(prologue)

A long time ago..

A battle raged, a dark stallion clad in black plate armor slowly walked towards a mare in the same armor. He spoke, his voice was deep and intimidating.

“Have all the rebels been quelled like the mewing children they are.”

“Not yet my king, its hard to find them when they’re hiding within nature itself, also we may have a problem one of our lieutenants has grown soft.” The mare responds to the dark figure. A long sigh can be heard from the tall dark figure as he walks off over towards the lieutenant who is causing trouble.

The king approaches him, a mare could be heard whimpering as the lieutenant hesitates to murder her. The dark figure speaks out “Do it! show no mercy, if you show mercy then I will kill you myself.” The Stallion in his dark cloak covering him from head to hoof, his armor cracked in several spots. “I understand that sir.” he retorts as he stares at his king.

“Then why have you not killed this mare and spilled her guts all over the ground painting it like a masterpiece of art?” The tall figure asks not wanting to kill another one of his own soldiers for growing soft. “Because I see no reason for her death she has no weapons nor has anything that could stop us.” A loud sigh and groan can be heard from the king as he takes his blade and stabs her in the chest she begins sobbing even more as she looks up and says “why…”As she chokes on her own blood, then passes on. The king looks at the young stallion “This is what you need to do, since you cannot handle the simplest of tasks I shall have to get rid of your mind completely slave.” The young stallion prepares to kill his king but is entranced and put into servitude as a mindless slave along with the others in his army.

The battle was nearing its end, A few ponies got together in the center of their kingdom as they awaited to spring the trap for the evil king that came to destroy them they had their unicorn allies on standby with spells of all kinds. The pegasi waited in the clouds to get ready to ambush the king’s dragon allies. As the king came walking in his right hand lieutenant and his left hand now a mindless slave stood in front of the last resistant in the land.

“So this is the great army of ponies.” He laughs loudly as his voice echoes his right hand laughing as well as the left stood there silently as his eyes glowed blue. The lead pony came forward “You won’t have this land!”. The evil king grins softly; “Oh trust me little one I will, soldiers attack!” Before his men could engage the last of the resistance, they were overwhelmed by spells freezing most of the troops or freeing them from their eternal torment and imprisonment in their own bodies and minds. The king yelled as he was torn apart by the light of their magic as the right hand was killed along side the king while the king and right hand were being destroy they gave their powers and energy to the left hand, Mathedas; who was still alive and was about to cast a spell to Annihilate all in that very courtyard the spell begins to power up as destruction was about to be released on all of them as everypony began screaming.

...Many Centuries later

A young stallion from manehatten, popular in the rave scene, CottonVale otherwise known as D’Vtoltz, had just finished packing up from a club heading home. “Gosh that place was pumpin’ tonight!” he thought to himself. He began to slowly walk out of the club and began heading back to the hotel, as he arrived he went straight to his room. He walked in and closed the door and locked it. He puts down his stuff back into drawers and boxes as he sits down for a moment yawning a tad bit “I Feel like a shower, then hitting the hay.” During the middle of his shower he begins to think over his life he remembers his old DiscJunkies from university and realized how lonely he is now he may have achieved his dream job but he didn’t have anyone to share that glory with. Deciding maybe to hang up the headphones and retire. A quaint little town like Ponyville might just be the place. Heck theres already a popular DJ living there maybe they could hang out sometime. With that, He finishes his shower with his mind set.

He hops onto his bed and lays on his back as he puts his headphones on and begins to fall asleep listening to some tunes. In the morning as the sunlight bleeds through the shades and into his eyes he grumbles as he turns his head not wanting to wake up yet. “Celestia the sun is up too early..” He says softly into his pillow. He goes to get out of bed and falls flat on his face as he puts his hooves to cover his face “ow ow ow ow!” he shouts. He walks over to the kitchen to make himself some breakfast, as he opens up a pantry and pulls out some bread and grabs some jelly and peanut butter and sighs “Well I guess out of everything this isn’t so bad I just wish I had a fancy breakfast like all the other famous ponies, that’d be awesome.”

