank goodness,” said Applejack.
The girls and drake then commenced in a typical group hug. It was always nice to have the team back together again, regardless of the situation. Things were going pretty well for the seven, especially considering the penultimately recent event in their lives was the fresh responsibility of spreading friendship across Equestria. With such a huge castle as their station, Twilight could tell it wouldn’t be easy, but neither would it be an impossibility either. Things were changing, but they were of course more than ecstatic to welcome the changes with open forearms. Pinkie looked at the right corner of the screen while shaking her head. “Just not the same… But, gotta be positive for the future!”
Rarity trotted in front of Pinkie soon after. “Of course, darlings, we’ve got plenty of intriguing questions for you!”
Much like the first time, Twilight and Spike were exhausted, and in no mood to entertain Rarity’s curiosity. Breaking in her new bed sounded much more comforting. As well for Spike to just indulge himself with a heavenly nap in his new, silk fabric basket.
“Girls, I would love to, but I-“ began Twilight, but predictably, she was cut off by Rainbow.
“Oh no you don’t!”
Twilight and Spike felt a bit confused by Rainbow Dash’s enthusiasm. In fact, the more Twilight looked around, the more she noticed the rest of the girls having pretty positive expressions on their faces as well.
“We figured y’all would come back with no harm done to ya,” Applejack explained to the two. “So, natrally’, we decided to prepare for a nice lil celebration back at Sweet Apple Acres!”
They looked at one another, really wanting to turn in for the day, but they couldn’t possibly say no to their friends who had been optimistic for their return. Twilight relented, if she can partake in hours of studying throughout the night, then she can take the time to converse, and have some fun for a few hours.
“Oh… alright girls, you win,” her highness said defeatedly.
The girls cheered in excitement, especially Rainbow Dash, who would totally cut loose with the apple cider later on. Spike wasn’t really in the mood however, and really did need his sleep.
“How about yerself, Spike? You’re coming too, aren’t ya?” asked Applejack.
“Hmmmm. Nah. I think I’ll just turn in, but you can totally save me some cider and pie for me next time!”
“Ha! If there’s even any left, huh big guy?” Rainbow asked jokingly as she nudged Spike with an elbow.
“Um. Are you sure you don’t want to come?” Fluttershy spoke up, “I mean, you don’t have to if you don’t want to…”
“Yeah, it’s cool you guys. Have fun!” With those words, it almost seemed as if he was trying to rush them off, but furtively.
Twilight was a little concerned; she wondered why he wouldn’t want to enjoy himself like always, and join her and the others on events at certain times. Although, to be fair, doing things such as going on a last minute trip to Canterlot for a surprise party, or a trip to Dodge Junction to find a friend tended to pale in comparison to the comfort of a nice, warm bed, and she knows that his own quarters had his name on it. With a lock and everything, it proved to be quite the fitting place of slumber for the hero of the Crystal Empire.
“You too, Spikey Wikey,” exclaimed Pinkie Pie as she noogied the drake.
“Hey…” Rarity said in an amusingly cold fashion.
“Hey I said it first!” Pinkie Pie responded with little care.
“Okay, girls, settle down... let’s party! Alright?” Twilight questioned, acting as the equalizer of the group. She soon teleported the six girls including herself away to their destination, Sweet Apple Acres.
Meanwhile, Spike smiled deviously, and made his way to his own, personal quarters. Thankfully it was the one right next door to the library, so he quickly embraced the fact that he didn’t have to travel far. “A quick turn around the corner, and here we are!”
He was getting used to his new room, as it was incredibly spaced out, especially for a dragon of his current size. He looked around after locking the crystalline entryway, and his mood could best be described as blissful.
He felt as bright as the fireworks that he had lit during the closing ceremony of the Equestrian Games. Perhaps even as radiant as the statue in his likeness for being a revered hero. He was simply happy as a horse eating hay on a fall season’s day. He made his way to his armoire where he kept his comics, and considered reading the more naughtier material imported from Neighpalm Harbor. After thanking the power of magic that had been placed on it before the library was destroyed, and saving his stash from being blown into oblivion, he opened the armoire.
He gasped. Right there, amongst the many detailed pages was his pink apron, the very same piece of clothing that he’d thought was destroyed in the fire; the one with the red heart laced just outside, on the chest area. He looked at the apron closely, and his happy mood was plagued with doubt, on how Rainbow called him a lame dragon, that he liked to wear aprons in the first place.
He knew Rainbow was only fooling around with him at the time. In fact, she was the one who was concerned about his well being the day after, but it still stung nevertheless. He always pictured himself, as a taller muscular dragon, with bulging muscles, and an incredible strut. Perhaps with a cape, even, constantly flexing in the mirror for the mares to swoon at his feet. He even started using the dumbbell Rainbow gave him for his birthday. Albeit he improved in strength, there were no huge changes to his physical stature, unless he relented to his greedy nature, something he won’t ever resort to no matter the circumstances.
Spike went to the mirror, nearest to his bed. He recently took Twilight’s advice to heart, that only he can make himself feel happy in the end. All the praise in the world doesn’t matter if he wasn’t satisfied with himself. He looked in the mirror, and at that moment, he was happy with what he saw, with what the world saw, with what his fans saw at the Crystal Empire.
His fans loved him for who he was, not for what he wanted to fantasize as. The Great and Honorable Spike, the Brave and Glorious Dragon; He stood right there, in the mirror. A charming dragon that could easily range from being Twilight’s personal testing assistant to being just as immature as the former unicorn herself at times. Not to mention, Rarity’s pin holder for his durable dragon scales, something that nopony could muster through. Quite the honor, that. All in all, here he was, his reflection, a smooth dragon, and no cracks in the mirror to boot.
They loved him. He loved himself.
“I love me,” said Spike.
“Looking good Spike. Looking real good.” He didn’t flex this time, but still made sure to inspect his features while he could. Having a private party with the body he was born with, so to speak. He decided to return to the armoire and get the apron. He now felt attracted to it rather than ashamed to even find it in such good conditioning. He returned to the mirror with the apron being tied around his back, and blushed a little, happy with the dragon in the mirror, a good-looking one at that, especially when compared to most in the world. He was proud that he could look good in pink. It matched pretty well for some scrupulous reason.
Purple, and green scales, emerald eyes, a fairly long tongue, cute claws. “Perfectly curvy rump with a gently coiling tail at the end,” he commented. “Can’t forget that!”
He then noticed it himself; he did have a pretty curvy stature, averagely reptilian and smooth that he would consider being a model for his kind. He wondered if that’s why they were smiling at him when he was blushing furiously in that apron, but then relented to think his friends would have such dirty ideas.
He then remembered an incident back at the Crystal Empire, while he was enjoying the night stroll back towards the palace. He had managed to see a particular crystal pony from earlier, the one with an atom for a cutie mark, walking the opposite direction. Spike wasn’t the type to leave his fans hanging, so he managed to catch up with the stallion, which the admirer was more than surprised that the honorable Spike would come to him at all.
Spike thought nothing of it when he hugged the stallion and apologized, even going so far as to give him an autograph he promised. Then, the stallion said something questionable before he dashed off into the shadows.
“Spike, I… I think you’re cute!”
He remembered it wasn’t just the stallion, it was also a few crystal mares, some giving him subtle looks and lusty glances as he wandered by that night, others he remember gave him obvious compliments on his apparently seductive look.
