//-------------------------------------------------------// Even in Darkness There is Light -by ShuTheExiledWolf- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Prologue //-------------------------------------------------------// Prologue When I was born, the doctor told my parents that I would never be able to receive a cutie mark. With high hopes my parents believed that one day I would get one, ignoring the doctor's warning. For a few years it seemed to be going ok. That was until I was around 10 years old. By now it was natural for fillies to get their cutie mark around 5-10 years of age.  No matter what i did nothing appeared on my flank. I cried almost every single day asking my mom and dad desperately, “Will I ever get my cutie mark?” "In due time." they said, seeing a glint of their tears as they said it. I never understood that day why they were crying along with me. I believed those words, keeping my spirits high that I will get mine one day.  Eight more years have passed and it meant I was 18, and to no avail no cutie mark still.  A cutie mark is what makes you special they say, but did this mean I was not special? One day I finally confronted my parents again asking them "Mom... Dad... Am i special to you?" I waited desperately for their answer. "You are my dear... but there is something we must tell you." I backed away slowly hoping it was not something grim. "What is it?" tears started falling down their faces like the rain outside. "You won't ever be able to get your cutie mark,” my mother replied, “ever since you were born the doctor told us you would not be able to get one. We disagreed and believed that you would eventually get one, but I'm so sorry dear..." It was as if a sharp pain had punctured my heart from the words coming from my mother. Never? "I-I will never get one?" my mother and father couldn't stop the tears flowing down their faces like a river.  The words hurt but I didn't let those get the best of me. I slowly trotted to my parents putting a hoof on each one. "It's okay mother and father. I understand it is painful... but i want you to know... no matter what... I will get one even if I have to travel the edge of Equestria I promise you... because I believed in you both in telling me that I am special and someday I will return to you with a cutie mark of my own." The next day I started packing things for the journey ahead. "You don't have to do this my daughter..." I looked at my mother and gave her a comforting hug. "Do not worry mother... I am doing what i must.... just remember that no matter where I go I will always be in your heart and that I am always special!" I replied with a smile.  I said my farewells to my parents as I slowly left the little town I lived in.  Everyone either laughed at me and made little jokes because I was the only blank flank in town... and of 18 years of age if that didn’t make it any worse... but I've gotten used to it and really don't mind seeing as I was never going to come back to see any of their sorry faces.  But what if this quest I was going on did nothing?  Does that mean I'm really not special?  Will I die without ever acquiring my mark.... but I kept my parents words true... because I was special to them, I was their daughter...  I take my first step out into the world and from there on I begin my journey. Oh by the way my name's Destiny... I really never thought of if before but I always felt I was special for something... but what?  Maybe I wasn't special at all... and who knows... maybe it’s true I will never be able to get a cutie mark.  I couldn't help thinking of what's to come as I took one last glance at my town and ventured into the open land of Equestria. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1: The Journey Begins //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1: The Journey Begins I have never been outside of my town before.  I was surprised it was full of life and nature.  In fact it was probably my fault for never wanting to go outside in the first place.  Just to be made fun of due to the fact I never got my mark.  Not to mention my father is a Pegasus and my mother is a Unicorn, but sadly I was born an Earth Pony…  Was I just unlucky that I was not blessed with a pair of wings or the gift of magic?  It made me think why I was not given such a gift.  Earth Ponies are usually treated like trash and value hard work.  I tried to think of something else so my mood would not sink as I take the first few steps of my journey. I stopped at a nearby steam to rest for the time being.  It seemed I’ve walked quite a few miles.  I wonder when I will reach the next town… It seems I’ve been walking forever… I was thirsty as well, so I decided to take a drink from the stream.  It didn’t help I was surprised by a few fish that splashed me with water causing me to fall in.  Great now I’m all wet… The water was freezing cold, which made my body shiver and left my mane soaked.  I decided to continue onward hoping that no one saw that embarrassing moment. It was getting late and the sun was setting fast I was nowhere near civilization.  I decided to trot faster and make do with the remaining light that was left of the day.  The night set in and sun had vanished beneath the vast night.  No town still, just this dirt path and the wilderness.  I decided to set up camp near the same stream.  Starting a fire was a bit tougher for me since I didn’t have magic, but I was able to get one started at least to keep me warm.  I took out my old Tales of Equestria book and decided to read a few stories before calling it a night; I was bookworm I admit...  I loved the tale of The Mare in the Moon.  It was just I began to question myself, did Princess Luna actually want to become Nightmare Moon?  Did Celestia really want to banish her?  It must’ve been lonely spending those 1000 years on the moon.  Maybe Luna never wanted to become Nightmare Moon. Maybe she just wanted to be understood and acknowledge for her doings… I looked up into the moon and its radiant light it cast among the night.  Princess Luna please watch over me and keep me safe this night.  I slowly closed my eyes and I drifted off into a deep slumber. “Good morning! Thank you for blessing me with this glorious day Princess Celestia!” I woke up the next morning full of energy.  As usually I gave my thanks to the Princesses.  I took an apple from my saddle and began munching on it as I continued to trot down the same dirt road I had the day before.  I got to be near a town soon.  With great luck I saw a road sign just ahead.  As I neared closer, it was written Ponyville next 2 miles where anypony should be welcomed!  I jumped with glee, at last a town I can actually finally meet other ponies! But wait I hope they don’t mind me being a blank flank… The thought of it made me lose all that excitement I had a moment ago and I continued onwards. As I was nearing the town I was really shocked at the sight I saw.  There’s a castle in this puny town!?  That totally caught me of guard, but then again this was the first time I had traveled outside into the world.  The town was so full of life though, everywhere I looked ponies were smiling, singing songs, and having fun.  Why couldn’t I have that joy back where I lived?  If you didn’t have a cutie mark, you were nothing… A slight tear dropped from my eye and I wiped it away quickly.  