After finishing his breakfast he walks out of his room and locks the door then trots his way to the trainstation to buy a ticket to ponyville for later so he can have time to pack before leaving. He arrives at the station he can see all kinds of ponies who just overlook him, being a dj pony doesn’t necessarily make you well known with those who don’t enjoy going out and clubbing. He buys his ticket as he puts it into his saddlebag then goes to head back home to pack up and get ready for his train ride later that afternoon. As he makes it back to his room he begins packing what he’ll need as he begins realizing he may need help with all his suitcases and boxes. He goes to see if he can’t find anyone to help him for some bits or free music, he eventually finds somepony then gets his stuff to the trainstation and gets all his gear safely secure as he sits down seeing lots of other ponies excited to go to ponyville to visit friends or family. The train begins to take off as it the train jerks and everypony slowly moves to the sides, as the train begins to pick up speed the ride doesn’t get as bumpy as Cottonvale looks outside the window seeing trees go flying by, he looks down at the floor and closes his eyes for a moment hoping that he’ll be able to make some friends when he gets to ponyville.

The train arrives the next day early in the morning. He gets off the train and unloads his stuff onto a nearby cart he looks around, seeing the familiar town style of his hometown which made him smile. He looks at a map to see where the town hall was so he needed speak with the mayor about living there. As he began to make his way to the town hall a pink pony fully of energy began speaking sentences at lightning speed as she spoke to him “Hi whats your name? My name is pinkie pie! Would you like to be friends are you moving here, where are you from? huh tell me tell me.” She says smiling happily as she waits for his answer. “oh hi.. uhh.. yeah I guess” He said nervously “I’m Cottonvale, or you can call….” he said softly before he could continue his sentence pinkie burst back into the conversation “Are you that D’voltz pony from manehatten whos really super famous in the clubbing business and has all kinds of music? He makes his way to the mayor’s office and walks up to the secretary “Yes i’d like to speak with the mayor about moving in.” The young mare nods and goes to get the mayor and then comes back out to let cottonvale in. He walks into the room and sees a middle aged pony with glasses sitting at her desk as she smiled “Hello, please sit down i heard you’d like to talk about moving into town.” Cottonvale smiles back at how kind she was being and sat down “yes i was hoping to find a nice place to stay doesn’t need to be fancy just a good solid roof over my head, and it to be warm.” She nods and hands him a book “Heres all the available houses that we have currently you may choose from any of them that aren’t taken already.” He nods then begins to slowly go through the book, he finds all kinds of houses but settles on a two bedroom house. “I’ll take this one.” The mayor looks at the house and nods “That’ll be Eight hundred and forty seven bits.” He takes out his pouch and puts down the bits. She shows him the house and smiles “Welcome to ponyville” He smiles back “Thank you.”

He begins to unpack, putting things where he wants them to be, he hears a knock coming from the door. He goes to answer it and sees the pink pony from before but with two of her friends, an orange earth pony and a blue pegasus, The orange one had blonde hair with a cowboy hat on while the blue one had rainbow colored hair and was hovering. “Howdy there partner, heard you were moving in from pinkie here and was wondering if y’all needed some help.” The blue one speaks as she looks around “Anything the great Rainbow Dash can do for you today? I can do anything in top speed.” She says smiling showing her confidence or cockyness. After Cottonvale gets himself settled he waves goodbye to the ponies as they leave. He walks over to his chair and sits down as he breathes softly “They seem like a nice bunch.” He chuckles to himself softly “Pinkiepie I think her name was quite the energetic one, Applejack seems like a nice pony. Rainbom dush was it or Rainbow dash I have no idea i’ll have to ask for her name again but now time for bed.” He heads into the kitchen and begins to make himself some dinner before heading up to take his shower then heading back to sleep. He makes himself a quick snack then goes into the shower and slowly washes up after he steps out of the shower he slowly dries himself off as he imagines the perfect somepony he always wanted. soon after long enough Cottonvale passes out into a deep sleep.

The next morning he began to wake up, after a few stretches he begins to walk downstairs and goes to make himself some breakfast as he thinks what he is going to do today.

Meanwhile far off in an old ruined tomb an archaeologist pony finds a strange key fragment in the tomb as he looks it over some of his colleagues rush over to see what he might of found. As they all look over the fragment they wonder what its doing down here but feel a strange magic coming from the door that key fragment was in. “I wonder what's behind this door, so many secrets they had in those ancient times.” Another Archaeologist comes over to him and speaks softly “Professor is it really wise to delve into ruins like these, this place gives most of us a chilling presence.” The Professor stands there as he rubs the back of his neck with his right hoof “I know i’ve felt that as soon as we entered the ruin, something is behind this door I don’t know if its good or evil.” He ponders for a moment as he goes to walk over to his table and jots down some notes, we should deliver the key fragment to one of the princess perhaps they’d know more.”

