Chapter 1 - Rainbow's Chance
The sun steadily rose in the sky, rays of golden light shining down on the many bountiful fields and hills across the land. The warm sunlight shone throughout Ponyville, ponies gradually rising out of bed to greet the morning. As the minutes ticked by, the streets became busier and busier, a whole spectrum of colour in the markets as ponies of all shapes and sizes began to busy themselves with their daily tasks and chores. But what nopony expected was the sudden blur that zoomed through the streets of the town, leaving bystanders in a daze. A loud Fwoosh followed it everywhere it went and before anypony could react, the blur was gone again, a rainbow contrail the only evidence of it's existence.
Rainbow Dash didn't have time to acknowledge the beauty of the sunrise as the pegasus weaved her way through the many buildings in Ponyville. She nervously threw glances in every direction, holding a small piece of paper tightly to her chest. She doesn't start yet, right? Rainbow had already worked through her plan multiple times in her head, scrutinizing every detail. I'll never get a chance to speak to her if she's already working! Oh please, please, PLEASE tell me she isn't in the market already! Rainbow hovered high above the market stalls, a nervous trickle of sweat running down her face. She squinted her eyes, letting out a sigh of relief when she realised the apple cart hadn't arrived yet. Even so, the various small stalls were getting their first few customers of the day. The cyan mare, however, was soaring through the sky again in an instant.
As stores and houses began to disappear in the distance, Rainbow allowed herself a minute to relax, letting the chilly, morning breeze flow through her polychromatic mane. She took a deep breath as she let the gentle wind soothe her aching muscles. She'd barely had any sleep the night before, her mind a flurry of doubts and questions. It had been the early hours of the morning when she finally knew what she was going to do and she was up bright and early to make sure everything went to plan. Since Rainbow's incredible performance at the Best Young Flyers' Competition and her amazing Sonic Rainboom, the mare had spent large amounts of time fretting over her day with the Wonderbolts. Not because I'm nervous She quickly reminded herself, I'm too awesome to be nervous! But... who's awesome enough to go with me? . It was true. Ever since the official invitation came through, stating that Rainbow could bring one guest for her day with her lifelong heroes, she'd been in deep thought ever since.
Who would even be interested anyway? Would Twilight want to go? Wait, of course not! She's an egghead...why would she care about the Wonderbolts? Rainbow lay on her bed, her face shoved into a pillow. Fluttershy? No. Pinkie? No. Rarity? Oh please...she'd spend the whole day commenting on their outfits! She dropped off the bed, lifting her head up as she began trotting around the room in a similar fashion to the many upper class unicorns of Canterlot she'd seen. "Oh would you look at the tacky stitching on his suit!" She daintily pointed a hoof at the non-existent Wonderbolt in the room with her, trying her best to act like her unicorn friend. "How in Equestria can he fly in a suit like that? It's simply a crime against fashion!" Rainbow dramatically raised her hoof to her forehead as she said the last words. She continued to pace the room before exhaling slowly. Yep, that's Rarity off the list... She leapt back onto her bed, bringing a hoof to her chin. But what about Applejack? Rainbow suddenly sat up straight, like an electrical surge just went up her spine. Yeah...she's pretty athletic. I'm sure she'd enjoy it.
She eased up again as memories came flooding back to her, each bringing a warm smile to her lips. After the Iron Pony competition, Rainbow had began to realise her affections for the mare. Sure, Applejack had always been a great friend of hers. They'd both been friends ever since the Pegasus had moved to Ponyville. But after their competition, Rainbow had began to feel differently about the humble apple farmer. She was captivated by her every word, her southern accent like music to her ears. She was mesmerized by her golden mane as it shone in the sun on the orchards. Somehow, seeing Applejack's competitive side that day changed something in the pegasus. Everything about the mare gave Rainbow warm, fuzzy feelings she couldn't explain at first. But now she knew. Those warm, fuzzy feelings she got were a sign of love.
And of course her being there with me would make the day ten times as awesome! Rainbow closed her eyes as she began to daydream, settling down on her comfy, cloud bed. Just to be near her and to hear her voice...there's no-one I'd rather spend the day with. Just thinking about her beautiful green eyes, her cute freckles, I...I... Rainbow's eyes suddenly opened again as an idea crept into her mind. That's it! Maybe, just maybe, spending the day with Applejack, I might finally be able to have some quality time with her. Show her how awesome I am! Show her...how I truly feel about her. She stifled a yawn, shutting her eyes as her pillow beckoned her. But y'know...right now this pony needs her shut eye! She laid her head down, a small smile visible as she threw herself into the night's embrace and caught up on some much needed sleep.
Now here she was, the next day, making her way up to Sweet Apple Acres. As the large, red barn came into view, Rainbow's wings stubbornly refused to let her go further. Rainbow's nerves beginning to get the better of her. As more and more apple trees popped up on the horizon, Rainbow's stomach churned. What if she can't go? What if she has too much work to do on the orchards? The day wouldn't be the same without her! What if- Rainbow's train of thought dissipated back into the warm, fuzzy feelings she'd grown use to as she spotted the orange mare, steadily making her way down the track towards Ponyville. For that one moment, everything was right in the world. Rainbow quickly looked down, making sure the paper was still securely in her hooves. She took many a deep breath as she hovered in mid-air staring at the earth pony. Okay, just keep it cool Rainbow. You got this...just handing the invitation to your friend. Noooo problem hehe...

Chapter 2 - Applejack's Choice
"Are ya quite done sittin' there gigglin' like a school filly yet?" Applejack turned towards the cyan pegasus who was now sat in front of her, the mare still bearing a stupid smile on her face. "Honestly, ya come down here callin' out, sayin' ya have somethin' important to ask me, and then ya just act like this?" Applejack carefully re-adjusted her stetson as she furrowed her brow, glaring at the pegasus. Usually, she was more than happy to see her friend, but right now, Applejack wasn't in the mood for Rainbow's antics.I swear if this is another one of Rainbow's games... Applejack sighed. It is not something I need right now. Rainbow quickly snapped out of her daze as she saw Applejack change from being slightly moody to downright depressed. She quickly flew to her side.
"Are you alright, AJ? You seem a little...off this morning" Rainbow offered a hoof but Applejack merely shook her head and began checking over the old apple cart.
"Don't you worry none, Rainbow. I've just got a few things on my mind right now, but it ain't nothin' I can't handle." Despite her attempt at offering re-assuring words, Rainbow easily noticed how Applejack couldn't look her in the eye when she spoke. Worst liar in Equestria. She rolled her eyes.
"Applejack, it's pretty obvious there's more to this than you're letting on. You can tell me. Nopony else will know!" Applejack raised an eyebrow at that. Rainbow sighed. "Okay, so maybe in the past I haven't been great at keeping my mouth shut but it would be totally different this time around!" She turned Applejack's head to face her, giving her a big grin. "I just want to help!"
Applejack let out a small chuckle. Well, that's the element of loyalty for ya... she thought to herself, Tries to avoid doing an honest days work as best she can but the moment her friends are in trouble...She's right there for 'em. Applejack may have given her a lot of slack over the years for being stubborn half the time, but she had a lot of respect for the mare. Rainbow was a lot of fun to hang out with and the pegasus' confidence and bravery often rubbed off onto her friends as well. Aw shoot. Rainbow's my best friend...I'm sure gettin' things off my chest will help anyway. Applejack kicked at the dirt a little before looking at Rainbow. "Well, I guess it can't do no harm to tell ya..."
"Hey! I'm here for you through thick and thin!"
"Well, ya know- I was just thinkin' earlier...well y'know, about finding that uh, special somepony." She brought a hoof to her forehead. "Shoot. I know it's not somethin' to get all worked up about but there may come a day when I'll need to run the farm. And, y'know, havin' a pony there with me to comfort and support me...it just seems right, don't it? To be able to have a family of my own someday. It'd sure be nice to have a special somepony. I mean...life on the farm is nice and all but, it gets a little lonely, y'know?" She lifted her head up to see Rainbow gawking at her. "Oh I'm sorry sugarcube, you didn't need to hear me blabber on about my problems like that. I mean, come on, who'd even be interested in me anyway?"
Who wouldn't? Rainbow's thought continued to drift towards Applejack. How could she not have admirers? She has the body of a goddess...a goddess of all things apple! She's just so perfect. She's funny, she's kind, she's caring...she's even a strong athlete. Might even compete against my awesomeness! And those freckles! They're so adorably cute and-
"Uh, sugarcube? You alright?" It took a second for Rainbow to realise Applejack was now standing beside her on the dirt track. "You were barely movin' and you were mumblin' to yourself..." Applejack made a cautious step towards her. "...somethin' about a 'Queen Freckle-Features'?" Rainbow's face turned bright red as she struggled to find the words to respond.
"Well, sorry about that! Hehe." Rainbow rubbed a hoof behind her neck nervously. Well thanks Brain, torturing me with dreams about the perfect mare and now making me blurt things out loud...great going! Applejack loomed over her with a bemused expression on her face. Eager to change the subject, her eyes darted left and right until her gaze fell upon the small piece of paper she'd been carrying. In a flash, she swooped in and grabbed it, presenting it to Applejack. "So anyway, the main reason I came by is because my day with the Wonderbolt's is coming up and if you see here," She pointed a hoof at part of the invite. "It says I can bring a guest! So whaddya say AJ? Wanna be my plus one?"
Applejack paused for a moment, taken by surprise by how quickly Rainbow had changed the conversation. "It's a bit of a short notice sugarcube..."
"Oh come on! You work all the time. The day out will do you good!" As Applejack opened her mouth to protest, Rainbow quickly raised a hoof to silence her. "And with all this other stuff on your plate, wouldn't it be good to get away from it all, hm?" The pegasus hovered above the apple farmer. Smug knowing that she'd made a strong argument.
