A Beautiful Night.

Night One: An Odd Encounter

Ponyville was normally a safe place to live. But, here lately it become more dangerous especially at night. The mayor of Ponyville has appointed someone to watch over Ponyville at night. No other pony wanted to take the job. Then again he was not like most ponies. He was a strange one for sure. He personally like that about himself. He would go out each night around ten o’clock, and stay up till dawn. He slept during the day.

He liked it. He was not a very social type of pony. The night was his playground. Most ponies were afraid to be alone at night. Fear ran through their minds after the Ursa Minor attacked. Even with a new alicorn princess around. They felt safe knowing someone was watching over the town went they were resting their heads.

The pony in question was a strange looking earth pony. He had dull orange fur, with a bright yellow tail that was in an odd zigzag shape. He had no mane upon his dome. It was because of accident in his past. On his face was a bright orange pair of oddly shaped glasses. They looked almost like sun glasses but, they didn’t help block out any light. They were mostly for style. They did help his less than great eye sight. His cutie mark was light bulb that was being hit by a lightning bolt. It was a strange mark for a strange pony.

The town was quiet like most nights. A few people had lights on. They putting their little fillies to bed. He made sure to never shine his flashlight into any windows. He felt it was rude to the families. On top of that he would hate to spoil a caring moment. The streets were empty. It was a bit chilly that night but, he didn’t mind it that much. The night was peaceful to him. It soothe him to walk around, and look up at stars.

He took a breather he started to relax. He kept his eyes on the street. Usually he didn’t take his job too seriously. It was peaceful in Ponyville for the most part, and most threats to small little town were dealt with by the princess and her friends. Which just made his job that much easier. Yet, deep down he still felt like he was needed, even if it was just to make the people sleep a bit easier.

He made one more sweep around the area checking all alleyways, and dark corners of the small town. After that was done; he decide that he would do one more walk around the outskirt of the town. Then he would just go home, and play video games for the rest of the evening.

He was now on the outskirts of town near the spot where a herd of cows also charge into town. He was just about to turn around went he saw a small black dot in the distance. He couldn’t tell what it was from where he was standing, and it was too far away for the flashlight. The black dot came floating down from the sky. Landing on nearby hill that over looked the town.

This was very strange. Usually a Pegasus won’t come down from cloudsdale at night. So that meant it had to be something else. He gulp in the shadows not knowing what was ahead. He had to brave for the sake of the ponies in Ponyville. He got all of his courage up, and walked out into the darkness.

He made sure to keep himself quiet. He even turned the flashlight off to make sure he was not spotted. He crept up the back of the hill slowly, wondering what horror awaited him. He found himself behind a large oak tree that was at the top of the hill. He slowly peek around the tree to get a good look at whatever was on the edge of the hill.

If his jaw could have hit the ground it would have in that moment. What stood in front of him was something he never thought he was would see upon this hill. It was Princess Luna. One of the rulers of the land. He had never seen a royal in the flesh before. Usually they came during day or where the town had a big event. But, he always stay home for those events.

He had no idea what he should do at this point. Should he greet her? Should he bow and ask forgiveness for spying on her? He was freaking out a bit. He tried to shake those thoughts from his mind. The best thing for him to do in his mind was to just leave her alone. He turned himself round slowly as his luck kicked in. He would step straight on a small twig. He looked down as the sound echoed. A frustrated sigh escaped his lips as a voice called out.

“Who is there? Show yourself!” She said in strong tone of voice. As the horn on her head started to glow faintly

He came out from behind the tree slowly. “I am sorry your Majesty. I was not spying on you I swear. I saw you come down from the sky, and didn’t know what you were at first. Forgive my rudeness.” He said bowing to her hoping he had not offended her. He made sure to keep his head down. He was not sure how to act around her so he just tried to be as polite as possible.

The princess looked puzzled as she stared at stallion in front of her. “Who are you? And why are you not resting your head like the rest of Ponyville?” She asked in soft tone of voice.

“Well your Majesty, I am the night watchmen and you see…” He said.

“Night watchmen?” She said stopping him.

“Well yes your Majesty. I was put in charge of watching over Ponyville at night. Ponies fill safer went I am out at night.” He replied.

“Went do you rest then?” She asked.

He raised his head from the ground, and looked at her. “Well I just sleep through the day mostly.” He answered a bit nervous.

“Hmm I see.” She said turning around looking back up at the stars. He wondered what he should do next. He shook his head a bit. As he looked at her.

“So….what are you doing out here your Majesty?” He asked calmly.

“Just...looking at the stars. I find that it helps me relax went I find a quiet spot, and just watch the stars.” She replied to him in soft tone.

He slowly, and carefully walked up behind her, and sat down looking up at the beautiful array of stars above them. “Well you pick a good spot. This is best spot for star gazing. I love watching the stars. This is beautiful night.” He said to her just smiling up as he looked at the stars. Staring gazing was one of his favorite hobbies.

She listen to his words, and glared over at him with yet another puzzled look. This time he spotted her look. He gulped a bit. “Umm did I say something wrong your Majesty?” He asked

“No, it just you are quite the odd stallion.” She said in plain tone of voice.

He didn’t know if he should take that as compliment or not. He just chuckled a bit at what she said. She looked at him again raising an eyebrow.

“Did I say something funny?” She said.

“Nah, it just a lot of people say that went they see me. But, you said it so calmly.” He said shaking off his giggles.

“Well odd not bad thing. I like odd.” She said smiling.

He rubbed the back of his head with his right hoof. He almost forgot he was with a princess of the realm. He was not very good with mares but, talking to her felt a bit difference for some reason. He had no idea what it was.

The two just sat there in silent watching the stars not really saying anything. Time seem to quickly pass both of them as they watched the sky. Luna looked over at the strange little pony. She knew she had to leave soon because the moon would be going down in an hour or two.

“Would you mind telling me your name?” She asked him calmly.

“Ooo dear. I am so sorry your majesty. I must seem so ill-mannered. I am Brightshine.” He replied to her

“Well Brightshine, would you mind if we….Umm did this again tomorrow night. I was nice watching the stars with someone for a change.” She said to him.

The stallion was a bit shocked by her words. A princess asking to see him again. He could not really speak because he thought he was dreaming. “Umm sure your majesty.” He replied
“Just call me Luna from now on ok?” She said to him with smile.

“A…alright.” He stated.

“I have to go now but, I will be here tomorrow night. Goodbye Brightshine.” She said as he lifted up off the ground flying off into the sky. He stood their shocked at what had happen.

The sun was peeking over the horizon and this was the end of the first of many nights to come.