I needed info about this town; I looked around to see if there was an information building of some sort.  Aha! There! I entered the information building see what I could find out.  “H-Hello,” I said nervously. “Well hi there! Ya new here?” replied the middle-aged Earth Pony. “Yes, I was wondering what you could tell me about Ponyville” “Well it’s a fine place to live! In fact Princess Twilight and her friends run the castle here you see.” “Wait another princess?” “Don’t tell me you don’t know Princess Twilight!” I was lost for words… there was a lot I didn’t know about the outside world. “Why she and her friends themselves are the Elements of Harmony but they are busy on an errand so they won’t be back for a while.” “Thank you for the info… Goodbye.” “Stay safe.” Still I could not believe my ears, there was another princess other than Celestia and Luna?  I really felt like an idiot.  I decided to explore the town a little maybe pick up a few spots on the map that seemed amusing.  Sweetest apples in town, visit us at Sweet Apple Acres. I made my first stop there only to see a young Earth Pony working the apple orchard all by herself.  She looked a bit older than me and but I have to admit that ribbon looked adorable on her red mane.  She stopped her work and looked at me.  Wow she’s such a hard worker her cutie mark is adorable too an apple blossom. “Hi there ya new here?” she asked with a cheerful voice. “Indeed I am… My name’s Destiny, I hear you have the sweetest apples in town and was curious to try one.” “We sure do! Name’s Applebloom by the way nice t’ meet ya!” she replied back as she tossed me an apple. “Dig in!” Before I sank my teeth in that luscious delicious looking apple, I took a few bits and gave them to her. “What are these for?  Ya don’t have to pay me unless I take these to the market.” “I insist you do… after all you worked so hard to harvest the apples it would be wrong not to pay you for your troubles… plus it would be rude of me.”  I was only being polite.  She refused the offer and put the bits back in my saddlebag. “No worries it’s on the house now just take a bite will ya?” I gave into the temptation and finally sunk my teeth in that apple.  It was like I was in heaven… the taste filled my taste buds with sensation.  I had never tasted something so sweet before.  I regained my senses as I was lost due to the amazing taste. “I reckon ya like it?” I blushed a bit for being lost in ecstasy from an apple. “Yes its delicious, thank you Applebloom.” She chuckled a bit. “Well I best be getting back to work, nice meeting ya!” and she went back to bucking her trees harvesting her apples.  Well I came here for the apples and wow so much flavor… but I’m just a little sad she didn’t want my bits… Actually I don’t have many so I better watch what I spend.  I headed back towards Ponyville when something caught my attention. “Leave me alone!” “What’s a Changeling like you doing here huh?” I rushed to the source only to see a type of pony I have never seen before being bullied by three other stallions. “We don’t want you here get out!” “I have the right to be here…” the Changeling claimed.  One of the stallions pushed her to the ground. “All ponies hate your kind!” They began to stomp on her, I acted upon instinct and ran towards her and tackled the stallion who appeared to be the leader. “Hey you’ll regret that!” “Leave her alone...” I said quite furious by their actions. “What’s a blank flank gonna do about it?” That just made me blow a fuse, I furiously tackled him to the ground and began punching him right in the face with my hooves. “Geez this mare’s crazy I’m out of here!” The other two ran off after seeing my rage upon their leader. “Ok alright we won’t bother her again! I promise!” Blood started to run down his nose I slowly got off of him and gave him one last kick to the face. “Get out of my sight and don’t you dare call me that ever…” The pathetic leader limped away, I checked to see if the other mare who was supposed to be a Changeling was ok. “You alright?”  She slowly got up trying to recover. “I-I’m grateful for you helping me…” she replied. “Nopony deserves to be treated like that…” I tried to comfort her, “do you have a place where you live I can escort you there if you’d like.” “I do and I would be a little safer with you.” She said shyly.  The Changeling led the way to her home and I slowly followed.  The town residents started giving me looks of hate and mistrust.  Great… and here the cycle repeats itself… I ignored those glare they gave me, I only did what I felt was right.  “Here we are!” It wasn’t a big home but it was near the outskirts of town I guess she didn’t want to get bullied like she did earlier.  I slowly entered the house, so that we could talk in peace.  She seems like a nice pony… Why do others hate her? Well I’m about to find out. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 The Kind Changeling //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 The Kind Changeling “You’re really something different… I’ve never seen a type of pony like you before.” She was what else could I say?  She was a pitch black color with green eyes and a deep blue mane.  I couldn’t even see her pupils maybe she didn’t have any at all!  There were holes on her fore hooves as well which was particularly odd and she had fangs rather than regular teeth. “You’ve never seen a Changeling before?” She seemed shocked. “Perhaps you have not heard of Queen Chrysalis?  About a couple of years ago she tried to invade Canterlot to take over Equestria.  Had she succeeded I would hope for the worst.” “So is that why ponies hate your kind?” I asked dumbly. Well what did I know.  I knew nothing! “Yes it is the reason why the ponies hold a grudge on us… I did not support her plan and want to put it behind me all, but no matter what it seems the ponies will not let that go.” “That’s terrible! That doesn’t give them the right to bully you.” “The fact that I am a Changeling does not help that…” “But… it doesn’t matter to me if you’re a Changeling, you seem very kind and in your eyes I can see it.” “It doesn’t matter! Who would want to become friends with a Changeling besides other Changelings!?” Her voice turned calm into a voice of hatred.  I slowly trotted to her and gave her a comforting hug. “I would… I don’t want a world where people have to get bullied for things that happened in the past.  All my life… I was teased and bullied because I have no cutie mark and now I’m 18 and I still don’t have it… You’re not alone…”  I suddenly heard her sobbing and felt her tears run down my shoulder.  “It’s ok, let it out…” “T-Thank you! I don’t think anypony thinks we Changelings have feelings as well. By the way my name’s Crystal.” “I’m Destiny nice to meet you Crystal.” It turns out she would be my first friend in this lonely world.  I actually liked the company of her.  She was shy but at least always kind.  I would be the one protecting her as we strolled through the town of Ponyville.  No one dare neared us but it soon became an issue that we needed a way to earn income.  At that moment I re-thought of the idea that Earth Ponies valued hard work… Oh well. Though I didn’t like the idea, I somehow managed to get a job for both Crystal and I in the bakery.  Crystal got to wash all the dishes plus she was ok with it because she didn’t want to be seen.  