Dreams can take ponies to very funny places sometimes. Of course, that’s expected, and obvious; the only pony to even be able to remotely control dreams is the Lunar Goddess herself, Princess Luna. And even then, she can only work with what she has before her. For the less fortunate and non-royally magical equine, they simply were left to wander through whatever fabric their unconsciousness had weaved in their slumber. Some would have pleasant dreams, while others would have terrible nightmares, like the time that Rainbow Dash woke half the town when snapping out of a nightmare about the Wonderbolts rejecting her application to the team. Twilight put a sound barrier around her cloud home, fortunately, after the incident.
But in the early wintry morning of that December, one stallion certainly found himself to be warm and snug both in the real world and in the dream world. The life of Donut Joe had certainly been turning out quite well in recent months; after establishing a newfound relationship with the bouncy, curvy, and all around ball of warmth that was Pinkie Pie, things had been going swimmingly along. The diner had continued to thrive so far, providing a consistent steady income for him to assure a stable life in Ponyville. There hadn’t been any major incidents or troubles that afflicted the town, meaning most things were calm by this time of year anyway. The cozy atmosphere and mindset aided the diner in being a place that let ponies come in to relax with a sweet bite to eat.
At the current time, though, Joe’s mind was deeply imbedded in the idea of relaxing. His dream was strange, he had to admit; he was walking through some odd valley he’d never seen before, the tall mountains on either side impeding him from looking out in any direction save for forward or behind. When he found himself seemingly in the middle of the path between the two, the sun chose that time to rise. Why he was walking this path at night, he knew not. But as the sun rose up and up, the mountains themselves came into view properly. The morning sunrise was certainly lovely, he had to admit; it was casting a beautiful pink hue against the tall rocky surfaces.
“Joe?”
That’s strange, the wind sounded just like Pinkie’s voice. The colors of the mountains didn’t change, remaining a steady pink, even as the sun rose up.
“Joe, you’re drooling again, silly.”
Like a popped balloon, Joe’s subconscious snapped him back into reality, his eyes blinking open and finding that his entire world was nothing but pink at the moment. He was also pleasantly warm, like he was wrapped entirely in some sort of heated embrace that was very convincing in keeping him still. His arms moved, but there was little he could do to move them; they were pinned underneath an equally warm and very soft and squishy thing. Two things, he could guess, as both hands got a full grasp and yet had plenty more to feel.
“Joe, you naughty silly! You just can’t get enough of my tushie, huh?”
It was then that Joe’s informational and rational mind snapped into action, finally out of hibernation and back into activity. It informed him of some key things that he’d neglected to remember: he was not alone in bed, for a start. The very warm thing he was snuggled up to was living and breathing, along with warm and soft. His hands were squeezing – kneading, if his instincts were right – two very plush, full butt cheeks. Lifting his head up, he also discovered two key facts: his head was smack dab planted between two wonderful, fantastically sized breasts that had an alluring scent that almost made him want to bury his face in them again. That, and that his girlfriend, Pinkie Pie, was watching him do all this with a light red tinge to her cheeks and a dazzling smile on her muzzle.
“Oh…Pinkie. Um. I was…dreaming? Yeah, there we are. I was dreaming.” Joe sleepily mumbled before yawning, giving up and resting his chin in her cleavage, her breasts parted around his head. He must’ve snuggled up to the bouncy mare in his sleep, he reasoned. ‘Obviously one of my better ideas. Good job brain.’ He told himself as he relished the soft fur brushing his cheek. Pinkie’s body gave a light shake as she giggled at her boyfriend’s state.
“Musta been one heck of a dream, cuz you were out like a light!” Pinkie noted, bringing a hand up to rub his back slowly. “Course, you were all wore out after last night. That was so fun!”
Memories came to Joe’s mind as he recalled last night. He had taken Pinkie out for a nice little date night after closing work early. They had stopped in one of the local bars and had drinks as well as a nice time chatting with Rainbow Dash and Soarin’. They hit it off nicely, even did a few drinking games together. Then they stumbled home and promptly hit the hay once enough clothes had been thrown off.
He winced as a sharp stab of pain hit him in the right temple. There was the pang of hangover pain that had eluded him thus far. “How much did we have, Pinkie? My head feels like Discord used it to play volleyball with a Hydra.”
Pinkie giggled at the odd image before replying. “We had a few mugs between us both. Though you tried to take on Soarin’ when he brought out the heavier stuff. That’s the kind of drink that makes a pony’s toes curl!” She adopted a thinking expression at that. “I wonder if ponies get stronger toes when they drink hard liquor like that.”
Joe chuckled quietly, keeping his volume down for the sake of his headache. “Remind me to pay up for Soarin’s bet, if there was one. I remember something about pies.” He said as he sat up reluctantly, moving to let Pinkie lie at ease without him atop her. “Want me to fix us some coffee?”
The busty mare brought her hand to her cheek in thought before giggling to herself. “I can do it for you. You just relax and take it easy there.” She replied, reaching over to pat his chest lightly. He smiled at her action before she continued. “I’ll get myself a shower first. Rarity always says ‘a lady must look after her appearance’! Or was it ‘her mane’?” she asked herself before shrugging her shoulders. Getting up in one bounce, Joe was treated to the delightful sight of Pinkie’s full body on display for him to see. From her expansive, glorious rear perched atop thick legs to the swell of her breasts visible from behind, to the curled, cotton-candy pink mane that lay atop her head.
“You got it made, Joe.” He told himself, watching the beauty vanish into the bathroom. He sighed and rolled over with his eyes closed. “You definitely got it-“The rest of his self-compliment was cut off by his abrupt departure from the mattress, due to unknowingly rolling off of the side and to the floor with a thump. “…made.”

After a brief shower for them both (Joe choosing this time to take his separate to spare them time and to keep them from being late for certain reasons) as well as breakfast, the pair bundled up into their winter gear. Ponyville itself wasn’t smothered in snow just yet; the weather teams had deemed it smart to give the town ample time to gather clothing and their various goods before unleashing any heavy snow storms upon them. There had been complaints before of a lack of warning; thus the preparation time.
The sky above was deceivingly clear, the sun beaming down upon the wintertime landscape. If any expected a redemption from the cold weather in the sun’s radiant beams, they were harshly rejected by the often timely wind chills coming from the gusts above, the pegasi at work keeping the snowstorms at bay and in place until it was deemed time to release them. Many of the shops and stalls about town that were still running had adapted for the weather change; heaters were installed and running behind counters, while others had longer tarps or drapes extended over their railings to better shield onlookers from the winds.
