Chapter 1: Tone-Deff
A girl with long black hair ran down the science hallway, through the gym, and around the staircase to the band room. Just as she reached her destination she stopped, stood for a moment to catch her breath, and attempted to regain her composure. She gently tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear and smoothed out her gray jacket, which was decorated with a large purple treble clef. Before she had a chance to open the door, however, she heard a large “BANG” come from down the hallway. Her head jerked in the direction of the noise, her lavender eyes scanning the hall for its origin. At last around the corner appeared a girl, wearing black skinny jeans and a tight tank top. The girl had on black-rimmed purple glasses and was carrying a mess of sheet music and various electronic devices. Trailing behind the electric-blue-haired girl was a huge table-like object. Around the girl’s neck were big blue earphones connected to some unknown device in her back pocket.
Octavia rolled her eyes and ducked into the band room hastily. She had never really taken well to slackers, or messy people at all for that matter. In fact, the only thing she carried around school was a well organized music portfolio that hung over her shoulder, resting comfortably at her hip. The rest of her school stuff was either hidden away in her locker or residing in one of her classes. This caused her to never be late to a class or get stuck in the situation that other girl was in. “who was that?” Octavia suddenly felt herself thinking, as she took her seat and began unpacking her contrabass, an instrument similar to the cello. “Ive never seen her around here,” She thought, “It was so weird, that big contraption she was towing behind her as well. She almost looked like she was heading for the……” before she could finish her thought the door burst open as a chaotic blur of papers and blue hair flew into the quieting band room. Every eye turned toward the intrusion, including Octavia’s. The girl quickly dropped to the floor to collect her scatted sheet music, giving the band director a great opportunity to confront the her.
“Hi there!” The director’s sweet voice caused the girl to look up from her mess. “You must be Vinyl Scratch, the new student! From what I hear you have quite a talent.” The new girl just shrugged sheepishly and gave the director a half smile. “Oh don’t be so modest Miss. Scratch, please go on and introduce yourself, then you can show us your true forte!”
At this the girl stood up and we all finally got a good look at her. She was about 5’ 5’’ and was wearing black ripped skinny jeans and a white tank top with a large eighth note across the front. Her blue hair was wild and uncontrolled, with light and electric blue shades throughout. She still had on her glasses. Facing us now she took a deep breath and spoke “Hi everyone, my name is Vinyl. I just moved here from Manhattan with my family.”
“Tell the class what instrument you play.” The director said with a huge grin across her face.
“can I maybe show them instead?” The girl asked calmly.
The director grinned and nodded.
Vinyl Scratch then held up one finger and dashed out into the hall. The class gave each other confused glances and dumbfounded shrugs. When Vinyl returned she had the giant table in tow close behind her. She then snatched up one of the various extension plugs she had been carrying before and inserted into the nearest outlet. Suddenly the large table-like contraption hummed to life and hints of a smile became evident on her pale slim face. She raised the left side of the earphone to her ear and tilted her head. Picking up a couple records from the floor she placed two on the table and gently rested the needle on one of them. We couldn’t see what she was doing on the other side of the table, but if I had to guess I would say that she was probably amping up the sound and volume. Vinyl lifted her hands and rested them gently on each record, slowly beginning to rotate them up and down. A steady beat began to flow from the contraption, and into the musically gifted ears of everyone in the room. After a few seconds the beat began to pick up, dropping low, doubling in rhythm, and then going back up. She promptly began nodding her head to the sound of the music, grinning. As the intensity of each beat increased so did the amount of other student’s bobbing their heads. Octavia looked around at all her classmates, who were beginning to bounce to the beat. “How can all these musicians like this garbage?” she crossed her arms across her chest and raised a perfect black eyebrow. Soon the whole class, aside from Octavia, was dancing around the class and swaying to Vinyl’s beat. The director was even rocking back and forth in time to the music. During the chaos someone must’ve shut off the lights in the room because there were strobe lights and lasers emitting from within Vinyl’s buzzing table. It was a full blown party for a good 10 minutes then, suddenly, Vinyl stopped playing, shut down the lasers, and flipped on the lights. At the abrupt halt of the music the students turned to stare at the blue-haired girl at the now silent turntable.
