Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there lived three races of ponies. They were the Pegasi, Unicorns, and Earth Ponies. For many years, they shared the land they lived in, living in peace and harmony with each other.
But then, a powerful and mischievous spirit of chaos named Discord arrived. Discord was a Draconequus, which meant that his body was made of parts from all sorts of creatures. His magic was so strong that he was able to reshape Equestria into a nonsensical realm of chaos and disharmony, and install himself as ruler of all the ponies who lived there. The Pegasi, Earth Ponies, and Unicorns all suffered under Discord's rule, for none of them could adapt to the chaotic land they now lived in. It wasn't until the two regal sisters, Luna and Celestia, retrieved the Elements of Harmony, that Discord's tyranny ended. Using the power of the Elements, the 2 princesses sealed Discord into a statue, and restored harmony to Equestria.
The ponies were all very grateful, and lauded them as heroes. Under their careful guidance, the land was healed of Discord's work, and chaos was replaced by order and peace. But it wasn't until the last days of the reconstruction that the princesses would find the last, and most unusual, result of Discord's reign. High up in the shy, nestled inside a cloud, a young foal was found by Celestia. He was surrounded by a cyclone of raw magic, a relic of the chaos under Discord. After dispelling it, however, Princess Celestia found something very odd. Discord's magic wasn't just circling the foal for fun. It couldn't reach him. Somehow, the young pony had manipulated it so that it flowed endlessly around him, but could never directly affect him. Like the eye of a hurricane the magic raged around him but he himself resided in a little bubble of peace. Although surprised, Celestia had seen stranger things under Discord, and wasted no time in dispelling the swirling chaos. But when the last tendril of magic had been cast aside, the Princess saw something that gave even her pause. The foal was no ordinary pony. He was an alicorn, a pony with the wings of a Pegasus and the horn of a Unicorn. Celestia was astounded. Until then, she had thought that only Luna and herself had both the wings and the horn, an opinion shared by her equally startled sister.
Ultimately it was decided that the Princesses would raise the foal together, for in his young eyes they saw the future of Equestria looking back at them, a future that would need tending to when they inevitably could rule no longer. The foal was then named Infinite Loop, due to the remarkable circumstances under which he was found. Soon afterwards he gained a cutie mark that reflected his name. And so the years passed, and Infinite Loop grew into a promising young colt, soft in voice, tender in heart, strong in conviction. He demonstrated a particular aptitude for the concept of balance, often being called upon to resolve disputes. In his mind, everything in the world had it's counterparts, and a peaceful relationship thereof. He greatly admired the 2 princesses, seeing their joint duties of raising and lowering the sun and the moon as the ultimate expression of harmony. In recognition of his ever developing nature, he was named the Alicorn Prince of Balance. To use an analogy, if Celestia was representative of the sun, and Luna the moon, then Infinite Loop was representative of the system they both created, the ever repeating cycle of rising and falling. Indeed, one could say that he was the prince of Harmony itself, and it was his royal duty to ensure that the land of Equestria was harmonious, that all things acted in balance with everything else. So long as day followed night and spring followed winter would Equestria, and Prince Infinite, remain content.
But unfortunately, it would be this very appreciation for balance that would prove to be the wedge that would drive him and the princesses apart. One day princess Luna, bitter from witnessing the ponies of Equestria sleeping through and shunning her beautiful night, refused to lower the moon. When her elder sister confronted her, Luna declared that there could be only one princess in Equestria, and attempted to usurp power. Celestia was reluctantly forced to use the Elements of Harmony a second time, and banish her sister to the moon.
With Luna gone, she took upon herself the responsibility of raising and lowering the moon, as well as the sun. Banishing her sister filled Celestia with a great sadness, a sadness only equaled by that felt by her prince, Infinite Loop. In addition to losing one of the two mares he had come to think of as his family, the loss of harmony created by Luna's absence weighed heavily on his mind. Unable to bear it any longer, he one night left the newly built Canterlot Castle, seeking to find what peace he could in the land he had once helped rule. Knowing that so long as the two sisters remained one he could not perform his princely duties, he used his magic to hide his horn, and took refuge in the Pegasus city of Cloudsdale. He took a job at the weather factory making rainclouds, pouring into their construction the same passion he had once given to balance, and for a thousand years he remained there, hiding from the eyes of Celestia.
Over the years his discomfort turned to shame, as he began to feel that he had abandoned Celestia. Coming to the conclusion that such an action was unbefitting of a prince, he resolved to never again re-assume his old title. His thoughts never strayed from the Mare in the Moon, however, and he spent much time thinking of ways to set things right.
Then, while looking up at the moon, he was struck with a sudden realization. Princess Luna was the princess of the night, and without her the night sky was in disharmony. With the proper stimulation, the very stars would reject this imbalance, and bring back to earth their rightful ruler. Setting his eyes on the all-too-familiar silhouette on the moon's surface, Infinite Loop was resolved.
"Someday," he said, "The stars themselves will aid in your escape. And I will be there to show them the way."
