//-------------------------------------------------------// An Unexpected Friendship -by Smartkiwi- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// The Daily Life of Octavia Melody //-------------------------------------------------------// The Daily Life of Octavia Melody Seventeen-year-old Octavia Melody sat in her little dark room, where nothing existed save herself, her cello, and the music she played. Any normal pony would find this very lonely or sad. But Octavia was definitely no normal pony. Her absolute passion was music, for she believed that music is what emotions sound like, and the more passionate anypony's emotions are the more passionate their music will be. For this reason, she never understood why other ponies had to try to play music. She figured either not everypony had passionate emotions or they simply couldn't pour them into their music. Either way, Octavia found as close to second nature as it gets. To Octavia, it was as natural as walking or speaking. So, there she sat in her little dark room, where she was the only pony, her cello was the only instrument, and her beautiful music was the only sound. And she loved this place more than anything it the world, because it was the place she could escape to anytime she wished to. Suddenly, as if curtains had just been opened and shed light on her little dark room, a loud, deep voice interrupted her music. "Octavia? Equestria to Octavia?" After a few minutes of ignoring the voice, it came again. "Octavia? This isn't funny, you must stop doing this!" Stop doing this? Stop doing what? Stop playing? Stop ignoring them? Stop sitting? Stop what?! Ugh, how she hated when ponies weren't specific enough. So, to end the confusion, Octavia stopped playing, though she wished not to, stood up, and opened her eyes, only to see the blinding light and lose all confidence she had before. "Huh?" she awkwardly asked nopony in particular. "Where am I?" Memories started flooding back into her mind. She had been asked to play one of the songs her class had been learning. It was a very beautiful song, and only five or so measures into the song, she lost control and started playing her own song. It was a song not written on paper, for it was not a song to be memorized. This was Octavia's song, the song she played most often in her little dark room. Every time she played this song, it was slightly different. For if she was feeling sad, some notes would be lower, longer, and each note mattered more to the song. However, if she was feeling excited or joyful, the song would be higher or quickly switch between high and low notes. It was all very complicated, and Octavia felt she was the only one who understood how much music is linked to her emotions. Then again, there were people who simply played music without a second thought. It was just music, why would they play it according to anything? They were either playing, or not playing, and that was all that mattered to them. Octavia escaped her deep thoughts and was back in the band room. Looking around, she saw many ponies staring directly at her, some chuckling or whispering to others. Octavia then looked directly in front of her, and immediately recognized the source of the loud voice. It was her and the rest of her class' music instructor, and she was in the middle of an orchestra practice! "Ohhhh!" Octavia said as she hid her face behind her hooves. This was so embarrassing! And this was the fourth time it had happened, too! That's what her instructor meant by, "You must stop doing this!" Now I'm really in for it. "Miss Melody! I simply asked you to play number 23, not a ten-minute original solo." Octavia heard several ponies giggling, but she pretended not to notice and continued listening to her instructor's lecture. "Although it was rather amazing," he continued under his breath, obviously not wanting anyone to hear him. This time he talked louder than regular. "You need to learn to focus, Octavia." After he spoke, he face-hoofed, sighed, then looked back up at Octavia. "You understand, right?" Without hesitation, Octavia replied. "Yes, sir. I'm sorry." Octavia quickly walked to the back of the band room and out the door. She headed towards the bathroom. Of course she didn't really have to go, but she didn't want to deal with being in there anymore. She looked around the corner of the bathroom before walking inside. "Yes! Empty!" she whispered to herself while pumping her fist in the air. You see, most ponies would assume she came in here to mope or cry. Did you? Octavia has many flaws but one thing is for certain. She was a strong, independent mare who preferred dealing with her own problems and never blamed others for her tragedies. Not that Octavia considered many