The purpose of this story was not to offend, but to entertain. I chose to do this for making a more unique experience. God knows we don't need another vampire OctaScratch.
Chapter One: A Night to Remember
The beat was pumping. Her heart was in complete sync with the stereo. Her smile was one of pure euphoria. Behind her purple shades, she scanned the room, and saw the crowd under her trance. Every dance, every movement, every muscle twitch or body twist could be changed with a flip of a switch. Everyone was under her fingers and slave to the rhythm. All was well that night.
The young DJ's thought's weren't so complicated, because they simply boiled down to three things. She gets to be the DJ to play for Canterlot High School Fall Formal, all she has to do is play awesome music and have fun, and lastly, she's getting paid to do this.
Although this job was easy for Vinyl, not just anybody can be a DJ. It takes skills, knowledge, and a sense to feel out the crowd and set the mood. Not just anybody can do this job, because not everybody can be Vinyl Scratch. It was through her renowned skills that the planning committee found her uniquely qualified for the Fall Formal. Also the school couldn't afford their regular DJ due to budget cuts.
Vinyl herself wasn't wearing a special dress like everyone else since she was considered to be “working” at the event, and was in fact just wearing her everyday clothes. They consisted of a white jacket with blue stripes going down the shoulders accompanied by pink, fingerless gloves that were a bit to big for her. Running down her legs were a pair of not-too-tight purple pants with pink electric looking decals and a white skirt with a backwards 8th note on it. And to complete the look were her pair of stylish basketball shoes.
Everything had been going perfectly so far. Vinyl kept the music going; everyone had fun. The Fall Formal was a complete blast, and that wasn't just a figure of speech. After the new girl, Twilight Sparkle won the crown, that's when shit started getting strange. Like really strange.
Vinyl didn't get the whole story, not many people did, but what she knew was that there was ultimate cosmic power, demons, semi-anthropomorphic horse transformation, and rainbow blast of pure concentrated friendship which left a crater in front of the school, where everyone found a sobbing Sunset Shimmer beneath Twilight
"The magic of friendship doesn't just exist in Equestria. It's everywhere. You can..."
'Are- are we not calling the cops?'
"But... But all I've ever done since being here is drive everyone apart. I don't know the first thing about friendship."
'Like shouldn't we get the government involved? FBI, CIA, MiB, anybody?'
"I bet they can teach you."
'There is literally a crater in the front of school'
"I believe this belongs to you. A true princess in any world leads not..."
'Am I really the only one here, who's actually bothered by this?'
"...I hope you see it too, Princess Twilight."
"I do."
[crowd cheers]
'Okay, looks like I am.'
"Would now be a completely awkward time to ask you for that dance?"
'Uh, shit, time to get back to work I guess.'
After dealing with Snips, Snails, and Sunset Shimmer, the students returned to the dance, and the party was alive again with the flip of a switch on the Vinyl Scratch's turntables. Flash and Twilight were, for lack of better term, dancing, and completely cutting loose. The CMC were having fun together, until Rainbow Dash came by and... flew Scootaloo around in the air... 'Like seriously, no one is freaked out by this? Is it just me? I need a cigarette.'
Vinyl prepared to leave her station and set up a long arrangement of songs to make sure no one noticed she was gone. She queued up her laptop and walked out of the gym to a long, secluded hallway, where she knew no one else hanged out.
She passed many classrooms and lockers, until she found the exit she was looking for, opened it up, and stepped outside. A warm wind swept around her but after the door was closed, the air settled, leaving the pale DJ with the peaceful seclusion she sought after. The concrete patio she stood on was at least 7 feet above the ground and had stairs that lead down to her right. Only now was the roar of the stereo muffled to soft beat and she could truely appreciate the tranquility of night in all it's splendor, when the bright, white moon was close to hitting its peak at the center of the sky. Vinyl wiped the sweat she worked up in the gymnasium, and leaned against the metal, blue rail guard away from the door.
After a few years of routine, Vinyl's mind didn't even see the 'tobacco free zone' sign directly behind her next to the door. She reached into her jacket pocket and grabbed a pack of cigarettes. She picked one out before putting the box back and reaching for a lighter in her other pocket. She took the cigarette to her mouth and was about to light it, when her nerves froze at the sound of the door behind her squeak at it's hinges.