Pinkie shivered as one particular gust blew by, ruffling her scarf and mane as she drew closer to Joe. “Brrr! This wind is freezing! It’s cold enough to freeze ponies still!” She exclaimed. “Oooh! Pony-sicles! That would be so cool! Haha, get it! Cool ponies from cold ponysicles?”
Donut Joe only laughed and shook his head. “Pinkie, I imagine if you had your say of things, the entire world would be a candy land.” He replied.
“Hey, what’s wrong with candy land?” Pinkie pouted playfully, looking up to the brown-maned stallion. “It would be lots of fun!”
“Yes, except for the part where the furniture melts in the summer. Or the toilet. Or the bed.” He listed off.
Pinkie, in her mature knowledge of all things wit, responded with a raspberry at her coltfriend. “You just haven’t gotten to enjoy the delights of a candy lifestyle! Trust me, one day, there will be a whole town made of sweets. It’d be a paradise!” She proclaimed, daydreaming of the fantasy world. “I wonder if I could get Discord to do that for my birthday?”
An arm around her middle brought her into her stallion’s side, who was still chuckling at how taken she was with the idea. “Pinkie, if you really want it, then I’m sure I’ll find a way to make it work.” He leaned closer to whisper as she tilted her head. “Like that chocolate sundae we had in bed last week.”
The party pony’s cheeks lit up as she looked away, smiling demurely. “That had been a lot of fun…” she noted, but her thoughts were cut off due to a sudden meeting of face with snow; particularly via a random snowball chucked her way that she normally would avoid if not for memories of Joe fulfilling one of her sexual fantasies involving chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and a very messy bedroom the following day. Shaking her head to free herself of snow, she looked to the culprit. “Scootaloo! I didn’t know we were having a snowball fight! No fair!”
“Sorry, Pinkie! That one got away from me!” the purple-bobcut maned pegasus called back to her. Donned in her Wonderbolt themed coat and mitts, the athletic pegasi waved at the pair before turning back to her opponents. “Applebloom, Sweetie! Ease up! We got innocents!” Their response was a double shot of snow that she only just barely dodged, the balls of compacted white ice smacking into the building behind her. “Hey!”
Pinkie giggled while Joe looked on with a small smile at the scene. Applebloom and Sweetie Belle had fortified themselves behind a cart, while Scootaloo had taken to weaving in and out of the light poles and a statue commemorating the town’s founder, whose hooves were lightly dashed with snow. “How did you two even get snow? All the snow clouds are supposed to be kept stashed away until later.” Joe questioned.
“Uh…Dash might’ve loaned us a cloud after we begged her for awhile.” Scootaloo answered, scratching her cheek in a bashful reflex. “She was nice enough to give us a spare, though we’ve finished it out by now. Promise you won’t tell anypony?” She tried to turn the puppy dog eyes onto him, but Joe resisted. Only Pinkie could pull that off with him, using those big baby blues of hers.
“Only if you three promise to come by the shop and get some hot cocoa in you. You can’t stay out in the cold too long, you know!” Joe insisted.
Finding this to be a fair compromise between them, Scootaloo surrendered to Applebloom and Sweetie Belle, who joined the three as they headed for the place of business. Donut Joe’s diner was living up to a much better position than its name implied; with the steady success he’s had over the past few months, Joe was able to request new seats to be installed, updating and keeping the building renovated for the customers’ comfort. The usual cushions had been refitted with softer seating, letting one feel almost akin to sitting on a cloud chair. The windows had also been redone, due in part to a bad storm that had blown through and damaged some of the glass. The newly installed pieces were reinforced and had a special sealing done to keep the building insulated for the cold weather inbound. Already, Joe was counting successes in his additions; the appeal of a warm place to take a break in for part of the day’s labor shone in many ponies’ minds. While there were no construction projects going on in the winter time or much farm work, many a pony still made the excuse to stop by for a bite or warm drink.
Stepping inside, Joe nodded at the Crusaders to take a seat wherever they chose, having prime pickings with them being the first customers of the day. He and Pinkie headed to the employee area, swapping their winter gear out for their work uniforms. With the holidays in mind, Joe had shifted the color schemes some, the usual white apron replaced with a deep red with green trimming, his folded hat matching the scheme with a touch of holly on either side. It fit him snugly, he admitted, making him ponder if he’d indulged in a little too much post-work treats of late.
Pinkie’s uniform mimicked Joe’s colors, having chosen to go for a work safe button up shirt and pants that seemed to fit her like a second skin, in Joe’s eyes. Her impressive cleavage pushed against the fabric like a dam barely restraining a monsoon, yet she somehow prevented herself from having any slipups or incidents with busting the buttons. Likewise, her jeans adhered to the strict, powerful orders of her butt, the plump cheeks filling the fabric and stretching it to show off a healthy jiggle with every bouncy step the energetic mare took. Joe admitted that he had a guilty pleasure sometimes in just watching Pinkie work. But it wasn’t all physical appeal. The way she smiled when she was happy, her outgoing nature, the way she made customers relish their time in the shop.
He blinked as he eyed her bending over to dig out a fresh paper roll for the register, and momentarily let his train of thought plummet into the crevice of the gutter much like his mind did when he beheld her bountiful booty. When she straightened back up, he shook his head and went back into work mode, doing his best to stay focused despite the curvy, jiggling distraction nearby. The day was already looking well; a few customers had already shown up when they saw Pinkie and Joe come inside, and had waited patiently for them to set up. Once Joe unlocked the doors, however, the flow began, and he had to smile at the warm familiarity of it all.
It was about a half hour later that Joe spotted something of interest; a grey-coated Pegasus colt who had just wandered in the door. “Hey, Rumble!” he called to the boy, who smiled at being recognized and approached the counter. “What’re you doin’ here, sport? I thought you’d be busy trying to help your brother with all this winter we have coming in.”
Rumble smiled mischievously. “Well, you would think so, but they’re apparently so close to being ready that they don’t need as many hands on to help. So he said to take the day off, and so here I am!”
Joe only raised an eyebrow and smirked at the colt. “Take the day off, or go out to get some sweets for him to snack on?” he questioned.
