The stars shone bright that night, and the wind blew her mane about her face. She always loved to look at her beautiful stars, and she always fancied they might be memories that get captured and displayed in the beautiful, dark, clear night sky. Every time she looked at them, waves of memories flooded back to her. As she sat down on the grass, trying to calm herself down, the whistling of the wind made a rhythm almost as if singing to her, a calming, gentle tune.
This was her spot. A single tree stood in the field and the water ran through in a small river just beyond the hill. The soft grass, the occasional singing of crickets, and of course the night wind all combined into a beautiful song, and she strained her ears to listen further. A memory came to her from long ago, before the beast known as Nightmare Moon had consumed her. A tear ran down her face, and as she turned to the sky a shooting star blazed through the night with the brightness of the sun itself, and just as soon as it had arrived it was gone like a dream.
Another memory came to her, one of the night she turned on her beloved sister. A wave of guilt washed over her and a shiver ran up and down her spine. She remembered clearly the events that had occurred and try as she might the memory would not go away.
"Did you really expect me to sit idly by while they all basked in your precious light?!"
She shook her head and took a minute to breathe, a few beads of sweat on her forehead. She dreaded those memories more than anything. The pain and regret that came with them was almost too much to bear. She shifted in place to try and get more comfortable as yet another bright star shot across the heavens almost as if it was a signal. Yet another memory visited her as thunder boomed in the distance. A vision of Twilight Sparkle, winged and smiling, entered her mind and took up every bit of space possible. Luna could never forget the compassion of that lavender mare and she could most certainly not forget how she helped bring her back from that dark, wretched abyss of loneliness. She smiled at just the thought of her but quickly changed her expression lest anyone might be watching.
Night was her time and she made the most of it that she could, and her visits to other's dreams kept her occupied. It was something she both enjoyed and feared, and often she found herself needing to take a break from the activity due to some intense moments. This reminded her not only of her need to keep control of her emotions but to learn her limits, which she had often ignored and was ultimately one of her biggest mistakes.
The wind picked up this time and the smaller branches curled like ancient feathers toward her, and the rustling leaves made one of the most beautiful rhythms she had ever heard. To think such a tune could come from Nature itself was remarkable, let alone hearing it for yourself. She had ventured out many times before but tonight was one of the only nights she simply wanted to lay back and listen. To her the stars were much warmer and friendlier than most ponies, a sad fact but one she didn't mind so much as she could empty herself to them without fear of judgement or ridicule. They were friends, even family to her, and she could always count on them when no one was around.
Yet for all this she still felt something missing. She let loose another tear as loneliness came back and squeezed her like a vice around her sides, and without knowing or caring she let out a small whimper, something she had no intention of doing but at that moment nothing mattered but that she got it under control and silenced, at least for the time being. Her eyes stung in the wind, even though the night itself was rather warm, which caused more tears to drop down and eventually the grass upon which she sat was moist. Frustration surged forth and she moved to a different side of the tree, but not before kicking up a clump of dirt and grass as a display of her troubled state. The thunder continued its quiet boom and the smell of rain hit her nose, bringing the slightest smile to her lips.
That was yet another comforting thought. The water rushing down to greet her mane, her hooves, the cool liquid splashing on her back and all around. The thought that sensations like that could be but a while away caused a second of delighted bliss from the mare but she soon regained her composure. Yet another star passed by. Several distant, faint screams echoed somewhere behind her skull.
"Do not run away!"
Indeed, the memory of that Nightmare Night was still fresh in her mind, and the screams yet reminded her of her mistakes and the consequences, short as they may have been. The wind blew her mane in her face and she jumped in surprise, wrapped up in her thoughts she blew the hair from her mouth and sighed. As beautiful as she found her night, as calming as she found the wind, and as enchanting as she found the stars she couldn't bear to look at any more. But right as she turned away one more star, brighter than all the others, triggered her memories once more. A flash of pink, a kind smile, deep, glassy eyes, and a soothing voice. A star. As her final tear fell, her smile came back ten fold and she threw herself on the grass, rolling around and filling the air with the sound of laughter. Never before had she felt like this and she was both terrified and elated, she didn't know why but she didn't care. For whatever reason she had in her mind, everything finally felt somewhat alright. She spread her deep blue wings apart and took off soaring into the sky,
She rose higher and higher, right until she felt the atmosphere thin out and with one swift motion she dove back down, her eyes closed in concentration. In her flight she swirled, rose, fell again, dancing among the stars as a line of light followed her close behind. A steep dive, followed by a quick turn to rise back up and curve. Small flashes appeared here and there, and she turned and headed back down only to swoop back up again, and as she danced she laughed at just how wonderful she felt, the wind hitting her ear creating a majestic symphony that sent a rush through her body. Not once did she stop as she continued her aerobatic display, swirling, twisting, diving and circling into a pattern she did not know, and perhaps she was not meant to know but as she flew she recognized some details here and there. The air seemed alive now, shivers ran up and down her spine and her dance reached a halt only for a split second before turning around to make another line. Without her eyes open she could focus on the mental image more clearly, the night now becoming warmer. It could have been hours or mere minutes since she had started her dance but at last, she was finished. She floated gently back down to the ground with a sigh, the grass under her hooves feeling foreign for a moment.
The sun was starting to rise now, and as she readied herself for the fly back to Canterlot she took one last look back at the pattern she herself had created and could call her own, her memory to keep and protect as long as she possibly could. It brought her joy that she had done such a thing, without plan, without knowledge of doing so. And with one final chuckle she headed back home, leaving the image of a lone alicorn at the spot and as the sun rose, the first rays of light came and as quick as the wind, the image was gone.
