Sonata Buys a Freaking Car
It was the middle of June on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. The sun was blazing hot, forcing everyone to stay inside their air conditioned homes to escape the unforgiving heat. Inside their own apartment Aria Blaze was lounging on the couch flipping through the channels on the small TV set they owned bored out of her mind, while Adagio Dazzle was seated in an arm chair reading a book titled “How to Get People to like You”. A large fan was seated in between the two of them on the floor, oscillating around the room providing cool fresh air. Just as Aria flipped past what must have been the millionth channel they heard a screeching sound from outside their apartment, followed by the sound of a car horn blaring from the parking lot below.
“What the hay was that?” Aria asked, turning off the TV and turning to face the window.
“No idea.” Adagio replied, still reading her book. “Probably some moron nearly crashing his car from paying too much attention to his reflection then the road.”
The sound of the door opening turned their attention behind them as Sonata Dusk bounced into the living room overwhelmed with excitement.
“GUYS GUYS!!!!” Sonata screamed with glee “Guess what iiiiiiiiiiii’ve got?”
“An annoying personality?” Adagio guessed
“No silly” Sonata replied ignoring her jibe. “Even better, I bought a FREAKING CAR!!!!”
Adagio and Aria did a double take. “Wait, say that again?” Arai said “I must have wax in my ears because I thought you just said you bought a car?”
“That’s what I said” Sonata cried happily bouncing in place on the tips of her toes.
“Like as in a REAL car or a TOY car?” Aria asked skeptically.
“Of course it’s a real car, didn't you hear me pull up and honk the horn just a few seconds ago?” Sonata said laughing.
“WHAT????” Adagio shouted, jumping to her feet and walked furiously over to Sonata. “AND JUST HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU PAY FOR IT?” she asked jabbing an accusing finger at her.
“Only about five thousand, it’s an oldie but goodie I found at a used car lot.” Sonata said shrugging.
“FIVE THOUSAND???????????” Adagio screamed at her. “AND JUST WHERE DID YOU GET THIS FIVE THOUSAND THAT NEITHER OF US HAVE FROM?????”
“Um…our savings account….and something called insurance…” Sonata replied nervously backing away from Adagio, who was becoming a brighter shade of red every second.
“You mean to tell me that you just spent ALL OF OUR MONEY and ALL OF OUR INSURANCE SAVINGS that we need to keep this house and pay for medical expenses ON A
FREAKING USED CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“YOU BEETLE BRAIN WE NEEDED THAT MONEY!!!!!!” Aria joined in, throwing her remote at Sonata.
Adagio stepped back and placed her hands on her head. Then she glared at Sonata before continuing. “You are going to return that car and get back our money RIGHT NOW!” she screamed.
“Bu…But I just got it. Can’t I at least keep it for a few days, or maybe find some other way to pay back the money?” Sonata asked meekly from the wall she had backed up against.
“NO, we need that money, ALL OF IT, before tomorrow or will we lose this apartment.” Adagio said sternly. “We already have been late with the rent once before thanks to your stupidity, and we can’t afford to let it happen again.”
Sonata sighed miserably “OK fine, I’ll go return it”
“You’d better” Adagio said “And from now on the only way you are buying anything is with mine or Aria’s approval until you learn to not spend so much money so stupidly!”
“Like that will ever happen” Aria said under her breath.
Sonata turned to leave, but just as she reached the door she turned back to the other two with pleading eyes. “Do you at least want to see the car before I return it?” she asked.
Aria and Adagio gave each other a weary look. “Oh all right” Adagio said following her out with Aria “But you are STILL returning it afterward.”
The three of them walked out to the parking lot, following Sonata she led them to a bright red Mustang convertible with yellow flames on the sides, four seats, two doors, and a coating that made it sparkle in the glimmering afternoon sun.
“Isn’t it sweet?” Sonata asked, hoping to convince the other two to let her keep it. It’s an old nineteen nighty eight model, but’s it’s been re-built to be more like a modern Mustang. It’s even got a brand new engine that can get up to eighty miles in hour in under ten seconds flat.”
