Laughter is the Best Medicine
On a rainy day at the Pie Family Rock Farm, little Pinkamena Diane Pie or Pinkie Pie, was looking out her bedroom window feeling depressed. Pinkie never liked rainy days. Rainy days meant she had to stay indoors all day because her parents didn't want her catching a cold. Pinkie was a filly of action. She couldn't sit still for five minutes without feeling the need to move. She was the odd one of her family. She was a vibrant pink pony full of life and excitement, while her family was grey and lacking emotion. The only time they ever showed real joy was at her parties. The first time she saw them smile was at her first party, the same day she got her cutie mark. Her cutie mark was three balloons indicating her ability to plan parties and her enjoyment of them. She hoped one day that her family would loosen up.
"I'm bored," cried Pinkie,"The rain won't go away no matter how many times I sing. Why won't the stupid pegasuses make the rain stop? It's not fair. Now, I have to stay inside all day. Is there anything else that could ruin this day?" She flopped down on the couch with a frumpy expression. She then heard a raspy cough coming from upstairs.
"That sounded like Ma!" Pinkie rushed up the steps speeding into her parents' room. When she got there, her father Igneous Rock was sitting on the bed next to his wife. Cloudy Quartz, Pinkie's mother, was lying in bed with a thermometer in her mouth. The thermometer read 101.4. Pinkie didn't quite understand how thermometers worked, but judging from how her mom looked, it probably wasn't good.
" Ma! Are you okay?" Pinkie asked worriedly.
"I'm fine, dear. Just a little cold. Nothing that won't heal overnight." Her mother assured her.
"Come on, Pinkamena. Let's let Ma rest. Don't disturb her." Her father escorted her out of the room and back down the stairs. Pinkie couldn't stand seeing ponies sick because it made her feel sick. What if her mom never got better? What if she had to be taken to the E.R? She knew that probably wouldn't happen, but that didn't mean it couldn't. Pinkie ran up to her eldest sister's room.
Maud Pie was feeding her pet rock Boulder. When you live on a rock farm, they're the only " pets" you'll be able to find. She was about to place Boulder back in its habitat when her youngest sister Pinkie burst through the door. Maud placed Boulder down and slowly turned to her sister.
"What is it, Pinkie? Must be something important for you to break down my door," Maud said sarcastically.
"Did you hear about Mom?" Pinkie looked worried.
"She has a cold. So, what?" Maud was about to turn around when Pinkie grabbed her by the shoulder and began to shake her.
"SO WHAT?! Our mother is ill! She might not get better. She might have to stay in bed for a long time! Do you want that to happen?" Pinkie shouted angrily. Maud was about to say Pinkie was being silly, but then she remembered how old Pinkie was. She was still just a filly with a wild imagination. Most of the time, that was not a good thing. Maud gently patted Pinkie on the head.
"Dear sister, Mother is not going to have to stay in bed. As long as she rests, I'm sure she'll be fine by tomorrow." Maud said.
"I don't think it's that easy," Pinkie sadly strolled out the room. She headed to her room and jumped onto her bed. She began to think. What would cure Mom? I don't think that icky medicine will help her. What can I give her that would make her feel better? What is the best medicine? Wait! That's it! I know what will heal Mom! She ran out of her room quickly.
She called her family together, not including Cloudy Quartz. Every pony was gathered in the living room wondering what Pinkie Pie wanted.
"Listen up, troops. Mother is sick and in bed. Something I cannot tolerate. No pony should have to stay in bed all day. I know I couldn't. With that being said, we must help out our mother and help her get better." Pinkie announced like a general. Marble, Pinkie's second oldest sister, raised her hoof.
"Um, Pinkie, how are we going to do that?" She inquired.
"Yes, honey. The only thing we can do is let her rest." Her father put in.
"That's what you normal ponies would think. But, I'm not normal. So, here's what we'll do. Lime, get your instrument collection. We've got a show to put on."
Cloudy Quartz was sleeping soundly. Her fever had subsided and was now just a slight one. A few more hours of sleep would get rid of her virus for sure. If she could sleep that long anyway. A loud crash had woken Cloudy from her slumber, and it wasn't thunder. The rain had stopped fifteen minutes ago. So, what was that? Cloudy was well enough to get up and find out. She opened the door and was met by a most pleasant surprise. Marching past her was her family, happily playing instruments as if they were in a parade. What was more surprising was that they were being led by none other than Pinkie Pie. Cloudy was laughing and crying tears of joy. Her whole mood had lightened up. Pinkie's face broke out into a huge smile.