I got stuck with the baking and the selling.  Hey this isn’t too bad… but I definitely don’t want my cutie mark to be bread… After work Crystal and I walked back towards the house but it was strange… I saw smoke from that direction.  “Oh NO!” Crystal darted towards her home and I chased after her.  It was too late though... the house was burning and its crimson flames burned in my eyes.  I rushed into the house set ablaze seeing as if I can salvage my belongings two things I wanted most… the picture of my parents and my book of The Tales of Equestria. I saw my saddlebags but they were caught ablaze from the fire, I desperately stomped on the flames not caring that I would get burned in doing so.  When the flames were extinguished from my saddlebags I threw them on my back and headed towards the entrance just as the roof was about to collapse on top of me.  “Destiny are you ok?” I coughed a bit due to the smoke but regained my conscious. “Yes I’m fine… sorry if I was being selfish… I only salvaged things of mine…” “It alright I didn’t have many things of value, I’m just glad you’re safe.”  For turns for the worst I looked to see if my belongings were all undamaged.  I first pulled the picture of my parents; sadly just a crack in the glass but the photo seemed ok.  Next my book… but as I pulled it out several pages had been burned off… Damn them! Damn them all to hell Celestia! I had completely lost it, first Crystal’s home was set on fire and now my most precious item was damaged.  It was totally unreadable.  Tears did not come out of my eyes.  It was pure anger, and I had never felt such hatred before. “Crystal… Let’s go… It’s clear that we are not wanted here…”  This town sickens me… We trotted away from the house that had once been our home and set out away from that cursed place.  “Why must it be like this?” “Do you understand now the hatred between the two races?” “I don’t care, what gives them the right to do such an act of hatred.”  It was getting late again.  The moon and stars soon blanketed the sky I didn’t want to make a fire that night, after what happened earlier today.  Crystal didn’t like the idea either.  We gazed up into the stars and looked at their gleaming lights.  Oh dear Luna… why is it that those cannot respect one another? And forgive my language earlier Celestia…  Crystal fell asleep not too long ago, and since we didn’t build a fire we had to keep warm.  I snuggled next to her and covered us with my blanket. I promise you Crystal… no matter what I will let no one hurt you and one day we will gain respect from ponies all around. And I too slowly drifted away into a deep sleep. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 The Journey Continues… //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 The Journey Continues… Destiny… I have heard your plea and I will answer it… Huh? Who are you? It is I… Princess Luna! Wait… this is a dream is it not? Listen to what I have to say for my time is short. I envy you that you are trying so hard to be noticed and change the perspective of the other ponies.  But I must warn you do not let hate consume you… As it has to me for hate is thy natural enemy of thyself… Farewell Destiny… Wait don’t go! “Destiny what’s wrong wake up!” It was Crystal who was shaking me vigorously. “Sounded like you had a nightmare, I was worried.” “Well more like a vision or message that Princess Luna was trying to tell me. Something about not letting hate consume me.” “Wasn’t it Princess Luna’s hate that turned her into Nightmare Moon?” I was surprised that she actually knew this. “Yes… how did you know?” “I actually like reading about the history of Equestria, but really we should get moving we have a big day ahead of us!”  I agreed with her we packed up what was left of our belongings and headed on the road venturing the open land of Equestria, again.  I heard Crystal’s stomach growl, meaning she was hungry.  I actually was too, but I had to throw out the burned apples that were in my bag and well we were left to rely on the wilderness for food. “Be careful when looking for fruit if you don’t know what it is come get me first.” “I’ll be sure to check with you first Destiny I wouldn’t want to get a stomachache.” Just be careful Crystal. Well then again I don’t know much about survival either. Besides food, water, fire, and shelter. I began to see if I could forage for berries or any type of fruit or some type of food.  “Hey Destiny come here!” I stopped my search and trotted towards Crystal’s voice.  I was surprised that it was a peach tree!  I liked apples a bit more but then again my stomach would accept anything at the moment.  Crystal used her wings to fly up and pick the fruit off the tree and we stocked up on peaches and had 1-2 to sate our hunger. We continued on after we ate the delicious peaches.  “So tell me more about your kind and your queen.” I was really curious about Changelings. “Well we Changelings are all born from the Queen from eggs.” Huh!? “Wait Changelings are born from eggs?” “Why are you so surprised why else would we be called the Swarm?  Anyways Changelings are both male and female, and when the former queen dies on special occasions a new female Changeling will rise to become the new Queen of the Hive.  Though the attitude of Changelings is extreme loyalty to the queen and our current queen’s policy is we take what we want.” “She seems more of a tyrant than a leader.” “Watch your tongue!  I may not agree with her but the queen loves us all equally!” Wow I never seen her so riled up before. “She is no tyrant; she is a loving queen by heart. If you dare despise her name I will be sure to cut out your tongue!” I jumped back after hearing such words. “Calm down Crystal. I didn’t mean anything like that!” “Sorry… It’s just everyone despises the queen, and actually to tell you the truth she sent me here to see if she can amend for what she had done. We Changelings only want peace with the other ponies, but we are still seen as hostile.” “Stop right there Changeling thief and blank flank!” A sudden voice blurted out behind us.  We slowly turned around to see deep velvet colored female unicorn with a bright blonde mane with a fierce expression. “Give back the peaches you stole and I won’t harm you.” “And if we don’t?” I replied with annoyance for calling me a blank flank. “Look out!” Crystal pushed me out of the way and she let out a scream of pain.  I looked to see what had happen and saw these small like sharp spikes pierce the side of her body. Needles!? “No Crystal!” I quickly pried the needles that had pierced her. “She’s poisoned… Only I have the antidote, and you shall be the next to die!” Her horn glowed with intense magic.  I quickly dragged Crystal out of the battle area and confronted the unicorn once more.  Hang on Crystal... “You shall pay for what you have done!” “Then prepare yourself!” She used her magic to propel her needles towards me.  They were so hard to see, but I managed to get out of the way in time.  “Not bad, but you won’t escape this time!”  She barraged me with more needles I kept trying to use trees for cover as I ran through the forest.  It became quiet, so I looked out from behind the tree to see if she was still there.  She’s gone where did she- It was too late to realize but I had been stabbed by her horn.  