things that happened to her a tragedy. After a few minutes of waiting, Octavia walked out of the bathroom and back to the band room, just in time to see her three friends walk out. "Your still on for tonight, right guys?" She heard Violatte ask Harpone and Lyra. "Of course, dude! I'm already there." Harpone replied. "Hey, wait up!" Octavia said as she waved and ran up to her friends. "Are you guys going somewhere or something?" "Oh, yeah. We were just gonna go hang out, it's nothing you'd be interested in." Lyra replied. Octavia didn't get upset over little things normally, but that small remark pissed her off for reasons she couldn't describe. "Nothing I'd be interested in? Why is that? I am part of the friend group too, aren't I?" replied Octavia, trying not to sound hot-headed while still sounding offended. "Oh, no, it's not like that at all. Really." Lyra reassured her. "You see, well......." Violatte quickly jumped in to the rescue. "Look, it's not that we don't want to hang out with you. It's just that, well....we were planning on going to a.....a.....club." Octavia immediately realized why she wasn't told about this. It was no secret that Octavia absolutely despised the atmosphere of clubs. I mean really, what was the point of it all? "We know how much you hate going out at night." Violatte continued. "So we didn't invite you." Everypony knew this was true. Octavia knew this was true. She would much rather prefer staying home and reading a good book or something. But for some reason she felt like an obligation to be a fun person. Everybody treated her like she was a stick-in-the-mud that nobody could have any fun with. She decided right then and there that she would be more outgoing and open to new things. I mean, she'd never exactly BEEN to a club in the first place. What's the worst that could happen? "Who says that I don't like going out for the night? As a matter of fact, I would love to go to a club. I'm due for a night out!" Octavia said as she plastered on a fake smile, trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible. Lyra, Violatte, and Harpone all looked at her suspiciously. Lyra looked at Harpone, as if telepathically communicating with him. "You sure?" she asked, looking over to Octavia, still with a suspicious look. "Positive. See you guys tonight!" she beamed as she waved goodbye and headed out the door. As soon as she was out of her friends' sight, her smile faded. "What have you gotten yourself into, Octavia?" she asked herself as she slowly walked away. Author's Note Hey guys! I know I've only done one chapter on my story Pinkie's Perspective, but I'm having a hard time coming up with more ideas for that one. I am really enjoying writing this one, because I am a huge Octavia and Vinyl fan. I know, I know. It's not going to be a romantic Octavia and Vinyl story, but I think it can still be a great Tavi/Vinyl story. And I realize Octavia's sudden urge to be outgoing was very rushed, but I was so excited to get this story out. I may come back to it later. Who knows? Also, I searched EVERYWHERE and I couldn't find the names of the 3 other members of the quartet Octavia is in. So I made up two and, of course, used Lyra. By the way, Violatte's name is pronounced Vee-o-let. 'Cause, you know, violas? Violatte? It's not just a fancy spelling of Violet. Anyways, this chapter was all about Octavia and her daily life, so the next one will be about, you guessed it, Vinyl!!!! After that, I think it will switch between their perspectives, even when they do end up hanging out together. The idea for this story was showing Octavia and Vinyl's different perspectives of the same things. I dunno, we'll see. Enjoy! :raritywink: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/raritywink.png //-------------------------------------------------------// The Daily Life of Vinyl Scratch //-------------------------------------------------------// The Daily Life of Vinyl Scratch DJPon3. One of the most recognizable names in the music industry. She is a maniac, a total party animal who does whatever she wants on a Friday night with not a care in the world for Saturday morning. You have no idea how sick I am of hearing that. You see, just because I'm a DJ and I like Dubstep and Electronic music I'm a rebel, a raver, and utterly irresponsible. To be honest, most of it is true. But to a certain extent, okay? My personality is often EXTREMELY exaggerated. Anyways, I want you to know what it's really like for me. There were many sounds, such as the fans cheering, the photos being snapped, and the people backstage instructing. They all fought for DJPon3's attention, but none stood the chance against the music she could feel flowing through her veins. Down her arms, through