Breaking the rock

The rock business is a hard business. Few ponies are involved with the collecting and selling of rocks, including dear Rainbow Dash. She was a filly at the time, following her father's hoofprints. She was better at flying, but with her family's predicament she more enjoyed rock collecting. It earned a steady income and kept her muscles strong so she can try out for the Wonderbolts when she was older. She was young and really couldn't do much, as much to break the smallest rocks that needed cutting and then hauling them into her little cart. The adult ponies were more efficient; they would plow with the heaviest steel in straight lines cutting it through. It was dangerous, as a rock slide could happen, so as soon as the job was done the workers would run off with their load into town, where it was safe. Rainbow Dash was trailing behind, trying to catch her breath.

Maud was sleeping in her bed. It was peaceful and quiet on their rock farm that night, and she wanted it to stay that way. The Pie family was at the top of the farming business for rocks, which only involved moving the rocks, not breaking and selling them. The Pie farm was considered royalty, and Cloudy Quartz and Igneous Rock were the 'king and queen'. Maud was first in line, the successor of the farm, followed by Pinkie Pie and the two baby twins, Limestone and Marble Pie. Pinkie Pie was a filly who had just earned her cutie mark, and Maud was about two years older. Speaking of Pinkie Pie, said pony was on Maud's bed.

"Maud!" she whispered.

Maud opened an eye and looked up. "Pinkie, go back to sleep!" Maud was more emotional and happy in her filly years. Pinkie groaned.

"I can't!" she said. She flopped down on top of Maud. "The sky's awake, so I'm awake, so we have to play!"