Teleportation....  I fell to the ground with blood slowly dripping down my body. “You know that an Earth Pony can’t beat a Unicorn.” “So what…” She teleported back into the opening where the wounded Crystal laid helpless on the ground. “She’s poisoned… but I guess it’s her time to go.”  She used her magic to summon a storm of needles.  No! I ran with all my strength ignoring the pain. “Goodbye Changeling scum!” Luna give me strength… Did… did I make it? With luck I had managed to get atop of Crystal’s body.  I was covered with needles, but at least Crystal’s body was left unharmed other than being poisoned.  I was like a, what were those creatures called… a porcupine… “We’ll that’s fine with me… you can die together.” I could already feel the poison enter my body at a rapid pace.  It made me lose my strength and my vision started to blur…  I collapsed on top of Crystal, only to see the Unicorn open up my saddlebags and take the peaches that we were accused of stealing.  Why… Am I so useless? //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 An Encounter with Fate //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 An Encounter with Fate So this is where my journey ends… I didn’t expect it end like this… Well, at least made a friend before it all ended. This is not where your journey ends little one… You still have a destiny to fulfill! Huh? Princess Luna? I regained consciousness which I had thought would never have happened… I’m alive still, wait a second where’s Crystal? “Look at that, your awake.” I turned my body towards the doorway to see a gray Pegasus with an oddly multicolor mane.  His mane was separated by two colors, half of it was white the other half was black. “What did you do to Crystal?” I asked angrily trying to get out of the bed but miserably fell to the hard floor. “Whoa easy, the Changeling girl’s alright.” He rushed towards me. “Her body had less poison in it than yours and your body is still recovering.” “How do I know I can trust you?” “Heh sure are a feisty one towards the one who gave you the antidote of that dreadful venom of Velvet Bane.” “Wait, Velvet Bane? You mean the mare that poisoned us?” Who is this Velvet Bane? “Yes, that mare who attacked you was a bounty hunter. I have no idea what she was trying to obtain, but I noticed by the needles it was surely her doing.” “Ugh I rather not talk about it…” Just to get peaches? At that moment the Pegasus who claimed to be named Fate heard my stomach growl.  Just how long have I been out? “I figured you would be hungry for being out for 3 days…” He had to help lift my weakened body back onto the bed.  Well I guess I didn’t mind that, but I had to be spoon fed due to my condition.  It was like being treated like a kid… “Hey you need to eat something to regain your strength.” I really didn’t like the idea of being spoon fed but my stomach fell into the temptation. “Destiny! You’re awake!” It was Crystal; I was relieved to see she was doing well. “You been out for quite a while I was quite worried.” “I’m recovering slowly thanks to Fate, and I’m glad to see you walking.” “Excuse me to interrupt this reunion,” Fate blurted out randomly, “there is actually something I want to talk about with you.” “What is it?” I asked wondering where he was getting at. “I believe that you two are the ones I have seen in my visions, a prophecy i should say.” “A prophecy?” What’s up with this Pegasus now he’s going on about prophecies! “Listen to me!” His voice tone changed suddenly. “It was destined that one day I would come across two wanderers who were unique. A Changeling and an Earth Pony who did not acquire her cutie mark. There’s more… Throughout our journey we will encounter 3 more ponies who will accompany us.” “Wait you mean you’re coming with us?” He’s starting to get on my nerves… “It is fate!” He yelled stomping one hoof into the floor. “I lived my life up until this moment, the prophecy will be fulfilled.” “If what you say is true, I accept your offer.” I replied, I didn’t know what it was but I felt something truly odd about Fate.  When his presence was near me it felt as if some sort of aura surrounded him.  It truly was an odd feeling I couldn’t explain it well.  Before we could continue our journey, I needed to recover.  The venom surely took a toll on my body making me lose most my strength, let alone the ability to stand up properly.  Fate and Crystal agreed that it was a good idea I got some more rest and left me in peace.  Prophecy? I don’t understand, it’s true I ventured out here to see if there was a chance to get my cutie mark but now I must fulfill a prophecy? I was too frustrated trying to process what I heard from Fate’s speech. I slowly felt my energy drift away and I fell asleep. I awoke the next morning, but the effects of the venom were still in effect.  I could stand, but I would have to walk slowly…  My body felt numb still but I didn’t want to delay any longer.  Crystal and Fate gave a face of worry as they saw me struggling to walk a few steps.  I was going to fall down again…  Fate swiftly came to my aid and caught me with one of his wings before I hit the ground. “You sure it’s ok for you to be stumbling around like that?” “I’m fine I may be weak at the moment but I’m not useless!” He was really concerned for me though. “Never said you were…” he quickly lifted me up with his wing so I was on his back.  It made me blush a bit plus it was embarrassing. “Hehe how cute!” Crystal giggled. “Well let’s go Crystal.”  Oh great how embarrassing, now Crystal probably thinks I have a thing for this stallion… He was right though, I would just be slowing us down with me falling all over the place.  I didn’t like the fact I was on this Pegasus’s back, but I guess life isn’t always fair.  “Any clue on to where we are headed Destiny was it?” Hehe… oops… “Well…” I started, “not really.” He let out a sigh. Yeah I’m an idiot I admit. “Actually now that I think of it where did you plan to go from the start Destiny?” It was Crystal who became confused on my intents. “This is actually my first time venturing out into Equestria, I have never left my town before. What makes it worse is I’m 18 and I have no cutie mark. Long story short, I have only little experience from the books I have read and I have no knowledge about the outside world.” “I suggest we go to Canterlot first then, but I’m a little concerned about her.” Fate pointed to Crystal.  That’s right…  Canterlot was where Queen Chrysalis and her Swarm tried to overthrow Princess Celestia and Princess Luna.  I’m sure everyone there will show hostility towards Crystal. “It would be wise I just sit outside the city and await your return,” she suggested, “don’t want to attract unneeded attention.” “Sounds like a plan! To Canterlot.” “Says the one who can’t walk,” Fate teased.  I just rolled my eyes and ignored the comment.  Canterlot is still quite some distance away; Fate suggested we set up camp so we could regain the strength we would need for tomorrow.  Maybe I could finally walk again too.  It was to our luck that Fate provided provisions so we wouldn’t starve to death; surprisingly he was a good cook too.  Crystal fell asleep next to the warm fire that we kindled.  I stared into its crimson flames remember that day of what could have been my new home. Fate caught the expression I was giving the fire.  “Fire… What does it remind you of?” I took my gaze off the fire and he saw the cold look I gave him. “It reminds me of how cruel the world can be and that a gift given to us can be misused…” I replied coldly. “What you say is true, but deep inside I feel a deep hatred toward all pony kind within you.” His response made me even more suspicious of him. “What do you know that I don’t?” “It’s a good thing we finally get to talk alone. The truth is I know a lot more than you know. I know things such as your fate and your future.” “You’re mad! You are no prophet and how am I entangled in your prophecy?” He suddenly stood up and walked towards me. “You are right to have your concerns about me but know this, you may be destined to bring great changes upon this land but are you willing to risk your life for it?” “Risk my life!? It’s true I may want to bring change among this land but you’re saying I will die doing so?” I have never seen another pony’s rage greater than mine.  His face neared mine and for a moment I was frozen by terror. “It already has been foretold you cannot change your fate.” “How do you know?” “Because fate is a cruel thing… now get some rest. If we get up early we should arrive near Canterlot by sundown tomorrow.”  My fate has been sealed… So this quest really is for nothing… I will die before I even get my cutie mark… Actually, I don’t even care about that now.  What’s up with this Pegasus could he speak the truth? //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 5 A Unicorn’s Remorse //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 5 A Unicorn’s Remorse I didn’t get much sleep that night.  I thought long and hard about what Fate said to me.  In fact I wasn’t in such a good mood.  The numbness left my body and it seemed I was able to walk normally again.  As Fate suggested we left early so that we could make it to Canterlot by the end of the day if we were lucky.  I wonder what Canterlot will be like.  Maybe I will get a chance to meet one of the Princesses. “I see you’re up and walking again, I was worried I would have to carry you again.” I flicked my tail into his face. “Indeed, let’s go.” We continued to follow the road which we assumed would lead us straight to Canterlot.  I have heard many tales of the city but I was actually going to see it with my own eyes and for the first time!  Though I wondered what the ponies there would be like. “Canterlot is one of those cities where many wealthy ponies and aristocrats live.  They don’t take too kindly to commoners I guess you could say,” Fate explained. Ugh great, I’m a commoner I guess. “Yeah but we won’t be there for long maybe get a map and some more supplies at least for the journey ahead.” “Do you think the Princesses will be there when we visit?” I asked desperately. “I doubt it, they usually have other duties to attend to and it’s usually really rare to have an audience with them. It’s common sense why would the Princesses need an audience with a commoner?” Wow! You didn’t have to say it like that you jerk! “Fate does make a good point Destiny,” said Crystal, “but don’t worry I’m sure one day you will get a chance to meet them.” I sighed knowing that they were right and I have no cutie mark.  “Hey what’s that?” I looked up to see what looked to be a Unicorn who was collecting herbs.  Something was peculiar about the Unicorn; her eyes were covered in bandages.  “You think we should confront her?” Crystal asked in a worried tone. “She’s blind…” Fate stated. “What she’s blind!?” I exclaimed in surprise. “Why else would her eyes be bandaged?” The fact that she was blind it didn’t seem like she was discouraged by it.  She was humming and gracefully picking her herbs with her Unicorn magic.  She was beautiful with her sky blue coat and ivory colored mane.  We walked towards her in no means to frighten her.  She heard the clopping of our steps and became alert looking in our direction.  She showed her teeth and growled at us like some wild beast. “Stop where you are, what is your business here?” The mysterious Unicorn asked. “We mean you no harm,” I replied, “we are simply passing by on our way to Canterlot.” “Canterlot… That place is so cursed… Get out!” “Why do you hate Canterlot?” she didn’t reply with a bright flash she’d vanished.  I felt a sharp pain near my chest and noticed that I had been impaled, yet again by a horn of a Unicorn.  Celestia be damned why am I always getting stabbed by Unicorns!? It was harsh because she was blind but I pushed her with such force with my hooves to get her horn out of my chest.  Deep crimson blood streamed down from my wound I had just received.  I fell to a kneeling position. “I just missed your heart, I’ll make sure to not make the same mistake.” What have I gotten myself into? This Unicorn surely possesses a lot of hate just like me… “Let me handle this…” Fate stepped in front of me.  Crystal came to support me so I could stand properly.  “You have great potential, and I admire you for that but hurting innocent ponies I cannot allow.” “How would you understand the pain I have experienced?” “You have not accepted your fate! I must teach you the error of your ways.”  She teleported again vanishing from Fate’s sight, but he did not panic.  He remained calm and mysterious as he always did.  His eyes were shut like he was concentrating where she would appear.  His eyes suddenly open and he took flight and got a good punch right into the Unicorn’s gut.  It all happened so fast.  The blind Unicorn fell to the ground unconscious from the swift blow from Fate.  “Tie her up; we can’t have her causing any more trouble.” “What do you plan to do with her?” I asked curiously. “Take her with us, and talk some sense into her,” he replied as he slipped some sort of paper charm on her horn. “What’s that Fate?” Crystal questioned. “It’s a magic seal. It will prevent her in using magic to escape let alone try to harm us.  Enough questions we’ve wasted enough time and it looks like we won’t be able to reach Canterlot tonight.” I let out a big sigh.  Half of it is probably my fault in wanting to confront her. Why am I so useless? “Let’s get you bandaged up Destiny.  That wound could’ve been fatal given if she aimed a bit more to the left.”  He took some bandages that we had packed before in my saddlebags and wrapped it around my wound to stop the bleeding. “Will you be able to walk by yourself Destiny?” “Yeah I should be fine thanks Crystal.” We stalled long enough, Fate slowly picked up the unconscious Unicorn and we continued en route to Canterlot. I guess I was wrong, the wound seemed to be more severe than I had thought it to be.  I only slowed us down due to the extreme pain.  Fate insisted that we set up camp for the night, but I argued back that we should press on.  I just didn’t want to be a hindrance to the others.  I have brought nothing but trouble to Fate, to Crystal, and even myself.  My body gave in to the pain and I agreed with Fate that we should rest.  