Applejack looked at Rainbow and then looked back at Sweet Apple Acres. "I suppose it could be fun. If we get Twilight to do her cloud-walking spell again, we shouldn't have any problems..." Applejack continued to think it over for a few minutes longer. Not before long, Applejack turned to Rainbow Dash and smiled. "Alright Rainbow. I'll meet you at your place tomorrow mornin', alright?"
"Yes!" Rainbow performed a quick flip in mid-air in celebration, quickly speeding away from the scene again, blurting out a good bye as she disappeared into the town. "Awesomecan'twaittoseeyoutomorrowkaybye!" Applejack watched her go, chuckling under her breath. She hitched herself onto the apple cart again, a slight bound in her step as she continued her journey into Ponyville. Seeing Rainbow and getting problems off her chest had made the day much easier. And she couldn't wait to enjoy a day with Rainbow watching the Wonderbolts.

Chapter 3 - A Day To Remember
"Alright who's that one then?"
"Come on you've gotta know Soarin'! Some of his tricks are legendary and he's pretty much the second in command of the main squad."
It was the late afternoon, the sun beginning it's descent in the sky. Applejack and Rainbow Dash were sitting next to each other amidst dozens of empty seats in the Wonderbolts Stadium. As Rainbow continued to answer every one of Applejack's endless questions, she replayed the events of the day in her head. Yeah, it's gone awesome so far! She thought Who knew she'd have such an interest in the Wonderbolts! It just makes her even more perfect. Rainbow's ears drooped and she looked down at the floor, a depressed sigh escaping her lips. Just wish I had the guts to tell her. Tell her everything. Come on Rainbow... She peaked another look at Applejack, who still seemed to be fascinated by the Wonderbolts as they soared through the clouds. Come on. Just tell her. You've had one of the best days of your life today and you shared it with her! Just pony up... Rainbow took a long, drawn out breath.
"Hey, uh, Applejack." The cyan mare turned to her friend.
"Sugarcube, I just wanna say that this has been a great day." Rainbow's heart melted as Applejack gave the warmest of smiles. "I can't thank you enough. Really. This was precisely what I needed."
"Well that's great! I was just going to-" Before she could continue, she was interrupted by two orange hooves around her neck as Applejack brought her into a big hug. Thoomp! Rainbow's wings sprang outwards, making her groan slightly. Wings? Please can you contain yourselves for one second?! . Despite the wings protesting, Rainbow was finally able to push them down before Applejack stopped the hug. "Look AJ. I just wanted to tell you that I-" Her mouth opened but no words came out. The pegasus' heart was racing a million miles an hour. "I-" Another try. Another fail.
"Just spit it out, Rainbow! You can tell me anything. We're friends remember?" There was a little concern in Applejack's voice, a slight frown on her face. Rainbow could feel the sweat on her forehead. Come on Rainbow! You're awesome! Just tell her and be done with it! Sadly, Rainbow's mind didn't have much control over her words.
"I was just wondering..." She shut her eyes, her whole body a nervous wreck. "...if we should maybe get some food now. I don't know about you but I'm starving!" Damnit, you idiot! Why'd you say that? Tell her that you love her! "In fact, I know a great place nearby anyway!" She tried to offer a sincere smile as her infuriated mind continued to shout at her.
"That sounds like a great idea, sugarcube." Applejack jumped off the seat and began to trot out of the stadium. As soon as Rainbow was sure she was out of earshot, she let out a huge sigh and collapsed on the ground. She repeatedly hit her head with her hoof. Great job, Rainbow! Once again proving you're the best mare out there when it comes to love! She lay on the ground for a little while longer before hanging her head in defeat and flying over to Applejack.
The two mares trotted casually from the towering stadium towards a jumble of buildings in the distance, one being in particularly higher spirits than the other. Rainbow trailed slightly behind the farmer, still beating herself up about everything. "So which one are we headin' to?" Applejack turned to Rainbow, pointing her hoof towards some of the buildings in front of them. "Watchin' all them fancy flyin' pegasi works up quite an appetite!" Rainbow took the lead and, with something reminiscent of enthusiasm, led them to their destination.
They stepped into the lavishly decorated building, a sweet aroma in the air. Applejack took a deep breath, inhaling all the smells of the fresh food. "Gotta admit, Rainbow. It's a pretty nice place." She gave Rainbow a friendly nudge. "How'd you find this place, then? Brought any potential coltfriends here, hm?" Applejack chuckled as Rainbow began to blush before she began surveying the room, searching for a free table. Yeah...tons of coltfriends. Totally. She cautiously stepped into the room and sat down opposite Applejack at a nearby table.
"Seriously though, sugarcube. I didn't take you for the type that would go to a place like this." Applejack said as she fidgeted about on her seat, trying to get more comfortable.
"Yeah, well I wouldn't expect you to be the type that would go to a place this." Rainbow laughed softly.
Applejack smiled in return. "Yeah alright, I guess we're even." She picked up the menu in her hoof, scanning the different meals available. "Then again, this day has been full of surprises."
Rainbow looked up from her hooves, a quizzical look on her face. "Oh?"
Placing the menu back down on the table, Applejack put her hooves on top of it. "I might as well confess. I wasn't too sure about comin' today at first considerin' I've never really been interested in the Wonderbolts and all"
Rainbow sighed. "Well what was the point in coming then?"
Applejack shifted a bit, rubbing her hooves together. "I suppose that I saw how excited you were for it all. I thought that if it made you happy, then everything would be worth it.
A lot of heat was rushing to Rainbow's face, her cyan coat turning a warm red in response. "Aw come on AJ. You don't really mean that..."
"I do. Honestly." Applejack leaned in closer to Rainbow. "Rainbow, since...well, as long as I can remember you've always been there for me. I wouldn't want anyone else for a best friend. You're truly an amazin' pony."
Rainbow was practically curled up in a ball on her seat, attempting to hide the rapidly increasing blush all over her face. Applejack merely laughed at the sight. You're the amazing one, AJ...if only you knew...
Their conversation was ended abruptly when the entrance of four ponies turned everyone's heads. Standing in the doorway were a group of pegasi, their signature streamline blue suits contrasting against the deep purple wallpaper. Rainbow gazed at them with a somewhat disinterested expression as they were swarmed by ponies with cameras, flashes filling the dimly-lit room with light. "This place is where some of the Wonderbolts chill out after training. It was the main reason I started coming here since I was a filly." She turned to look at Applejack who's gaze was firmly on the fourth Wonderbolt, her mouth agape.
"Who is that?" She asked, her eyes never leaving the young stallion as he followed Spitfire deeper into the building.
"What, Cloudjumper? Some newbie fresh out of the academy. Spitfire seems to have taken a shine to him it seems." She looked up at the brown pegasus pony, bringing a hoof to her chin thoughtfully. "Not sure why though. I mean sure he's got good moves but so have all the others. Anyway, what's with the sudden interest in him?" She tilted her head back to the table. Applejack was sitting on her seat, slowly running a hoof through her golden mane, a distant expression on her face.
"Oh no reason...no reason at all."

Chapter 4 - ...For All The Wrong Reasons
It wasn't long before they began to tuck in to their food, both ponies choosing a simple salad instead of the more extravagant delicacies on offer. Especially after seeing the price. Rainbow was happily munching away when she noticed Applejack's almost full plate. She stopped chewing her current mouthful, frowning slightly at the orange mare. What's up with her? she was cautious about asking, noting how Applejack looked like she was in another world. Applejack sat unblinking, smiling at seemingly nothing as she continued to stroke her mane. Rainbow gulped. "Applejack?" No response. "Applejack?" The mare continued to sit in a dream-like state. "Applejack!" She eventually shouted, turning more than a few heads in the restaurant.
Applejack turned her head sharply as she was snapped back into reality. "Oh, sorry Rainbow. What were you sayin'?"
Rainbow couldn't help but sigh. "Applejack, you've been daydreaming for about five minutes. You said you were hungry and yet-" She gestured towards the uneaten salad. "-You've barely had a bite of your food. Are you alright?"
"Don't worry Rainbow I'm fine." She brought her plate closer in, taking a few bites out of the salad. Her eyes opened wide as an idea crossed her mind. "You don't think I might be able to talk to Spitfire and the others down in the VIP section?" Rainbow gave her a confused glance in response. "It's just that I have quite a few questions about their...routines and stuff, y'know."
"I suppose, considering we are their guests for the day." Rainbow was still quite surprised by Applejack's sudden interest in the subject. "I wouldn't see why it might be a problem." With that, Applejack quickly got off her seat, hastily making her way towards the stairs to the lower tables. "Where are you going? You've still barely eaten anything!"
Applejack just smiled back. "I'll only be a minute, Rainbow!" She replied, eagerly making her way downwards.
Rainbow sat there for five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. She watched as ponies began shuffling out of the building, empty plates littering the tables. She looked down at her plate and then looked at Applejack's. Where's she gotten to? She rested her head back against the seat. To be honest, I wouldn't blame her if she's bailed. I'm so lame. I mean, just look at me! She gesticulated wildly with her hooves Claiming to be the most awesome pony in Equestria, failing to ask the mare I love out on a date. She sniffed, a single tear rolling down her cheek. Stupid...heart stuff. Why is love so hard? It was then that the pegasus thought of something, her frown becoming a small smile. Maybe I've just been taking the wrong approach. If I can get a gift or something, telling her will be easier! Yeah, just like in the movies!