“Alright, alright, you got me. I’m on a sweet run.” Rumble held up his hands defensively. “You know how Thunderlane gets: he always has something extra so he can try to sweet talk those two pegasus mares into being more than friends.” He explains.
Joe shook his head and chuckled. “Always playing the field, huh? Well, I’ll get your normal order ready. Say, I saw the Crusaders earlier today, they’re here too. Why don’t you go visit with them while I get it fixed?” At his suggestion, Rumble blinked in surprise before looking about the diner. Spotting the trio, he called to them and waved, getting back a cheer from all three, Scootaloo getting up to offer him a seat as he came over.
Joe watched him go before getting to work, pulling out the various treats and snacks that Thunderlane always had Rumble fetch. He decided to be generous today, adding in a few extra portions. Just as he was finishing, however, Pinkie yelled to Joe, making his head smack up into the top panel of the display.
“Ow! What is-“his question was cut off as Pinkie’s hand covered his mouth. Blinking in confusion and still slightly dazed, he looked to the party mare who was staring out over the counter suspiciously. “Pfffmie.” He tried to say, but remained muffled.
“My Pinkie sense tells me something’s afoot in here, Joe. And it’s not a wandering foot either!” Pinkie whispered to him, her eyes scanning before coming to rest on the CMC and Rumble sitting in their booth. Eyes narrowing, her tail gave a twitch before she moved, Joe haphazardly tagging along as they kept out of sight beneath the counter. “Ah-ha! Look, Joe!”
“Ah cfft.” Pinkie blinked at the reply.
“What do you mean you can’t? You haven’t gone blind, have you?” she questioned, not letting Joe speak as she gasped dramatically. “Oh, no! I knew I should’ve listened to those public service videos about ponies going blind!”
“Pfffie.”
“Don’t worry, Joe! I can take care of you, even if you’re blind! Besides, it’ll be like when you’re blindfolded in the bedroom! Except I can’t always pleasure you like when we’re in public. Unless you want to, in which case I know this one spot where-“
Joe finally removed her hand carefully from his mouth and held it as he cut her off. “Pinkie. I’m not blind. I’m fine.”
Another gasp was her reply. “It’s a miracle!” She exclaimed, hugging him into her bosom as she cooed and petted his mane. “Oh, and just in time for Hearth’s Warming too!”
Joe was momentarily pulled from his train of thought as his face was once more snuggled into the generous cleavage of Pinkie’s breasts, their softness clear as he momentarily forgot what he was going to say. He then snapped out of his daydream of marshmallow pillows and brought himself back to reality. “Pinkie. What were you staring at?” He asked finally.
“Oh!” she exclaimed and then smiled. “Well, my Pinkie sense told me something was afoot! Or ahoof?” she muttered to herself before shrugging her shoulders. “Something was making me tingle and it was in the direction of Applebloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, and Rumble.” She peered out over the counter’s edge again, Joe following suit. “See, look there!”
“Yes, Pinkie, they’re up to…being social.” Joe summarized as he observed the four just talking to one another. Rumble was explaining something to Scootaloo as she listened, while her two friends looked on. Scootaloo then appeared surprised, her wings giving an involuntary buzzing flap as Applebloom and Sweetie Belle laughed. “Like normal teens are.”
“I know that, silly!” Pinkie replied as her cotton-candy tail waved back and forth excitedly. “But see how my tail is moving? That means that something’s going on nearby. Something good though! If it was bad, my tail would be twitching, not shaking.”
Donut Joe wisely accepted this and chose not to question it. The fabled Pinkie Sense was widely regarded in Ponyville as something that you just didn’t question. Twilight had once, and that had led to no answers. “Ok, so…something good is happening over at their table.” He summarized.
“Yep!”
“Here in the diner.”
“Precisely!”
“And nothing bad is happening?”
“Not at all. Not until Wednesday.”
Joe summed it into his head before coming to his own rational, scientific conclusion. “So what you’re saying is, is that they’re enjoying themselves in the diner, in their own company, and nothing bad is going on.” He said, getting a nod from Pinkie. “Well, in that case; I’m going to fix up some more donuts.” The brown-maned stallion got up and shook his head as Pinkie remained in her same position, squatted down with her bodacious butt pressed into her heels as she remained on watch. “Let me know if something happens.” He added, patting her on the back before going back to work. Pinkie didn’t reply, making Joe chuckle at her odd ways. But he loved her for that, no matter how strange it seemed.
It wasn’t until after Rumble came and got his order that Pinkie moved, but Joe was bypassed as she instead went over to the trio of mares who watched Rumble leave before talking amongst each other again. Keeping a partial eye on his marefriend, Joe figured he would find out soon enough just what was going on in Pinkie’s mind. When they got their break and moved to a small booth, he finally got his answer.
“Scootaloo has a crush on Rumble.” She replied cheerily, making Joe cough into his coffee mug at the unexpected reply.
“On Rumble?” he asked when his throat stopped being irritated. “What makes you say that?”
“Weelllll…” Pinkie drawled out before speaking quickly enough that Joe pondered if she got the coffee he tried to keep out of her hands sometimes. “When I asked what they were talking about, Applebloom tried to cover for Scootaloo, saying it was about classwork. But they haven’t had class in a week for the holidays. So Sweetie tried to add on by saying it was a group project with Rumble, but then Scootaloo looked to the side when she said his name. If she’d kept watching, I would have doubted it. But then her cheeks started going all strawberry like if she ate a bunch of strawberries. But she didn’t have any strawberries. Unless she ordered some which I’m not sure if she did but I don’t remember her getting any. Maybe we should get her some?”
“Pinkie!” Joe called, chuckling at her energy. When he had her attention out of pondering about the stock of strawberry sweets, he continued. “Did Scootaloo ever actually say anything about Rumble?”
“Well, no, not quite. But…” she looked around. “You gotta keep this a secret. Like, super-duper secret.” She whispered as she leaned in closer.
“I’m pretty good at keeping things secret, Pinkie. Like Celestia’s favorite sweet flavor.” At her curious look, he held up a finger. “Trade secret. But go on.” He scooted forward and leaned in.
Pinkie gave another check about them before speaking. “I can feel the happiness of others.” She murmured. “When they’re really happy about something, or somepony, I get this warm feeling right in my chest next to my heart.” She brought a hand up to her generous bosom and held it there with a soft smile. “I felt it when I spoke to her.”
