02-Leaving Home

I opened my eyes and sat up in bed. Looking out the window I saw that it was still dark outside. I got out of bed and quietly tip-toed downstairs. As I looked into the doorway of the kitchen, my long dark-pink mane fell onto my left eye. Peeking into the kitchen, I saw Father in the fridge, the light showing him drinking some more of his beer.

'This might be bad for me when it reaches morning.' I thought. Whenever Father drinks, he always throws the glass bottles at me. The glass breaking over my body and causing me to bleed. He's done this to me ever since I was a little filly. Even now, as an teenager, he still throws bottles at me whenever I so much as speak. Father always seems to be in an drunken rage lately. At first when I was littler not so much. But now that I'm on my way to becoming a young mare, it has become more so. Limestone and Igneous are now the favorites of the family. I'm just the disappointment. Whenever Father sees me, he goes to harm me in some way. Whenever Mother saw me, she just looked away like she didn't even know that I was there. I felt like an outcast. Like the ugly duckling in a family of swans. I snuck back upstairs and crawled back into bed. I faced the wall but didn't fall back asleep. I laid there facing the wall for hours, until I felt the warm little rays of sunlight on the bottom of my hooves. I looked out the window and saw that it was still pretty early, so no pony would be up yet. I got back up and snuck back downstairs. I looked back into the kitchen and saw that Father was not there anymore. I snuck past and walked up to the front door. I opened it up and went outside. I quietly closed the door behind me and started trotting towards the farm. I had brought my saddlebag with me and my hammer. I quickly stared smashing rocks with my hammer and placing the gem pieces into my bag.

" Lets see who's the early pony now Igneous and Limestone." I murmured. I started to move towards the next pile of rocks, when I heard a deep rumbling noise. I looked up into the the sky expecting to see something there that could've been causing the rumbling noise, but saw nothing. Then I saw a pony falling down out of the sky, a rainbow trailing behind her, or, him. No, It looked like a her. She was light blue and had a rainbow mane and tail. It looked like her wings were broken and she could not fly. I watched helplessly as she fell. I probably would have helped her, but she was too far away and I was just a useless Earth pony. I turned and continued to smash the rocks. As the sun crept up even further, I had practically cleared away the whole yard. Yes, I may have been covered in dust, and pieces of rock in my mane, and my hooves ached like hell, but I had actually felt like I accomplished something. I turned and started walking back towards the barn, just to see Igneous and Limestone come out, with their pickaxes and hammers in hoof.

"You two can have the rest of the field, or what's left of it." I said calmly as they passed. I walked into the house and went into the kitchen. Mother was in there. She was just setting out plates for breakfast.

"Hi Ma." I said, though I doubt she'd payed attention to me anyway. But I got a surprise this time. Ma turned around and looked at me, then looking around to make sure no pony else was around, she handed me a small slice of cake.
"Here. I saved it from the day before, from your father's tea cake. Now eat it quickly, and don't let Pa see you." She said, urging it into my hooves. I politely took the cake and stuffed it into my mouth. After I finished chewing and swallowing, I looked at my Ma.
"Thanks Ma." I whispered. She nodded at me and turned back around just as Pa came wobbling into the kitchen.

"Pinkamena! You're in big trouble young lady!!" He slurred. I just sighed and walked over to him.

"You're grounded!! Go to your room!" He shouted at me. Then he walked out and went to the den. Ma put a hoof on my shoulder, and I turned around. She handed me a note. I tucked it into my bag and trotted upstairs, where I then read it. "Meet me in the yard tonight okay? I have something to discuss with you" After I read it, I stuck it into my drawer and laid on my bed, taking a good long nap.

When I woke up later that night, I saw a plate on my dresser. It had an even bigger portion of hay than i was used to, and some fruits and vegetables!! I smiled happily and ate it all up. Then, creeping downstairs, I quietly walked outside and to the far end of the field where Momma was waiting.
"You wanted to see me Ma?" I asked her.
"Yes dear. I wanted to tell you something. I'm sorry. All these years you were treated badly, and I hated it. But I couldn't help, in fear of Papa. But Now I can take action. You saw that mare fall from the sky yesterday too didn't you?" She told me. I gasped. She knew? But how? When?
"Yes I did but, how did you see it?" I asked her in disbelief.
"I saw the rainbow. I saw mine, and yours, freedom. You have to run away. Run away from this godforsaken farm! Its the only way to free the daughter I truly care about."
"B-But what about pa?"
Momma sighed. Then looked at me with dull yellow eyes.
"You have to kill him."
