Equestria was once a peaceful land, with lush valleys, fertile soil, and long summers. The inhabitants enjoyed the fresh air, and children went to school, regardless of their financial situations. The land was ruled by two sisters, Princess Celestia, and Princess Luna. They governed their country well, and it overflowed with good harvests and excellent trade. This went on for many years, with very few emergencies. But that all changed when the bombing started.

The day had been dreary even before it began, rain slashing against the windows and cars. Pedestrians struggled to find their way home, or to their last errand. Then, off in the distance, the sirens sounded. The ships came, and they carried nuclear bombs. Nobody knew who owned them, but they obviously meant harm. They panicked and fled, but many did not make it. Those who did went into hiding, fearing another attack, or worse invasion. For months they spent their time like this, huddled in their cupboards. Then they opened the doors, and saw hell. Burning cars and houses, crumbling offices and towers, and pieces of the past, all destroyed. Then the outbreak began.

The radiation, accompanied by a specially made toxin, had filled the air around them. The best possible outcome was death, your body eaten away until only skeletal remains could be seen, or you died of radiation poisoning. The worst possible outcome, was infection. The radiation and toxin affected the blood of victims, and caused changes and mutations. After days, or even weeks, your brain would start to rot in places, resulting in almost complete intelligence loss. Then your skin would rot, producing an odor most foul. Finally, you would succumb. These are known as infected, or undead. They couldn't be easily killed, unless shot to the head, severely damaging what was left of the brain. Severing the head was also ideal. The cases of this epidemic were thousands, millions, and it struck fear in everybody's hearts. It was a fate worse than death, and all who became infected were to be quarantined before being exterminated.

One year after the beginning of the end, the Equestrian Defense Against the Undead, or EDAU, was formed. At first it was a small militia group, gathering members through offering hope. Then it became an army, eventually being run by Princess Celestia herself. It was now the most powerful armed force in Equestria, and outposts were scattered throughout the lands. But they had competitors. Gangs were formed in abandoned towns, offering money, protection and eventually the chance to govern the land. They rose to power, becoming more influential by the month. Scavengers and thieves were the majority of recruits, but eventually a family or two would join, scared for their lives.

But the damage to the land was irreparable. Homes were destroyed, lives were lost, and violence broke out like a rash. But some choose a different path altogether: the path of traveling, being free from obligations, and just surviving. Now, things were taking a turn for the worst, and the will to survive would be put to the test.

Author's Note

This is, obviously, the prologue, so prepare for the real beginning in a bit. I have wanted to write this for ages, and the first version was a rough draft, so I don't know why I posted it. But here is my take on an undead apocalypse in Equestria