Cottonvale begins to walk down the stairs as he yawns but notices that the lights are off. As he begins to figure out why everything was off the lights burst to life as Pinkie pie shouts “SURPRISE! WELCOME TO PONYVILLE!” other ponies join in as he falls down the stairs his eyes wide as he breathes heavily staring at the ceiling terrified at what just happend. The next morning Twilight calls all her friends to the castle all arrive except for fluttershy who is currently still sound asleep with Cottonvale. “So we have to find these two other key fragments to find what exactly?” Asks Rarity who doesn’t seem to thrilled to be spelunking into any kind of dirty place. “Oh come on Sugarcube if its important to Twilight we should do our part to help, say where is fluttershy?” Pinkie pie shrugs “Last I saw her she was with Cottonvale maybe he would know, or know something about toast.” The other mares look at pinkie as Twilight facehoofs. They approach Cottonvale’s house they knock on the door but no answer they walk in and see left overs in the living room they go upstairs and see Fluttershy and Cottonvale together in his bed holding each other lovingly, “Fluttershy?!” Rainbow Dash exclaims. As they arrive at the top of the mountain they find dead skeletons of ponies with ancient  armor as they look around they see some of them defending the door. The door was cracked open the dead corpses with spears or arrows in them. Some of the skeletons appear to have been melted off as if in life their skin was burnt off with hot magma, they go down the hall as they run into trap after trap. They approach the final room as Rainbow Dash says “Finally, meet you guys there.” She says as she flies ahead but stops in fear as a giant blade comes slicing down at her before anyone could even say a word Cottonvale comes rushing up and moves her out of the way getting the tip of his tail cut off completely. “You okay?” He asks curiously looking her over and she nods softly she has a tear running down her face “I thought i was a goner..” with that they open the door and see lots of armored ponies piled up all around them as they see one pony was taller and more built than celestia herself. Twilight spots a journal the giant pony had nearby, she opens it and looks at the latest date which was burned and slightly cut up she reads it aloud “They’ve broken through the first gate we repelled the first attack but they keep coming, they just keep coming.” Twilight flips to the next page “They’ve taken the key fragment.. I’ve failed my task to my queen, I’m sorry please forgive me my love..” Twilight puts the journal back down and looks at her friends “I guess its not here then.” Rarity speaks up “So you’re saying that we came here and Rainbow almost got hurt over nothing?” Twilight looks saddened “Yes i’m sorry Rainbow.” Rainbow Dash looks at Twilight “Its okay Cottonvale saved me.” She said as she looked over at him eyeing him specifically. Cottonvale turns a bit red but then they go walking out of the castle after looking for some extra clues to where it might have gotten to Twilight sighs heavily as they begin walking back down to ponyville they arrive and Twilight heads off to her library to try and find out what might have happened to the fort on top of the mountain. Everyone else goes home to rest, Cottonvale walks into his house as he sits down on his bed trying to figure out why Rainbow Dash looked at him so suggestively she couldn’t possibly mean... “No way.” He says to himself then goes to sleep.

They head off to find the cave. When they arrive at the cave it appears to be empty as they go inside. Looking around they begin digging with gardening tools “Find anything?” Sweetie Belle squeaks. They both reply in sync “No.” After fumbling around for awhile they find a key fragment as they look at it Sweetie Belle goes “Ooooo” Scootaloo yawns “A piece of a key how thrilling there is nothing good in this cave.” Apple Bloom looks at scootaloo “You don’t know maybe it connects to a big treasure!” Sweetie Belle nods “yeah maybe Twilight will know something about it.” They all agree as they run off giggling with the key fragment they found.