Rainbow was out in the cool, crisp air of the evening in a flash. Dozens of ponies trotted through the lamp-lit streets, the ghostly white glow of the moonlight shining on the rooftops of the buildings. The night life of Cloudsdale was a big contrast to the calm, relaxing atmosphere present during the day. Club music echoed through the air as Rainbow slowly flew down to a small corner shop at the end of the street. She quietly lifted a hoof to the door, swiftly turning her head. She wanted to make sure nopony saw her. With a deep breath, she opened the door and entered the dimly lit shop, a powerful yet soothing fragrance overwhelming her. She felt her tense muscles instantly relax as she walked up to the counter. An old mare stood behind the counter, dozens of wrinkles on her face a clear sign of her age. Her old limbs creaked as she stepped up to serve Rainbow.
"Well good evening to you, young miss! Welcome to my little corner shop of love!" She beamed at Rainbow. "We have all the perfect gifts for your special somepony, no matter what the occasion. So, what can I help you with?"
Rainbow nervously shuffled a bit on the floor. "Well, you may know better than me what I need right now." She said. "I'm sorta looking for a present to give to somepony. But I mean, it can't be all luvvy-duvvy all right? They don't exactly know I have...feelings towards them, if you catch my drift"
The old shop-owner gave a small nod, lifting a hoof in the air. "I know just what you need then." She gradually moved over to a small stand in the centre of the room where an array of flowers were laid out in a neat display. "A small bunch of flowers is a wonderful little gift. A few orchids and tulips...oh yes! I can make this work very well!" She quickly got to work, carefully cutting some of the flowers before wrapping up neatly in a beautiful bouquet. "Believe me my dear. Any stallion would love them! With any luck, you two will be together in no time! As I've always said, the right gift can change a ponies heart!"
Sure. Stallions. Rainbow gratefully took the flowers, leaving some bits on the counter, before heading back to the restaurant. On arrival, she noticed how the entire place seemed deserted with not a soul in sight. Her ears perked up to the sound of music however, emanating from the VIP section. Praying Applejack was still down there, Rainbow quickly headed to the stairs clutching onto the flowers tightly. As she continued to descend further, it was apparent that the atmosphere was very different down there. While small, the room seemed to be bursting with life. Flashing neon lights darted across the room to the sound of the beat. Ponies were laughing and cheering all around, many dancing on their seats or running around the place. It took a while for Rainbow to pick out the farmer through the crowds, her familiar brown Stetson hat being the only real clue. She forced her way through the other ponies, having to take a breath of air as she came into the clearing where Applejack was talking with the Wonderbolts. Or rather, a Wonderbolt.
On seeing Rainbow, she bounded over. "Oh Rainbow, there ya are!" She said gleefully, having to raise her voice a little to be heard over the music. "I must say I'm glad I came down here!"
"Where are Spitfire and the others?" Rainbow was curious.
"They had to leave early!" Applejack replied, fiddling a bit with her Stetson. "Somethin' about a big photo shoot! Luckily, Cloudjumper didn't need to go. He's been keepin' me company down here!" She looked over her shoulder at the pegasus, who waved back. She faced Rainbow again, a bit of blush forming on her cheeks. "And I must say he's been mighty good company too!"
Wait, what's that supposed to mean? Rainbow was getting more and more confused by Applejack's recent behaviour. Something wasn't right... "What do you mean by that?" She asked, worried a little about the response.
Applejack blushed even more, trying to hide the large grin on her face. She peeked another glance at Cloudjumper before replying. "Well, sugarcube, we got into quite a long conversation earlier. Talkin' a lil' bit about ourselves and such. It seems that, at some point, the discussion took a turn."
No. "In what way?" No no no no no NO!
Applejack could barely contain her excitement. "I asked him out on a date!" She blurted out, skipping on the spot in a similar fashion to Pinkie Pie. "And he said yes!"
Rainbow froze. The flowers slowly dropped from her grasp, the neatly arranged bouquet spilling out onto the floor. Flowers slid across the room, many trampled by the excited crowds of ponies running by. To Rainbow, it felt as if time itself had stopped. The plan had failed.

A Competition With Two Winners
To her friends, Rainbow Dash was a one-of-a-kind pony. She was confident, quite brash and devoted to flying. There were many who envied her, wishing they could be even twenty percent as awesome as the pegasus. She was even a hero in the eyes of some. But right now, staring at the sunken mare with the bloodshot eyes and trembling lip in the mirror, Rainbow didn't see any of that. Hours had passed since her return home and the moon began to reach it's peak in the night sky, dozens of tiny stars twinkling in the moonlight. Yet she didn't feel any better than before. She couldn't ignore the constant pain in her heart, tears still flowing freely onto the floor of her bedroom.
I was so close. So close. She slammed a hoof into the wall angrily, trying to fight back more tears. But you screwed up. Just like you screw everything up. She slumped down on the floor in defeat, overcome by fatigue. Why? Why can't I do anything right? She rubbed her eyes in an attempt to dry them. She sat on the cold stone floor, attempting to recall any and every good memory she had of Applejack. All the times they had laughed together. All the times they had played together. The moment, only that day, when she'd told her how important Rainbow was to her. Those memories, however small, offered her solace. Returning to the mirror, she looked at her weak form, trying to straighten up, putting on a brave face. No, this isn't you Rainbow. She trotted into the next room, her sparsely decorated living room. She headed over to a small cabinet in the corner of the room, gently opening it. She lifted out a picture and spent what felt like an eternity staring at it.
She took a deep breath, carefully returning the picture to the cabinet. If you loved her, you'd be there with her right now. She eyed her saddlebags, thrown into the corner of the room. And you damn well do love her! So get out there and do the right thing! With renewed confidence, she quickly grabbed her saddlebags and flew through the window, allowing the wind to flow across her aerodynamic body. She felt at home in the air, the breeze rushing through her coat, a simple comfort.
She flew over the sleeping town multiple times before a light in Twilight's treehouse caught her eye and she flew in closer to investigate. Tentatively raising a hoof to the door, she stepped in. She was more than surprised to see all five of her closest friends huddled together in the library, talking in hushed tones. Realising that none of them had noticed her entrance, Rainbow cleared her throat loudly to announce her presence. The ponies jumped at the sound, clearly not expecting company.
"Uh, what are you all doing here?" Rainbow asked. "Seems kinda late for a little meetup."
Twilight was the first to spot her and gleefully smiled her way. "Hey there, Rainbow! I'm surprised you didn't turn up sooner!"
Now Rainbow was confused. "Come again?"
Pinkie Pie bounced over to her. "I came to your place earlier, silly! I wanted to throw you a super-duper fun party!"
Rainbow threw her a quizzical glance, rubbing a hoof behind her neck. "Um, for what exactly?"
Pinkie rolled her eyes. "Duh! This is your 'totally-awesome-day-with-the-wonderbolts' party!" She bounced away again, landing perfectly into the oversized pink cake, covering herself and everypony else in icing.
"Pinkie!" They all shouted in unison before falling about laughing.
The six friends continued to laugh into the early hours of the morning, Rainbow and Applejack both telling them all about their day up in Cloudsdale. Well, except for the events in the restaurant, much to Rainbow's relief. Throughout the conversation, the other ponies couldn't help but be hooked by the tale. There weren't many ponies who'd had the chance to see the Wonderbolt's like the two mares had and even the timid Fluttershy found many of the Wonderbolts daring tricks and moves thrilling to hear about. Finally, though, they finished.
"Wow" Twilight's eyes were wide, leaning in close to Rainbow Dash. "I didn't realise that flying could be so thrilling! I'm almost envious of you pegasi."
Applejack chuckled. "Well I wouldn't go wishin' yourself a pair of wings, Twi."
Twilight blushed a little before turning to Rainbow. "Well I'm sure you had a lot of fun. I mean it's your dream, isn't it?"
Rainbow simply smiled in return. "Yeah, the Wonderbolts are the greatest! I mean, I've seen them out and about around Cloudsdale before but it was a whole new experience watching them train!" She absent mindedly turned towards Applejack. "And with such a special mare too..." Quickly realising what she just said, Rainbow clasped a hoof over her mouth.
"What was that, sugarcube?" Applejack asked.
Rainbow shook her head in denial, waving her hooves about in front of her. "Nothing! Nothing at all." Luckily, nopony pressed further and Rainbow relaxed a little. A sudden gasp from Applejack took her by surprise however, instinctively flinching from the sudden outburst.
"Oh my sweet- Girls!" Applejack beckoned them over. "I almost completely forgot to tell y'all about the best part of the day!" There was clear excitement in voice, talking in a similar way to the school fillies who'd just found out some new gossip in the school yard. "I met..." She paused, adding a dramatic effect to it all, her eyes looking between them all. "...Him !"
Pinkie Pie had a wide grin. "Wow, you met him? I've always wanted to meet him!" All the ponies looked at her, Twilight blatantly facehoofing. "Uh...who's him?" Pinkie gave an apologetic smile and a small squee as she let Applejack continue.
"Well, one of the Wonderbolts is a real doll, his name's Cloudjumper. Honestly, he's pretty much perfect! Fer a fancy flyin' pegasus, he seems like a swell guy. We struck up a conversation and well..." Applejack blushed a little, almost embarrassed to continue.
Rarity, however, was eager to hear the next part. "...And?" She asked, coaxing Applejack into giving out the juicy details.
"Well, we're going out on a date tomorrow!" At that, everypony was squealing with joy crowding around Applejack to congratulate her. "If you want to know more though, might as well ask Rainbow. After all, she's the Wonderbolt fanatic, ain't she?" She leaned out of the group trying to spot the pegasus. "Rainbow?" After getting free of Pinkie's tight grasp, she searched the room for her. "Now where in the hay has she gotten to?"
Nopony noticed the small window slightly ajar behind them, the curtains flapping in the breeze.

