A long, long time ago, a well-meaning mistake doomed much of the world to fade away. Harmony, as envisioned by the naive ponies of Equestria, meant that there could be no chance of violence or war, no chance of chaotic, dangerous and deadly weather, and no chance of wild animals acting unpredictably.

A long time ago, Discord tried to fix it by creating a few centuries of Chaos, and to relieve his boredom.

Months after Princess Twilight Sparkle and the Elements of Harmony received the Friendship Rainbow Kingdom Castle, three mares and a griffon meet on a lonely road. Each of them had no place in Equestria and the Harmony that ruled the land, and each had narrowly avoided being destroyed.

One of them convinced the others of an artefact that could let them make a place for themselves, away from Harmony. None of them really believed it would be real.

So what would they do…

…if it was?

It was all falling apart. Who would have thought those two brats would go this far? Not him, that's for certain! And he was the Spirit of Chaos! The caretaker of the natural order and the guy who kept the machinery of nature running smoothly! And these two...idiots! They were trying to do something that would be even more of a disaster than their experiments with the Windigoes!

Honestly, Discord mused while shaking his head as it formed out of the ether, who changes a portion of a species that empathically shares the emotions they feed on to only feed on hate and anger? A species that releases excess energy as cold and ice? At least the Changelings had a reason to want to only feed on love energy. That? That was stupid and now the ponies and their cousins were going to do something really stupid.

"Welp, we can't have that now, can we?" He asked rhetorically before with a snap of his fingers and a cloud of soap bubbles he appeared in front of the gates of the kingdom where the new alicorns were residing. Another snap and the gates were now a pile of fried bacon. Grabbing a strip and chewing on it thoughtfully, Discord calmly floated towards the palace, "Now how am I supposed to deal with all this Order messing up all my lovely Chaos?" Swallowing the bacon, the chaos spirit conjured a bottle of chocolate milk, looked up at the neat, perfectly sculpted clouds, and then back down at the milk.

He smiled, "Well, what's the point of having phenomenal cosmic power if you can't use it? A couple of centuries of pure madness and chaos should balance out the damage done." Nodding in satisfaction at his plan, Discord snapped his fingers and vanished in a cloud of laughing gas that quickly spread and soon ponies were laughing uncontrollably in the streets.

What could go wrong?

"And it was such a good plan too." Discord muttered to himself inside his prison of rock. Well, technically it was a magically-induced igneous material but it was close enough to rock that he could make the comparison.

"A couple of centuries of chaos and mayhem, the Everfree goes wild and reintroduces some actual nature back into the world. And all the ponies eventually become stronger for it. But no, those two twits sabotaged everything with their 'Harmony' and now...now it's all gone."

It had started small, like it always does. The Windigoes vanished first, and then small islands in remote waters, followed by hidden tribes and lost cities, building and growing until no-one could deny the fact that the world was literally fading away and the seas were becoming devoid of life. Not that the ponies noticed of course, but he noticed and stuck inside rock he could only watch as with every drop of chaos being drained by Harmony, the world quietly faded into a white, featureless void and he couldn't do a thing to stop it.

Discord seethed in his prison. Ooooh, when he got out, he was going to give those princesses such a pinch!

At least nothing else could go wrong.