Twilight is deep in concentration as she reads through book after book trying to find where the key fragment might have been taken off to. The cutie mark crusaders burst into the room “Twilight, we found something can you please take a look at it?” They asks sweetly they make a cute smile and big eyes. Twilight doesn’t look up from her book as she responds “I’m sorry girls but i really have to find out where this one thing went off to, once i’m done i’ll take a look okay?” They sigh softly and walk off “Okay.” they all say in unison, Spike comes walking in and hands Twilight some food “Maybe you should ask for some help from other librarians?”, “No I don’t think they’d have the book..” Twilight retorts. “Spike thats it!” She says happily “The castle of the two sisters might have the book i’m looking for.” She jumps and goes flying off to that castle with spike on her back. As they arrive she finds a secret stairway, they delve deeper into the bottom reaches of the castle. Twilight looks around and finds the book she was looking for as she reads through it, she finds some entries by Star swirled the bearded ‘The old ruins of that forsaken fortress has something in it I can sense it but I don’t dare send anyone but myself into those ruins, they’re perilous filled with poisonous gas that could suffocate a pony in less than a few seconds if anyone were caught in it. There is an odd fragment of what looks like a key but it is in the clutches of a pony not one i’ve ever seen nothing but bones now with wings that look like a dragon for some odd reason. I’ll write more if anything should arise, the place shall be written down on the map where it is.’ Twilight looks around; when spike brings over the map “Here you go.” Twilight smiles “Thank you my number one assistant.” She quickly glances over the map and sees that the old fortress is up near the crystal empire to the frozen northlands; She rubs her chin with her hoof “we’ll need more than just the girls to get there, we need a small amount of guards to protect us from anything that might be out there.” She mutters to herself a bit more then flies back home with spike and goes into her castle, then sleeps.

The next day Twilight calls in her friends, Rainbow Dash brings Cottonvale along as they arrive Twilight begins her speech “Alright I’ve figured out where the key fragment got taken to. Its in a fortress north of the Crystal Empire; It will be a weeks travel in frozen temperatures unsuitable for ponies, as we make our way to the fortress. We don’t know what's out there so we’re bringing a squad of guards with to escort us to the fortress get the key fragment and then head home. Any questions?” Pinkie pie raises her hoof hopping up and down from her seat “Yes Pinkie?” Pinkie pie shouts quickly “Will there be cake or frosting or.. or.. or Ice cream?” Twilight looks at her and nearly facehoofs as she says to her “No Pinkie.” Pinkie pie gets sad but then bursts into a giant smile “I’ll pack some cupcakes and cake, see you girls at the train station.” “Pinkie wait!” Before Twilight or the others could stop her Pinkie was off to get ready for the mission. Twilight grumbles a bit and looks at them “Pack some warm clothes it's going to be quite the journey.” The others nod as they get their winter clothes.

They all meet up at the train station as the detachment of Guardsmen are awaiting them one of the guards was missing as Twilight asked the captain “I asked for eight men where is your eighth member?” The captain looks at her “Your friend asked for one of our men to carry her things she needed.” Applejack deadpans. “Rarity.” on cue Rarity smiles “hello girls sorry it took awhile.” The guardsman can be seen carrying at least what seemed like thirty suitcases as he almost falls down “Sir reporting for duty..” He says breathing heavily. The captain ordered some more men to help him as the group gets everything packed up and gets onboard the train. Rainbow Dash sitting right next to Cottonvale with Fluttershy on his other side, the train takes off heading to the Crystal Empire.

The train stops as they’ve reached their destination, Twilight gets out first as the others come out one after the other. The captain began telling his men to remain on their absolute best behavior, before Twilight can get them moving she gets a vision a young colt looks at her his eyes in the shape of dragon eyes “Please help, help me.” The little colt says before disappearing and Twilight shakes her head a bit as the others look at her. “You okay there twi?” Applejack asks the others looking worried about her as well especially the guards “Yes, just a weird vision.” She said thinking for a moment what it could be. “Lets just get moving we have a good amount of ground to cover before we get there.” The others agree as Cottonvale gets a vision of his own. A young stallion looks at him “Don’t be foolish turn back now you wish to release the tides of darkness upon all pony kind if you go for the key fragment.” The vision ends Cottonvale is shocked by this for he wasn’t a unicorn then he noticed the others stop in time also. Twilight looks at Cottonvale than the others “Did you also get visions?” They all shake their heads yes as one soldier is full of tears she begins crying “I can’t do this.” another guard walks over to her and gives her a hug “Its just a vision it's not always true.” Twilight lets the guard try to cheer her up as Pinkie pie adds in “yeah only my pinkie senses come true so don’t worry.” The guard cheers up and stands back up.