Chapter 6 - A Quick Visit
Twilight was just waking up when an impatient knock on her door startled her, her heart skipping a beat. She clumsily fumbled around with the bed quilt, falling onto the floor as she tried to scramble for the door. The consistent sound of a hoof on her door driving her forwards. "Okay! I'm coming, just calm down!" Twilight grumbled, groaning frustratedly. She opened the door, to see Applejack standing in front of her, a worried frown on her face. "Applejack?" She attempted to stifle a yawn, gently rubbing her eyes. "What are you doing here so early?"
"It's Rainbow." Applejack bit her lip, stepping into the spacious room. "I'm mighty concerned for her, Twi. We've barely seen her all week, 'cept fer when she flies over Ponyville occasionally but even then, she's only there for a few seconds." She sighed, her eyes looking down at the floor. Twilight merely stood there, contemplating.
"I wouldn't worry Applejack." Twilight offered. "Rainbow may just have been a bit busier than usual. If she had any concerns or problems, I'm sure she'd have come to us by now."
Applejack smiled warmly, appreciating how level-headed Twilight could be. "I know, I know. It's just that for a while now, Rainbow and I have always met up in the mornin' and raced around Sweet Apple Acres. We both enjoy the competition after all." She turned, taking a step closer to the unicorn. "But today, she was nowhere to be found. It's only once a week we get together and she's never missed it."
Twilight's expression softened and she put a hoof on Applejack's shoulder. "Look, next time we see Rainbow, you can get any answers out of her then." Twilight re-assured her. "Until then, there's no point in worrying over nothing. And anyway..." She added with a smirk. "Don't you have a certain coltfriend to get back to?" She playfully nudged Applejack, winking at her. Applejack's cheeks reddened, a small smile on her face.
"Yeah, I suppose I do." She chuckled to herself. "Don't think I'll ever get used to that fact."
The subject clearly peaked Twilight's interest, so she decided to continue on. "How is that all going anyway?"
"Oh, Twilight, I can't even begin to tell ya how amazin' he is!" Applejack was instantly smiling. "He's happy to spend any time he can down on the farm and helps me with a bunch of the chores. Everything just feels so...right around Cloudjumper, y'know?" Twilight nodded, understanding. "Why, I can't thank Rainbow enough. If she hadn't taken me to Cloudsdale that day, I may have never found somepony as special as him." Mentioning Rainbow's name shook Applejack out of her blissful trance. "Which is why I want to speak with her, I just want her to know how grateful I am. She's really the best friend I could ask for." She turned back to Twilight expecting some sort of response but Twilight was now sitting on the floor, tapping her chin with a hoof in thought.
Her eyes burst open suddenly, jumping back onto her four legs. "That may be why Rainbow hasn't been around lately! It makes so much more sense!"
Applejack raised an eyebrow. "Come again, sugarcube?"
"I may know what's happened to Rainbow..." As Twilight began to explain in a quieter voice, Applejack listened intently, leaning in closer.
Somewhere above the puffy, white clouds that stretched beyond the horizon, a mare with a rainbow-coloured mane was lying down, alone. As usual, Rainbow had quickly grabbed a small cloud and sat there, thinking. She found that she did most of her more rational thinking like that. She peeked her head over the cloud, gazing at the endless fields below her, as they whisked past. She nestled her head down into the cloud, trying to relax her mind. Anything to take her mind off of Applejack.
She'd thought she could handle it. She wanted to support Applejack's relationship. But she couldn't. She'd barely talked to anypony that week unless she needed to, instead choosing to be left alone with only her depressing thoughts to keep her company. She sat there sulking as she had for so long beforehand, allowing the cloud to take her wherever it wanted. Her ears perked up at the sound of distant yelling. While it didn't seemed to be directed at her, it was still a voice she recognised. She drearily opened her eyes, looking down from her perch to get a better look at what was going on. She instantly recognised where she was, rows and rows of apple trees beneath her. She turned her gaze towards the farmhouse where two figures were hauling barrels into the building. She squinted trying to get a better look. She could easily distinguish Big Macintosh; his powerful build and red coat were easy to pick out in a crowd. The other was a bit of a mystery but then, grinding her teeth together, she remembered where she'd heard the voice before. Cloudjumper She thought angrily, staring at his distant form sourly before turning her head the other way.
"I think that's the last one, Big Mac!" Cloudjumper shouted, a broad grin on his face.
The older stallion turned to him, giving a hearty "Eeyup!" before he walked into the farmhouse. Cloudjumper gave a few grunts as he pushed the last barrel into the barn, wiping the sweat away from his brow. He stood there for a while, laughing softly. Before meeting Applejack, he would never have imagined himself in a situation like this. About to leave, he heard faint hoofsteps in the distance and quickly ran out into the yard to see his marefriend return up the pathway. He rushed over to her, bringing her into a passionate embrace.
"I guess you're happy to see me then?" Applejack giggled, blushing slightly.
"Oh please Applejack." He rolled his eyes at her. "You know I'm lost without you!" They finally moved apart, sharing a short, sweet kiss before walking through the yard. "By the way," He added, smugly. "Your big brother and I happened to get all the cider barrels into the barn while you were gone."
"Really? I've only been gone less than an hour!" She nodded approvingly. "That's a darn good job you done there, sweetie. But in future, you needn't worry. It was my job as it is."
"Aha, that's where you're wrong. I will worry. I love you AJ. I love the farm. You already do so much work as it is, I'm more than happy to lighten the workload." He brought Applejack in for another kiss, this time lingering for longer. The mare seemed to protest as he pulled away, disappointed it hadn't lasted even longer.
"Sugarcube, you already do so much work trainin' with the Wonderbolts and such, I'm surprised you even have the strength to do it all!" She looked over the stallion, eyeing his strong legs and toned back, biting her lip. Seeing this, Cloudjumper smiled slyly and waltzed on over to Applejack.
"I still have plenty of strength to give. But I prefer to leave that for...other activities." He whispered in her ear, making the mare's cheeks turn even redder. She removed her Stetson, shyly covering her face trying to hide her blushing. "But as much grief as it gives me, I'm expected back in Cloudsdale so I'll see you later?" He asked hopefully.
"Absolutely" Applejack waved as he began to set off towards the clouds, with a big smile from ear to ear.

Fluttershy followed Rainbow's trail all the way to the mare's stylish Cloudsdale-esque house. She hovered in front of the floating home for a moment, nervous being around Rainbow at all after the outburst at Sugarcube Corner. She nervously hovered nearer and nearer to the door, trying to lift a hoof and knock on the door. Each time, however, she merely whimpered and cowered away a little. The sound of sobbing reached her ears, slightly muffled. Fluttershy quickly flew through the house, following the noise until reaching Rainbow's bedroom door. At the feel of something wet under her hoof, she instinctively flinched backwards, looking down to realise the floor was wet from the cyan pegasus' tears. With a courageous stride, she opened the door, a small gasp escaping her as she took in the room's features for the first time.
The bedroom was a wreck. Pictures were smashed, various furniture and pillows were flung about the room. Fluttershy followed the trail of tears to the bathroom, leaning her head round the corner to take a peek in. Rainbow lay in a heap on the floor, her whole body limp. Fluttershy edged her way over before finally announcing her presence. "Um, Rainbow Dash" The mare looked up at her with red eyes before returning to her sobbing. "Look, maybe now might not be the best time for a talk, but I think you owe us...owe me an explanation."
Rainbow kept her eyes shut. Ugh, can't she see I'm too busy wallowing in self pity? She groaned. "Just go away, Fluttershy. I wanna be alone right now." She sniffled, another barrage of tears on its way.
"Rainbow, what you need right now is a friend to talk to. That's why I'm here." Fluttershy gently lifted Rainbow's head up towards her, containing the urge to cry with her at the sight in front of her. Rainbow's usually vibrant mane was dull and lifeless, her eyes crimson red. In truth, for all the years they'd known each other, Fluttershy had never seen her friend so broken. Just the sight made her distraught. "Now." Fluttershy asserted her authority. "You're going to dry your eyes, calm yourself down and then tell me everything. Okay?" Rainbow gave the faintest of nods and began to slowly walk away. Fluttershy nudged her slightly. "Everything " She repeated herself.
It was a good ten minutes before Rainbow re-appeared, taking a seat next to Fluttershy on the bed. Taking slow and drawn-out breaths, she revealed everything. Starting right from when she first starting to like Applejack, right up until the drastic turn of events at Sugarcube Corner. Fluttershy often nodded, allowing herself to be an outlet for Rainbow. By the end, Rainbow had her head resting against Fluttershy's chest, the timid mare gently stroking her mane with her hoof. Somehow, she felt much better letting it all out and telling somepony. Her heart rate slowed and her body relaxed, her earlier outbreak concerning her much less than before.
"But what do I do now?" She asked, staring up at Fluttershy. "I don't know how I'll ever face Applejack again."
Fluttershy smiled, nuzzling her mane. "Oh, Rainbow. Applejack is our friend. We all know you've been a bit distant recently and I'm sure Applejack will understand. You love her, Rainbow. You can't just give up hope now, you have to get out there and sort things out." Her kind words comforted Rainbow. "Life throws challenges like this our way to test us. To see how far we'd go for somepony. You need to prove, to yourself , that your love for Applejack is worth fighting for."
Rainbow brightened up, jumping to her hooves with a grin on her face. "You're right, Flutters" She dashed across the room, sticking her head out the window. "If I go right now, I can fix things. I know I can!" She bounded over to Fluttershy, giving the mare a warm hug. "Thank you so much Fluttershy. Thank you." Fluttershy managed to squeak a small 'you're welcome' out as Rainbow squeezed her ferociously. Soon enough, Rainbow was gliding through the skies, intent on arriving at Sweet Apple Acres as quickly as she could.
