Chapter 1: Awake

A crystal pony and a dark-furred unicorn walked towards the building, the unicorn holding holding an unconscious cloaked unicorn in his magic.

“Did the boss finally catch her, Auroralight? Eclipse?” said a guard contemptuously.

“Yep. But it sure took him long enough.” The crystal pony named Auroralight said angrily. “I’m tired and hungry!”

“Let’s go get something to eat then,” said Eclipse the dark-furred unicorn, “She’s not going to wake up anytime soon.”

Eclipse walked inside, placed the cloaked pony on the bench in a cell and locked the cell door behind him. Eclipse turned and walked back out the door while chatting with Auroralight and the guard. A few minutes after they left, the pony in the cell started to stir.

The cloaked pony stretched and thought. Where am I? Who am I? Why can’t I remember anything?

She stood up and trotted over to the mirror where she took off her cloak and assessed herself critically. ”Well,” She murmured to herself, “I’m a unicorn. I have a rainbow mane. And I have silver fur everywhere else. I don’t think I’ve committed a crime. But I am stuck in a jail cell for some reason.”

She glanced around the cell and moved toward the door. When she reached the door she called out into the hallway, “Hello? Anypony there?” She waited quietly for a response. When she got none, she turned back to the cell and sat down so she could think.

“If I’m a unicorn, surely I can use magic, right?” She stood up and thought carefully about what spell to use. “I wonder if I can cast Teleport?”

She closed her eyes and began to cast a spell. When she opened her eyes, she was in the same place as before. She sighed, walked over to the sink and splashed water in her face. When she glanced at the mirror again, she jerked back, startled. She couldn’t see a reflection in the mirror! She walked to the mirror and walked back and forth in front of the mirror to make sure.

“I did cast a spell!” She said gleefully, “It was just the wrong one!”

She heard hoofbeats coming down the stairs and stood pretty much in the center of the room to see what would happen.

Eclipse glanced at the cell she was in and did a double take. He galloped over and quickly unlocked the door. He stared around the seemingly empty cell and swore loudly, “Shit! She got out again!”

Auroralight stopped rummaging in her papers to glance at him and sigh, “Well, at least he’ll believe us this time.”

The silver and rainbow unicorn paused in the doorway to the stairwell (she had snuck over there while they were distracted) to listen to their conversation.

“I swear, Auroralight, that unicorn is one tricky mare.” Said Eclipse.

“Why does the boss always insist on bringing her here!?!?” the crystal pony that was Auroralight asked angrily, “I think he just likes seeing us squirm, Eclipse.”

“I think he just doesn’t trust anyone else to keep the fact he caught Iris Chrom a secret, “said Eclipse.

“I think it’s more that no one else in this entire bloody army smart enough to keep her in.”

Iris Chrom? That must be my name, thought the pony who was, actually, Iris Chrom. Iris began to sneak along the ground floor, getting closer to the door by the minute.

“Hey Eclipse? “Asked Auroralight,”don’t you have a spell that scans for life signs?”

“Oh yeah! I forgot about that spell!”

Iris’s eyes widened and she began to trot faster as she searched for the door. Iris burst outside into a grassy field and began to run as fast as she could towards the city whose walls she could see in the distance. When Iris reached a road she stopped to get her breath back. Iris then slumped over and noticed that she was still invisible.

While Iris was uncasting the spell, a young unicorn filly was skipping down the road with a picnic basket in her magic. The filly was (As you can probably guess) startled enough, by the unicorn that appeared without warning, to drop the picnic basket and gasp in surprise and excitement.

“Oh my Luna! Did you just uncast Invisibility? That spell is so rare it isn’t even in Capricorn’s archives!” The young filly said happily, “Can you teach me?”

“Well… I suppose I could try.” Iris said, rather startled at the young filly’s sudden appearance. “But first could you tell me where I am and how to get to the nearest city?”

“Sure!” the filly said, eager to please. “You’re on the outskirts of Capricorn, the capital of Lunatone. I can lead you there. And I’m Moonbright.”

“Thank you for the information, Moonbright,” Iris said as she ruffled Moonbright’s mane.

“Can you teach me now?” The filly asked as she jumped up and down excitedly.

“I guess I can try…” Iris said uncertainly.

Moonbright listened carefully to Iris’s instructions, and so didn’t notice as somepony used their magic to drag the picnic basket away. At least, she didn’t notice until that somepony cried out in pain and terror.

“Not again!” cried Moonbright, “Those are extremely rare!”

She sprinted to the edge of the road, which sloped down to a valley, and lifted the basket back up to make sure that everything was there.

Moonbright frantically searched the pile of snakes that appeared from under it.

“Where is the Nightspeckled King Cobra?!?” Moonbright cried.

“Over here.” Called a weak voice a few feet away, which was accompanied by a young unicorn colt, with said snake coiled hissing around his neck, dragging himself to his hooves.

“My poor baby!” Cried Moonbright as she hurried over, gently lifted the cobra from the colt’s neck, and cooed gently to it.

“Hey!” The colt complained weakly, “What about me?”

Moonbright glared at the colt in response, and then went to the picnic basket and gently placed the cobra around her neck as she picked up the basket.

Iris came over the rise and said, looking pointedly at Moonbright “Can you lead me to the city now?”

“Oh! Of course!” Moonbright happily trotted up a fairly steep hill Iris hadn’t noticed before and gestured towards the (seemingly unending) capital city. “Welcome! This is Capricorn!”