'Nobody ever comes here! what the fuck!?'
She quickly slid the contraband into her loose fitting gloves and turned her head to look at the door. What she saw was the head of girl about her height peaking from the door.
And she stood there and stared.
For an awkward amount of time.
Juuuuuust staring.
'okay, this is a bit weird.'
Vinyl decided to break the silence with a simple, "Hey."
The strange girl responded in turn with a short and flat, "Hello."
The pale DJ started to silently judge the girl based on the tone of the voice, but stopped herself from coming to any conclusions so quickly. But based on her observations so far, she assumed the girl was rather distant and weird. Nothing's wrong with being a little off.
The silence started to creep in between the two, before Vinyl, more confused than upset, asked, "Do you want something?"
"I want to ask you a question," the girl stated. Again, she spoke in such a choppy way, like a bad actor reading from a script.
'Okay I guess, she's going to need a bit more prompting with.... everything.'
"So what's your question?"
"You play the music right?"
"Yeah. I'm the DJ."
"You play a lot of good songs"
"I try."
After another awkward moment of silence, Vinyl grained internally as she figured her situation was becoming worse. She just wanted a little peace, but now, she's figuring that she's going to be spending her break babysitting.
"You want to come join me outside?"
"Yes," She said after a minute of hesitation.
"..."
"..."
'God. Damnit.'
"Well, you gonna just talk to me from the door?" It was rhetorical but the girl seemed to think on it.
“Just come out here.” Vinyl groaned, asking herself why she was trying to encourage the girl to join her.
The door opened wider revealing the rest of the girl as she came to stand next to Vinyl. She wore a simple light purple dress with a collared shirt underneath with a pink bow tie adorned her neck. She was a step away from Vinyl before she simply stood in her proximity with a simple level stare.
'Fuck it.'
Vinyl took out her cigarette and lit it. She took a quick inhale, before letting it out. After she got the calmed her craving, and found the calming effect she wanted she glanced to her right for any indication this was bothering the retard. If it did, her new acquaintance wasn't showing it.
Deciding to smooth this out as much as possible, Vinyl asked, "So, what's your name?"
"Octavia."
"Octavia, huh. That's a pretty name," the DJ complimented in a casual way, "My name's Vinyl."
Quickly, Octavia blurted out, "Vinoll is a pretty name too."
Vinyl smiled softly at the rushed compliment despite the mispronunciation of her name.
'Awwww, well shit. Ain't that sweet.'
After another puff of smoke, she asked,"So you like music, huh?"
Octavia's eyes lit up, "Oh I love music. I play music all the time at home!"
Vinyl looked expectantly at Octavia, before she realized she needed to make another prompt to get anymore answers. She rolled her eyes, "So do you play instrument or something?" '
Wait what am I thinking? She's a tard. I doubt she'd....'
Octavia was practically racing in place, "Oh, yes! I got a cello I play at home. My uncle once played a cello, and then I really liked it, so I asked my mommy if I could have one and then she told me I could have one on Christmas if I was nice, so then I was really nice, and then on Christmas I got one. And then Mommy even had me go to people who could teach me, and then I played and played and played, but I never played the songs you play."
Vinyl smiled from the passion the cellist was giving off, "That's pretty cool."
The compliment was swiftly returned with a reply from Octavia, "You're pretty cool too."
And just as quickly as it was expunged the silence returned, but only this time, it was less uncomfortable than earlier. She resigned herself from trying to talk more with Octavia and just settled to smoke in peace, looking out to the grace of the full moon and the landscapes beneath it. It remained this was for a minute or so, before the door behind Vinyl swung open too fast for her to react. When she looked, she saw a middle aged woman she didn't recognise, holding open the heavy door looking at Octavia. She had short black hair and was wearing a green wool sweater.
"There you are!" the new lady exclaimed, before taking on a motherly tone, "Octavia, you know you shouldn't run off like that. I always need to be around to keep an eye on you."
The woman hen shifted her head to look at Vinyl. She caught sight of the cigarette in the student's hand, but sighed and didn't comment it. She righted her eyes towards the pale girl's face to ask, "Who are you?"
"I'm Vinyl Scratch. DJ extraordinaire, you?" Vinyl replied cooly.
"I'm Ms. Collins, Octavia's Caretaker."