Now, Joe wasn’t one who ignored magical things. Ponyville and Equestria itself was a curious place filled with many strange and unique abilities. Him being a unicorn himself was testament of that; you know magic just by having it in you. Concerning Pinkie, he knew she had her own brand of magic inside her, even if she was an Earth pony. It came with the territory of her being one of the guardians and wielders of an Element of Harmony. “So you can feel others’ happiness?” he asked for clarity. At her nod, he pressed on. “How does it work?”
“I really don’t know sometimes.” Pinkie admitted, which was a surprise. She looked down at her mug as she spoke. “I think it’s to do with my element. I’ve just always been able to tell when somepony’s happy. It’s really easy to pick up from little ones, because they’re always so easy to make happy. I can feel it among my friends too, when we all spend time together.” She explained. “It’s just this…warmth. It doesn’t go away easy either. It’s part of why I’m sometimes so energetic. The ponies around me give me energy to keep going.” A thought crossed her mind and she let go of her mug with one hand to find Joe’s free own, making him blink and look to it before looking back up to her sparkling blue eyes. “I felt it a whole bunch when we got together.”
Joe’s cheeks warmed and he smiled. “It’s pretty hard to not be happy when you got a beautiful gal like you smiling at me like that.”
Pinkie’s face darkened and she looked to the side shyly. “You sweetie you. You always say that.” She murmured quietly before looking back up to him, keeping hold of his hand. “And see, right here…” she sat down her mug and pointed an index finger at her chest, causing Joe to look down and stare momentarily at the bountiful hills atop her front. “Whether it’s when you say things like that, or smile at me, or even just be with me…I feel all kinds of warm. I like feeling like that. It’s sometimes why I act so silly, or try to always have fun or make things fun. Does that make sense?” She asked, looking back up to him.
Joe met her gaze and smiled reassuringly. “Makes sense to me, Pinkie.” He replied. “So then; if you felt that from Scootaloo when she thought about Rumble, it’s a safe bet that she likes him?”
“Yessiree!” Pinkie exclaimed, thankful her coltfriend understood. He always was open-minded when it came to things like this. “Maybe we can help them get together?” He blinked and looked over to her, unsure if he heard her correctly. “It would be so fun!”
“Pinkie, I don’t know if you and I could really be matchmakers for those two.” Joe replied, raising an eyebrow at his marefriend’s idea. “I don’t know the first thing about romance.”
Pinkie scoffed. “Says the stallion that somehow picked out my favorite color rocks for a rock necklace he got my sister to make without asking me about it at all. Not even Twilight knows it, and she knows it all! Literally! She even told me the actual chemical composition for fun once!” the pink-maned pony protested.
Donut Joe only chuckled and shook his head. “Ok, so suppose we were to try and play matchmaker for them both. How do we know if Rumble likes her back? The whole point of matchmaking is to do it without the two ponies we’re matching knowing we’re doing that.” Joe stated as he leaned back in his seat and brought a hand to his chin.
“Oh, leave it to me, I’ll handle that.” Pinkie assured, waving with her hand as if dashing away the question. “I have little spies all over the town. I’m sure I can find proof that Rumble likes her!”
Joe sipped at his coffee before sitting the mug down. “Applebloom and Sweetie Belle?”
Pinkie blinked before smiling sheepishly. “Ok, so maybe those two told me that they know Rumble likes her too.” She admitted.
“Oh, yes. Two of the Cutie Mark Crusaders are helping us pair together one of their own with an innocent bystander. I can see the impending mobs already.” Joe said dryly, smirking to himself.
“I know, right? It’s gonna work so well, everypony will be in the mood to help us out!” Pinkie exclaimed, making Joe blink as he realized his statement had been completely misunderstood. "And then we can run a romance business! We could call it…Sweethearts! And sell candy dishes for every couple that we help!” Pinkie blinked as Joe shook in his seat, missing the laughter he was hiding in his coffee mug before he looked up at her.
“Pinkie…you’re too sweet for your own good sometimes. You know that?” Joe remarked before finishing off his coffee. “Alright. We’ll see if they like each other enough to push them together. But nothing dramatic! That means no magic, no potions, none of those shenanigans, ok?” he pointed out.
Pinkie raised her hand and held it to her chest. “Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye!” she recited.

And so it went from there. Pinkie had a new holiday quest and Joe helped her along. Of course, by helping, Joe kept her from going over the bar in her attempts to get Rumble and Scootaloo together. Now, that wasn’t to say that he didn’t believe Pinkie didn’t know what she was doing. She was the genius behind the jelly-chocolate-sugar stuffed donut, after all. For all her silly ways and seeming overly exuberant behavior, there sat the mind of a brilliant pony…if perhaps slightly addled by intense magical power granted from one of the most powerful magical elements in existence that could alter physical reality if so desired.
But who pays attention to details like that?
The first attempt Pinkie made to try and get the pair together was through a snowball fight contest. Did many ponies ask how she got it to snow ahead of schedule? Yes, they did. Did they get an accurate answer of just how it snowed early? Nopony knew for sure, especially not the rainbow-maned mare who took a nap on her shift while watching over said clouds. Scootaloo and Rumble were paired up together for the 2-man team course, with Pinkie hoping that the success of overcoming the intense competition would make a good link between the two.
It was on this same day that Pinkie realized she had forgotten that Applejack and Applebloom had teamed up together also, and was last year’s snowball fight contest winners. Needless to say, Rumble and Scootaloo wound up being quite the model snowponies, right down to their snow-covered noses while AJ and Applebloom high-fived in victory. They all laughed it off, even Pinkie, until she remembered what she had been scheming, which caused her to fall off the roof she’d been spectating/spying from.
Thus, she tried a more elaborate approach, and one more into her own field. Setting up the ruse of needing an extra hand in the bakery (with a cleverly timed mess created by the duo of Pound and Pumpkin), Pinkie had Scootaloo be the one to aid her. Thinking she might get a cutie mark in the field of sweets making, the pegasus happily agreed. In retrospect, it may have had to do with a fantasy of making the best sweet possible in tribute to Rainbow Dash.
With that set up, phase two of Pinkie’s plan was enacted. Inviting much of Ponyville for a Hearth’s Warming Sugary Sweets Special Sale, the party pony managed to time it right that Rumble would be free to ask for an order of delicious treats that Scootaloo would make, as Pinkie would happen to be busy with an order herself at the time. With their whole attention on the other, surely Rumble’s heart would be ensnared by the sugary efforts of Scootaloo’s cooking! It was the perfect plan!