Vinyl Scratch wiped off her forehead and regained a chilled, laid back composure. She pulled the earphone down back to her neck and shook out her hair, giving it a messy look. Stepping away from the table, she unplugged it from the outlet and wound it in a loop. She raised a hand to her face and removed the glasses. Once her eyes were visible, Octavia could tell there was something different about them, she wasn’t looking at anything in particular. It seemed like she was just staring off into space.
“Well yep, as I was saying, my name I Vinyl Scratch, I’m a DJ protégée, and I’m also fairly blind.”

Ch.2 Part 1 Chemistry 911
My Little Human: High School is Magic
Author’s Note: I’ve decided to make the second chapter into six shorter parts, so that it’s not all in one big messy clump. This story takes place during the events of the first chapter. Don’t worry the rest of the mane cast are coming very soon! Only this chapter(2) will be done in this style. The rest will include all the characters and will not focus on just one. Enjoy :)!
Chapter 2: Chemistry 911
Shy stepped into the room just as the teacher turned to close the door.
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” She uttered softly to the woman, her long, pale, pink hair flowing gently behind her.
The black woman, dressed in a black and white striped dress and a golden choker, merely smiled and said, “My dear, there is no need to apologize. I can tell for myself if a student lies.”
Blushing, Shy, made her way to her seat in the very middle of the room. All around her, other students were conversing, about parties, gossip, and sports. Letting her long hair fall slightly in the way of one of her deep teal eyes, the student opened up her Chemistry 1 textbook and began to read. Out of all her classes this semester, Chemistry was definitely her favorite. Although she preferred to learn about animals and Biology, the teacher was nice and she didn’t have to talk much or interact with other kids from her grade. This being a junior course (she had already taken biology the summer after 9th grade) there were mostly juniors and seniors.
“Alright, class,” Professor Zecora said loudly, the entire class hushed.
“Today, we are going to be studying the chemical relationship between sulfuric acid and sugar.” She raised an eyebrow and looked around the room as the entire class, aside from Shy, began to buzz with excitement.
“Ah, I see you all are aware of what will occur when these two elements are combined?” the class nodded in response. “Well, then, I trust you also know we must keep each reaction confined.”
Turning to her left she raised a small clear box for the students to see. “A box just like this has been placed on each of your tables, as are samples of each element.” Each person at every table takes a moment to look and make certain that they had the materials.
“Remember, this reaction produces intense heat as well as a toxic gas, so please be sure to keep the elements safe within the glass.” The teacher reminded the students carefully.
The class was separated into seven groups of four. Shy’s group consisted of Carter, Hector, and Bonnie, all juniors. She smiled; Bonnie was actually really nice and had been known to bring in samples of homemade candies randomly. Hector, a loud obnoxious wrestler, quickly made a grab for the box and the element samples.
“Hey!” Carter yelled at the boy, her orange hair flying around her face as she made a grab for the box, “we all need to work together.”
“No we don’t,” Hector retorted, “You girls will just screw it up!”
They began to do what looked like tug-of-war with the little clear box.
Shy was just in the middle of sinking so low in her chair that she couldn’t be seen, when a tall shadow became visible over Hector’s head.
Professor Zecora quickly reached down to snatch up the box, but before she could Hector stuck out his tongue at Carter and let go. This sent the girl flying in the opposite direction and causing her grip to slip from the clear cube. Shy lunged gracefully to try and catch the box but not before it came crashing down and hit the floor.
“I-I’m so sorry” the tall pink-haired girl breathed, her hands behind her back.
The teacher, mad now, ignored Shy and turned to Carter and Hector. “Why must you foolish children do this every time we have an experiment?”
Carter and Hector looked down at their feet sheepishly.
