SMASH: A Fallout Equestria Character Back Story
Smash, a Hellhound born to a small pack that had moved from the Splendid valley area to the southern parts of the wastes in hopes of establishing a new den. Things were harsh and resources scarce, it was a "dog eat pony" way of life. So when Smash was born malformed there was discussion of ending his life, but then, they needed as many hunters as they could get. He was a bit different from the other Hellhounds. He was similar to his mother in that he had the appearance of a Golden Retriever, but he was more bulky, a bit more hunched over, and his left paw was clubbed(curled and near useless). He also had shorter claws on his other limbs, and his hind legs were much shorter for his proportions. He was also very slow mentally, he could only speak in a simple form and had trouble grasping many basic concepts such as firing guns. When they tried to teach him he would either use a gun as a club, or throw it at the target. He was however always stronger than other pups his age, and proved highly efficient at stealth. As he grew he proved he could be fierce in combat, rarely losing to others while sparing.
So one day they decided to test him, they outfitted his left paw with a large metal claw, gave him a large club to wield with his right and took him on a hunt. They watched from a high ridge as he approached a small caravan of ponies, they stared in awe of his stalking skill, able to get right next to them without their noticing. Then he pounced, in a matter of moments he had taken all of the ponies down. Very few had the chance to bring a gun to bear, let alone fire a shot, except wildly. As the last one was pinned down begging for his life Smash smiled, sat on his haunches and declared "SMASH WIN!" just as he had always done while sparing, surprised by this the pony looked around and noticed the others starting to get up too, all were bruised, but none looked seriously hurt. He gave Smash a puzzled look but smash just waved a paw at him saying "BYE", licked him on the face, and bounded off back to the slack jawed Hellhounds that were to be his judges. After the "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!!!!" moment that came upon his arrival they found that the caravan had already moved on at full gallop, losing them much needed resources. Later back at the den they brought Smash before the leaders, unable to even get Smash to understand what he did wrong, they decided it was hopeless. Then one of the leaders came up with an idea, to send Smash out into the waste on his own, he would either learn to kill or die. Either way, at least he wouldn't be a drain on their resources. So they ran smash out of the den and into to waste.
Smash out on his own did the first thing that came to his mind, tried to make friends with anything he came across. First there was a bloat sprite, but it bit him, so he ran away. Next was a group of ponies exploring some ruins, but before he could say hi they started shooting at him and he ran away. He began to realize after several more attempts that it was really hard to make friends, he was also starving and needed food. Late at night he approached a camp fire, there was a group of griffons in armor that had made camp, they were roasting a number of bloat sprites they killed and the smell was too much for Smash to pass up. So he waited, snuck in really close, and when they looked off after a noise in the distance he quickly snatched a couple of the bloat sprites from between the griffons and retreated to enjoy his meal. The griffons alarmed and confused as to where the food had gone searched for the thief. But due to Smashes dusty brown fur and the dark where unable to find him as he enjoyed his meal.
Smash found a decent life for himself in the waste as a thief and scavenger. Finding or stealing whatever he needed. On occasion while he slept he might be attacked by some wild beast, or he may stumble into an ambush set by raiders or slavers. Each time he would fight fiercely until either he could run away, or what he fought would run, but surprisingly he never killed anything.
One day while moving through some foothills near a mountain he found a new club, this one was metal, it was quite heavy but easy enough for him to wield. He avoided the mountain, it didn't feel right to him, and moved on. He later came upon a ruined town filled with ponies. They were not very friendly so he stayed hidden. He was able to get a lot of good stuff from these ponies. They had a lot of food and he was able to get some armor that he could wear, at least in pieces that he would strap on and hide under his fur. One night he found himself holed up in what was once a basement of a house that had long since collapsed. In One corner he found a large round metal tube looking thing, it was on wheals but they had broken and rotted. It was dusty, but after playing with it a bit he got it nice and shiny. He found that his left arm fit into it nicely, so he started wearing it as a glove of sorts. He liked that he could kinda see himself in it, it also had shapes on it, a few round circle like things, with squiggly lines coming off them. He began tracing them with one of his claws for a bit till he got tired and went to sleep. Later as he slept he dreamt of a Pink Pony with Poofy hair. He asked her to be friends and she happily agreed. He was happy too and they had a party, he never knew what a party was but the pink pony taught him. It was a lot of fun and he learned the pictures on his metal glove were called balloons, and the pink pony, who called herself, Pinkie had them on her hind quarter as well. The pink pony said that his glove was one of her party cannons and that he could have it, but she made him promise not to hurt anypony with it, she tried to make him "Pinkie promise" but he didn't know what that meant and before she could teach him he woke up.
The next day while scavenging for food Smash saw a young purple filly with a pink and green mane running through town, he watched her run past then watched other ponies chasing after her laughing and yelling. Smash, thinking they were playing a game, wished he could play too but continued at his task, then he heard the pink pony's voice say "Their not playing Smash, they are bad ponies and will hurt her, you should help scare them off." Confused as to where the voice came from he looked around but then heard her say in a more urgent tone, "HURRY!" At which point he latched onto the wall of the alley way he was in, launched himself to the roof, and took off over the roof tops tracking the ponies through the streets. Seeing a chance he leapt down in front or all of them, the young filly running into him and bouncing onto the ground. The two raider ponies came to an abrupt halt as Smash looked at them, Snatched up the dazed filly and let out a blood curdling "RRRROOOAAARRRR!!!!, at which point the raider ponies lost control of their bodily functions and took off.