both hooves, and into her DJ setup. The music then soared into the air near the audience and through the wires connecting to her headset. The electricity running through the wires felt much like the way her music was sent through her veins, playing music. It was as if she was part of a well-oiled machine. Vinyl Scratch is an entirely different person. THIS, is DJPon3 to the core. The DJ so deeply connected to her music, which mesmerizes herself and others. The thing she enjoys more than anything. But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. DJPon3 checked her stop watch. The DJ never planned out what she would play, but she would also never walk into a performance completely blind. Most of the time, she would plan ahead basic mixes she would use. Still, most of it was unpredictable. Anyways, she checked her stop watch. The reason she did this was that she would often keep her song going for too long. Seeing she had kept this up for over 7 minutes, she quieted down the music in a nice finish. She yelled into the mic to the crowd before leaving the stage. "Thanks for coming, everybody! Stay awesome!" That was kind of her catchphrase. DJPon3 walked off the stage and signed a few autographs before trotting home. She was moderately famous, at least in the music industry. Suddenly, this pony was not DJPon3 anymore, but rather Vinyl Scratch. So, Vinyl Scratch trotted home. Vinyl was exhausted from the show. It was particularly long and there were more ponies that attended. Since she had about an hour before her late-night shift started, Vinyl took a short nap on her couch to avoid falling asleep right in the middle of pouring somepony's drink. At least it's late-night, there won't be as many people as there would be at her standard 9:00-11:00 shift, so she wouldn't need to work nearly as hard. You see, although Vinyl was a very good DJ, it was not enough to earn a living. So, Vinyl was a bartender at a club she often DJ'ed. That club was like a second home to her. Vinyl often flirts with ponies to get better tips. Vinyl would flirt with colts as well as mares. No, not because she's bi. No, not because she's a lesbian but won't admit it. No, not because she's crazy, either. In fact, Vinyl Scratch is very much straight. The real reason is because many colts find her attractive, but naturally there are rumors about her being a lesbian. Vinyl just lets the rumors spread, because she honestly doesn't care. If someone bothers to ask her, she will tell them the honest truth, though. She is thought to be lesbian because of sexuality stereotypes. Lesbians are supposed to be either more masculine than normal or more feminine that normal. Same could be said about gay colts. But while they do apply sometimes, these stereotypes are often incorrect. Since Vinyl seems to fit the stereotypes, she is thought to be a lesbian, and that's that. Most ponies feel negatively in one way or another about Vinyl flirting with any costumer that looks like they have money to spend. To that, Vinyl simply will say, "What's the problem? I get some extra money, and they feel happy because they are worth flirting with. We both benefit, and that's what matters." That is the way Vinyl Scratch thinks. The consequences far are more important than the action itself. For example, white lies are considered okay by most ponies because it makes another pony feel happier, while lies in most other situations are considered bad. They are both lies, they simply have different consequences. Or how murdering an innocent citizen is a horrible thing to do, while executing a mass murderer is not. It's the way everypony thinks, really. Vinyl is simply one of the few who understands it. Somewhere in this deep, philosophical thinking, Vinyl fell asleep on her cozy little couch. Some time later, Vinyl wakes up from her nap. Felling well-rested, she jumped from her couch and out the door, down the street and towards the club. She checked her pocket mirror when she approached the building. After all, studies show that the prettier the employee, the more they get paid. Vinyl walked into her booth, and looked around for somepony to flirt with. Ahah! A classy-looking mare with a beautiful, dark brown mane and cute pink bowtie. Perfect. She probably has money to burn! She walked over to the mare. "What I can get a cute mare like you?" The mare had been looking in a different direction, obviously deeply thinking. Upon hearing Vinyl's words, she slightly jumped and turned her head towards Vinyl. "Oh, I-I don't.... I mean, I've always preferred wine." The mare said with a Canterlot accent not thick enough to be hard to understand, but still be attractive. She was speaking very awkwardly and unnaturally, but Vinyl just found it