“Never mind,” Professor Zecora said bringing a hand to her forehead, closing her eyes, and shaking her head. “You two,” she pointed to the two embarrassed students, “Vice Principal Luna’s office. NOW!”
They both grumbled things like “Ugh” and “That’s not fair” but then did as the teacher had said.
“As for you,” she said turning to face the remaining two girls, “you can manage this on your own. But please do the steps, just as I’ve shown.” The girls nodded.
The teacher handed Shy the box and walked off irritated, but thankful that the two who had to do the experiment on their own were two of her best students. Bonnie turned to Shy and smiled, “well we should probably get started on this thing.”
After they had set up the experiment just that way Professor Zecora had showed them, they began.
“So Shy,” Bonnie turned her head toward the silent girl, “that was crazy right?”
A quite “yes” was the only response.
“I mean, really! You would think that some people could at least behave in class!” Bonnie said and shrugged, tearing open the packet of sulfuric acid.
Nodding, Shy reached across the table and opened the small clear door on the top of the box. Bonnie then poured the acid into the small clear bowl they had previously placed in the box, humming as she did so.
This next step was tricky. It accommodated the initial combining of the two elements, the most dangerous part of the activity.
“Okay ,Shy, this is it.” Bonnie grinned at Shy encouragingly. She ripped open the packet of sugar, and handed it to Shy.
“Here, you can pour in this one. I know how much you like this class.”
Shy gave the other girl a smile, “okay.”
Bonnie slowly released the hatch on the top of the box, opening the door. Being careful not to drop any of the powder, Shy gently poured it into the small bowl. Hastily, Bonnie reached for the door and sealed it shut. Both girls watched intently as the reaction began to take place.
Knowing that they were to report to Professor Zecora when the initial reaction process began, Shy quietly stood up and walked in her teacher’s direction, leaving Bonnie to observe the elements. As it turns out, Shy and Bonnie were not the first group to complete their reaction and Professor Zecora was occupied in helping another group. Shy waited patiently for the teacher to finish with this group before informing the teacher about hers.
Suddenly, from across the room, Shy heard gasps and whirled around to see what was going on. On the floor, was Bonnie eyes closed, mouth gasping.
She looked to be choking on something… but what was there to choke on? Water and food was prohibited from the class and she hadn’t been chewing gum. Just them it dawned on her.
“It’s the toxic gas from the reaction.” Shy said under her breath to no one in particular as she made her way across the room and kneeled beside Bonnie. Someone shouted for the nurse and several others sped out of the room in sure of her.
Reaching for her backpack, Shy took out her inhaler. She shook it up carefully, fear rising in her throat. She had been warned on several occasions that is was extremely dangerous for one to allow another person to use their inhaler. But that didn’t matter right now; the gas had caused Bonnie's lungs to tighten up and was now making her unable to breath.
Shy pressed the inhaler to Bonnie’s mouth and pressed the button on the top. The medication was forced it's way into the girl’s mouth, down her windpipe, and through to her lungs.
The entire class was silent, no one dared to move. Shy didn’t take a breath.
Just then Professor Zecora rushed the nurse through the door and over to Bonnie.
“Oh my goodness!” the light pink haired nurse interjected, causing Shy to briefly look away from her ailing friend. When she looked back she gasped with joy, along with the majority of the class.
Bonnie’s eyes were slowly opening, her chest gradually lifting up and down. She looked around for a moment before the nurse began to shoo away the surrounding students.
She checked Bonnie’s pulse for a moment before addressing the class. “Alright now, I need three strong boys to help me lift her up onto one of the rolling tables and other volunteer to call an ambulance. Although she is breathing now, she still remains in critical condition.”
A girl with light blue hair raised her hand and offers to call the ambulance. Shy didn’t hear anything. She just remained kneeling, where Bonnie had been lying, with an inhaler clutched in her hand.
Before being carried away on the make-shift stretcher Bonnie opened her eyes and whispered something to the boy on her right side.