They begin walking towards the northlands as they get their winter gear on the cold weather sends chills straight to their bones, Cottonvale looks around “This place is so barren.” He says to himself as he oh most falls into a nearby crevice. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy grab him before he falls, “Thanks.” He says breathing heavily as they both smile “No worries.” They both eye each other but let it go as they reach the top of a hill and a guard points out a cave to his captain. The captain turns to Twilight “We’ll need to make a temporary camp in that cave the nights here come quick and they have such freezing temperatures you could easily freeze to death.” Twilight nods and they go into the cave two guards are on lookout while the Captain makes the fires then they sit around Cottonvale by himself trying to understand what his vision was about as Twilight walks over to him “What was in your vision. I saw a colt begging for help.” Cottonvale looks at Twilight “I saw a young stallion who warned me about releasing a tide of darkness with the key fragment.” he says softly unsure what to think Twilight nods “Then its just some odd spell to try and make all of us go crazy with greed, or fear.” She says softly and smiles “get some rest we start again at first light.” Cottonvale nods as he lays down next to the fire as Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash cuddle up with him, he falls fast asleep with both of them near him.

As the sun hasn’t even risen yet the Captain goes around waking each of the ponies “Lets go we have to get moving the sun will be up in a few minutes.” Everyone groans as they start standing up and stretching Twilight looks outside “But its still dark outside.” once she finishes her sentence the sun rises and she sighs as they start moving through the frozen wasteland. Pinkie pie speaks up “How about we sing a song to pass the time?” She says smiling as one of the guards scouts ahead. He walks up to his commander “Are we on the right track i can see nothing up ahead.” The captain looks at the Guard “Trust me were on the right way the map says so.” The guard nods, then returns to his post. Applejack responds to Pinkie pie “Pinkie i don’t think singing would be a good idea.” Pinkie pie giggles “Why not? it’d cheer everyone up and keep us motivated.” She says a giant smile on her face. One of the guards speaks up “Ma’am we don’t wish for you to get hurt so lets try to keep it down we don’t know what's out here.” Pinkie pie starts softly humming to herself as everypony keeps walking.They stop for a moment as the captain is unsure about the safety of the road up ahead and sends a small detachment of his own forces ahead to scout the area just in case. The small detachment comes back reporting everything is clear, the group continues their journey as the sun begins to set. The captain quickly looks for a place to set up camp he then notices a giant town and points them that direction they all go inside the town hall or what they could make out being the town hall and begin setting up a fire as two guards were on look out right next to some pyres to keep them warm.

Twilight in her dream saw the colt again he ran over to her hugging her “Please help me.. I don’t want to do it, i never wanted to.” He says tears running down his face she looks down at him “who are you? what’s wrong?” Before the young colt could answer he disappears and she is shot back by magic as a terrifying creature roars at her he was full of rage as darkness seeps and twirls around him then she wakes up frantically as her friends looked at her Cottonvale speaks up “Are you alright??” her friends tuned in as well “Twi you okay there, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Applejack asked. “I.. Its nothing just a bad dream.” She says not wanting to burden them with her nightmares they all nod, one guard comes up to the captain “Sir we found a road that leads straight to the fortress it will take less time than it appears.” The captain nods “lets move out.”

One of the guards comes running back to the main group breathing heavily “Report” the captain says to the guard “I see the fortress off in the distance looks no more than a days travel. Cottonvale looks around as Fluttershy speaks “Sounds like wolves but I had no idea they lived this far up though.” That gave everypony in the group some extra fear but eventually everypony falls asleep.

The captain speaks out commands “Spread out and search the fortress becareful of the poisonous gas.” His squad nods and moves out Twilight looks up at the main castle door as her friends and the captain were behind her. They open the door and see a bunch of dead ponies like before on top of the mountain but this time they were dead but not by any physical weapons or any damage on them as if they were killed while sleeping. Twilight looks around “Be Careful everyone.” Cottonvale and a guard along with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy go off into the west wing as Twilight the captain Applejack and Rarity go into the north wing, then Pinkie pie and 2 guards go into the east wing. “I don’t see any kind of key fragment do you?” Cottonvale asks the guard “nope i wonder if the girls found anything.” The guard says Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy walk back over “We didn’t find anything what about you two?” Cottonvale chuckles “was about to ask you.” They all sigh and move on to regroup with the others.