"Mom! You're up! I knew this would make you feel better!" Pinkie exclaimed proudly.
"I do feel a lot better. Who's idea was this?" She asked.
"Pinkamena's. Obviously. I didn't think it would work, but turns out I was wrong. Our daughter is quite something." Igneous proclaimed proudly, as he rubbed his daughter's pink head.
"She truly is. I'm not fully healed, of course. It definitely helped though. But, I must ask. Where did you get such an idea?" Pinkie's mother wondered.
"Well, you know what they say 'Laughter is the best medicine'." And that's a fact.

It was a beautiful day at the Ponyville Elementary School, and today was a very special day. Today was the beginning of a brand new school year. Every little filly and colt were excited. School was fun. The teachers always made things sound interesting. It's never boring. The best part of the first day of school was that friends could reunite and make new ones. Ponyville was a place full of friendly ponies. No pony got looked down upon or were considered better than any pony else. Ponyville was a great place to live in.
Rarity sat down in her seat ready to start the day. Next to her on her left was Cheerilee, a red violet earth pony with a pink mane. Behind her sat a brown Pegasus named Dust Kicker. In front of her was a light grey unicorn filly named Silver Bell. An empty seat was on her right. She figured that the pony hadn't arrived yet. The teacher Ms. Booksmart walked up to the front of the classroom.
"Good morning, every pony! Welcome back to school for another wonderful new year. I hope you all are excited," She received several cheers to which she smiled at. "Now, before we start, I would like to introduce a new student joining us. I expect you all to make her feel welcome. Meet your new classmate, Ditzy Doo." Through the door came a grey Pegasus with a blond mane. The only thing odd about her was her eyes. She would be considered wall-eyed. Every pony tried to hold in snickers, except for Rarity who didn't find this funny in the slightest.
"Hi, every pony! I'm glad I get to be in your class. I hope we can be friends!" She said in a bubbly voice. The fillies once again tried to conceal their laughter. Rarity noticed this and shook her head.
"I'm sure it's not her fault her eyes are like that," She mumbled to herself.
"Go ahead and pick your seat, dear. There's one next to Cherry Berry, Rose, and Rarity. Wherever you want to sit is fine," Ms.Booksmart said.
Ditzy looked around a bit and saw a white unicorn waving a hoof.
"Ditzy, come sit next to me," Rarity offered.
Ditzy let out a smile and trotted over to the desk next to Rarity. The other ponies around her shifted in their seats.
"Now that we're all settled in, let's begin." About four hours later, the school bell rang and the ponies were dismissed. The first day of school was always a half day. Every pony raced outside to get home. Rarity lingered behind. Sliver Bell came up to her.
"Hey, Rares. What's with the mopey face? New kid bug you? She sure bothered me." Silver said.
Rarity rolled her eyes. " What exactly did she do to you? If I recall, she was sitting and listening attentively to Ms. Booksmart's lesson. Why does every pony dislike her?"
"She's different. Her eyes creep me--"
"Is that your only issue? Her eyes? She probably was born like that. That's not a reason for ponies to frown upon her! She hasn't done a thing that has made me not like her. She hardly spoke, but I could tell she's nice." Rarity spoke out, defending the wall-eyed filly.
"Rarity, don't dwell on this. Just forget about--"
" About what? Her? Well, I won't. Nice talking to you." Rarity ran ahead leaving Silver Bell behind.
Rarity quickly got home. She stormed through the front door, clearly upset about something. Her mother Diamond Bun noticed this. She walked over to her sulking daughter.
"What's wrong, sugarplum? Someone looks like they didn't have a good day." She stated.
"It's my class, Mother! A new filly came today, and they're all making fun of her. Just because her eyes are different doesn't mean she has to be mistreated." Rarity muttered.
"Honey, foals are like that. They'll look for anything that they can poke fun at. Most kids do it because every pony else does it, and they don't want to stick out like a sore hoof. I'm glad you're not like that." Her mother ruffled her mane a bit before heading upstairs.
Rarity went to her room. She sat at her work desk. "It's not right. Ponies shouldn't be treated rudely just because they're different. But because of her odd features, no pony is willing to befriend her. Wait! I can be her friend! But, I don't want our greeting be a run-of-the-mill kind of greeting. I know! I'll give her a gift. But what should I give her? It has to be something that will let her know I truly want to be friends. Wait! That's it!"
She trotted over to her special items drawer, where she kept her most valuable possessions. She opened the drawer with her magic and began taking out some objects.
"No, no, no, that's not it. How did that get in there? No, ah! Here it is. I hope she'll like it. It will be hard to give it up, but it's worth if I'm giving it to a friend."