The boy looked up and faced Shy, “she said that she wants to say thank you to Shy, for saving her life.”
Shy walked over to the girl on the table and caused her to smile. “Thank you Shy, you saved me. You’re a real hero.” Bonnie once again closed her blue-green eyes, and laid down her half-pink half-dark violet head. Then, she was wheeled out of the room.
Professor Zecora addressed he class. “Okay everyone. Please just clean up your tables, we will take the rest of class off and you will have no homework.”
The entire class cheered, except for Shyler.
“Shy,” Professor Zecora said, approaching the hushed girl, “what you did just then was very brave, you probably saved Bonnie’s life.”
"But, the gas. It must've leaked out from the box." Shy whispered, her eyes begining to moisten, "I should have been more careful and checked the box after it had been dropped."
The teacher put an arm around the girls shoulders and said, "Do not feel upset, as I said before, what you did saved her. It is no one's fault but mine that the box wasn't properly checked. I am very sorry Shyler."
Shy nodded and wiped underneath her eyes.
“If you need a moment, you can go to the restroom.”
“Yes, thank you.” She said at a barley audible level, and walked out of the classroom.
She stepped into the vacant bathroom and checked to make sure she was alone. She strode up to the large body-length mirror and gazed at her reflection.
Her baggy yellow sweater was hanging off one of her shoulders and her long pale pink hair was covering her face again.
She bowed her head before turning away.
“I’m no hero.”

Chapter 3 Part 1:
“Hey Dash! Wait up!” a voice called from down the hall.
Dash felt a tantalizing urge to make a bee-line for the nearest storage room, but from the sound of that voice, she had already been spotted.
The voice called again, closer this time, “Dash! Dash, hey!”

Just as she said this, a small, slender body, collided with hers. The kid stumbled backward and fell to the ground. “Oh my gosh I’m so sorry Dash! I didn’t mean to run into you I promise!” She quickly went to collect her books that had dropped when she fell.
Dash kneeled down and helped the girl pick up her books. “Don’t worry about it! Are you okay Sam?”
Sam stopped suddenly and gazed up at the older girl above her. “You- You know my name?” Dash could see her chest heaving through her orange t-shirt. She looked as if she had just run a marathon.
Dash grinned. “Well of course I do! You’re the little 7th grader that keeps trying to beat my records down at the middle school!”
“Hah, yeah!” The little girl stood up, brushing her short maroon hair back into place. “I’m not really that close though.”
“Well of course not, I’m the fastest swimmer this school’s ever had.” She laughed. Then, seeing the smaller girl’s sudden frown, added, “Oh but you’re getting a little too close to my 50 meter freestyle record. I’d better watch out!”
“Heh. I’m the best on my team!” Sam leaned in toward Dash and whispered, “Don’t tell anyone this, but I can even beat the boys!” Her tan face was totally serious.
Dash frowned. “Why shouldn’t I tell anyone that?”
“Because I don’t want to make any of them cry!” She burst out laughing.
Dash grinned and handed a few books to her “You know what Sam? You’re alright!” She ruffled her messy hair, and then added, “For a squirt.”
Sam beamed, “Scoots.” She said through giggles.
“Wha-?”
“Scoots. Most of my friends call me Scoots or Scootaloo.”
Dash cocked her rainbow- colored head to the side. “And why is that?”
“Cause when I was little, I was the fastest on the scooter.” Her smile grew. “Everyone would try and race me, but I’d always win!”
“Alright then Scoots.” It was odd, the name sort of fit in Dash’s mouth, in a way that she couldn’t quite understand. “So why are you at the high school anyway? I don’t think that you classes have let out yet, have they?”
Scoots shook her head. “No, I was at swim practice. The coach needed someone to come over here and get you, so I volunteered.”
Dash nodded, knowingly. She was the high school captain. Always had been. Even though she didn’t attend the school practices, but she had more important practices to attend. Real swimming. Her year-around competitive swim team was a top priority for the sophomore. Even though she was young, colleges all over were already looking at her for scholarships. And boy did she need one; Dash might have been the fastest in the pool, but in school, not so much.