Smash took off in the opposite direction. The filly, who fainted from the scare, tucked under his arm. He made his way back to the basement he was at the night before. When the filly woke up Smash had food set out ready for her. He smiled at her with a big toothy grin and she screamed. He did what he could to quiet her, but after screaming all she did was cower in a corner and cry saying "Go away go away go away." so, he went away, at least to just outside. After a while he would notice her poke her head out of the debris at which point he would turn and smile, causing her to shriek and duck back inside. This repeated itself for a while till the filly finally spoke saying "uh, hi..." To which smash replied saying "HI" and waving while smiling. "You're not going to EAT me are you Mr.. Monster?" she asked skittishly. Smash replied "HUH?? SMASH NO EAT PONY." He then turned to face her and put his paw to his chest then pointed it to her saying "ME SMASH, YOU?" at first a little startled but quickly understanding the filly replied "I'm Palette, you saved me didn't you?". "YUP," he replied "PINK PONY TELL SMASH SAVE YOU." he said looking proud of himself. At once she dashed from the debris and hugged SMASH as tight as she could saying "thankyouthankyouthankyou" Smash looked down at her and asked "YOU BE SMASH FRIEND?" to which she replied "Oh yes Smash always, thank you so much." Smash then pulled a small chunk of Amethyst from one of his pouches and handed it to her saying, "this like you". After looking at the stone he handed her she said "For me, thank you Smash." and hugged him again.
After that, Smash suggested they have a party like the pink pony had taught him, but not having much around Palette didn't think they could have much of a party there. Besides the bad ponies were still really close by. But she suggested he take her home. Once her mom and dad saw she was safe they would be happy to throw a big party for them. Smash agreed and snuck her out of the town, she helped him find the direction of her home, and he used his sense of smell to help back track her scent. After a couple of days they came upon a small village, now a smoldering mess. Worried she pointed him in the direction of her house. Seeing it still mostly intact she Galloped forward yelling "Mom, Dad, I'm home!!!!" Just then Smash heard the pink pony again, she was scared and yelling "NO, Smash stop her, grab her quick." Smash took off after her in an instant, he was just about to reach her when there was a flash of light and then darkness.
Smash was back in the basement, he looked around confused. Then the pink pony came out of the darkness, she looked sad and her hair not so poofy. "HUH?" was all he say before remembering the filly. "PALETTE?" he asked looking around. The pink pony looked at him sadly and said, "I- I'm sorry Smash your friend is gone, I'm sorry, I- I didn't see it in time. The bad ponies made a trap after they attacked her village. B-but you still did good, you're a good boy Smash, she is with her mom and dad now." Not quite understanding what she really meant he just said "OH OK" and sadly shrugged. Gathering herself she spoke again, "you really did good Smash, you made a friend and you helped her. I'm sure you can help others and make more friends. I'll tell you what, if you do me a few favors I'll lead you to all sorts of places and you can make more friends, does that sound good?" To which Smash happily nodded and smiled widely. The pink pony, her hair back to it's original Poofy self, said "Well good then Smash we have a deal." and offered her hoof to Smash, who grabbed it and pulled her into a big hug. "OOF" she started. "Okay Smash, that works to" she said patting his head. "Now wake up."
Smash Woke up, he was lying on his back, he was quite sore and stiff, some of his fur singed, and he was outside the home of his former friend. She was gone. He looked around then said sadly "Bye Palette" before wandering off in a direction he just knew he had to go.
Smash wandered the waste for some time, helping ponies and other creatures whenever the pink pony said to, he was sometimes thanked, and other times the ponies he helped would run from him, or try to shoot him so he ran from them instead. At night he would sometimes have dreams with the pink pony, she would reassure him, and tell him where to go next. Eventually he found himself in The Maw.
Description:
Dusty brown humanoid Golden Retriever.
Very long fur.
Long muscular arms, short legs, bulky frame, long floppy ears, and a clubbed left paw.
He always smiles if he can.
He hides armor plates under his fur strapped haphazardly about.
On his left arm he wears one of Pinkie Pie's party canons, it's engraved with her cutie mark and was enchanted by twilight to not rust or tarnish(the wheels not so lucky though the axle is still intact).
He wields a sabotaged pink agent megabomb as a club, this bomb had it's payload and warhead removed prior to the attack on canterlot, it bounced off the shield and landed near the foothills, it's literally a metal club.
He tends to travel on 2 legs but will often use his arms to assist his movement for short bursts of speed.
He is very strong, durable, and has a great sense of smell and hearing, though he is dense and spaces out a lot.
He is quite adept in the areas of stealth, Tracking, acrobatics, melee combat, and thrown weapons.
He speaks in a broken language.
He will tend to use the simplest solution to solve a problem.
He collects small stones and gems that he will gladly offer anyone he sees as a friend, picking one he feels best matches them.
His element is actually loyalty, but due to his pact with Pinkie he leans more for laughter now(If that matters).
He doesn't understand death, back in his den he has seen a dead pony be butchered and cooked, but what he ate was "Food" not "Pony".
When he fights he always pulls his punches so he doesn't "hurt" anyone(kill anyone).
Since finding the party canon he has gained a link to the "entity" of Pinkie Pie. They made a pact and he now acts as her agent in the world. She points him in the directions of tasks she wants him to do for her, usually involving search and rescue missions. As a result he gets warnings of immediate danger(2nd hand pinkie sense) and she acts as a conscience(warning him if something he's about to do is wrong) as well as giving him quick advice to do things he wouldn't think to do, like: "Quick Smash, cut that rope to the side there." Causing something to fall on the bad guys.
All he really wants is some friends.