Until Scootaloo managed to catch the oven on fire while making muffins.
After putting out the fire and cleaning the mess, Pinkie found that while the main plan had failed, both Rumble and Scootaloo had at least chosen to spend time together once the pegasus mare was let go. Fortunately, Pinkie had a spare oven ready to replace the burned one. She learned that lesson when she first tried to make a giant vat of fondue for a Hearts and Hooves Day order, which wound up setting the bakery back financially. Using up the entire chocolate supply and over-estimating the ingredients was likely the early warning signs for that disaster.
Donut Joe trudged on down through the street, eyeing another window before coming to a stop. It was a jewelry display, run by Bright Gem who was gaining a growing reputation for her inventive designs using the gems she harvested outside of town. It was once solely Rarity who had the idea to use gems from the outer rocky portions of town, but the idea soon caught on when Spike was witnessed carting in several batches of gems. Eyeing the price tags, Joe found little success in finding a balance between cost and quality. What looked great was too much, and what cost little would really be worn little likewise.
“Well, I don’t want to be cliché and buy jewelry again…the only time she talked about anything like it was the rock necklaces her sister Maud made for her.” He muttered to himself. “Maybe a ring?” He pondered before stopping himself. “Whoa, Joe. Let’s get you a better place first. Then we’ll go down that road.” Looking ahead, there still remained a grand number of stores to shop through. Joe sighed and ran a hand through his mane. His eyes scanned about for his next stop when they came upon a certain grey pegasus peering into a nearby store across the street. “Rumble!”
The teen gave a start and looked about. “I didn’t cause any fire for the last time!” he called out before seeing Joe and pausing before straightening. “Oh…hey Joe!” he said, trying to pretend he hadn’t just freaked out. The brown-maned stallion shook his head and came over to him.
“Doing some holiday shopping? And here I thought all your money went to buying those terrible éclairs for Thunderlane.” He asked when he reached Rumble.
“Egh. Don’t remind me of those things. They were awful. Not your doing, you know, just not my kind of thing.” Rumble added when Joe raised a humored eyebrow. They both glanced at the display; it was an athletic-wear store, featuring a full-on track suit themed for the Wonderbolts, right down to the wing flaps allegedly measured off of Spitfire’s own measurements. “I’m just browsing around.”
“Uh-huh.” Joe grunted as he kept his hands in his pockets and out of the chilly breeze in that cloudy afternoon day. “I’m shopping for Pinkie, myself. Never can quite figure out just what she’d like.”
“A personal chocolate fountain?” Rumble threw out. Joe paused and thought on the idea.
“If Discord gave her an infinite supply, maybe.” He remarked with a snort. “But we’d never see it. She wouldn’t let it see the light of day.”
Rumble chuckled along with Joe and the pair fell into quiet. “Hey, Joe?” The older stallion glanced over at the younger. “You and Pinkie really like each other, right?”
“I’d figure so, aye. Why else would I be out in the freezing cold instead of at home with the fireplace and the TV on?” Joe joked, making Rumble laugh again. “Why do you ask?”
The question made the youth pause, and Joe considered letting it go for the sake of peace of mind, yet he spoke up. “I just…nah, you’ll think it’s stupid, like Thunder does.” He started, only to look away with a frown.
“Hey, now. I come from Canterlot way; I figure there’s a lot more stupid up there than down here.” Joe replied, patting Rumble on the back. His wings gave a start from the tap and he looked back to the older stallion. “What’s stupid?”
“…I want to buy something for a girl I like. But…I’m worried. I really like her, but I don’t want to mess it up, you know?” Rumble tried to explain, framing his words as they came to him. “We’ve known each other for a while. We go way back, just as kids. You know, tag and hide and seek, all that stuff.”
“Good old fashioned times.” Joe noted, but refrained from commenting further. He turned and started to walk, Rumble following and speaking with the thought of shopping far from his mind now.
“But we moved along and grew up and now…Tartarus, Joe, she’s great. To me, she’s got a lot going for her, even with a rough time growing up. She had friends, like me. But now, she’s got this fire about her I just love seeing. A lot of the guys aim for the real pretty types, but she’s got something they don’t. She’s got spunk. Like if you tell her an idea, she’s not gonna sugarcoat it if it’s bad or good. I like that about her. Sometimes, I just watch her and I have to make myself look away or I’ll just lose it.” He explained.
Joe pondered for a moment if he should point out he knew he was talking about Scootaloo. But that’d be jumping the gun a little. “So why don’t you tell her you like her? Especially if you get along so well.”
“But what if telling her makes her not like me anymore? If she rejected me, I’d be crushed. She’s the perfect girl for me. I don’t want to lose her.” Rumble questioned.
“That’s a fair point and all. But on that same idea, you’ll lose her if you don’t do anything about it.” Joe said, making a look of surprise cross Rumble’s expression. “That’s part of why you gotta go for it, even if you burn out. If you don’t try, somepony else will if she’s as great as you say she is.” Joe paused when they came up to a bench, and sat down, Rumble listening intently. The chill winds had eased by this point, and Luna’s moon was clear in the sky above, stars dotted around it as Donut Joe talked.
“When it comes to things like this, Rumble, I’m not exactly the smartest guy. I’m no counselor or therapist or such. I’m just a guy whose seen a lot come and go. But when it comes to a gal you like, you gotta go for it even if you might flop. She’s worth it that much to you. When you look at her and you think everything’s gonna be alright, no matter if even the whole world was falling down around you. That’s somepony special.”
Rumble nodded quietly and spoke quietly. “Is it like that for you and Pinkie?”
Joe took a moment to think on it, and the answer came like a flash. An unbidden smile crossed his face as he spoke. “Without a doubt. She’s gotta be the best thing that’s happened to me. You never know real happiness till you wake up in the morning, tired from a long day’s work before, thinking that you gotta do it all over again. And then there she is; she’s smiling that big ol smile, like I’d told her we were having free chocolate cakes all day. And she’s smiling like that because of little ol me. And then I can do it all again, because she makes it all worth it.” Joe finished speaking and looked over at Rumble, who looked to be surprised at the simple, yet effective answer. “Does that make sense?”
“Yeah. Though I don’t know how a donut maker got to be so poetic. You sure you’re the Donut Joe I know?” The younger said with a smirk.