“That is pretty sweet” Aria said, glancing inside the car. “Hey it’s even got custom stereo speakers built in the doors.”
“And inside the trunk as well for tailgating parties” Sonata added smiling at Aria as she opened the trunk to examine it further.
“Wow that’s so cool” Aria said, her mouth dropping open in amazement. Closing the trunk Aria returned to the seat’s and peered at the back. “Hey is that a built in drink cooler?” she asked pointing toward the black box with ice cubes in it jutting out from between the two front seats.
“Yep, salvaged from an old limo” Sonata replied.
“Wicked” Aria replied reaching into the cooler and grabbing a Coke.
“Yes this is all really swell” Adagio interrupted from behind them, but we still have to return it and get our money back.
“Can’t we at least take it for a spin around the block before returning it?” Aria asked, giving Adagio her best puppy pound eyes.
“Please, please, please, please, pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!” Sonata joined in tugging at Adagio’s arm.
“Ugh FINE” Adagio shouted, pulling her arm from Sonatas grasp. “But only ONE pass around the block, and then we return it!”
The three of them piled into the car, Sonata and Aria in the front while Adagio took up the rear. Sonata turned the ignition key on and the engine roared to life. They backed out of the parking lot and speed into the almost empty street in front of their apartment. As they drove Aria began playing around with the stereo, changing the station constantly and turning the volume up as loud as possible. Adagio glared at them from the back wondering how children like Sonata where allowed to buys cars or get a Driver’s License. Then a thought stuck her.
“Hey Sonata, when did you get a Driver’s License anyway?” she asked.
“Oh I don’t have one of those” Sonata replied gleefully.
“WHAT?????” screamed? “You can’t drive a car without a Driver’s License, that’s illegal!
“Yea, and?” Sonata replied “Were a group of demons from another detention, why should we care about some silly stupid laws?
“Becaaaaaaaaaause we don’t have our power’s anymore AND I for one really do not want to go to jail.” Adagio responded. “You have to pull over now, what are you going to say if you get stopped by a cop and he asks for your Driver’s License?
“Oh I don’t know, how about Fuck You Asshole!!!” Sonata retorted amusingly, causing Aria to burst out laughing beside her.
“And after he handcuff’s us and throws us behind bars?” Adagio asked.
“Oh calm down Adagi.” Aria responded. “Let’s just return the car before anyone becomes the wiser.
However just then the sound of sirens blared behind them as a cop car suddenly started chasing them down the road.
“Me and my BIIIIIG mouth” Adagio said putting her head in her hands again.
“What did I do?” Sonata asked suddenly becoming scared.
“Oh I don’t know maybe you should have stopped at any of the five stop sign’s you just ran past.” Arai retorted.
Sonata pulled over, and they watched in horror as the cop pulled up behind them, got out of the car, and started walking toward them.
“What do we do, what do we do, what do we do???” Sonata cried, losing all confidence she had just a few seconds ago.
“Let me do all the talking” Aria said powering the window’s down.
The cop walked up to their car, and leaned in toward the driver’s window at Sonata. “Young lady, do you realize you just ran five stop sign’s?” he asked accusingly.
“She didn't mean too, her brakes failed briefly and she couldn't stop” Aria responded hoping the cop would believe her.
“She stopped fine just now” the cop said sternly.
“Yea the problem comes and goes.” Aria tried desperately. We’re actually on our way to a repair show to get it fixed. We promise it won’t happen again.
She smiled nervously as the three of them waited with bated breath to see if the cop would buy their story and leave.
“Can I see your Driver’s License and Registration please?” the cop said turning to Sonata.
“Fuck” Adagio swore under her breath.
“My what now?” Sonata asked nervously.
“Your Driver’s License and Registration” the cop repeated. “Do you have it?”
Sonata turned to look at Aria, but she just shrugged nervously back in response. Thinking quickly Sonata turned back to the cop and said the only thing that came to mind.
“Fuck you Asshole”.