The next day at recess, Rarity looked around to try and find Ditzy. She walked over to Silver.
"Sil', have you seen Ditzy?" She asked.
"You mean Derpy Hooves? She's under that tree," She pointed to a maple tree which Ditzy was beneath.
"Thanks. Wait, who's Derpy Hooves? Her name's Ditzy Doo, is it not?"
"Derpy Hooves is a much more appropriate name." Silver chuckled.
"You are hopeless," Rarity scoffed and she headed in Ditzy's direction. Ditzy noticed her approach and greeted her with a warm smile.
"Hi! Rarity, was it? If I got it wrong, I'm sorry," she said.
"Got it right the first time, Ditzy. Anyway, I came here for a reason. I know the other students have been rather distant towards you, but that's only because they see you as...unique! Yes, that's the word. I want you to know that I would like to be your friend. I don't view you as anything different. And to show my sincerity, I want to give you this," She levitated something out of her saddlebag. Ditzy's eyes widened as she saw what was in front of her. Rarity had placed in her hoof a sparkly sapphire that looked like a Pegasus. It even matched her coat.
"Wow! That looks pricey! Are you giving this to me?" She asked excitedly.
" I am. My aunt gave it to me a few years ago. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I didn't want to lose it. Though, I think you'd appreciate it more than I would." Rarity showed a kind smile. She was happy to see Ditzy happy. Before she knew it, she was engulfed in a hug by a very grateful filly.
"Thank you, Rarity. You're a really generous friend."
She returned the hug. "It was my pleasure."
The Fillyhood of the Mane Six
It was a quiet spring day at the quaint cottage just on the edge of Ponyville and a young yellow Pegasus filly was feeding her pet bunny Angel. Fluttershy had gotten Angel about two weeks ago and had done everything she could to make sure he was comfortable. Ever since she got her cutie mark and discovered she could communicate with animals, Fluttershy began to make friends with all the woodland creatures in the area. The animals were happy they could talk with someone who could help them.
"Fluttershy, dear!" called Gentle Breeze, Fluttershy's mother," Can you come here for a second?" Gentle Breeze was a marigold Pegasus with a beautiful pink mane slightly darker than Fluttershy's.
"Yes, Mommy?" answered the little Pegasus.
"We're going to be having company tonight. Your father's friend is coming over along with his family. He has a daughter only a little younger than you. She's shy just like you. I want you to try and become friends with her," Her mother put a wing around her.
"But, what if she doesn't want to be my friend?" Flutterhshy asked.
"Then that's her loss. If you, at least, try to be her friend, I'm sure she'll open up to you. Besides, who wouldn't want to be friends with a kind filly like you," Gentle kissed the top of Fluttershy's head.
"Thanks, Mom, I'll try to befriend her." They heard a stomping of feet and looked towards the door. At the entrance, Angel was stomping impatiently holding his food dish and pointing at it.
"Oops, sorry, Angel. I'll get you some more food," Fluttershy quickly ran into the kitchen.
A couple of hours later, the guests had arrived. They were friends of Fluttershy's dad, Bronze . He was a tan Pegasus with a yellow-orange mane. Bronze worked at the local blacksmith shop. His friend Iron Copper was one of his co-workers. His wife was Honey Suckle and their daughter was Juniper.
"How are you doing, Genny?" asked Honey. Gentle and Honey were classmates in school for a good number of years.
"I'm doing fine, Hon. And is this who I think it is?" She bent down to look at Juniper who cowered behind her mother. "My, my, Juniper. Last time I saw you, you were just a little baby. Now look at you. I bet you'd like my daughter. Fluttershy!" Gentle called.
Fluttershy came in from outside with three robins on her back. "Yes, Mo-, oh! Hi." Fluttershy muttered quietly hiding behind her mane.
"Now, sweetie," Bronze said," There is no need for you to be shy. These ponies won't hurt you." He pushed her forward with his wing. "Iron, this is our daughter Fluttershy. Flutters, this is Iron Copper."
"Now aren't you a cutie. You did well, Bron." He patted Bronze on the back. The adult ponies talked for about half an hour longer while Fluttershy and Juniper barely made eye contact.Once they had eaten dinner, Gentle and Honey told their daughters to go to Fluttershy's room. So, they did.
Juniper was surprised at the many animals in Fluttershy's room. "Are these all your pets?"
"No, some of them I just take care of. The bunny is my only real pet." They were silent again. I want you to try and make friends with her. Besides, who wouldn't want to be friends with a kind filly like you. Fluttershy knew what she had to do.