“Wise guy, huh? I’ll keep that in mind the next time we have Sunday Sundaes.” He chastised, only to smirk as Rumble pleaded for forgiveness. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding!”
“Oh, thank Celestia. You know that’s too scary a threat.” Rumble said before standing up. “Alright, I gotta go on. I think I know what to get Sc-I mean, her, now.” He caught himself, though he felt his cheeks warm as Joe smirked at him. “Thanks, Joe. I’ll see you around!” He called before running off down the street.
Donut Joe watched him go before shaking his head, smiling. Talking to Rumble had cleared some of the fog out of his mind on shopping, and he settled on just the thing to get his marefriend. “I just hope they have enough time to make it.” He said before walking down a side street to reach the store he had in mind.

At a similar such time, unknown to Joe and Rumble, Pinkie Pie herself was working mental gymnastics as she tried to settle on a proper holiday gift for her coltfriend. She had been thoroughly distracted of late with her attempts to pair off Rumble and Scootaloo together, and the time put into both – while fun and enjoyable for all even at the cost of an oven – meant she had that much less time to figure out her present. But just what could she give?
It wasn’t as easy picking out a gift like it was for much of Ponyville. The ironic thing about having a town filled with ponies that have a specialty for a job or task means their gifts tend to be in the same area. Books for Twilight, who loves to read; athletic gear or equipment for Dash to improve her flying; even Rarity was an easy pick, something fashionable yet modern and chic.
But Joe…she sighed and blew a batch of bubbles through her straw into her now thoroughly liquid smoothie. There were few ponies in the eatery at the moment, most busy at home or out shopping. The café had a quiet air about it, which was good for her; it meant no distractions in letting her mind try to pin down on what to give to her special somepony. She smiled at the thought; not just two seasons ago, she’d been pondering if she’d be alone without a companion. Yet here she was; happily fulfilled in a relationship with easily the sweetest stallion she could find. Well, short of a stallion made of candy and sugar. But if one came around, it’d be a close competition!
She was drawn from her thoughts when she realized there was a shadow hovering over her table. Looking up, the party pony smiled as Scootaloo gave a small wave. “Hey, Pinkie. Mind if I join you here?” she asked. She must’ve just come from outside, Pinkie deduced; her cheeks were flushed despite the scarf and snowcap atop her head.
“Sure! I was just thinking to little ol’ me.” She answered. Scootaloo smiled and slid into the opposing seat across from Pinkie. Expecting Pinkie to talk her ear off, Scootaloo was instead surprised when she didn’t hear a peep out of the busty pink mare. Blinking and looking up from her lap, she was confused to see Pinkie staring at her smoothie with an intense look.
“Uh…Pinkie?”
“Hmm?”
“Is there something…wrong with your smoothie?” Scootaloo asked, slightly perplexed.
“Nope! It tastes great!” She remarked, yet the straw remained at rest and not in her lips.
“So why are you staring at it like it’s a math question from Twilight?”
Pinkie finally gave up and sighed, lowering her head to the table with a small thud. “Because I can’t decide on Joe’s gift!” she let out when she looked up.
The purple-maned pegasus snickered at her fellow pony’s frustration. “He can’t be that hard to figure out? I mean, you two both like sweets. So why not something like that?”
“I know, but I can’t settle on what it’d be! Joe likes a whoooole bunch of things, and I don’t want to give him one when another might surprise him even more! Or it could be not even sweets, something else! Like…cologne! Or a tie! Or maybe a tie that sprays cologne so he always smells nice! But Joe always smells like cinnamon and sugar, which isn’t cologne really.”
Scootaloo felt like she needed to cut her off before she went into a wild tangent as Pinkie often did. Otherwise, she’d never hear the end of it. “Well, what if it doesn’t have to be a thing? It sounds like you’ve been looking through too many ads and not just thinking of what he likes.”
Pinkie paused and blinked over at the mare across from her. “Well, what would you do?”
Scootaloo blinked as the figurative spotlight was put on her, and rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. “Well, if I had a special somepony…” she trailed off, keeping herself from drifting into thoughts that had been occurring more often of late of a certain stallion she’d seen about. “…I-I would want to give them something they know is from me. Like, that they know only I’d know or have told them I could give.”
“Well, yeah, of course. I mean, who wants to give a gift to somepony that they don’t want?” Pinkie said, giggling.
Scootaloo laughed a little as well. “So why not go with that? Something he’d like that’s between you two.”
Pinkie hummed and nodded, putting the thought aside for the moment. “Well, what about you? Got any special someponies you’re looking out for?”
The question drew out a blush from the younger mare, who scoffed and tried to play off the question. “M-me? Nah, what’re you talking about? I’m just…helping you out, that’s all!” She replied, laughing a little too loudly for what’d be considered normal. Pinkie could tell; she was the Element for a reason.
“Really? Like really really?” Pinkie pushed.
“Yep! Totally! Just shopping for friends!”
“Really reaaaaaallly?”
“I don’t have anypony special I’m shopping for! Honest!” Scootaloo’s smile was strained as she was put under the same stare that Pinkie had been giving her smoothie earlier. “Especially nopony special! Like uh…like Rumble!” Panic overtook her and she covered her mouth. “Oh, ponyfeathers.” She swore under her breath before letting her forehead meet the table.
Pinkie Pie only giggled and shook her head, bouncy mane going to and fro. “Now, now. Aunty Pinkie already knew about that. A little birdie told her.” She remarked while Scootaloo picked herself back up.
“So Applebloom and Sweetie told, huh?”
Pinkie pouted at her. “You’re no fun! How does everypony know what names my birds are? I like those names!” she protested, making Scootaloo chuckle weakly. “So what would you get Rumble, huh, huh? Tell Aunty Pinkie!”
Scootaloo fidgeted in her seat as her cheeks burned. “I-I dunno…I came in here to try and think of something myself. I-I just…” she trailed off as the waiter brought her a drink, simple water. She gulped it down, though it did little to cool the warmth on her face. “…I want to get him something that’s right, but wouldn’t be too much. I don’t want him thinking I’m weird, or something.”
Pinkie thought about it for a moment before smiling. “Well, you just said it earlier; ‘something he’d like that’s between you two’. So why not something on those lines, silly? You don’t have to go and buy some huge giant card or have a whole parade. We’ll have that Hearts and Hooves day!” she said.