She touched down in front of the farmhouse, eyes darting from left to right. She noticed Cloudjumper resting up against the wall of the barn and galloped over. While she may not like the Wonderbolt, this was no time to be picky. As she approached, Cloudjumper raised his head, his expression instantly becoming angrier. Rainbow nervously continued towards him. His brow furrowed, snarling. "What are you doing here?" He asked, annoyance in his voice.
"You wouldn't have happened to see Applejack anywhere have you?" She rubbed a hoof against a leg, trying to look innocent. The stallion's face didn't change.
"Yeah, I happened to see her. Frankly, she doesn't want to see you right now and I don't want you seeing her either." He stamped a hoof down, putting himself between Rainbow and the barn.
"Please, Cloudjumper, it's not what you think..."
"Oh yeah, well what I think is that I just saw the mare I love barricade herself in the barn with tears in her eyes and the pony responsible is standing right here." He gnashed his teeth, steaming. "So why don't you just go, huh? Instead of causing a problem!"
A small sniffle could be heard from the barn. "Cloudjumper, is that Rainbow outside?" The mare's voice was different to usual. Her voice cracking and she spoke very quietly. Cloudjumper quickly turned, slightly opening the barn door.
"Yeah it is." He sneaked another look at Rainbow, giving her a menacing glare.
"Let her in, Sweetie. If she wants to talk, let her in." Cloudjumper sighed, walking past Rainbow and trotting into the farmhouse. He turned his head to look at the pegasus one more time before continuing into the building. Rainbow gradually mustered up the confidence to open the door. The door creaked, as Rainbow silently stepped in. She could see Applejack on the far side of the barn, sitting on a bale of hay. "If you came to apologize Rainbow, it's okay. I should've realised you weren't yerself and left ya alone."
"No, Applejack, I'm sorry." Rainbow took another step towards Applejack, her breath becoming more ragged. "Not just for Sugarcube Corner but for everything." She gulped.
"What do you mean?" Applejack raised her head, looking directly at the pegasus, the grief from earlier still visible on her face.
It's now or never, girl. "I haven't been completely honest with you at all recently." Rainbow laughed slightly, a smile creeping onto her face. "And I know everything might seem crazy, but I'm just gonna throw it out there!" She could see the worry in Applejack's eyes. "I'm just so scared." She began pacing the barn, trying to focus her thoughts. "I don't want to lose you as a friend, but I'm driving myself mad here. So I'm just going to put it out there." Rainbow was blushing a deep crimson, her heart beating hard, seemingly trying to jump out of her chest. She walked towards Applejack. The mare she adored and loved. The most beautiful mare Rainbow had ever come across. Before Applejack could react, Rainbow locked her lips firmly against hers. Rainbow's heart fluttered, a hundred and one emotions all acting at once. It was a moment of pure bliss, the slight hint of apples and cider on Applejack's lips. She wished the kiss would last for eternity.
Applejack had other ideas, quickly jumping back from Rainbow. Oh no. Applejack looked at Rainbow in shock and horror, taking even more steps back from the mare. No, this isn't how it's meant to happen! As Rainbow hovered there helplessly, she couldn't help but see the look of betrayal on AJ's face. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
"You kissed me?!" Applejack shouted in disbelief. "First off, Sugarcube Corner and now this?! Are you TRYIN' to mess me up in the head? Is this some kind of big game to you? I finally find a special somepony, a stallion of my dreams and you just can't accept that can you?" She sighed. "And there you were, pretendin' to care when I confessed my problems to ya that day! You know what, maybe you should go."
"AJ, I-"
"I said leave!" Applejack started crying again, slumping against a hay bale. Rainbow paused a moment before making a hasty retreat, taking her broken heart with her.
She didn't know long she flew for. All she knew was she was going somewhere deep in the Everfree Forest where she wouldn't be able to mess up anything else in her life. If Applejack wants to be with Cloudjumper, She thought Then it'll be better for everypony if I leave before I ruin everything. Feeling defeated, she eyed a small cave and flew down to it. She entered the darkness, unaware of the impending danger ahead of her. All she cared about was the fact that she loved Applejack...
...But Applejack didn't love her back.

Cloudjumper returned to the barn a few minutes after Rainbow had made her swift exit, instantly noticing Applejack crying into her Stetson. He cantered over and brought her round for a hug.
"Shhhh." He stroked her cheek, calming her down. He offered a small smile. "It's okay. I'm here now." He looked around to realise Rainbow was nowhere in sight. "Where did Rainbow Dash go?"
Applejack growled slightly and began to walk up and down the length of the barn. "Oh where do I even begin with Rainbow? To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from her when she came in here, but I still didn't expect...expect..." She faded away, Cloudjumper moving in closer.
"AJ, what did she do?" He asked, a serious tone in his voice.
She turned around sharply to face him. "She kissed me!"
Cloudjumper scratched his head. "Kissed you?" He asked, confused at the situation.
"I just don't understand her. I mean, last time I saw her she was shouting at me somethin' fierce in front of all our friends, and then the next time, she brings me in for a kiss! It's like she's just tryin' to mess me up in the head! I swear ever since I told her about wantin' a special somepony in my life, she's been actin' weird. REAL weird." She sighed, drying her eyes with a hoof. She looked at Cloudjumper, who was...laughing. Applejack was suddenly angry. "And what is so funny about all this?" She asked impatiently.
He took a break to breath, putting his hooves round Applejack's neck. "Applejack, is it not obvious to you?" Applejack seemed bemused. "Rainbow loves you! Is that really not clear to you?" He grinned at her as she began to piece things together.
"But...I don't understand. Why'd she never mention anything like this before?" She asked, confused.
"Have you ever thought she may not have been sure it was what you wanted? That she maybe decided you'd be happier with me?" At his words, a memory flashed back into her mind. Their day at the Wonderbolts Stadium. Her own words echoing through her mind. I suppose that I saw how excited you were for it all. I thought that if it made you happy, then everythin' would be worth it. Slowly, gradually, Applejack understood everything more and more.
"But- but I don't even love her!" Applejack protested. Cloudjumper merely sat back, crossing his forehooves.
"Really?" Cloudjumper asked, a small smile on his face.
"Well of course really..." Applejack locked her eyes on his. "Hang on a nitpickin' minute. Why in the hay are you tryin' to make me confess lovin' her?"
He shook his head, closing his eyes as he tried to think of the right response. "Applejack, being with you has been the best three weeks of my life. But being with you, it's clear that you've loved Rainbow for a lot longer than even you realise. You may not realise it, but you're constantly on about her. You care for her, babe."
"But I- I-" Applejack couldn't reply, simply staring at the ground in defeat. "But Cloudjumper. I wanna be with you. I love you..."
"And I love you too" He kissed Applejack. This time, for a much shorter time than usual. "And that's why I know you should go after Rainbow. I love you enough to know you'll be happier with Rainbow than me." Applejack opened her mouth to speak but Cloudjumper silenced her with another kiss. "If it makes you feel any better, I'll follow you to the ends of Equestria to find her if we have to."
Applejack smiled, looking outside the barn. "Well, I guess we better get movin' then." She cautiously stepped outside, looking from left to right. "If I remember correctly, she exited towards the Everfree Forest." She gulped. "It's gonna be mighty dangerous navigatin' through those trees."
Cloudjumper appeared behind her. "Don't worry. I'm here for you." He pointed a hoof at the forest. "Now go and find your true love!"
Applejack laughed, as they slowly passed through the orchards, the forest looming closer and closer. They finally stood on it's borders, both gasping as they took in the forest's decrepit features. An unnatural fog covered every inch of it, trees posed menacingly along the single broken pathway. Applejack looked at Cloudjumper who seemed equally terrified. They both jumped at the sound of a Timberwolf howl in the distance, echoing through the forest.
"It's gonna take hours tryin' to find Rainbow. She could be anywhere in there." Applejack said nervously. Taking a deep breath, she gathered the courage to take the first step. "No goin' back now..."
Rainbow continued to sit in darkness, unmoving. The kiss replayed in her head over and over again and she couldn't help but regret it all. The moment of pure ecstasy as they locked lips and the moment of horror when she saw Applejack's reaction. She finally relaxed her mind enough to will herself to sleep. She shut her eyes, taking deep and slow breaths, allowing her mind to wander. She was woken up abruptly not two seconds later, by an unholy roar from deep within the cave. Shaking, she attempted to return to sleep. Another roar caused her to soar directly upwards smashing her head against the roof of the cave. Crashing onto the floor, she rubbed her head, grunting.
All of the pain quickly subsided when the ground started shaking beneath her. She whimpered, trying to back out of the cave. Hitting a wall behind her, she quickly realised the cave entrance was nowhere to be seen. All she could see was...nothing. Eternal darkness surrounded her, as she heard something getting closer and closer. She desperately hovered in the air trying to find any means of escape. Darting around the room, she bumped her head again but against something softer this time. That almost felt like it was...living. She slowly opened her eyes and looked up. She could make out a large, somewhat bear-like creature in front of her. It's purple coat unnaturally glowed in the darkness of the cave, a large blue star-like image adorned it's head. As Rainbow looked into the beast's yellow eyes and took note of it's massive teeth, she knew.
She was in deep trouble.

The eerie atmosphere of the Everfree Forest was shattered by the sound of hoofsteps dashing through the overgrown vegetation. As Applejack and Cloudjumper ran deeper and deeper into the mysterious forest, the fog clung to them and thorned bushes lashed out at every opportunity, a number of scratches and grazes across their coats. Applejack's breath was ragged, breathing faster and more heavily the further they ventured in. With the increasingly poor visibility, it was a challenge avoiding the various hazards that lay ahead as the ponies continued to run. Cloudjumper was faring no better, catching his leg in a rotting tree stump early on gave him a slight limp but nevertheless, he kept close to Applejack.