She gave a gracious smile to Vinyl, "Thank you for watching over her."
Vinyl waved her off, "It was no biggie."
The caretaker turned her attention to the special-needs cellist and called to her, "C'mon Octavia, we should get back to the dance."
Octavia though was reluctant, "But I wanted to stay out here with Vinall," she whined.
"Don't worry Octy, I'll be in the gym in just a second. You should go with Ms. Collins."
After Vinyl gave her word, Octavia gave up her resistance and held her caretaker's outstretched hand.
"Bye Vinoll" And with that Octavia had slipped past the door as it closed, leaving the young DJ alone with her thoughts, to finish smoking in peace.
VinylI idly thought about how hard life might suck being a tard guard. I mean, you're spending most of your time in the day around a special needs kid. Well, I guess it's a living. And it's not like that Octavia girl is a bad kid. She's weird and definitely needs to have someone hold her hand, but she's alright. At least she doesn't fling shit at people... I hope.
The embers of the cigarette finally crawled close to the filter. Vinyl stopped dwelling on Octavia and stood up straight. She dropped the cigarette butt and pressed it into the concrete floor before kicking it into the dirt below. She left the balcony and returned to the gym.
Vinyl actually made it right on time. She was behind the turntables just as the last song of her preset track ended, giving her seconds to pick a song and play it, but for the skilled DJ that was more than enough time.
She picked a record with lightning reflex, spinned it while flipping it between her fingers, and then slamming it into place with just enough restraint to not break the disk, before setting the needle, playing the next perfect song to follow up the last track. Or at least that's what Vinyl would tell everyone; In actuality she picked out a disk at random, fumble around with it, before it fell into place, and flipped a switch.
Despite almost messing up the music, the night went off without incident for Vinyl. Everyone had a great time dancing, hell, she actually spotted Octavia in her own corner of the gym punching up toward the ceiling, almost to the beat of the music, having a blast. Vinyl had warm smile on her face
'Still better than Twilight.'
Speaking of the pony princess Jesus, I really feel like someone should address that, she apparently returned to her home dimension and now the demon slaying powers she gave to her friends are gone... shit, I need some air.
Vinyl set up another track of slow songs, to get people settled down and ready for the end of prom, and left through the front doors to see a fraction of the student body loitering outside planning on what to do next. She stands by herself to let herself cool down from the heat in the gym and to give a moment to decompose, but that wouldn't last long.
"Hey Vinyl," someone called out to her. When she looked for the owner of the voice she was extremely disappointed from who it was. It's Flash 'motherfuckin' Sentry. "Nice performance out there. Was pretty cool."
Now Vinyl didn't have anything against Flash. Nobody in school had a beef with him. He was a pretty okay guy who just hanged out with his friends and tries to hit on girls every now and then, but goddamn does he have an aura around him that compels people to hate him for nothing.
Vinyl sighed, "Glad you enjoyed it."
"Tonight was pretty fun, but I think it might've ended too soon. How bout afterwards, you and I go cruising in my mustang?"
"Sorry dude, I have to stay and put away all the equipment away after prom's over."
"No problem, I can wait."
"No, I don't want to hold you up."
"No, it's fine"
"Look, I-" Flash's rejection was interrupted, with a sharp screech.
"IIAHIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
Vinyl quickly ducked over and covered her ears over her head.
Even with her ears covered she could still feel the rage in the voice. After a few intense seconds the scream stopped. Vinyl opened her eyes and looked up to the source source of the warped warcry. Octavia was standing arms out, nostrils flared, and eye burrowing into Flash.
Flash only got a moment to breathe before Octavia let out her warcry again, while charging him. Her full body tackle threw Flash onto the ground, Octavia was ontop of him, letting loose a flurry of wild punches to Flash's face. Flash though was covering his face with his arms which due to the uncoordinated quality of the punches, was enough to stop Octavia from getting through.
Octavia's wrath didn't last long, however, since her caretaker finally rushed in and dragged her by the collar of her dress off to the parking lot. But as she was dragged by her heels away from the school, Octavia saw Vinyl, and at that instance her warface vanished at an instant, replaced with a happy go lucky demeanor.
"Bye Vinoll," Octavia said as she waved to Vinyl while still being dragged off.
"Bye, Octavia."
And that was the night, Vinyl Scratch met Octavia
