The heart.
I could sense a pony touch it. Though many countless years had passed since it had been cast I the spell had not faded. Yet despite the centuries of banishment I had endured I still clearly felt the warning that some foolish pony had managed to find the chamber in which the heart was held and activate the final of many trapes I had laid to prevent its capture. Perhaps the anti-aging spell I had used to preserve the kingdom and its inhabitants for my return had also persevered the many enchantments I had cast on my castle. Or less powerful spell simply lasted longer then more powerful spell like the one that was used to banish me.
Luckily it seemed that the pony despite the adept magical ability it must have still was idiotic enough to activate the trap I had placed to stop anypony who may be foolish enough to attempt to attain the crystal heart. The magic amplifier takes advantage to the harmonic magic that the crystal ponies natural sheds into the atmosphere when happy and uses this power to create a powerful magic field. The indestructible magic amplifier’s design is ingenious and its shape has ever since its creation been used as a sign of powerful love. Other than the sun monarch herself, it was the only thing I knew that had even the smallest chance of defeating me.
But who could have reached it? Only a pony skilled at the forbidden art of dark magic could have passed the trials I had myself made in hopes of allowing myself and only myself access to the crystal heart.
I expanded my magic to the tower in which the crystal heart was held in an attempt to see who had gotten so close to stealing my crystal heart. Who would dare to steal from me! Me King Sombra! My magic skillfully detected the shape of the intruders. It was that accursed dragon and his master! How dare they take the heart, as if they had the right to look upon it! Once I regain possession of this kingdom I will make that pony ender an eternal nightmare for what she has done. I will leave her in the dungeon as she lives a false reality, one of filled with their worst fears. She will never wake up from it. I smiled at the thought of her torment. And that dragon will pay to, oh will I enjoy having a dragon as a pet. I will cast the imprisonment spell and which as he kill those I ask him to. Oh how he will fight it, cry, beg me to kill him. Beg me to release him from a world that he didn’t even have the chose to die. I will laugh at him from on top my throne as the other vermin ponies feed me.
Oh how I have missed eating! When you experience imprisonment for a thousand years all alone you start to ache for the little thing in life. You know mares, food, mares, cloths, mares, and the inspiration stairs. I really miss my inspiration stairs. I cannot wait to talk to them again.
I look up from my thoughts to see the force field that had previously shielded the empire crumble to shards and came to the conclusion that whatever pony had been holding the shielding spell had finally ran out of power.
Took them long enough. Finally the empire was finally mine! And look all my glorious crystal slaves packed together as if that could stop me from liberating them of the responsibly of free will once more. Soon they will bow before me, for at my hooves is where they belong.
“Hey up here, I got the crystal heart!”
Wait what? Was that… NO IT WAS THAT PURPLE DRAGON! HE HAS THE CRYSTAL, HE WILL PAY DEARLY FOR THIS, I WILL RIP HIS SCALES OFF HIS BODY AND USE THEM TO MAKE A HAT!
"THAT IS MINE!"
I rushed toward the castle determined to take my property from that foolish dragon before he could actually use its powers. This may be my downfall. The thought was scary. Why was it that I must endure the curse of a thousand years of imprisonment? Unable to move, unable to see, or hear, taste, feel, smell, left to my thoughts unable to tell if I would ever be free of this torture preparing myself for revenge, only to fail. To die. Was this my legacy? The great King Sombra, master of the dark arts, son of Grogar the necromancer, rightful ruler of the crystal empire, to fall because of the actions of a dragon. A baby dragon still without wings? A mere slave to another. An underling.
Why have I endured so much only to die so… quickly. Disgracefully. No this will not be my end!
I propelled myself from the ground toward the falling crystal, ready to take it before the drake. I was going to get it. I was going to get it before the drake!
With that victorious thought I prepared myself to receive the crystal… only to be intercepted by a pink blur. I turned to see what it was unable to believe what had happened. I finally saw what it was. A ridiculous looking pink alicorn. Oh discord and above there is another one. It turned flying to the crowd as I still tried to figure out what exactly was happing.
The pink alicorn landed with a stomp holding the crystal in her magic, “The crystal heart is returned, use the light and love within you to ensure that King Sombra does not.”
“What?” Even with that word I realized what had happened. The last thing I had thought possible was for me to lose once more. And I lost within the period of a day. Humiliating would be one way to call this failure. And with that I was filled with fear. I wasn’t meant to die! I was meant to rule, I was meant for great things. I WAS MEANT FOR MORE THEN HISTORY BOOKS!
“No! No! STOP!"
