Mystery Box woke up with his cutie mark. Most colts would be thrilled, but not him, he didn't even notice because when he woke up, he was in prison. His parents were outside the grim walls, crying, presumably because their foal was in prison, but when they saw him stir, they looked at him accusingly.
Suddenly, before they could say anything, a gray mare with a dark brown mane and a magnifying glass cutie mark stepped into the cell from the side.
"Okay, miss. What is your name?" asked the mare.
"My name is..." Box started, half way through realizing that his voice wasn't his own. "What the... What's with my voice?!"
"What do you mean, miss?" asked the mare.
"This isn't my voice, this isn't happening. And stop calling me miss! My name is Mystery Box, and I'm not a filly!" he said standing up, quickly realizing that he was taller than he should be. "What? Why am I tall now? Mom what's happening to me?" He asked, looking to his mother.
"Don't you dare say my son's name, don't ever say his name. what did you do to him, where is he?" Replied his mother, with obvious malice.
"Why can't I say my own name? Mom... Dad... Why are you looking at me like that? It's me, your son. Mystery Box!" He yelled, crying now. "I don't understand what's happening! Please help me. Mommy, I'm scared." He curled himself as small as possible sobbing. He cried through the night, until he fell asleep
The next morning, he awoke in a normal sized body, still in the cell, but back to normal, mostly. Looking to his left he saw that his coat had changed to green. He looked through the bars to his right and saw his parents, sleeping. Deciding to wake them, he opened his mouth, and found he couldn't speak. Trying again, he found that his mouth worked perfectly, but his voice wouldn't come out. Thinking that it was odd, he was about to try again, but at that moment the mirror behind him opened, and the mare from the previous day walked in. She looked in his direction, and stopped, completely shocked to find the colt sitting their. She sat down, attempting to gather her composure. After some time she asked "What happened to the mare that was in here?"
Motioning to himself, he made a rarely used motion, using his hoof to mock writing. The mare took a second to understand, knocked on the mirror and asked for some writing utensils and paper. When they arrived, the mare passed them over to Box.
that mare yesterday was me, this is the second time I've changed. the first was from being me to that mare. i am their son he said, motioning to his sleeping parents, a sad and scared look in his eyes
"Okay... let's say I believe that. How did this happen?" she asked
I don't know, all I know is that this is the second time this happened, and I don't think it'll stop. he suddenly stopped, tears welling in his eyes, the realization that he may keep changing forms for the rest of his life, he would lose his friends, he couldn't go outside without being new every day, re-meeting people to keep his secret... his life was over, taken over by the personas he would take.
"My name is Night Sky, by the way. I don't know what's happening, but I know you're telling the truth. It's my special talent, seeing the little details." she said with a smile, moving in to hug the crying colt. "I promise that I will help you, in any way I can."
the colt proceeded to cry into the mare's chest, waiting for the end.
