Gone in an instant
It was a cold day. Fresh powdery snow covered Ponyville and Sweet Apple Acres. The trees at Sweet Apple Acres were covered in snow. From a pegasi's point of view it just looked like an empty field if the Apple family weren't shoveling the road for a path out of the orchard. Applebloom, the youngest, Applejack, the middle child and Big Mac the eldest of the three. Applejack and Big Mac were shoveling the snow to the side of the road. Big Mac wore a big brown snow jacket, jeans and snow boots. Applejack still wore her hat even with a warm looking green sweater with geometric apples woven into it's pattern. She wore her jeans as well as her buckin' boots. They gripped their shovels as Applebloom sat in a wooden chair from the kitchen with their elderly grandmother whom they called Granny Smith. Applebloom wore a yellow hoodie with a layered sweater underneath. She had a beanie covering her ears. She wore jeans with her fuzzy boots on that kept her feet warm. Granny Smith sat in her rocking chair wearing a green sweater. It had an apple pie right on the front of it. A blanket covered her legs as she sipped on a warm mug of hot chocolate. Applebloom looked over to her grandmother. "Granny?" She said with a smile on her face.
The old mare looked at her granddaughter. "Yes Applebloom?" She said.
Applebloom blushed a bit. "...Ya think you can tell me what our parents did for us for Hearths Warming?" She asked. "I reckon I don't know too much about it but it would be nice to hear it."
Granny smith raised an eye brow. "You aint gonna cry if I tell ya now will you?" She asked. Applebloom shook her head. "Well I'll tell ya tonight when we're all sittin around the fire place. I wanna get a chance to tell you all! Why don't you get Big Mac to help me to my bed? I could use a nap right about now."
Applebloom smiled and nodded as she got up from her chair. She started to hurry down the cleared path way towards her older brother. "Big Mac! Big Mac!" She called out.
Big Mac planted his shovel in the ground and looked back at his little sister. He smiled as Applebloom hugged him. "Woah whatcha need girl?" He said lifting her up putting her on his shoulder.
Applebloom giggled. "Granny needs you to help her into bed!" The little filly said.
Her older brother smiled and set his sister down. "Alright now you go on and help Applejack with getting some of this snow outta the way while I get granny to her bed." He said. "Just keep your guard up. Rainbow Dash is hiding in some of the trees getting ready to pelt us with snow. If you can just run for cover and get her back. She'll stop after that. Got it?" Applebloom smiled and nodded before going to her brothers shovel and pulling it up from the snow. Big Mac faced back towards the house and started to hurry back over. He slowed down as he approached his grandmother. She had her arms up just as if she was wanting a hug. Big Mac grasped her hands and helped her up from the chair. "Alright now careful there granny. Don't wantya busting another hip!"
Granny Smith let out a little laugh. "I know I know." She said. "Its still rare that happens Big Mac. D'ya think you can carry me? Cold's got my joints all locked up." Big Mac let out a laugh and nodded.
Big Mac bent down a bit and put an arm just at the back of his grandmothers legs. He had an arm right on her back as she sat in his arms like a chair. He stood up holding her close to his chest. He then looked to the door and froze feeling a bit stupid as he looked at the closed door before him. He looked back to his sisters. "AJ!" He called out. "C'mon get over here I need help opening the door!"
Applejack sighed and dug her shovel into the ground and turned towards the house starting to jog a bit. "Yeah yeah I'm comin' I'm comin'!" She called out. As she ran she hit a bit of ice she had missed and started to stumble. She caught herself and hurried the rest of the way over and opened the door for her brother and her grandmother. "There we are. Go on get in there but next time bring Applebloom back with ya to open the door!"
Big Mac sighed. "It's cold AJ I don't have ta deal with this right now." He said going inside. He kicked the door closed behind him and looked to Granny Smith in his arms. "Alright there granny?"
Granny smith nodded. "Yes Big Mac... I'm okay... Just tired is all." She said. "Y'mind tuckin' me in deary? I'd do it but I'm a bit shivery..."
Big Mac gave his grandmother a smile. "Sure granny you just sit back and I'll do all the work for ya!" He said. "You need to use the toilet first or you think your good? Don't ever wancha getting a rash." He laughed a bit along with his grandmother.