“Lets party!” Pinkie pie says smiling as one of the guards sighs heavily and the other guard finds nothing “nothing here.” She says softly, “Let's regroup with the others then.” Pinkie pie looks at them “we haven’t been searching that long.” One guard looks at her “well first off this is an armory so i don’t think they’d put it in here and second theres no weapons or armor.” Pinkie pie nods “Lets go then, Twilight or the others will need some cupcakes” She says smiling as the guards go with her to regroup.

“This place has horrible decor.” Applejack laughs “Yeah the whole fact that its been abandoned for a long time shouldn’t mean they can be lazy and not put up drapes.”

Rarity looks at her “are you kidding me? drapes would look horrible we need banners along side these pillars that would be a good style… You’re messing with me aren’t you.’ Applejack looks at her “I’d be lying if I said no.” Before they could fight Twilight finds a door leading down underneath a throne “Down here.” The captain walks forward “Allow me to go first my princess.” Twilight nods as he goes down first leading the way.

A giant room big enough to hold a dragon was laid before them, As the captain lead them forward they see dead bodies now not just skeletons littered the place they were rotting slowly some not rotting at all due to the cold their bodies perfectly preserved Rarity shivers “So icky..” Applejack looks around “Their just dead.. I hope.” Twilight looks at them “no worries we won’t be long.” The captain sees a dead pony in front of him and next to its hoof is the key fragment he kneels down and picks it up “Found your key fragment Princess.” Before he could hand it to her the dead pony near the key fragment begins to twitch then bites his leg as he shouts in pain dropping the key fragment. Twilight grabs it and goes to help him “No go!” The captain shouts as more undead ponies begin coming to life as the three of them go running off leaving the captain to his fate his screams echoing throughout the hallway. runnomg back up the stairs they run into the other groups “Run, RUN!!” Twilight says one of the guards looks back down the stairs “What of the captain?” Twilight looks at him a horrified look over her “Whos next in command?” The guard can’t believe this “That’d be Kain he is in the second group outside waiting for us.” Before he could finish they hear the sounds of hooves running across the tile down in the hallway, roars could be heard echoing. They run outside with the key fragment to find the second group but they see no sign of them a female guard shouts “Kain! kain!” the guards come walking out from the sides of buildings their heads down the female guard says “There you are brother listen something killed..” Before she could finish he raises his head as his throat was ripped off his bottom jaw missing as his eyes glowed blue staring at them. The other guards eyes glowed blue as well she screamed with tears running down her face one guard draws his weapon his magic holding the blade “Go run now! I’ll try to hold them off.” Twilight smacks the guard “You're coming with us.” she said tears in her eyes not wanting to see anypony else die on her watch. He nods as they begin running off down the road the undead ponies roar, Cottonvale turns around and sees the undead ponies can’t leave the fortress grounds “Wait they can’t chase us.” The others slow down and look back seeing they really couldn’t as the fortress begins falling apart being taken into the ground and disappears under a mountain of snow.

The now smaller group began making their way back home not stopping except at night and makes it back to the Crystal Empire. The female guard begins to break down crying over her dead brother, One of the other guards holds her in his arms “Its okay.” She cries into his chest, Twilight walks over “his name will be engraved forever along with those who were lost this I vow.” She says. The mare nodded happy with that knowing her brother would be remembered throughout history. The group makes it to the train station and begin their journey back to ponyville the guards go back to have a memorial at their barracks, while Twilight and her friends go to her castle and put the key fragment’s together “They fit perfectly.” She says softly. Cottonvale looks at it, “Still missing the last piece however.” They nod, still shaken up from what happened Cottonvale hugs Twilight “Their deaths were not your fault.” Twilight begins crying “But it was. I was the one who ordered them to help us.” She said crying more, the others come over and have a giant group hug holding each other.