Finally, they both grinded to a halt as they reached a small clearing, falling to the floor from exhaustion. "This is hopeless." Applejack said, taking a breath in between each word as she tried to regain her composure. "At this rate, we'll be searchin' the entire of the Everfree tryin' to find her! It'll take days..."
Cloudjumper was flying around the clearing, making sure no predators had caught on to their presence. Satisfied, he returned to the ground. "We'll find her, Applejack." Cloudjumper assured her. "We'll be back before you know it." His eyes darted to the left at the sound of a distant roar. "But we have to keep moving. We won't last long just sitting here like this. I know how dangerous the Everfree Forest is even if I wasn't born around these parts." He grabbed her by the hoof, bringing her back up from the ground.
"Alright, sugarcube. Let's keep movin' then." They both exited the clearing, once again fighting against the trees and plants. Applejack prayed they would find Rainbow soon. Who knows what trouble she might be in? Deep in her thoughts, she didn't notice the branch sticking out in front of her. With a loud crack, she ran directly into it, coming to an immediate halt. Hearing the noise, Cloudjumper rushed over to her fallen form as she rubbed her head. Aside from the occasional wince in pain, Applejack steadied herself, allowing Cloudjumper to support her. "Thanks, 'jumper."
"Right here for you, AJ" He gently nuzzled her mane with a calm smile.
A deafening howl suddenly ripped through the air, startling the two ponies as they desperately searched for the source. Behind them, dozens of glowing green eyes stared at them, steadily getting nearer and nearer. The creatures hungry growls filled the air, pinning Cloudjumper to the spot with fear. Unlike Applejack, this was his first experience with Timberwolves and he was incredibly frightened by their sinister forms in the mist. Applejack nudged him repeatedly, her screams falling on deaf ears. Cloudjumper's eyes remained transfixed on the beasts in front of them.
"Lands sakes...Cloudjumper! Sugarcube!" Applejack shouted repeatedly, getting more and more annoyed. Eventually, she got his attention with a sharp hoof across his face. With him being temporarily distracted, she grabbed him and urged him to run. Hearing the vicious howls again, he quickly disappeared into the bushes, the apple farmer following suit. Everything became a blur as they ran for their lives, more cuts decorated their bodies as they tried to escape the Timberwolves. Applejack willed herself onwards, the rancid smell of the creatures' breath a constant reminder of the stakes of the situation. Her lungs protested, pleading for air. Cloudjumper turned to see the mare begin slowing down, unable to keep up. With fear in his eyes, he sharply brought himself to a stop and ran back to her. He leaped over her and put himself in between Applejack and the Timberwolves.
"Are you alright, Applejack?" He asked hurriedly, checking over her to make sure there were no deep wounds.
"I'm alright. A bit shaken but...I'm alright." Her voice was hoarse and Cloudjumper could see the doubt in her eyes. Hearing the Timberwolves again he froze, assessing the situation.
"Can you still run?" He asked hopefully.
"I reckon so. If we can lose these darn varmits soon, it'll be a whole lot easier." She offered a half-hearted smile. "Still, I don't think I've seen you this shaken up before. Y'alright to keep runnin' too?" She doubted they could keep going much longer. The pegasus let out a deep sigh, dropping his head.
Keep going Applejack, get out of here. I'll buy you some time. The word's from a stallion a long time ago seeped into her brain. Her pupils shrank. "What did y'all just say?"
"I said keep going." Cloudjumper puffed out his chest, taking a defensive stance. "Losing these things is gonna be impossible in our state. If I stay here, you'll have a small window of escape. You can get to Rainbow..."
"Oh no! We all go together!" Applejack protested, distant memories flooding back to her.
"Applejack!" Cloudjumper shouted at her, the most serious he'd ever been around her. "I'll meet up with you later, after all this is done."
Applejack's cheeks flushed in anger, tears in her eyes. "No you won't, you liar! I know how this ends! I've seen it all before goddarnit...I've seen it all..." Her anguish was momentarily broken as Cloudjumper kissed her on the cheek. Nothing more than a small peck, but it was enough to calm her.
Smiling, he gestured behind her. "Now go!" He watched the mare disappear through the fog and head into the brush. He slowly turned, grinning as he saw the rows upon rows of sharp teeth in front of him. "I promise you'll be safe."
Applejack tried to block out the noises behind her, as she ran further into the unknown. Desperate to find Rainbow and desperate to get out of the forest in one piece.
They would all get out together. No matter what.

Chapter 12 - Rainbow Dash
Rainbow scrambled across the floor for dear life, unable to fly and unable to run. Celestia, please get me out of this! I don't wanna die! Finding herself against the wall, she turned to look at the creature before her, breathing hard. Huge drops of saliva splashed the floor inches away from her hooves, the beasts teeth glinting in the sunlight. Hang on...sunlight? Rainbow quickly searched for the light, seeing a dim glow in the corner of her vision. With a new found sense of hope, she flew through the legs of the creature, keeping her eyes fixed on the light. Narrowly missing flying right into the cave wall, she took a sharp turn to finally see the exit.
She grinned triumphantly, relief washing over her body. After hours of being trapped in a cave, she welcomed the small breeze seeping through the entrance of the cave. Her moment of bliss, however, was swiftly ruined by the roar of the Ursa, as it lumbered towards her. Rainbow's whole body was shaking in sync with the cave, as it came nearer and nearer to her. Oh give a gal a break, would ya? Carefully avoiding the rocks falling from the ceiling, she spread her wings again, making a dash for the exit. Gnashing her teeth, she flew as fast as she could away from her pursuer. Bet you can't keep up with a pegasus as fast as me, huh big fella? Beaming at her success so far, she took a moment to glance behind her. It was clear the Ursa was struggling, its body often coming into contact with the cave walls as it tried to squeeze through. Due to the distraction, Rainbow didn't notice the loose stone above her break away from the roof of the cave as the Ursa continued to struggle. With terrifying speed it hurtled down towards Rainbow, it's sharp edges tearing at her wing. With a yelp of pain, she slammed into the floor. She dared to look at her wing, grimacing at the ruined feathers and broken joints.
Fear drove her onwards as she exited into the forest, galloping into the brush just as the massive creature came into view. Tiny creatures scuttled past Rainbow's hooves as another ear-splitting roar echoed through the forest. Take deep breaths, Rainbow. Deep breaths. Her heart rate began to slow, the adrenaline of being face to face with an Ursa Major beginning to subside. She had little success in moving her damaged wing at all, pain surging through her body. She began sobbing at the sight. You're such an idiot, Rainbow. You could've gone anywhere but oh no! Gotta find a dark cave deep in the Everfree Forest to exile yourself in! Rainbow shook her head, retreating further from the cave. She tried to move as quietly as possible to avoid catching the creature's attention. Anxiously, she put one hoof in front of the other cringing every time she broke a twig or branch. Taking a deep breath, she began to move faster. She was quickly stopped by a small rock, landing flat on her face. She lay on the ground dazed, rubbing her sore hoof.
Stupid rock! She groaned, frowning slightly. Something like that happens again and I'm toast! At a sudden realisation, her pupils shrank. Hang on a second, why is it so quiet? The beast had disappeared from it's perch, the sudden silence becoming deafening. Rainbow nervously edged away. She scanned every corner of her vision with her eyes, jumping at every slight sound. The sudden sound of wood cracking caught her attention, turning just in time to see the Ursa charge directly at her, toppling every tree in it's path. Like a deer caught in headlights, Rainbow momentarily froze to the spot, only beginning to run as the Ursa roared again, displaying rows upon rows of jagged teeth. The chase began again, a trail of destruction in its wake.
Applejack sat alone against a lone tree. She may have been sitting there for minutes, possibly hours, it didn't matter to her. She'd failed Rainbow and Cloudjumper. She didn't have the strength to go on. Her gaze fell upon her Stetson, neatly lying on the ground next to her. She snatched it up and brought it close to her. She lifted her head slightly as she heard another roar in the distance, this time closer. Curious, she stood up and began slowly walking towards the noise. Listening carefully for any sounds, she pressed on. Parting the bushes in front of her to get a better look, she was greeted with a face full of pony. She fell back, hitting her head hard on the dry ground. She opened her eyes to have her vision completely covered in cyan hair.
She struggled beneath the thing on top of her. "What in tarnation?" Finally released from the fleshy prison, she got a good look at the thing. "Rainbow!" She practically squealed, bounding over to the mare. They shared a long hug, tears of joy flowing down their faces as they held one another.
"Applejack, what are you doing here?!" Rainbow asked in a mixture of confusion and happiness.
"Here to rescue you, ya numbskull!" Applejack smiled, playfully nudging the mare. "Just didn't really expect to find you!"
With a sudden pang of guilt, Rainbow looked at Applejack. "Look AJ, I'm really sorry-" Rainbow was interrupted as a tree fell down beside them, narrowly missing Applejack. Both mares turned to see the Ursa's form, Applejack's face covered in shock.
"Is that an Ursa MAJOR?!" She asked in disbelief, staring at it in awe.
"Yep, long story short, I pissed him off!" Grabbing the apple farmer, she stated bluntly, "So we gotta run !"
The Ursa swiped at Rainbow, tufts of a rainbow tail taken away by the wind. Applejack was coming under pressure as well, ducking as a huge claw threatened to take her head clean off in one foul swipe. In reply, she bucked the huge paw with all her strength, the beast yowling in pain and fury as the mares began to slow down. Rainbow's heart was failing on her, her lungs aching. She stopped to take a breath and instantly regretted it. The Ursa noticed the rainbow-mane'd pegasus stop in front of him and lunged forward. Rainbow didn't have time to react as the paw tightened around her stomach. She yelped in pain as she was brought closer and closer to the creature's head.