Hours later Big Mac sat in the living room with both of his sisters. They had tears in their eyes as they held their older brother close. Big Mac had no tear or expression on his face. Big Mac sighed getting up from the couch prying his sisters off. Applebloom was almost stuck to him. When her grasp released she started to cry harder trying to hug him again. He stopped her and knelt down. "Applebloom just stay in here..." He said starting to get a bit misty eyed. "I'll be back... Just... Just gotta make a few calls.... Alright sis...?" Applebloom nodded and went back to her older sister on the couch. Big Mac stood back up pulling a phone from his pocket turning it on before pulling the door open quickly going outside before the frigid air came in. He tapped at the screen sniffling and put it to his ear hearing it buzz.
The phone buzzed a few times. Then came a click. "Big Mac!" Someone on the other side of the phone said. "What's goin' on cousin? How's Granny Smith?" The last few words dug into his heart.
Big Mac sniffled. "...H-Hey Braeburn... I... I got some bad news..." He said sobbing a bit. "...Granny.... She... She just... She's... Gone..."

Again the phone buzzed in his ear. The sniffling he was doing was near violent sobbing. Suddenly the buzzing stopped. "Hello you have reached the Orange residence," The phone said. "Sorry we cant get to the phone right away. We'll return the call as soon as we can so leave a message."
Big Mac sobbed a bit as the phone beeped in his ear. He sobbed a few seconds before starting to talk. "... U-uncle orange... Aunt Orange... Babs... Someone answer... It's bad... Very b-bad..." She said. Applebloom nodded and AJ patted her on the head before standing up and hurrying to the stairs. She ran after her brother just as he darted into the upstairs bathroom. A sigh was heard. "...Kinda had the feeling when the voice mail dropped off..." Someone said. Uncle Orange. "Well I got everyone with me. What's the problem?"

Just before she took the phone away from her ear she could hear her uncle break down before the phone went silent and gave a few beeps in her ear. Scootaloo wore something similar to what Dash wore but had a snow cap and a thicker jacket. Pinkie wore pink. Everything she had on was pink. Pink snow boots, pink snow jacket and pants even pink earmuffs. Fluttershy came in last with Twilight in front of her. Fluttershy wore a green sweater with a pink scarf wrapped around her neck covering her mouth a bit. She wore puffy snow pants as well. Twilight wore a white jacket with a blue snow vest on over that. She also wore blue snow pants looking like they would belong to her older brother Shining Armor. As AJ closed the door she looked back at everyone giving a hefty sigh. "...Thank's for comin' y'all..." She said sadly going towards the kitchen table. She pulled out a chair and sat in it. "...It aint easy sayin' this but... Granny... She.... She just went to sleep... Rainbow Dash came over and pulled out a chair setting it next to her friend. Fluttershy, Rarity and Pinkie Pie sat on the couch. Fluttershy had tears in her eyes and she scrunched up a bit. Fluttershy got up saying nothing and went towards a door next to the stairs with tears in her eyes. Rarity and Pinkie tried getting up to get her but Dash grabbed Rarity's arm. "..N-no... She noticed Big Mac at the corner of her eye as he went to the kitchen. She got up and went over to the counter and leaned on it. "Big Mac." She said. The red stallion looked back at her. "Fluttershy okay?"
Big Mac sighed grabbing a box of what looked like tea. He even grabbed a mug. "...Not really sure there Twi..." He said. "She just woke me from a nap n... I swear I was with Applebloom for a sec..."
Twilight gave a sigh. "...I honestly have no idea what just happened with her..." She said. "One minute she's sitting with AJ next thing you know she just breaks down crying and hides in your room..." Twilight watched as Big Mac turned on the faucet to fill up a tea pot. "...You mind if i go in and see if i can talk with her?"
Big Mac looked back at her as he set the tea pot on the stove. "Sure just be careful with her... I dont want her to start tossing what ever she ate onto my bed or the floor." He said.
Twilight smiled a little bit before leaving the counter. She went into Big Mac's room seeing Fluttershy sitting at the end of his bed. The purple alicorn mare knocked on the door a bit. "Fluttershy?" She said.
Fluttershy looked back at Twilight and held the stuffed toy close looking away again. "...Can you please leave me alone...?" She asked sniffling.
The purple mare sat next to her on the bed. "You know I cant do that Flutters." She said softly as she hugged her friend. "...I'm just worried about you... Why did you run off crying?"
The pink maned pegasus hung her head looking at the toy in her hands. "...A-are you sure you want to know....?" She asked. She looked to Twilight who nodded. "Well.... Just a few years ago around this time... My mommy died from cancer... I went to visit her in the hospital and she just...." Fluttershy whimpered a bit before starting to cry.
Twilight gave a sad aw and hugged Fluttershy putting her head into her shoulder. She shushed her just as Big Mac came in. "I'm hearin' cryin'!" He said hopping onto the bed. "What happened?"