“Yeah, that sounds…Hearts and Hooves day parade?” Scootaloo asked, quirking an eyebrow.
“Nothing!” Pinkie chimed, keeping that plan under wraps for now. “So what’s something you and him could share and you could gift him?”
Scootaloo sat there quietly as she stared at her water. When she spoke up, Pinkie had to lean closer to hear properly. “…one time, when we were little, Rumble and I used to stargaze a lot. There was a school club for it. And I thought it’d be cool, so I went to one meeting one night. And Rumble was there too.” She smiled. “And that night, we got to see a comet shower. It was so wicked…to think of all these giant stars and rocks and stuff just flying and lighting up the night sky. Me and Rumble got front row seats for it.” She looked up at Pinkie to see her beaming at the youth. “…I think I know what to get. I better go find it though, before the shops close!” She got up quickly and paused to put a few bits on the table. “Thanks Pinkie!”
“Anytime, Scootaloo!” Pinkie called back to her before smiling at her smoothie and slurping at it, this time enjoying the taste. When she pulled back from the straw, her cheeks darkened as an idea came to her. “Something only he and I share…well, I only share myself with Joe…hmm…” Pinkie hummed to herself quietly before smiling, the red on her cheeks growing along with her grin.

Time flew by for those remaining days until the Hearth’s Warming Day celebrations arrived. The day itself was given a grand flourish by Celestia’s sun in combination with the weather team’s efforts: bright sunshine across a partially clouded sky, snow falling in light flows that were thick enough to remain on the ground. Where patched faded browns of grass once grew, now sat only blankets of white, adding to the festive merry mood of the town’s inhabitants. Wreaths hung above many doors, with garlands and ribbons added to provide a flourish of warm colors amidst the cool winds.
Many businesses were expectedly closed for the day of celebration, no doubt keen to partake in their own festivities for the national holiday. Even Quills and Sofas were closed, after having made a surprising surplus of sales; it seems everypony was in need of quills to write invitations and sofas to have for celebrations and perhaps post-celebrations also. Yet one business remained open, and it was serving as the hub of activity for those looking to share their festive spirits with others beyond family and close friends.
“Alright, that’s five chocolate sprinkle donuts, three caramel fudge sandwiches, and a sundae for table 20!” Pinkie declared each item as she laid them out on the table she was serving. Each of the patrons gazed at their selections with equal parts fascination and sugar-crazed delight, making the busty pink mare giggle as they took to their food with gusto. “Ponies always do like sweets more during the holidays. Oh, coming!” she exclaimed as another table waved her over, eager to get their orders in from the curly beauty.
Joe watched the smiling faces of his co-workers and customers alike with a delighted sense of satisfaction. Being the business owner, Joe took pride in seeing that his place of work could serve as a welcome place for individuals looking to celebrate together. Sure, the grown up crowds could easily go to the bars and restaurants that were open also if they wished. He didn’t serve any alcohol in his establishment; yet many customers coming in were eager purely to spend the day in a place known to welcome anypony or anything looking to have a place to celebrate the holiday.
The fact that every food and drink item was priced just one bit may also have helped convince the more tight-pursed.
For Joe, his delight was due in part also to the bubbly and radiant attitude of his marefriend. Her getup matched the spirit she exuded: her shoes, socks, and leggings were white, her shoes having red and green lacing. The leggings added to the long drink of water that was her thick, shapely legs, leading up to the puffy pink skirt that flowed and bobbed along with her motions. Her bubble-butt rear made very interesting motions that, while maintaining decency within the skirt’s confines, assured Joe that her derriere was working its magic. Trailing further up, the red button up shirt was fighting an epic struggle in containing those mammoth marshmallows of hers. Though Joe had convinced her to wear a bra while at work after three repeated incidents of losing his train of thought while watching her and working, it only added to their benefit as the swells bounced and jiggled with every laugh, every motion she made. Add this all in with her beautiful smiling expression and loose pink mane, she was like the festive spirit made alive.
“Uh, Joe?” Rosemary asked her boss, seeing him staring at his marefriend as she laughed alongside another table of customers after telling a joke.
“Yeah?” Joe replied, eyes fixated on the shaking, shimmying cotton-candy tail of Pinkie.
“We’re starting to run low on cake batter. Should we make a run to get some more from the stock storehouse soon?” Rosemary’s question wasn’t answered immediately. Pinkie Pie had ducked down to pluck up a fallen fork from under a table, causing a very interesting display of flexibility as she squatted down, which definitely had Joe’s attention.
“Sure. Go for it.” He said before his business side finally pushed his libido out of the driver’s seat for a minute. “Wait, uh…yes. Go to the storehouse, but only get enough to keep us stable. We’ll need that stock for the next couple of months.” He added, making Rosemary shake her head.
“You know, some say that having your significant other working with you can be bad business.” Rose teased as she sat down her tray. The red-headed mare adjusted her uniform, which consisted of a pair of pants and long-sleeved shirt in the same color scheme as Pinkie’s.
“Well, all those ponies can rightly snuff it.” Joe retorted, smiling as he met eyes with Pinkie, who gave him a small smile and wink before going on her way. “This is the best business I’ve had, better than Canterlot ever gave. Besides, if I’m going to work, I have to give myself an incentive. And if it happens to be a beautiful incentive, that’s just all the better for me.”
Rosemary giggled and shook her head. “And it has nothing to do with getting your marefriend in a skirt?” she questioned.
“Merely a coincidental happenstance.” Joe’s smile betrayed the casual coolness of his reply. Rosemary just giggled again and went on her way, deciding to see to the stock she needed to get while Joe kept things running, moving to stand behind the register as several customers brought up their tickets. The day proceeded from there interestingly enough, with very little trouble happening save for a spilled drink or slip on a patch of snow by the front door. Nopony complained, however; the joyous spirit of the diner kept all things light, no matter who came through the door.
Finally getting a break for them both from the busy if enjoyable work, Joe and Pinkie took to his office, the secluded room offering a bit of quiet and calm for them both as they sat down. Well, Joe sat down in a chair; Pinkie was much more content to sit herself square in Joe’s lap, her bubble butt an unexpected but certainly not unwelcome presence for the stallion. Leaning against him, she reached up with a hand and caressed his cheek as she nuzzled her own cheek against the unoccupied other. “Finally a little quiet for ourselves, huh?” Joe said softly, smiling at his marefriend as she giggled quietly.