After a few days of recovery for the group and memorials for the brave soldiers who were lost, Twilight sits in her castle trying to find out where the third piece would be and remembered that the Cutie mark crusaders needed something checked out so taking a break she went to find them. “No i’m telling you its a puzzle piece.” Sweetie Belle says to Scootaloo who responds “No clearly its some kind of jewel.” Apple Bloom speaks up “I agree with Sweetie Belle i mean who else would know about fashion then her, i mean her older sister and all.” Scootaloo shrugs “I guess.” Twilight walks up “Girls, what did you need me to look at?” They all smile Sweetie Belle looks at her and hands over the last key fragment “We’ve spent a long time trying to figure out what this is on our own but we have no idea.” Twilight looks at it and goes wide eye “Where did you find this key fragment??” She asks softly. The cutie mark crusaders look at each other “we found it in a cave not too far off from my family’s farm.” Apple Bloom says. Twilight nods “Can you show me?” They all nod and take her to the cave. Twilight walks in behind the Cutie mark crusaders she looks around the cave and sees where they digged it up she looks over it as Apple Bloom explains “We were trying to get our Cutie mark by being Archaeologists.” She says softly as Twilight notices there is something more and digs up more to find a hatch. “Girls go out of the cave and wait for me okay?” They all nod and walk off as Twilight drops down, she grabs a nearby torch and lights it holding it with her magic she walks down the halls she comes across a statue of a unicorn. Twilight examins it closer and noticed there was a slot in the neckpiece where the key fragment would of gone “How did it get out of that spot?” She thought outloud as a calm soothing voice speaks up “I moved it.” She whips around and sees a young stallion standing there he looked handsome to her “Who are you?” he smiles a bit “Not your enemy. I’m here to warn you of what that key fragment goes to.” She nods “The rest of the key fragments to make a key.” he nods “but its not that key you should fear its what the key goes into you should be afraid of.” Twilight looks at him confused “Why whats wrong?” He looks off as if he was being called “I want to explain but I must go.” He disappears before Twilight could stop him and looks at the key fragment then leaves going out of the hatch. She walks out of the cave and looks at the cutie mark crusaders “Stand back.” They back up and she causes the cave to cave in on itself.

Once Twilight had the third piece she walked back to the key fragments in her study and puts it together it magically seals together forming a golden key with words on it but she couldn’t read it. Later she sent the key in a letter to the professor so he could find out what is behind the door, a horrible feeling fills her up after she sends the letter but soon goes away.

A month has passed and no one has heard anything from the professor or anyone from his expedition and rumors of all of them being dead have been spread throughout equestria. Eventually Princess Twilight wanted to do something about it and took a group to the ruins. “Everyone stick together and make sure everypony is okay.” She says to her giant platoon of guardsmen. They all nod and salute her, they fan out to search for survivors they find the disgruntled mess of everypony there being dead pieces. Some cut apart while others were just gone, the group breaks off with twilight leading them down into the crypts they come across the dead professor the key on him he was running for the entrance. Twilight picks up his journal and reads the last entry “What have we done we unleashed some kind of creature it tore everyone apart I led it back into the tomb it was sealed in. But I highly doubt i’ll make it out, my wounds are too grievous.” Twilight finishes reading aloud Fluttershy and Rarity are scared as Cottonvale nods at Twilight ready for anything Twilight takes the key and goes to the main door with the others the key magically goes straight to the keyhole and the door slowly begins to slide open.

The giant door opens as shadows seep out a figure comes walking forward covered in a robe but a spiked shoulder guard could be see its eyes glowing bright blue “So more foolish ponies come to fight me huh? how long until they run out of soldiers.” The voice says in deep cold tone. “Why did you kill the professor!!?” Twilight shouts at the figure, it shifts its shoulders a tad bit and then bolts past them knocking them to their sides Cottonvale blocks its path. But the figure violently throws Cottonvale with its magic off into the wall and goes rushing off Cottonvale gets up with the help of Fluttershy and goes in pursuit of the figure. When they finally catch up they see the guardsman getting slaughtered in front of their eyes as the figure moves violently but calmly slaying each guard without any real problems. Then spreads its shadowy dragon wings and flies off into the distance. Twilight checks on the survivors “we have to alert Princess Celestia immediately.” one of the guards nods and goes to tell spike to send a letter.