Still, I feel like I’m always a burden. We were supposed to make it to Canterlot by nightfall. This is my entire fault… “Hey, don’t look so sad Destiny.” Fate said trying to calm me. “It’s ok tomorrow we will make it to Canterlot.” “Do you think I’m a burden? Be honest with me.” “I think of no such thing, you can’t always be blaming yourself for everything. You’ve been acting very negative ever since Destiny. Is there something on you mind?” “It seems everywhere I go I bring trouble along with me. Crystal lost her home near Ponyville because of me, we were attacked by a random bounty hunter because it was my idea to scavenge for food, and now we delayed our trip to Canterlot for me wanting to confront the Unicorn.” “Destiny I am grateful that you rescued me that day, and I could care less about the house. What matters is that you are my friend and that no one else has expressed their kindness towards me… They would all run away or spit insults at me knowing that I meant no harm.  To me you are my light in the darkness. You showed to me that day that all is not lost, that there may be a chance for change.” “Agreed, you are no burden to us Destiny. Please do not think that way…” “Thank you the two of you…” I felt at ease knowing that Crystal and Fate supported me.  Crystal especially, it was the first time I ever heard her talk like that.  Light in the darkness… While all the commotion was happening the blind Unicorn regained consciousness and struggled trying to free herself.  Her hooves were bound and her horn was sealed from using any form of magic, she wasn’t going anywhere.  “Release me!” She sure had a lot of fight left in her. “Relax, we just want to talk.” Fate reassured. “You say talk but why are my hooves bonded with rope and why can’t I use my magic?” “Simple, so you cannot hurt those around you who are innocent. You nearly killed one of my friends and I can see that there is something you are hiding. Are you going to talk or no?” “Why should I…” It was clear she did not want to talk nor be friendly.  She was rendered helpless.  I decided to step in and see if I could talk some sense into her. “We mean you no harm, but I can see you have a strong hatred for other ponies. You and I are more alike than you know.” I was trying to soother her so she would talk nicely. “How so?” “Ever since I was little I was never able to get my cutie mark, to this day I am 18 and I still do not have it. I was diagnosed with a strange case where I would never be able to obtain one. It’s the sad truth and at times I believed that I was not special. All the other ponies laughed at me or put me down.  I started to hate other ponies, and when I left and arrived at Ponyville I believed that things would be different. But I was wrong; I saw a group of colts bullying a type of pony I had never seen. It was a Changeling and I acted upon instinct and left one of those colts with blood dripping down his face. It made me angry that such ponies could do such a thing. I have never ventured out in the land of Equestria before but even now I know to see that there is much hate in this world. I want to rid that hate and change this land so that everypony can be treated equally. I am not your enemy and I do not blame you for attacking me, you must have your reasons and I have mine.” “Sadly I am surprised that you didn’t kill me…” “Why in the name of Equestria would we kill you?” Crystal asked “I tried to kill you, and I would be more than happy to leave this world than live in it.” “Don’t say such things!” I spat back at her. “Killing you would mean nothing to us it would just make us look evil, like I said before we are not your enemy.” “Just end it now. Please… I do not wish to live any longer...” “I don’t want to… You have done nothing wrong, you were only defending yourself. Any other pony would have done the same.” “You lie! You pity me because I am blind! I do not need your pity.” “That’s enough Aria!” Fate yelled out. Aria? “How… How do you know my name when I had not told you?” she seemed surprised. “It was fate that we would meet, but you should listen to Destiny. She forgives you for attacking her yet you still want her to take your life. Now I am uncertain if I should take off the bindings and the seal so you don’t do something foolish…” “Aria is it? Hear me out… Tell me your story; I want to know why you are feeling this way. Maybe you would feel better at least telling someone then keeping in all this time.”  She stood silent for a while.  Then she seemed to muster up the courage to finally speak. “I’m from Canterlot,” she started, “Ever since I was a filly I was blind. My eyes were covered in bandages ever since i was young. It was a nightmare for me especially for living in Canterlot. Ponies in Canterlot are too worried about their bits and style. My parents ran a clinic in Canterlot, the ponies there were always rude to them and saying that the lower class did not belong there. I felt I was most hurt, I mean I was blind. I had no friends, I was picked on for not having the ability to see. I thought of taking off the bandages one day to see if it would help, but even so it didn’t change anything... Then one tragic day my mother caught an illness unknown to my father. He desperately tried to get some medicine but the ponies there were stubborn and we did not have the bits to pay for it. We couldn’t do anything, and mother passed away that same day. Father decided we were going to move out of town after my mother’s death. In this forest isolated from others. In a way I was happy to be out of there. Sadly my father caught the same illness that my mother had and there was nothing I could do. He passed away but he told me this. Aria… Become the best medical pony in the world no matter what so others do not have to suffer the same as your mother and I have… And so far I kept my word…  I always blamed the ponies of Canterlot for the death of my parents. What can cause ponies not to help others in dire need?” I could see her bandages get moist, knowing that she was crying. I walk towards her and gave her a comforting hug. “Aria… I’m sorry to hear that. You’re not alone though, we are your friends.” “Y-you mean it?” “Of course! Welcome to the herd!” Crystal said cheerfully. “Fate was it? Could you untie me and remove this seal… I want to do something for Destiny…” Fate decided to unbind her. She stretched her body to loosen up from being tied up.  Suddenly her horn started to glow she was about to use her magic.  Although it seemed the light was somehow serene.  I felt a tingle in my chest where my injury was. Somehow it was being mended and shortly after there was no more hole in my chest.  Although the pain still remained.  “I healed the wound, and forgive me. The pain might still be there, mending doesn’t relieve the pain but at least you won’t bleed.” “Thank you Aria. I’d say we should get some rest, we have a big day ahead of us.” We decided to put out the fire and get some rest for the night. Aria… I promise you, I will help you become the best medical pony there is. I don’t want anyone to suffer… I swear it on my life, I won’t let anything happen to my friends. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 6 The Oracles of Time and Fate’s Purpose //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 6 The Oracles of Time and Fate’s Purpose A new day greets us as we awaken from our slumber. Celestia and Luna thank you for keeping us safe on our journey.  Aria suggested we go to her cabin in the woods.  She claimed to have supplies that might prove valuable for the journey ahead.  Medical supplies I assumed, she was really gifted with her healing magic I was a bit curious how she was able to manage.  Not to be mean or anything but she was blind.  