adorable. "So, nothing, then?" Vinyl asked, confused by the mare's stuttering. The mare blushed, obviously embarrassed. "No." "Then, may I ask why you are sitting at the bar?" Vinyl asked, trying her best to not to laugh. "Oh, I'm sorry. Are you asking I move?" she asked, still blushing. "No, it's perfectly fine. In fact, I like having you around." Vinyl asked, feeling drawn to the mysterious mare. The mare smiled. "Thanks." "You got a name?" Vinyl asked while drying a clean cup. "Pardon?" The mare asked. Vinyl sighed. "What's your name, miss?" "Oh," The mare blushed more than she had the entire time she'd been talking to Vinyl. "My name is Octavia." Author's Note Woo! Finally got this chapter done. It took about a week to write it, working on it over an hour at least 5 of the days. I really wanted this one to be well thought out and a great introduction to Vinyl. Anyway, in the next chapter you'll be hearing more about Octavia's perspective on her and Vinyl's meeting, and the events leading up. It should be out around next Friday, but I really don't know. Hope you liked this chapter! //-------------------------------------------------------// The Club //-------------------------------------------------------// The Club Octavia sat at her table, and thought. That's all. Not eating, not talking, just thinking. Somehow, Octavia had been sucked into going to a club with Lyra, Violette, and Harpone. Why did she do it? Why did she agree to come? Octavia face-hoofed at the thought of what she had said. Why couldn't she have just passed on it? She tried to convince herself that she was just being dumb, but she couldn't deny that she knew exactly why she had done it. Octavia is the absolute opposite of an extrovert. She had no idea why anypony would pass up a night at home with a good book and lots of food to go to a club and "rave". Octavia wasn't quite sure what that meant, but it sounded ridiculous. But because of her introverted and goody-two-shoes personality, she is often excluded from...well, everything! Everypony just assumed she would never want to go. In fact, most of the time she would not. But just knowing that other ponies wanted to be with her, to know she was desired, would make her feel happy. Even though Octavia hated every minute of every club or party she had ever been to, she knew it was her own fault. She was the pony that never laughed. She was the pony that never danced. She was the pony that never even talked to anypony else! This is what Octavia wanted more than anyone else. I am ready to make an effort to turn my life around! If I just try hard enough, I will meet somepony. I will be cool. And most importantly, I will have fun! Having just awoken from her deep thinking, Octavia turned her head toward the clock on her wall. It was 9:37. Octavia was meeting her friends at 10:00, so she figured she had better leave soon. She stood up from the table, and trotted over to her room. What is a pony to wear to a club? "I usually just wear a bowtie," Octavia said to herself. "I guess it is a bit strange to wear a bowtie to a club." But nonetheless, Octavia picked out her standard pink bowtie and tied it around her neck. Octavia was never one to care about looks, so she simply combed her mane and brushed her coat, not bothering with makeup or perfume. But she still felt satisfied when she was done. Octavia paused before trotting out the door. "Am I seriously doing this?" She asked herself in her hesitation. It may have seemed like big deal to anypony else, but to Octavia this was the start of a whole new lifestyle. She was going from introvert to extrovert. Shy to brave. Party pooper to party animal! She had do it. At least, she had to try. Feeling like she just won the argument with herself, she shook her head and resumed walking out the door. "Look out world, here I come!" She called out, even though she was thinking, "Please, world. Show me mercy!" When Octavia arrived at the entrance, she immediately saw Lyra and Harpone standing next to each other, motioning Octavia towards them with their hooves. "Hey guys!" she greeted as she walked up to them. "Wow, you came! I totally thought you were gonna back out." Harpone said, very surprised. Octavia felt a bit flattered, but still a bit offended. "Yeah, I'm here....." "Are we just waiting for Violatte?" Octavia continued. "No, she couldn't make it. She hooked up with a cute stallion tonight, if you know what I mean," Lyra said while winking at Octavia. "Oh......I see." Octavia replied while winking back, trying not to make the fact that she had absolutely no idea what Lyra was talking about obvious. "Well, what are we waiting for?" Lyra asked nopony in particular. "Let's go!" The moment Octavia entered the room, a huge wave