Don't Drop the Bass
Fillyhood
Load Full StoryBass Scratch smiled as he proudly lifted his newborn filly. His eyes glowed. "She's beautiful, isn't she, Octave?" Bass said proudly, but got no answer in return. "Octave?" He looked at his wife and gasped. She wasn't moving. "Octave!" Bass placed the newborn filly in the crib and called for the doctor. As the doctor ran in, Vinyl Scratch, Bass's barely one year old filly walked in. "Daddy? Is everything ok?" The doctor bit his lip. "I'm sorry, Mr. Scratch. She.. She's..." Bass felt tears fill his eyes as he saw his lovely wife lay still on the bed. He sniffles and picked up the newborn. "She looks just like her..." He whispered. The filly was a light brown Earth pony with a dark brown mane, like her mother. "I'll name after you..." He whispered to his dead wife. He smiled slightly as the newborn cried softly. "Your name is.... Octavia."
Vinyl, however, was not as excepting of the new filly as her father was. Although young, Vinyl knew that Octavia was the reason for her mother's death. And she hated her for it. So she took every opportunity she could find to harass, embarrass, or scar the young filly. But as the years went on, Octavia grew more and more attached to Vinyl, much to her disgust. So over the years, Vinyl had to hide her hatred for the brown filly, while showing her fake love.
-------------------------------Years later--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vinyl and Octavia had entered their fifth year of school. They were both learning so much about themselves, that Vinyl was surprised each day she didn't get her cutie mark.
"...so who can tell me who the deaf classical musician is?" Miss Cheering, the teacher, asked. Vinyl, bored like always, was busy doodling on her paper. She drew a giant cannon that shot out music notes. "Pew pew pew.." She muttered distractedly, doodling some more on her paper. "Miss Vinyl Scratch!?" Miss Cheering called. Vinyl cringed. "Do you mind answering the question, Vinyl?" She asked. Vinyl looked at her blankly. She hadn't even heard the question. "Uh... Um...." "Well, Miss Scratch?" "Ludwig van Neightoven." A voice in the back said cheerfully. Miss Cheering smiled. "Thank you, Octavia. Maybe you should teach your sister a thing or two about paying attention." Vinyl growled, grinding her teeth. Octavia was always a show off, another reason Vinyl despised her. She looked at her, but Octavia just smiled. Vinyl narrowed her eyes and forced a smile on her own face. Every day her hatred for her sister grew. The only thing that could possibly make Vinyl hate her more is if she got her cutie mark before her. Vinyl's red eyes glowed with hate, picturing it happening. "I WON'T let her get hers before me." She growled. She sighed and looked up at Miss Cheering. She was talking about a talent show in two weeks. "...if Anypony wants to sign up, write your name on the paper, next to what category you will be in: Comedy, music, magic, or something else." Vinyl perked up. This would be the PERFECT place to get her cutie mark. She just had to pick the right thing. She thought for minute then put her head on her desk. "I want to dance!" Derpy exclaimed, flying up from her desk and falling on her face.. "I want to sing!" Stinking Rich called out. "I'm gonna be the best!" Rainbow Dash exclaimed. "Nuh, uh!" Filthy Rich retorted, standing up. Vinyl groaned as they started arguing. She lifted her head and noticed her drawing of the music cannon. "Hehe..." She smirked, wishing there recalling was a music cannon to blast her problems away. Music, drawing and her imagination were Vinyl's only way of getting away from the world.
"I'm going to play the cello!" Octavia's voice rose above Everypony else, and they grew quiet. "The cello?" Rainbow Dash laughed. "Like, classical music?" The whole class started laughing. Octavia held her ground. "My mother played the cello, so I'm going to try to be like her." Here seared through Vinyl. "You never knew her!" She screamed, causing the entire room to go quiet. "She died because of you, yet you're Dad's favorite!" She was standing now, tears streaming down her face. "She would be here is it wasn't for you!" Vinyl screamed as she ran out the door.
Octavia stared at her, her heart breaking.
