Chapter 1: What Came Before

The day of the Great Cataclysm, the day the Earth shattered, was the day that my vision came true. I am a seer, a person who can see beyond what normal people can. My particular gifts lie with being able to see the future through my dreams. Though that’s not all I can see, I can see the bonds of life, things like the love between two people who may not even see it themselves. With these gifts I learned to see beyond time and space, to see the future of our current path. That path, the path of humanity, was always heading for this. It was late summer when it happened, the late afternoon sun was shining through the trees and I was once again dealing with my dad.

As much as I love him he can be a royal pain, we were once again arguing about something that I “supposedly” did wrong. As the argument settled down I leaned against the frame of the glass window in our house that overlooked the mountains to the west. While looking out at the mountains, the golden Autumn light dappling the deck I realized that my vision was about to come true. Though I realized this about half a second before the ground began to shake. Across the land from us, miles away, the mountain that had erupted in my vision began to erupt before my very eyes.

While I watched I was blissfully unaware of what else was happening. Across the globe similar events were happening. Volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, all of the plagued the world. The resulting effect on humanity was devastating; the disasters wiped out six-sevenths of our world’s population. Six billion people were killed during the Great Cataclysm, but that was far from the end of the struggles. Hours after the Great Cataclysm something happened, something good. From seemingly nowhere came six powerful beings, each goddesses in their own right.

Together the six beings cleansed the earth of its damages. Their magic, something that was foreign to us, began to clean the world up. Pollution that had once choked the air of many cities was wiped clean. The poisoned lakes, rivers and oceans became clean. Lava flows halted, floods receded, and the world began to grow again. Magic itself began to seep into the world and it’s people. As the magic began to seep into the people it changed them. Those who had natural abilities that related to the use of magic began to experience new abilities. People who had no magical ability were passed over by it and left unchanged.

Soon it came to be public knowledge that the beings, who had saved us, were ponies from the land of equestria. Naturally some scoffed, while others were curious. Upon meeting with the people of earth the ponies set out to restore the land to order. The first thing these six ponies did was to institute a new government. Some were unhappy about this but begrudgingly went along with it. The new government centered around our saviors.

These ponies assumed an executive role. Laws that needed to be passed were made by the new, lower, courts that consisted of both ponies and humans. Challenges to the laws were brought before them and evidence was presented for each side. To determine who was right there was a five pony vote. Depending on the number of votes for each side the fifth pony would be the swing vote. The one pony who didn’t vote was often responsible for collecting the arguments, analyzing them and potentially vetoing the rest of the council.

Though, before the ponies could come en masse there needed to be a way for them to pass from Earth to Equestria with ease. With the help of both humans and ponies the first ever teleport gate was created. By combining human technology and Equestrian magic the princesses were able to make a permanent gateway to Equestria. Soon construction of a similar gate began on the Equestrian side, and in two months ponies and people were able to travel to and from Earth.

Weeks later smaller teleport gates were installed into all cities on Earth and Equestria. While all seemed good for a while, the resentment of the humans who wanted nothing to do with ponies began to boil over. Soon there were attacks on humans and ponies alike. Under the banner of the six princesses a force of ponies and humans set out to stop the violent attacks. Though the princesses drove back the violent people they didn’t totally stop them.

Five months after the victory that drove the violent rebels back they resurfaced, stronger than ever. The ensuing battle was fought by the blessed, people who were given magic by the princesses, and ponies who wished to help. In the end the violent rebels fell, either dying or surrendering. Those who surrendered were taken to camps where some of the best therapists tried to help them overcome their problems.

As the world settled once more the populations of humans and ponies began to truly mingle. Soon ponies and humans taught at the same schools while both ponies and humans attended classes. Magic was taught to the gifted humans while ponies with skills for technology learned about electricity and machinery.

This is where my tale really begins. I am a teacher at COES, which is also known as Central Oregon Elementary School. I teach history, which is kind of ironic considering that I knew this was coming. My name is Benjamin Gutman and along with my two friends, Azalea and Paden, I ended up facing off against one of the darkest threats to ever strike across Earth and Equestria. And to think, it all started with a “grave robbery.”