“She said something about a new swimmer.” Scootaloo continued. “Also that you’d be excused from your next class…”
The older girl’s eyes widened as she grabbed Scootaloo by her small arm and took off down the hallway in a dead sprint.

The campus of the Ponyville Private School was immensely vast, covering about 30 acres of land, including many buildings. There were, of course, two main buildings which were the High School and the Middle School that the students visited every day. Both schools were very close to one another, sharing one large hallway connecting the two. Then there was the track, the football field, the soccer field, the lacrosse field, the gym, the student dormitories, and the swimming and diving facility.
“Dash!” the younger girl tried to free herself from the older one’s grasp.
Dash looked down, “Oh hay! Sorry kid, I just really needed to get the heck outta there.” She smiled guiltily.
At Scootaloo’s confused expression she added, “Because I have an Algebra test that I totally didn’t study for next period.”
“Oh, well that makes sense! Come on; let’s go talk to coach Misty.”
They were greeted by the thick smell of chlorine. Dash breathed it in. It was what she had become accustomed to after an entire life of practically living in the pool. She smiled, becoming more complete and feeling a growing sense of warmth throughout her.
Suddenly a tall woman with pall blue hair and a dark blue hoodie ran around the corner almost colliding with the two girls.
“Oh! Miss Dash! There you are!”
Dash glared up at the woman. “And there you are hoodie and all.” She smirked. “Say coach, why do you always wear that hoodie anyway?”
Misty whirled around to face Dash. “I’m sorry, what was that? I didn’t hear you.”
The two girls suppressed giggles. “Oh nothing, nothing coach. What did you need me for?”
The woman brushed it off. “Well you know with your friend Gilda’s leaving, we now have a spot open on the team.”
Dash cringed. “She is not my friend, and she didn’t leave, she was expelled. Good riddance I say.”
“None-the-less we have an open spot, and what do you know we have a new student!” Said Misty, as she shrugged.
Scootaloo stood beside Dash quietly. Looking down at her feet.
“Yeah and…?”
“And I need you to check him out. See if he’s good enough.”
Dash rolled her eyes. “Coach this is high school swimming. It doesn’t even…”
“It matters if you want to make it to regional’s.” She raised a thin eyebrow.
Dash breathed out a deep sigh. “I guess you’re right. We do need some new guys on the team. Even though we’re already going to win.”
The grin returned to Misty’s face, and she clapped her hands together, “Wonderful! You can come with me right now.”
“But, what about class?” Dash’s eyes widened with false concern.
Misty chuckled. “Oh don’t be silly. I can write you a pass! The team needs you now more than ever!”
“Awesome.” Dash winked at the younger girl and smiled.
Misty looked down at Scootaloo and inquired. “Now aren’t you supposed to be at practice?”
“Oh um… yes mam!” She jumped from Dash’s side and started walking over to the pool door, her eyes fixed on the elder girl.
After the girl was gone, Dash chuckled and shook her head. “Kids these days.”
"That reminds me! I need to coach the middle school practice, I'm sure you can talk to the new student on your own. He's down the hall in the warm down pool area. Why don’t you go say hello and introduce yourself?”
Dash nodded and began walking the direction of the pool, her long rainbow hair swaying as she walked.
“Oh, and one more thing.”
Dash stopped walking. “Yeah?”
“These kids," She began, "they look up to you. Be careful what you say around them.”
For the third time that day, Dash rolled her eyes. “Yeah yeah I know.”
When Misty finally walked off to follow Scootaloo, Dash breathed a sigh of relief. Then, she disappeared through the door,

Ch. 3 Part 2 Nice to Swimmeet You

Ch.3 Part 2 Nice to Swimmeet You
There were two rules that Dash always followed when in the Swimming Dome. One was to always wear shoes; athlete’s foot was nasty and painful. Second was to always, no matter what, win. This rule meant a lot of different things. For instance, she never let anyone pass her during warm-ups and she didn’t let other kids beat her during practice. The same when for meets, scrimmages, duals, and so forth. But sometimes, she took the second rule to a new level.