Applejack turned, running towards them. She was quickly stopped as another paw pinned her to the ground. She struggled against it but watched helplessly as Rainbow disappeared in the Ursa's huge paw. There were few times when Rainbow had been truly scared before. But staring at the gigantic mouth in front of her, watching as she was slowly brought further and further towards it, she admitted it. She was terrified. Screaming in distress, Rainbow flailed around wildly, praying for a miracle. Applejack could barely comprehend the horror she was watching, tears welling up in her eyes. She barely noticed the Ursa's expression turn from anger to confusion as Rainbow was basked in a purple glow that spread across her body. Blinking repeatedly, she stared in shock as Rainbow was gently lifted out of it's grasp and flown over the treeline.
She didn't have time to dwell on it as she noticed the same glow entrap her. She cringed slightly at the feeling of being thrown around with no control of her body herself. She felt sick. She could hear the furious roars of the Ursa as it followed her through the trees. After a few seconds the trees flew past her and she found herself in a small clearing, staring directly at a purple unicorn.
"Twilight...?"
"Everypony on the chariot now." Twilight ordered, an air of authority about her. "I said, now !" Free from the clutches of her magic, Applejack galloped over to the chariot and slumped down in front of Rainbow. Twilight quickly stepped in and gestured to the royal guards to fly. Without a second thought, they leapt into the air. Despite the Ursa Major's cries, they were well out of its range. Still terrified, Applejack and Rainbow held each other close.
They didn't let go for the entire flight back.

Chapter 13 - Reconciliation
There was a great stirring as the golden chariot crossed the sky, slowly passing through the cloud cover and descending on the old library. The chariot landed in front of the treehouse, crowds of ponies gradually coming closer as they became more curious. An agitated unicorn quickly jumped off the vehicle followed by two very shaken mares. Even from a distance, you could see the stress etched on the purple pony's face. Twilight sent the royal guards back to Canterlot, their quest complete, before taking a deep and slightly shaky breath.
"Are. You. CRAZY?!" Twilight's anger exploded with the princess' guards off the scene, her face glowing red with fury. "You know, I've seen a lot of stupid things in my time, many of them quite ridiculous in nature. But this?" She laughed. "This is the textbook definition of stupid! You're lucky your Wonderbolt coltfriend showed up when he did. A second later, and you would have been that Ursa's afternoon snack!"
Applejack lit up at the mention of Cloudjumper. "Ya mean, Cloudjumper got out okay?" She breathed a sigh of relief, falling back on her rump. "Shoot, I was sure he was dead. Can't believe I doubted him..." She looked back up at Twilight's stoic expression, instantly losing the smile on her face. "He is...okay, right sugarcube?"
Twilight was quiet for a long time before stepping up to Applejack, a sad look on her face. "AJ, he's in Ponyville Intensive Care." The apple farmer couldn't fight back against the lump in her throat as the words hit her. Even Rainbow awoke from her hazy state as Twilight continued. "When he arrived, he was in bad shape. REAL bad shape. I did my best to numb the pain but..." Applejack noticed Twilight stifling a sob.
"...I can't grow back a missing leg."
Everything was still. Even the wildlife seemed to have gone quiet as the onlookers watched the orange mare fall to the ground, sobbing hysterically. Rainbow weakly shuffled towards her, gently embracing her. Following Rainbow's example, Twilight leaned in and also hugged her. The three friends sat in front of the treehouse, quietly contemplating the events of the past few days. For Rainbow, however, this made things much harder. She suddenly broke the embrace, leaping up in somewhat shock. I did this... She backed away from them, willing herself to fly away before it was too late. I did all of this. It's my fault...my own stupid fault! She turned away, staring up into the clouds. She steadily spread her wings, prepared to fly away.
"And where do you think you're runnin' off too, Rainbow Dash?"
Rainbow shrunk a little at hearing the annoyed voice behind her. Applejack had seemingly calmed down, though her eyes were still a bit watery. And she was now giving Rainbow Dash the stare. Any time Rainbow did something bad or messed up, she got the stare. And right now, the stare was pretty bad. She dragged a hoof across the ground nervously, avoiding eye contact with the mare. "Uh, nowhere in particular..."
"Well then, good. You're comin' with me back to the farm." She began trotting away from the treehouse, Twilight merely watching in confusion. Rainbow was equally bewildered.
"W-what?" Rainbow began to panic. Sweet Celestia no! The kiss! She's going to kill me! "I would love to Applejack. But I have some uh, other business to attend to." Rainbow lied.
Applejack was unimpressed. "Doesn't really matter to me, sugarcube. You're comin' with me and that's final."
Rainbow tried to pull a face but Applejack simply stared at her, tapping her hoof on the ground impatiently. Rainbow sighed in resignation. "Fine." Satisfied, Applejack led the way, walking past the still confused Twilight and heading along the track out of town. Rainbow trailed behind her, her hooves dangling in the air lazily. She flew over to Applejack and the two mares walked up to Sweet Apple Acres.
The small crack of light peeping into the barn quickly became bigger as the huge doors opened up with a slight creak. Rainbow gently put herself down on one of the cider barrels dotted around the place, once again her heart becoming heavy with guilt as she remembered seeing Cloudjumper moving them earlier that day. And now here she was, awaiting her punishment from the mare who's life she'd ruined.
Rainbow decided to speak first, breaking the silence the two mares had kept since leaving Twilight's. "Look AJ. I know what you're gonna say so just...just get it all over with and kill me, all right?"
Applejack simply looked back at her with a mildly amused look. "You really think I blame you for today, Rainbow?"
Rainbow rubbed her hooves together nervously. "Well heh, I sorta kissed you and then left you in a situation that got your coltfriend killed." Seeing the tears in Applejack's eyes, she quickly added, "Almost! That got your coltfriend almost killed." Another awkward silence filled the barn. Both mares looking at the ground uncomfortably. Applejack was constantly shifting from side to side nervously.
"Well, the kiss wasn't all that bad"
"HUH?!" Rainbow fell off the barrel backwards, landing awkwardly on the ground. Did she just say...?
"Look Rainbow, I-I overreacted a bit when you kissed me earlier." She sighed slightly. "I mean I had good reason, but I shouldn't have lashed out as much as I did, and I'm mighty sorry for that. After all, we'd probably not be in this situation right now if I'd had a lick of sense earlier."
Rainbow was barely even breathing at all, her heart pumping madly at hearing Applejack's confession.
Applejack lifted her head and looked at Rainbow with a smile. "Cloudjumper sorta told me I was bein' stupid. Said I love you and just didn't know it." She frowned a little as she thought about what to say next. "Look, I don't know if I wanna be with you. I mean you're a great friend and I love ya like a sister. It's just..."
Rainbow finally piped up. "Applejack, I'm not going to force you into a relationship you don't want. What kind of a friend would I be if I did that?" As much it pained her heart to say it, she knew it was the right thing to do.
"Rainbow, I want to...try. Maybe if we went on a few dates...or whatever you do in a relationship like this, maybe I might know fer sure if I do..." Applejack blushed slightly. "Well y'know."
Rainbow smiled back at her dreamily as the pieces began to fall together. "Oh! Wait right here!" Rainbow said, darting out of the barn in an instant. She quickly returned, landing outside the door. "Alright, close your eyes." Slightly curious, Applejack closed her eyes. In the darkness, she could hear Rainbow's light hoofsteps approaching her, tensing slightly in anticipation. She jumped a little as she felt something warm and soft placed on her head. Quickly opening her eyes, she looked up.
"My hat!" She exclaimed in amazement. "When? How?" Applejack was lost for words.
"You left it behind as we ran from the Ursa, I noticed it so quickly grabbed it before catching up to you." She blushed slightly as she saw the joy on her face as she held the hat in her hooves. "I know how much you like it and-" She was interrupted mid-sentence by the feeling of another pony's lips against hers. Rainbow may have kissed her in the barn earlier that day, but it was nothing compared to this . Applejack held the Stetson close to her chest as she lingered for a few seconds longer, smirking slightly at Rainbow's shocked yet delighted face.
The right gift can change a ponies heart.
The words echoed through Rainbow's head as she blissfully took in the taste of apples on her lips, savouring it all. She was only shook from her walk in dreamland by Applejack loudly clearing her throat in front of her.
"Thank you, Rainbow. It means a lot to me that you held onto this. Really."
"I love you, AJ."
Applejack paused, biting her lip before smiling warmly. "I love you too, Rainbow."
As the sun set over the horizon, the two mares sat together against a hay bale to watch it. They sat there for hours, long after the moon took it's place in the night sky.
And never broke the loving embrace they shared.

The sun steadily rose in the sky, rays of golden light shining down on the many bountiful fields and hills across the land. The warm sunlight shone throughout Ponyville, ponies gradually rising out of bed to greet the morning. As the minutes ticked by, the streets became busier and busier, a whole spectrum of colour in the markets as ponies of all shapes and sizes began to busy themselves with their daily tasks and chores. However, there was no rainbow contrail to greet them this time. Instead all they saw was a cyan pegasus slowly walking down the street, one wing completely covered in white bandages. While some offered a 'good morning', the cyan pegasus ignored them all, staying true to her path up to the hospital.
Rainbow felt happier than she had ever been before, the smile on her face impossible to get rid of. Yet somewhere deep inside her, that heavy feeling of guilt still resonated. I'm sure if I can just see that Cloudjumper is okay...it'll be fine. She thought, trying to stay optimistic. He's a Wonderbolt. He's strong. There's no way he couldn't pull through... The more Rainbow thought about it, the more hurried her walk became. As the hospital loomed ahead, Rainbow spotted her marefriend on a nearby bench, staring down at the ground. She quickly rushed over.