A few weeks later, Fluttershy is tending to her garden’s and animals as she looks up over the everfree forest she sees a giant magical orb covering a large landscape as animals come running out of the forest frightened at what was happening and seeking Fluttershy for comfort. She runs off to town and goes straight to Twilight “Twilight what is that giant black orb?” Twilight looks over to it like every other pony. Seeing flying shadow dragons roaring as they circle the orb and attack anything that gets close to it. Twilight has spike write Celestia a letter and after a few moments Celestia teleports herself into the center of town, Celestia walks up to Twilight “Thank you for contacting me Twilight, I have instructed Luna to get Cadance and your brother.” Twilight looks at her “what made that giant black orb? and those dragons.” She says as Fluttershy ducks into cover from one of the dragon’s roars. Celestia looks at her “I have no clue.” She says a worried look on her face. Cottonvale comes rushing out of his home to see what was going on. He walks up along side the other ponies, They witness a giant explosion from inside the orb as the orb disappears sending out a black cloud that begins to spread across the lands around the everfree forest.

Later that night Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy goes to Cottonvale’s home each of them looking like they’ll hurt each other, Fluttershy knocks on the door Cottonvale says “Come in.” As both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy enter they begin arguing over who gets to be with Cottonvale. “Fluttershy you don’t have the limbo to be with him.” Rainbow Dash says “You don’t have the kind gentle touch to be with him!” She retorts Cottonvale looks at them “Girls girls, please no need to fight you both can share right?” He asks softly as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy look at each other then him and pounce him. She continues reading “After the defeat in that accursed courtyard i’ve been sealed away. I Mathedas left hand of the king, have gotten powers from the king and the right hand, before they were destroyed. My powers have grown for however long i’ve been imprisoned when I get out, death and destruction will be my instruments and whatever land my practice grounds.” Twilight goes wide eye “Thats all that is wrote.” Pinkie pie says allowed “He was sealed in here and Twilight made an oopsie” Twilight Facehoofs at Pinkie pie as the others rub their face Cottonvale speaks up “So do we kill him and stop him or?” Twilight shakes her head “He never wanted any of this to happen, I think the best course is to forgive him. Maybe turn him good like we did to discord.” Applejack looks at her “Discord had good in him this pony or whatever the hay doesn’t.” Fluttershy speaks up “But at one point you never thought Discord could be turned to good so who knows.” They all converse then get moving to be ready for the battle the next day.

The armies march towards the shadow kingdom Crystal ponies, luna’s night guard and celestias royal army march towards them Twilight and her friends along side them with the elements of harmony. The shadow ponies roar as a shadow dragon comes flying forward but celestia destroys it with her magic and the power of the sun, The shadow ponies charge forward their weapons drawn “Draw your weapons!” Celestia shouts to the troops as each soldier pulls out their weapons and get into a fence wall position with their spears. The shadow ponies kept charging anyways as some get killed by the spears breaking those spears in half. The battle begins as all the ponies clash their weapons the shadow ponies easily killing the first line of ponies but was then surprised by the second line, sword’s clashed and spears broke into each other’s opponents as a small group of shadow ponies close in on Fluttershy Cottonvale flies down, engaging them with his blade alongside Rainbow Dash Celestia shouts to the castle “Is this all you can conjure!!?” Luna despatches a group of shadow ponies herself. Eventually The shadow ponies begin to lose their power and start slowing down disappearing into nothingness as the castle exploded with a powerful spell. The armies charge into the castle only to find an abomination of pony skeletons and dragon skeletons It roars peeling off the skin of some soldiers, then breaths ice and fire onto the rest. Celestia looks at Twilight who nods and they use the elements of harmony on the giant creature destroying it completely. Once the courtyard was secure they moved into the castle itself where they found the figure sitting in a throne injured and bleed heavily his wings had looked broken the figure looked towards them “So the judgement is finally approaching is it?” The figure laughs softly as it stands up walking slowly towards them then stops looking at them Celestia stares at him “Who are you?” She asks curiously it laughs again, then speaks “I can see they did not teach their children i was the left hand of a powerful king, he slaughtered thousands just for fun.” Celestia looks a bit angry “That doesn’t answer my question.” He laughs softly “I’m unimportant you will just kill me like how it should've been so long ago.” He says, he falls to the ground unable to stand up breathing heavily. Twilight speaks “You were know as Mathedas, i read it in your tome.” Mathedas looks at them “Then you know what must be done.” he says softly. He closes his glowing blue eyes expecting his end as Twilight and the girls look at each other then shoot the elements at harmony at him but before he falls he begins roaring as the castle around them disappears back from where he was summoned.