"So, Juniper, do you have a pet?" She asked
"No. Papa doesn't think we handle having a pet. He thinks it would be too much work." Juniper replied.
"Well, I guess it can be. Do you want to pet some of these animals?" Fluttershy walked over to a cage and took out a hamster. "This is Hammon. He's very affectionate. Go ahead and pet him." Juniper looked unsure at first, but she reached out a hoof and began stroking him. He leapt from Fluttershy to Juniper.
"Oh, wow! He's soft," Hammon began chattering. " Don't you wish you could understand what they're saying?"
"I can actually. It's my special talent. He wants to know if you have food," Fluttershy quietly giggled.
"I wish I could understand animals. I can make plants grow faster. Don't ask me how. I don't really know," she chuckled. Hammon snuggled into Juniper's fur.
"That's neat. Wow,Hammom really seems to like you. He's never been that affectionate. Would you like to keep him?" Fluttershy offered.
"Oh no! I'd never be able to do it. I'm not good at being responsible," Juniper replied hastily.
"I think you could do it. It might be hard at first, but I think you'd be able to handle it. You've got what it takes," Fluttershy encouraged her. Juniper let out smile.
"Thanks, Fluttershy. But, what about my parents?"
"I can convince them. I can even come by your house once a week to see how you're doing," Fluttershy said.
"You would do that? For me? Why?" Juniper asked.
"You're my friend. My friends deserve kindness," She wrapped her arms around Juniper which she did, as well. "Now, let's go ask your parents."
The two fillies rushed to the living room where the adult ponies were. They then explained what they wanted. Juniper's parents thought about it for a little while.
"Fluttershy, you would come over and help us take care of him?" Iron asked.
"Of course. Unless Mom or Dad has a problem with it. Which you don't, right?" Fluttershy pointed to her parents.
"Not at all, Flutters. This is a great way to use your talent," Her mother replied.
"Very well, Juniper. We may take the hamster home," Honey told her daughter. Juniper sprang into the air and embraced her mom and dad. Bronze winked at his daughter, which she smiled at.
After a few more minutes, the ponies left. On their way out, Juniper gave Fluttershy a big hug. Fluttershy gladly returned it. Gentle and Bronze put their wings around Fluttershy.
"We're proud of you, honey." Her father said. Fluttershy smiled. This day turned out great. All because of a little act of kindness.
The Fillyhood of the Mane Six
Summer, the best time of the year. At least that's what young Rainbow Dash believed. The rainbow-maned filly loved to go flying on warm, sunny days. Except she wouldn't just fly. She would zoom ! When Rainbow Dash would fly past ponies, they'd be left confused wondering if that was the wind.
Rainbow Dash had earned her cutie mark about a week or so ago. She was the only filly in recorded history to pull off a sonic rainboom, and she was proud of that fact. But as time went on, her classmates began to grow envious. None of them could even compete with Rainbow Dash. She didn't realize it because she was too busy flying. Someday, she'd come to recognize the jealousy others ponies hid in their hearts.
"This is the life," Rainbow Dash said with a relaxing sigh, "Flying makes me feel so free." She flew past some of the other Pegasus foals. They were quietly muttering to themselves. Rainbow didn't even bother listening figuring it was of little importance.
"There goes Rainbow Dash. Always moving so fast, you never get a chance to talk to her," whispered Zip, a dark blue Pegasus filly with a dark red mane.
"She sure is a showoff. Doesn't she realize that some pegasi can't even fly?" muttered her twin sister Zap whose mane and coat colors were a tad lighter than Zip's.
"Rainbow's just a natural born flier. Some pegasi are like that. Look at the Wonderbolts. They were probably fast when they were kids," Lightning Blaze, a teal colt, pointed out.
"You're only defending her because of your crush on her," Zip accused smugly.
A blush slowly formed on his cheeks. "W-wha? Crush? I don't have a crush."
"Yah, right. Your red face says otherwise," Zap said pointing to his face.
"Whatever, I'll see you two later. Dad's gonna get mad if I stay out to long," The three foals all soon dispersed.
Rainbow had flown back to her cloud home. When she entered, her mother Rainbowshine greeted her with a wing hug.
"How's my little Rainbow doing?" Her mother asked affectionately.
"Moom, you know I don't like you calling me that!" Rainbow whined backing out of the hug.
"Exactly, that's why I call you that. You know Mom loves to annoy you," Rainbowshine nuzzled her daughter's head which Rainbow returned.
"Hey, Mom? Have you always been a fast flier?" Rainbow asked.