The empire light up as the underlings started to power the amplifier. I refuse to die! What should I do? I can’t escape in time. I have never been able to teleport more than half a mile and after doing so I would be left in a dangerously weakened state. Light started to expand coming toward me at a fast rate as I raced to think of a solution to my predicament. My eyes widen as I remembered a spell which I had learned long ago before my rise. In a book of forbidden magic gifted to me by my father and his before him. A spell that even I would regret doing as it would be irreversible. But it is my only option.
My horn glowed as I cast the spell. My body glowed as a white light torn me to smithereens afflicting unconceivable pain to myself. My vision flickered as I vision started to jump in-between my previous body and my new host.
I saw my body from the eyes of another as it exploded into a thousand pieces and not a moment latter I lost conscious.
“Twilight!"
“Twilight wake up!"
Where was I? I couldn’t remember. The light yes the light. It was so pure, the energy. Why do I remember seeing myself from the eyes of another… THE SPELL! By discord what have I been forced to do? I switched bodies with another… Whoever had previously habituated this body was most likely dead now. This spell was never performed before but if it had worked correctly it would mean the old owner of this body would have been destroyed along with my old body.
The magic was unstable and experimental though, there is no clue what side effects may occur with myself being in the body of another. Hopefully this new body is proficient at magic or I may be in a bad situation.
“TWILIGHT!”
I heard sobbing.
Perhaps Twilight was the name of my new body. Twilight was a feminine name though for a stallion… oh no.
My eyes opened instantly as my eyes adjusted to the bright light. I was lying on a bed in a clean looking crystal room. I moved up the blanket covering my new purple body as I prayed to whatever being greater to myself that it was still there.
It wasn’t. I let out an uncanny scream unfit for a king, a master of the dark arts, before I felt the darkness once more possessed my body.
I awoke to the sound of snoring to my side and I let my magic expand. It spread across the room and an image of it started to form in my head. I was in some library of sort… the dragon was here. It took every bit of my self-discipline to not kill him where he slept, I was in a new body and I would not reveal my location just yet. Why is that dragon of all thing here though? I do not feel his master anywhere near here. I felt life around me and I realized I was inside a tree.
This is a bad place to contain all these books I thought as I felt the many square objects around the room. What if a fire were to start? I checked for any enchantments but found near none but a simple fire prevention enchantment surrounding the tree. That is odd do ponies no longer care for the protection of information? I was used to this many books being guarded by many enchantments, and watched over by multiple guards. Perhaps the owner was sure that they themselves would be able to protect them from those who would attempt to steal or destroy the precious information.
But still why is the drake here… perhaps I have taken the body of his master. It would make sense that a unicorn powerful enough to pass through the many obstacles I had laid would own such a large amount of literature.
There seemed to be no dangerous other than the dragon so I slowly opened my eyes in an attempt to gain a baring of my location. The room was made of wood so I assumed my prediction that I was inside of a tree was correct. I wonder how they were able to hollow out the tree without killing it.
I moved up my head to view the rest of the room. I was… cozy and filled to the brim with books. Oh so many books! What a wonderful amount of information! There was probably not one better place for me to be then here, how else would I be able to catch up with the history that had occurred over my banishment? In my joy I practically jumped out of the bed only to find myself next to a mirror.
I was mare.
The thought hit me hard and I was left speechless once again. At least I wasn’t reduced to an earth pony, or crystal pony. But a mare.
Perhaps a gender spell? There must be some way to fix this!
No… even I at the height of my power was unable to do such an advanced spell. It would be unlikely that this body would be capable of higher magical ability then myself. So was I truly trapped in the body of a female? At least I am alive. That is all that matters.
At least I wasn’t a crystal pony. For that I was thankful.
I looked at my reflection attempting to judge my appearance. My lavender coat certainly seems attractive. And the eyes, no my eyes, complemented the dark purple mane well. It would appear that I was attractive… but who knows what standards a pony’s beauty is measured by in this century.
I was shorter to. I was always tall for a pony but it was odd to see the ground so close. What to do now though… I could wait and strike when it was least expected. I could hide. No I will not hide like a filly afraid of the monsters behind the shadows! I AM KING SOMBRA THOSE WHO APOSE ME WILL HIDE! All I wanted was the crystal empire… that’s all.
I am a king. And if Equestria won’t let me rule peacefully then I will rule Equestria. And everyone will coward before my name.
“Twilight are you okay?”
I turned with a smile. My eyes glowed as I readied my spell.
“Twilight are you okay? Twilight why are your eyes glowing like that? Twi-“
“All questions will be answered in time young one. Just relax.”
The room light with the dark light of my magic as the drake let out a blood churning scream. I just watched him scream, pound the ground and begging for release from the never ending agony. For mercy he would never have.
I just smiled, “Tell me everything.”