So how could she read, know what herbs she’s picking, let alone know where things are around her?  I didn’t mean to be rude but I just had to ask. “Hey Aria, I was wondering… How is it you are so experienced in your magic and medicine?” “My father taught me all he knew, even though we were… Low class didn’t mean we were experienced in potions and treatments. As for my sight, well there are other ways to sense things around me such as scent and sound. I guess you can say that those two senses I’ve adapted to for survival…” “I didn’t mean anything offensive if you felt that way, I’m sorry.” “It’s quite alright, come I’ll lead the way to my cabin.” Damn I feel like I just offended her… Maybe I should keep my mouth shut for the rest of the way.  If it’s other than my actions getting me in trouble it’s my mouth… She really didn’t seem to care about her condition.  Aria was always showing a smile, but in a way it seemed like a fake smile.  Something was still troubling her but what? The desire to know was killing me.   I didn’t want to ask her in front of Fate and Crystal, I had to wait. “We’re here, give me a second while I get some stuff and then we can continue to Canterlot.” She rushed inside and swiftly packed various supplies.  I was right; most of it was medical supplies.  I also caught a glimpse of a few books that contained spells and information about medicine.  “All packed! Forgive me for the delay.” “Not at all,” Fate sounded grateful that we stopped. “It’s actually a good thing we stopped; it’s always good to have somepony with the knowledge of medicine. In fact I think it’s better we have a medic in general. “ “I don’t want anyone to suffer… I want to be the best medical pony in Equestria, and I feel like traveling with you three will help me accomplish my goal. Yet I need to atone for harming you Destiny. It feels like no matter what I do I can never forget I tried to take your life let alone accept your forgiveness…” “It’s all in the past Aria, you are our friend now. Besides you’re not the only one who’s impaled me with their horn…” Even though I said that, she heavily regrets it still. “Fate is right though we’re glad we have somepony with your skill and knowledge.  Come now to Canterlot we go.” We traveled quite some distance in order to reach Canterlot.  Three long days, this should’ve been a day and a half’s travel.  We were stalled due to my injuries, as well as the encounter of Aria.  The name Velvet Bane was stuck in my mind.  If it wasn’t for Fate that day, my life would’ve ended a miserable death alongside with Crystal who was my only friend at the time.  I had a feeling that it wouldn’t be the last time I would see her again and if by some chance we were to meet again, would I be ready?  The bigger question at hoof, do I have the will to take another pony’s life? “Hey look we made it!” Crystal pointed to a city which seemed to have been built on the side of a mountain.  I snapped out of my daze and looked at the marvelous city known as Canterlot. “So this is Canterlot… This is where the royal princesses live.” It was such a sight to behold; it was much larger than Ponyville that’s for sure. “Indeed it is Destiny, but remember we are only here for supplies.  A map at least, it’s sad that I don’t actually own one…” I giggled at him. “Then how did you know the direction to Canterlot?” Crystal asked. “Lucky guess…” he replied.  Aria remained silent, if she didn’t want to be anywhere near here.  I could understand that after the talk about her past.  We neared the large gate but we stopped a bit far away from it. “It won’t be safe for me to enter… Even if I change my form of that of a different pony, I would still be caught. After the queen’s siege on Canterlot, security has been increased as well as ways to detect Changelings who try to infiltrate. I’ll wait here for your return.” I didn’t want to leave Crystal behind, but I suppose it’s for the best.  It was clear to me that ponies in Equestria were extremely hostile to her kind. “I’ll stay here as well. I’ll keep her company so she doesn’t feel all alone…” Aria offered. I understood why as well.  Aria did not feel welcomed in Canterlot nor did she want to be reminded of painful memories. “Be sure to stay hidden Crystal, we’ll be back as quick as possible.” Fate and I continued to the gates.  I saw guards stationed there, many guards.  Crystal’s words were true; we approached the wall of guards blocking the entrance. “Halt! State your business.” The guard said pointing his spear in our direction. “We are travelers just stopping to buy some supplies.” Fate replied. “Hmmm… you look familiar.” The guard glared at Fate. “You must be mistaking me for somepony else…” “Hmmm… let them in!” “Thank you.” I said kindly to the guard.  Fate began to pick up his pace.  He gave a face of worry, I noticed it right away.  Something was clearly wrong. “He really looked familiar…” “Bah it’s just your eyes, you’re getting too old.” The guards were talking about Fate. “Fate, what’s wrong?” I whispered. “We must move quickly, I fear the worst.” What’s going on? I’ve never seen him this way before.  We were cruising through Canterlot at a fast pace.  Ponies were giving us dirty looks, simply because we were commoners.  Well, I was in this case.  Fate’s depiction of Canterlot was accurate.  All the ponies who lived in this great city were either wealthy or high class.  We finally reached our destination a book store.  It was like I was in paradise!  I loved books with a passion and to be surrounded by this many… “Let’s find that book of maps Destiny.” I let go of my ecstasy and decided to focus on the task at hand.  We split up looking for this so called book titled Maps of Equestria.  I didn’t find that book but something else caught my eye.  The Tales of Equestria: The Elements of Harmony… Includes the tales of Princess Cadence and Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends. WHAAAT!? I… I so need this book… It was a treasure before my very eyes.  I began to let out joyful squees, but not only that I was really curious about these two new princesses I never heard of before.  “Hey I found it Destiny! Uh… Destiny?” Fate saw me drooling over what I had just found.  He gave himself a facehoof. “I-I’m sorry…” I said feeling very embarrassed. “If you really wanted it, all you had to do was ask…” I let out a loud squee of happiness that it probably was heard throughout the whole store. “Let’s hurry back.” I nodded and agreed, I was just so happy that I would get my hooves on that book.  After what happened to my old edition…   We walked towards the cashier and complete our purchase. “300 bits please.” Fate shuffled out his bits to pay the cashier, but there was something else that really caught my attention.  Two posters on the wall behind the cashier pony. Wanted Dead or Alive: Name: Fate Specific Physical Traits: Gray Coat, Black-White Mane, Cutie Mark of an Oracle of Time Crime: Desecrating the ancient laws of the Oracles of Time and Heresy Reward: 10,000 bits dead, 100,000 bits alive The Oracles of Time thank you for cooperating and bringing this traitor to justice. Wanted Dead or Alive: Name: Unknown Specific Physical Traits: White Coat, Red Mane, No Cutie Mark Crime: Domestic Violence in Ponyville, Assisting a Changeling, and Murder Reward: 2500 bits dead, 5000 bits alive If you see this mare, be extremely cautious.  