of sound overpowered Octavia's ears, causing her to fall to the ground, screaming. "Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is that awful noise?!?!?!?!?!" She shrieked. By now, Octavia had caught the attention of many ponies, who each stared at her with an odd look. "Octavia..." Lyra said just loudly enough that Octavia would hear her but nopony else would. "Get a hold of yourself!" Though struggling, Octavia managed to stand up. Still covering her ears to protect them from being permanently damaged-or at least that's what she thought she was doing-Octavia walked with Lyra and Harpone. The ponies who were staring shrugged it off and went back to their own business. "What is this awful noise?!" Octavia asked, much quieter this time. "What? You mean the music?" Harpone asked. Octavia was shocked. This garbage was considered music? She wasn't sure if she should burst out laughing or faint. "Oh. I guess." Is all Octavia could manage to say, while her mouth hung open. The whole situation was very overwhelming. I haven't even talked to anyone, and I'm already freaking out! She didn't really want to leave her friends, but she felt the need to get away from all the noise. "I need to use the restroom, I'll meet you guys later." "Okay, you want me to come with you?" Lyra asked. "Oh, n-no. I'm fine. But thanks!" Octavia replied as she dashed away. Lyra and Harpone exchanged confused glances, before shrugging and walking away. She headed for the bathroom. Obviously, she didn't really need to go, but it was very quiet. So, she just washed her hands, checked her mane, and occasionally made faces in the mirror. But she knew she couldn't hide in the bathroom forever. She decided she would hang out in the bar section. But, getting drunk was probably not the best idea. She had a big solo tomorrow morning, and being hungover would not help at all. Besides, if Octavia was to have alcohol, she would much prefer wine. It was more refined, and made her feel less, well, weird-stallion-that-always-gets-drunk-at-the-bar-by-himselfish. So, she walked out of the bathroom and headed towards the bar. It was a bit confusing, and the loud noise-which she refused to call music-was making her lightheaded and dizzy. But when she finally made it, it felt so good to sit down at the bar stool and relax. So......What should I now? I could go dance, I could stay here, or I could go home. At the moment, none of those ideas sounded very good. After thinking about her choices for a little while, she made a decision. She would stay at the bar for a little while longer, and try to start up a few conversations. If she must, she would get up and wander a bit. Suddenly, Octavia heard a voice that interrupted her deep thinking similarly to how her director interrupted her music. "What can I get a cute mare like you?" "Huh?" Octavia said as she turned to look in the direction the voice was coming from. Octavia's brain took a little while to process what the mare had said. "Oh, I-I don't.... I mean, I've always preferred wine." Was all Octavia managed to say. She felt incredibly dumb, replying to a simple question so awkwardly. Octavia just barely noticed the mare's odd appearance. She had a neon blue and navy blue mane which had very obviously been dyed. She also wore a pair of purple glasses which completely covered her eyes. Octavia couldn't even tell what color her eyes were! "So, nothing then?" The mare asked, obviously confused. "No." Octavia replied, this time smiling. ''Then, may I ask why you are sitting at the bar?" The mare asked. "Oh, I'm sorry. Are you asking me to move?" Octavia asked. Why didn't I think about that? If I sit at a bar, people are going to think I want to drink something! Duh! "No, it's perfectly fine. In fact, I like having you around." The mare replied. "Thanks." Octavia said. Is this mare flirting with me? Is it really this easy? No, it can't be. Somehow, this feels fake. It feels too.....perfect. "You got a name?" The mare suddenly asked. "Pardon?" Octavia asked. She had never heard someone talk in such a ridiculous manner. "What's your name, miss?" she asked after sighing. That sounds much better. Why can't some ponies just talk in understandable English? Is that so much to ask? Octavia could feel herself blushing as she replied. "Oh. My name is Octavia." No longer did this feel fake. It felt real. But Octavia did not feel attracted to this mare. It was something else. Something even more complicated than attraction. What it was, Octavia had no idea. Author's Note Sorry this chapter took so long to write. I was very busy these past few weeks. I'm also planning on starting up one more story! :derpytongue2: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/derpytongue2.png