"Pretty much. I enjoyed flying almost as much as you do. I can understand where your love for it comes from. After all, your father is apart of the Equestrian Navy," Her mother explained. Rainbow Blaze was a five-star general in the E.N. The Equestrian Navy comprised of the strongest pegasi, unicorns, and earth pony from each city. While each individual town has its own elite force, the Equestrian Navy would be sent out to defend from foreign countries, such as, the griffons or the dragons.
"But you didn't pull off a sonic rainboom. How come I was able to?"
"Hard to say. When I heard you were the one to pull it off, you can't even imagine how both surprised and proud I was. You're probably just special. I have feeling you'll grow up to become an important part of Equestria," She was more accurate then she thought. Rainbowshine once again nuzzled Rainbow's mane. "I have to go out. The pegasi are planning a light drizzle. They can't start without me. There's cloud muffins in the cupboard." With that, she flew out the nearest window leaving Rainbow Dash alone.
About an hour later, Rainbow Dash had fallen asleep. She ran out of things to do and decided to nap. Her room was the highest in the house, so the noise from outside would be pretty much inaudible. Because of this, she didn't hear Zip and Zap knocking on the door.
"Rainbow? Are you in there? Hello?" Zap kept rapping on the door but didn't hear anypony coming.
"Maybe she's not home," Zip surmised.
"We'll soon find out. Come on," Zap flew to the nearest window which was left open. "Are you coming or what?"
"Oh, Zap, I don't think this is a good idea. Why are we doing this again?" Zip asked confused.
"How many times must I explain this to you? We're going to find the secret to Rainbow Dash's fastness. No Pegasus filly can fly that fast," Zap explained annoyed.
"But what if Lighty was right? What if she is a natural born flier?"
" I doubt that. Lightning's blinded by a crush. He doesn't know any better. I want to find out the truth," Zip reluctantly flew up to her sister. She knew this wasn't the right thing to do, but couldn't work up the nerve to back out of this
Rainbow's ears perked up the moment they entered the house. She could sense somepony was here. She slowly got out of bed trying to make as little noise as possible. "Somepony's in here who shouldn't be. When I found, they'd better have a good reason for being here. Otherwise, I'm going to pound them some reason not to be here," She whispered to herself. She slowly descended towards the bottom floor. She heard some voices.
"Wow! Rainbow has a big house!"
"We're not here to admire her home. We're here to get some answers."
Rainbow sprang out into the open startling both of them. "AHA! Caught 'cha! You better have a good excuse as to why you're here!"
Zap stepped forward, "We're here to discover the secret to your speed. You must take some kind of potion or something. Nopony, and I mean NO pony should be able to fly that fast. Right, Zip?"
Zip looked down, "Yah, what she said."
Rainbow stood there for a few seconds. Zap couldn't tell if she was surprised by the question or not. She suddenly began bursting out laughing.
"What's so funny?"
Rainbow had to catch her breath before she could respond, "Oh, man! You two are funny. My speed doesn't come from anywhere except from me. In case you haven't realized, it's my special talent." Rainbow pointed to her cutie mark. "Do you really think I'm a fake? Especially after pulling off that sonic rainboom?"
"See that? Right there. You can pull off incredible feats that no other Pegasus could even dream of doing. Flying seems to come so naturally to you. And some of us can't even get off the ground! You make all grounded pegasi feel bad." Zap raised her voice.
It took some time for those words to sink in. Once Rainbow understood the meaning, her ears lowered, and her wings drooped.
"I make other pegasi look bad?" Rainbow asked with a slight quiver.
"Yup. You do."
"Zap, do you even realize what you're--"
"Zip it, Zip. Leave this to me," Zap said prideful.
"I-I hadn't realized. I was too busy flying. I didn't even bother considering anypony's feelings."
"Well, maybe you should start consid--"
"Zap! Enough! Continuing to insult her won't make this situation better. I'll handle this. Rainbow, what my sister is trying to say is that since not all ponies are especially gifted, they mope around those who are. You're not a bad flier, Rainbow Dash. Far from it. But instead of just flying all the time, maybe you could help out those who struggle with flying. They'd surely see you in a better light." Zip put an arm around Rainbow. Zap was shocked that her sister had said all those things. She was a little jealous.
Rainbow let out a sigh, "Thanks, Zip. And thank you, Zap for pointing it out to me. I-I think I'll take your advice. I never wanted to make anypony feel bad. I'm glad you guys broke in." At that moment, Rainbow Blaze came home from a tiring day.
"Dash? What's going on?"
Rainbow smiled at the two sisters. "Nothing, Dad. These two were just giving me some flying tips. And boy, did it help."