As she walked onto the deck of the warm-down pool, she felt a tiny twinge of nervous energy deep inside her. This was the kind of feeling she experienced before a race. That’s weird, she thought, I’ve never felt that outside of the pool. She brushed it off and continued walking.
The room wasn’t very large, big enough for a 6-lane pool used by the swimmers to warm-down after swim meets. There were a few rows of bleachers to put bags on, but other than that the pool was empty. Empty. Dash’s rose eyes scanned the deck, but she saw no one. No bags were on the bleachers, there was no sign that anyone had been there.
“Um… Hello?” she called out to the empty room, hoping the new student hadn’t gotten lost. Dash was all too familiar with trying to find people in a hurry. The issue of someone not being there before their race had happened many times, and Dash was always the one sent out to find them.
She paced around past the bleachers, towards the door. Suddenly, she heard a splash from the other end of the pool, near the stairs. Her rainbow-colored head jerked in the direction of the sound.
It was a boy. He looked to be about her age. He breathed in a deep breath of air as he broke the surface of the water.
He swam over to the latter effortlessly. Dash pursed her lips and observed the boy as he lifted himself out of the pool. His shoulder muscles flexed as he grabbed a towel close by. He knew he was being watched.
“Can I help you?” He said, his back facing the girl. “Or are you just here for the show.”
Dash jumped, her face turning scarlet. “Um no… I mean yes!”
The boy chuckled, turning around. Dash got a full view of his very impressive abs. She tried not to stare. “You must be the team captain. The coach told me you were coming.”
“If you knew I was coming, why weren’t you ready?”
“I was. You’re late. She said you would be here at 12:15.”
Dash looked down at her watch. It said ’12:30’. “Oh. Well I was busy.”
He carelessly hung the towel around his neck, his pale grey eyes watching her. “I decided to go for a swim. Swimmers do that sometimes you know.”
“Well of course I know that!” Her eyes furrowed. “But you weren’t swimming, what the hell were you just sitting there in the water for?”
“I was practicing my breath holding.” He smiled a white grin. “Helps me stay on top.”
Dash rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. I do that all the time! I don’t even need to anymore.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? How long can you hold your breath for?”
“Three and a half minutes.” Dash said with a smile, her arms crossed against her chest.
The boy’s cocky smile gave him away. “I go five minutes. Are you sure you’re the great swimmer the coach was telling me about?”
Dash’s pale face reddened. “Of course I am! I’m the best swimmer on this team!”
“For now.” He said with a sly smile.
Anger pulsed throughout her body. She felt like running over and punching him in the face. But that was the kind of stuff that
“So,” She managed to say calmly. “Who are you?”
The boy grinned, “I’m Soarin. You might’ve heard of me.”
Dash’s jaw dropped. “You mean THE Soarin’? The one who went to the Olympic trials?”
“The one and only!” He stood up straight and tall.
Her grin widened. “The same one that didn’t make it to the real Olympics?”
Soarin’s face fell. “I would’ve made it.” He muttered under his breath.
“What’s that?” She said cupping her ear in her hand and leaning in closer.
“Never mind.” He mumbled. “I have to go. Got other things I need to do.”
Dash rolled her eyes. “Yeah whatever.”
He grabbed a white t-shirt out of his back and pulled it over his head, messing up his dark, navy blue hair. Dash couldn’t help but giggle.
Soarin started walking off in the other direction, towards the door. He stopped. Dash looked up. Their eyes met.
“I…I uh… I didn’t catch your name.”
“Dash.” She said. Pointing to herself with her thumb, as she always did. Her eyes were locked on his.
He nodded. “Nice to meet you Dash. I’ll catch you later.”
“See yah.” She said quietly, her heart pounding.
And with that, he threw his bag over his shoulder and walked out.