“Only a little quiet. After all, the louder the party, the more fun some ponies have!” Pinkie replied, making Joe chuckle as he wrapped an arm around her midriff to balance her, as well as pull her closer. The action resulted with some of her cotton-candy mane brushing his face, her sweet scent making him inhale instinctively before burying his face into it moreso, which caused Pinkie to blush lightly from his affectionate yet slightly intimate enjoyment of her. “I talked to Rumble the other day. He seems pretty set on getting Scootaloo something after we talked.”
“Oh? What all did he say? Pinkie asked while Joe slowly brushed his fingers along her clothed belly. She felt her cheeks pinken as the digits danced teasingly across her; he didn’t mean to be naughty, and yet, the action only stirred her more lewd imaginations of when he did that after a long round of lovemaking with her.
“Well, we talked about this, a little about that. Maybe about how important a special somepony is to us guys. And maybe how special you are to me.” He replied, grinning up at the now red-cheeked party pony. “Since we’re alone for the moment…” Joe trailed off, reaching with his free hand to open a drawer on his desk. Pinkie looked on in curiosity from her seat as he pulled out a small wrapped box, a little larger than his hand. “I managed to get this put together for you. Go ahead, unwrap it. I thought to wait till we got home, but I figured why not now?”
Pinkie smiled at him and pecked him on the lips lightly before plucking the gift out of his hand, but not before giving a playful wiggle of her rump against his lap, making him blush but chuckle at her flirtatious actions. “I’m sure I’ll love it, Joe.” She assured as she undid the bow wrapping and tore away the green paper to reveal…
Pinkie blinked in slight surprise. The expected gifts had been jewelry, trinkets, perhaps even something one of her friends would have suggested if he’d gone so far. Yet instead, kept within a plastic packaging atop a glass platter, sat a miniature chocolate cake, complete with pink icing much like her own pink curly mane. “Wow, Joe! You snuck me a cake right under everypony’s noses!” She exclaimed as she pulled off the plastic casing. Sniffing it deeply, she detected a wondrous aroma of rich chocolate and strawberries, making her salivate slightly.
Joe’s chuckling made her pause before she could try to sample the taste of it. “There’s more to it than that, Pinkie.” He stated. That made Pinkie pause; could he have hidden a gift inside the cake itself?
“But Joe, I’m not in jail. I don’t need a nail file.” She remarked. Donut Joe only laughed and shook his head.
“I’ll let you see for yourself. Go ahead; take a bite out of it. But only a small bite.” He offered, which she gladly took. Dragging her finger through one icing-coated ridge, she used her improvised fork to slice out a portion of the cake before gulping it down in one bite. She almost jumped off of Joe; the taste was absolutely extravagant! This was almost akin to her and the Cakes’ design for the dessert contest some time ago, the Marzipan Mascarpone Meringue Madness! Every delicate roll of her tongue against the treat brought a delicious, ecstatic burst of flavor.
“Oh my sweet golly goodness!” Pinkie cried out as she turned to Joe. She kissed him deeply and spoke between smooches. “Where-did-you-find-this-amazing-wonderful-thing?”
Joe finally got a breath of air between cake and full, sensual lips to reply when she pulled back. “A friend. But the real gift is what you’re missing.” He nods at the cake in her hand and watched as Pinkie looked it over in adorable confusion. “Can you solve it?”
Pinkie hummed in thought, her tail swishing lightly against Joe’s side as she eyed the cake over. “It’s like I didn’t eat a cake slice at all…” she trailed off before comprehension dawned. But…no, that wasn’t possible. She looked back to see Joe’s smug grin. “…what kind of cake is this?”
“Oh, just a special cake for a special gal in my life.” Joe replied cheekily. Pinkie looked back from him to the cake, then back again prompting Joe to continue. “You see…I remember a certain beautiful mare telling me that one of her favorite dreams was for it to rain chocolate instead of normal rain. Now I can’t exactly ask the weather team to do that. Because then they’d want to do it all the time. So I found another solution, a more…magical one.” He said, nodding up at the horn on his head.
“I pulled a few strings, asked a few favors, and cooked a few dishes I’ve originally said I would never try again to do for sheer sake of difficulty. But the end result is that; a cake…that doesn’t expire.” Joe summarized.
“B-but…I thought that…magic and…sugary treats…” she mumbled as she tried to comprehend what Joe was telling her. “Are you saying this cake is…never going to expire?”
“Never going to expire, and self-sustaining via passive magic in the air around us. Guess how much passive magic an Element of Harmony radiates even when separated from her element piece?” The brown-maned stallion added.
Pinkie ran the math through her head. She even managed to pull in a few multiplication tables and algebra equations. The mental gymnastics made her almost drop the confectionary. “…it’s an infinite chocolate cake.” She whispered. “It’s my own, personal, infinite chocolate cake.” She sat the cake down slowly on the desk, her hand trembling slightly as the excitement of comprehension came to fruition in her mind.
“Yep. Now, granted if you eat the whole thing, it’ll cancel out the magic and render it inert so you don’t have a cake growing inside your belly, hehe.” Joe pointed out. “It has to stay on that dish stand to regenerate. But, yeah. Merry Hearth’s Warming-“ Joe was cut off as Pinkie suddenly launched herself at his face, hungrily kissing his lips as feverishly as if finding water in a desert oasis. He gladly returned the kisses as best he could, scarcely able to keep up with her energy. Her tongue stormed his mouth and attacked every bit of his mouth it could reach. She moaned into his maw before finally pulling back, panting.
“I love you. Joe, Donut Joe, I love you so much. How in Equestria did you…I-I can’t even…oh, Joe!” She leaned down and kissed him once more, her hands around the back of his neck and head. Joe pretty much ignored the fact they’d fallen to the floor in favor of the curvy pink mare currently smooching his brains into mush. His hands had moved to embrace her from around the back, one hand entangling itself in her mane while the other caressed her lower back. The kiss intensified as Pinkie’s tongue came into play again, aggressive and needing as it tangled with his, making the mare breathe quickly through her nose.
When they parted once more, a new gleam had overtaken Pinkie’s eyes. She licked her lips, the taste of him still tingling amidst the rich chocolate flavor. “Joe?”
The stallion, panting lightly from having his tonsils cleaned by her tongue, raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, Pinks?”
