The Brony That Became Death
Chapter 1: Learning New Things
"Now that was a party!" I said to myself as I unlocked the car. The party had been great, plus I'd had a lot of fun with my friends. We had spent about four hours at that house and it had been one of the best time’s I’d had in years I headed outside to my car, unlocking it and slipping into the driver’s seat. Pushing the keys into the ignition, I started it up, smiling as it ticked over happily. I wasn't sure it would even start up, seeing how cold it had been recently. As I made my way through the streets that still had Trick-or-Treaters, my cell phone began to ring. I cautiously slid it out of my pocket and answered it.
"Who is it?" I ask gruffly.
"Sidney! Where have you been! You said that you were only going to be out for a few hours." said my mom in her worried tone.
"Mom, it's only been like four hours, chill. Anyway, I'm on my way ho-" I was cut off by a massive object struck the side of my car. The phone fell from my grasp as I slammed into the steering wheel. I glanced up, dazed, as I finally came to a halt. Peering out the window, I saw the trail on the floor and the tell-tale smell of gasoline in the air. My eyes widened as the trail ignited, sending the truck's tank hurtling through the air, as several gallons of burning gasoline showered me and my car. I felt the agonising burning, screaming at the top of my lungs as I felt intense pain across every inch of my body. It seemed to last forever, darkness closing in as my suffering finally ceased.
"Ugggggg. Too much pain." I moaned, as some of my senses began to return to me slowly. However, not all of them seemed to be right. My body, it felt.....different. Lighter, almost. Slowly rising to my feet, I noticed more changes to my physique, some more noticeable than others. The first thing I noticed, was that I felt like I was carrying a large weight on my shoulders, Almost like a backpack of rocks had been dumped on me. I felt a near primal and ancient energy in my body. I felt, stronger and faster than normal. Almost like my reflexes had been retuned.
As I raised my hands to my head to try and find the cause of the pounding headache I'd developed, I noticed something else. Something dark that, quite frankly, scared the living hell out of me. My hands had developed more. they had become longer, more nimble and had an almost cold aurora around them.
I gave my new fingers an experimental twirl, testing that, they did indeed, work perfectly like normal. Satisfied my hands weren't about to fall off, I checked along the rest of my new form, patting and prodding through the thick, black armoured robes, draped down to the ground. The cloak seemed to be made of a gaseous substance rather than fabric, extending from my form rather than being placed over it. I checked underneath, checking what I already knew.
My entire body was the same bleached bone that my hands were made of. I felt around, landing my hands on a small black and gold satchel, crudely attached to my robes with an ornate band of silver skulls. The skulls had no copies, each one depicting a different species. Curiosity took me, and as I rummaged through the satchel, I came across a small black book. I slowly opened it, and as I flipped through the first of thousands of pages, all of them blank.
Suddenly, I felt a rough, heavy object banging against my side as I moved. I was surprised I hadn't noticed it before, but it appeared to be a large silvery metallic lantern with a deep purplish green emanating from within. The lantern, like the satchel, was attached to my robes by a thick chain, seemingly merging into the right hand side of my robes. As I tried to move, I was hit by the heavy load on my back again. Rising up slowly, casting a looming shadow over me was the outline of a large pair of skeletal wings. My mind began to process the information, putting pieces together and coming to the final conclusion.
“I'm.....the Grim Reaper? I’d seen it in mythology, a being of dark and ancient power, reaping the souls of the dead. Of course, my first reaction was perfectly normal.
"HELL YEAH! This is amazing.“ I flexed my wings, experimenting with them before a thought struck me.
”Wait.....where's my scythe? If I’m the grim reaper, I must have a scythe." As if on cue, a purple mist came from my hands, slowly forming into the shape of an object, still gaseous in nature. Although, as it elongated and solidified, the visible shape of a scythe was formed. My attention drifted to my other hand, as a similar process happened, until I was left holding two wicked scythes, with arcane inscriptions along the blades.
”hmm, impressive." I muttered, before jumping back at my voice. It was not the voice I was used to. It was deeper, more gravelly, and a lot more menacing. Each syllable carrying an echo behind it. I then began to take in my surroundings, noticing for the first time that I was actually in a forest. A forest that somehow looked... familiar.
“Where have I seen this place before?" I asked myself mentally. Suddenly, I heard a low, rumbling growl from behind me. Peering over my shoulder, not quite turning, I saw a large wolf shape creature. Its whole body seemed to be a timber frame; a green energy was coming from its eyes as it stared right into the back of my head. Without warning, the wolf pounced; aiming straight for what it though, was an undefended part of my body. Acting purely on instinct, I whirled around, the scythe's close behind. The left on made contact with the wolf's leg, severing it effortlessly. As the beast mewled and whined in pain, I lined the bladed onto its neck, crossing them through easily. The wolf's head rolled away, the fire leaving its eyes as deep, green blood flowed from the wound. Staining the ground around.
As the wolf’s frame began to fall apart, a thick black and purple smoke began to rise from it. The door sprung open on my lantern and seemed to suck the essence in. As the hatch on the lantern closed, I then began to feel memories and emotion flow into my head and soon, I knew everything that it did in its life. I knew what it saw, did, thought, smelled, and heard and even the knowledge of anything it had ever known.
"That’s…..different.” Taking a final glance at the pile of wood and leaves, my eyes, flashed, showing to me the wolf’s memories. Including an intricate knowledge of the forest. I gave a rough chuckle, impressed by my own power, and began to wander my new home.