She may look like a commoner but she is extremely violent. Reports say she is responsible for assisting a Changeling and the murder of a resident in Ponyville. It is a known fact she has a strong hate for other ponies. Not good!  We have bounties on our heads! And murder? I’ve done no such thing! Sure I saved Crystal but I did not murder that stallion…  What is wrong with this world we live in… and who are the Oracles of Time?  Fate finished paying the cashier he shoved the books in my saddlebags and then whispered in my ear. “Run…” It was clear that Fate must’ve notice the posters as well.  We were now racing towards the gates when all of a sudden. “There’s the traitor! Try to cut him off!”  We were being pursued by a group of ponies who all had the same cutie mark as Fate. “Don’t dare look back Destiny; run as if your life depended on it!” “Guards block the entrance!” We were trapped, royal guards on one side and a group of ponies who I assumed were Oracles of Time on the other.  “Your trapped traitor, submit to your crimes and you’ll find your life will be much better in the afterlife.” “I knew they looked familiar!” It was the guard from before. “Fellow Oracles… Is it such a crime to help change one's fate?” Fate asked. “It is forbidden you know that! We are not to interfere with history itself.” “You wish to look upon others suffering?” Fate scoffed, “How many years how many countless lives have been lost? How long must we watch? All my life I’ve been granted many visions and all my life I was taught to never interfere. The Oracles of Time are corrupt! Watching ponies suffer, how would I not agree to make a change? The Oracles claim they are the keepers of history, I say they are the harbingers of doom! No more will I watch others in need suffer terrible fates! No more shall I live by your immoral laws! We were granted a gift given to no others only to see the misfortunes of the future.  I don’t care if you call it heresy or not, I will not let the world become darker than it should be.  The answer is within this one and I will forever protect her and stay loyal to her ‘til the bitter end…” “Enough of this nonsense! Seize them! Capture Fate and take him back to the Orthodoxy the mare you can do whatever you please.” The guards and Oracles began to close in on us. “Fate… What do we do?” I asked trembling.  At that moment a bright flash emitted the area. “Where did this blinding light come from?” An Oracle randomly shouted out. “Huh where did they go?” A guard asked dumbly as the light dimmed. “Celestia be damned… Find them immediately!” What just happened?  “Hey, it’s a good thing I got to you two just in time.” It was Aria. “I teleported you two out of there while your captors were blinded.” I was relieved that we were still alive.  I gave her a hug, happy to know that we got out of there. “Thank you Aria… you saved us!  I’m happy to have a friend like you.” Aria smiled back at me.  I turned to Fate, it was now I understood what had been troubling him this whole time. “Fate…” “Let’s get out of here… We’ll talk when we reach a safer location.” “Okay…”  I looked back at Canterlot and now I knew that wherever I go I am no longer safe… We were criminals with bounties on our heads.  I still don’t understand I did not murder anypony.  Severely injure yes, but murder?  I sighed, but what I wanted to get a better understanding of the organization known as the Oracles of Time.  I knew Fate was always suspicious.  Receiving visions of the future, and I’m the answer to ending the darkness in this world?  None of it made sense… his words echoed in my head, “I will forever protect her and stay loyal to her ‘til the bitter end…” “Destiny! Hello! Are you ok?” Crystal noticed my confused look. “No… I just learned that Fate and I are wanted criminals.” “What?!” Aria gasped, “Criminals for what?” “Fate is wanted for heresy, and I’m wanted for domestic violence, assisting a Changeling, and murder…” “You didn’t murder anypony though!” Crystal reassured me. “I know… but why? What makes a pony claim such things against others who believe in what they believe is right?” “Like I told you before, the world is dark and corrupt.” Fate replied, “Equestria has changed over the past few years.  Everything used to be peaceful and everypony treated equal and everypony lived in harmony. Then such ideas of friendship and harmony proposed new thoughts within Equestria.  Hate, greed, betrayal, pity, pride…  It was these thoughts that brought chaos to Equestria.  You could say the four princesses of Equestria are all busy trying to suppress these ideas.  Still it’s not enough…” “There is another thing I must ask Fate how am I all tied to this?” “One day I was granted a vision of a mare that was said to have brought change and restore Equestria to its prior state. Though she was special indeed, she would not be able to obtain her cutie mark. Despite that, she started to notice the hatred throughout the land and sought to rid of it.  On her journey she would encounter five unique others to accompany her on this quest to purge the widespread hatred.  But when the world is purged of this darkness she too will perish… All would not be lost… For it was her unity of all pony races that will save Equestria…” “It… doesn’t make sense to me Fate…” “You are that mare; you have more power than you actually think Destiny…” “I’m an earth pony… I’m not special at all.” “In time you will learn to accept that you will be the savior of Equestria… It has already been foretold.” “What are the Oracles of Time, what are they truly?” I asked still confused. “I guess it’s time I tell you everything. The Oracles of Time are granted visions of the future and we record that as history. I was one of those Oracles. My mother and father were also Oracles. When I was just a little colt I would receive visions and nothing would make sense. All oracles have the same cutie mark, a ying-yang. When I grew older I received visions that were full of death. It clouded the way I thought and as a law I was not allowed to interfere let alone change history itself. I disagreed with the other Oracles; I did not want to watch this world be plunged into eternal darkness. I had to disobey.  To tell you the truth I never wanted to be an Oracle in the first place… That was until I was given the vision of you.  I did not want to see you suffer and die a life where you felt that you didn’t belong. I wanted to help you, travel to the ends of Equestria with you, help you find your destiny, save Equestria, and maybe one day hope to see you obtain your cutie mark...” “It’s as the heavens have blessed us with a guardian angel.” Aria said. “I never knew you had such a responsibility Fate.” Crystal added. I stood silent; it’s true I wanted to rid hate from this world.  I wanted to find my destiny and attain my cutie mark, I want everyone one to be treated equally and live in harmony.  Yet again, I could not comprehend how I was all linked to this… How can I, an earth pony, change the perspective of millions of ponies?  What is this latent power within me that Fate speaks of?  Can I really save this world?  There were just too many questions shuffling inside my brain that I tired myself out and decided to rest hoping it would ease my mind for all that had happened on this day.