"I'm here, Applejack!" She said loudly to get the mare's attention. Applejack smiled as Rainbow came nearer.
"Mornin', sugarcube." Rainbow jumped on to the bench with her, sneaking in a small peck on the lips.
"So, you want to go in?" Rainbow asked, surprised to see Applejack outside in the first place.
Applejack sighed. "I don't rightly know. What if he isn't in a good state?" There was fear in her voice. "If he doesn't...I just..." Applejack struggled to continue between the quiet sobs. Rainbow merely tried to comfort her.
"Of course he'll be fine, AJ. There's no way he won't make a full recovery." Rainbow assured her, softly stroking the mare's mane. Wish I did believe that... "Come on. Let's go in; I'm sure he's up already. Might even be waiting for us!"
Applejack offered a small smile and took a deep breath. "Okay." She said quietly, shutting her eyes.
The hospital itself was very quiet compared to the outside world. Almost immediately upon entering the pristine lobby, the chatter of dozens of ponies in the town died down and the early morning birds became silent. Their hooves echoed in the room and only the sound of their shaky breath accompanied the sound. The receptionist, a pleasant-looking young unicorn, greeted them as they walked in.
"Good morning! Welcome to Ponyville Hospital!" She chirped, smiling. "Are you here to see a doctor or a patient?"
"A patient." Applejack stated, glancing down the corridor towards the wards. "We're looking for a pegasus who was brought in a few days ago."
The unicorn levitated out a small pad of paper, examining the list of names scribbled down on it. "Would that happen to be a Cloudjumper, per chance?" She looked back up at them.
Rainbow nodded. "Yep, that's our guy. Can we go see him?" She asked eagerly.
The unicorn frowned slightly as she thought. "I suppose so. Can't see why not. Just be careful though; he's still very weak." Thanking her for the warning, the two mare's galloped down the corridor to the wards. The unicorn simply sat there smiling, laying back in her chair. Soon, Applejack and Rainbow Dash returned looking rather sheepish. The receptionist chuckled softly. "Second door on the right."
The wooden door creaked loudly, opening up into a decorated private ward. The walls were covered with intricately designed statues and figures as well as silky red curtains matching the soft, red carpet underfoot. A single bed lay in the middle of the room, Cloudjumper's form resting in it. Applejack anxiously trotted over, quickly followed by Rainbow. Cloudjumper's chest rose and fell as he breathed steadily, a loud beep...beep...beep droning in the background from the monitor beside the bed.
With a tear in her eye, Applejack grabbed one of the small chairs scattered around and dragged it closer to him. Taking a seat next to the monitor, she spoke softly, in the same way a mother may speak to her child when she was comforting him. "Hey, 'Jumper. I'm here. What you did wasn't in vain...we got Rainbow out safely with only a messed up wing to worry about." She almost hoped for a response, even a small grunt. "I just hope you can hear me because...I want you to know we're safe." She could feel the lump in her throat. "I was so angry at you when you stayed behind like you did. It reminded me so much of when my Pa died...I couldn't handle it. But I know I wouldn't have made if it weren't for you." Cloudjumper remained still as she continued. "You were even right about me and Rainbow. We're on a trial run so to speak, seein' if things'll work out. I just pray...you'll be here to see it."
Rainbow who was watching, was already in tears, embracing Applejack as they both silently prayed for Cloudjumper to come back to them. It was a good ten minutes before they re-emerged from the hospital, now more calm and collected than before. Both seemed content knowing Cloudjumper was stable and recovering.
"So Applejack...you ready for tonight?" Rainbow asked, trying to distract her mare from her current distress after seeing Cloudjumper.
"Of course, RD." She replied, grinning. "There's no way I'd miss it."
"Feeling confident are we?" Rainbow laughed and winked at Applejack. "You know I'll destroy you this time."
"Come on, Rainbow. We both know you suck at Bowlin'." The farmer stifled a laugh, as Rainbow turned on her with a flushed expression.
"I do not!" She protested. "I've just had a particularly bad streak recently. And, I mean, you know...it's not easy when you're waving your flank at me all the time!"
Applejack leaned in close to Rainbow. "What's the problem, sugarcube? Am I too distracting for you?"
Rainbow sighed. "You're obviously going to be distracting when you insist on shoving your damn sexy body in my way!" Quickly realising what she'd said, she blushed a deep red.
"Oh you do have a way with words." Applejack remarked leading them back into the markets. "You know, we should probably mention all of this to our friends sometime."
"Are you sure about that?" Rainbow stammered. "I mean, who knows what they might think of well..."
"Fillyfoolers?" Applejack completed the sentence, sighing. "I don't know but they are our friends. I'm sure they'll be happy for us no matter what."
Rainbow smiled, bringing in Applejack for another kiss. "Well it's me and you from here on out!"
"Darn tootin'!"
And with that, the mares set off on their next adventure.

Chapter 7 - Sugarcube Corner
Sugarcube Corner was always filled with ponies during the early morning. Orders flying in from every direction as Mr and Mrs Cake darted in and out of the kitchen. Even so, delicious baked goods were made in an instant, the bright pink pony at the counter smiling gleefully. Pinkie Pie happily attended to each customer as more and more entered the store. From their small table off to the side, Pinkie's friends watched her in awe for the whole morning. Pinkie eventually made her way over to the table, her friends still in disbelief.
"Pinkie, dear? How exactly do you do that?" Rarity asked taking another sip of her tea. "Surely anypony would get tired out from serving customers like that all morning!"
Twilight nodded slowly. "I think I might have collapsed after the first five minutes." The other ponies looked at her, unable to help but smile. "Why are you all looking at me like that?"
Even though most of them just shook their heads and continued to eat, Fluttershy quietly replied, "Well, um, no offense Twilight but you freak out over just about everything..." Noticing the glare Twilight was giving her, she whimpered and began to shrink under the table. "Just...saying." Pinkie giggled to herself and eventually Twilight's expression softened and she began laughing as well.
"Yeah, okay." The purple unicorn rolled her eyes, levitating her milkshape up to her lips.
Rainbow was nodding off slightly next to Rarity, her face buried between her hooves on the table. Aside from the occasional stir, she barely moved throughout the conversation. In her mind, images of her and Applejack kept flashing by. You and you're freckles shall be mine, my mighty goddess. One day...one day... She shook her head, looking from left to right to double check she hadn't said anything out loud. Satisfied, she let herself continue to dream about the Earth Pony. What does Cloudjumper have over me anyway? I'm just as athletic as him, more awesome and not to mention more sexy! It was then that Rainbow remembered. Oh yeah, he's a stallion. Great. How can I beat that? She shook her head again, desperately trying to cling on to any hope she could. Maybe she's into both? Her train of thought was interrupted as she heard the southern voice behind her.
"Knock knock? Anypony home?" Applejack gently poked Rainbow with a hoof for the fourth time, checking over her unmoving form. "Rainbow?" Finally, the mare stirred, blinking a few times as she tried to work out her surroundings. She turned round her tired eyes finally making contact with Applejack's deep emerald ones. She blushed instantly averting her eyes.
"Oh hey, Applejack. Didn't see you there." She chuckled nervously on her chair.
"Bit too busy daydreaming about a certain somepony, hm?" Applejack smiled knowingly, raising an eyebrow at Rainbow.
Instantly, Rainbow's pupils shrank, falling off her seat as she tried to escape. WHAT?! How could she know? She bit her lip, beads of sweat already appearing.
Applejack laughed and began to walk towards the back of the store. "Mind if I talk to you about that for a minute, Rainbow?"
Rainbow nervously got to her hooves, slowly following the mare away from the table. All the ponies, save for Twilight, were left confused at the turn of events, watching the two mares disappear around the corner. Once Applejack was sure they were out of earshot, she turned to Rainbow, frowning slightly. Rainbow gulped, shrinking slightly in her presence. Well, this is it Rainbow. You had a good run. She mustered a smile, pretending nothing was wrong. "So what's up Applejack? Why did you need to talk to me in private?"
Applejack wasn't impressed. "Drop the act, sugarcube. I had a talk with Twilight the other day and frankly, I'm surprised I didn't see it myself." She advanced on Rainbow, the pegasus attempting to back away from the confrontation. "Ever since I started seein' Cloudjumper, you've been nowhere to be seen and anytime you're with us, you always seem so...distant." She paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. "When I talked to Twi about it, I think I began to understand." Applejack fiddled with her Stetson, exhaling slowly. "Rainbow...I'm sorry, okay? I should've realised you probably had a crush on Cloudjumper from the beginning. I didn't mean to ruin your chances, sugarcube. Honest, I didn't." She tried to put a hoof out to Rainbow but Rainbow just stared at her.
Cloudjumper? CLOUDJUMPER?! Thats it! Rainbow was bursting with rage, she slapped Applejack's hoof out the way, making the mare reel back in shock. All the weeks of depression, the nights she cried herself to sleep, her jealousy...all of it reached a boiling point. "You think that I'm jealous of you?! After all these weeks, that's the best you could come up with?!" Rainbow's raised voice caught the attention of her friends at the table, who watched as the two mares came back into view. "I don't CARE about Cloudjumper! For all I care, he could get KILLED and I still wouldn't care! In fact, I would probably be happy to see him go!" She was shouting at the top of her voice, Applejack backing up more and more. She was eventually backed up against a wall, their friends watching in horror as the scene unfolded in front of them. "No! I don't care about your relationship with him, I don't care in the slightest! You just don't understand! You NEVER will!" Rainbow was seething, breathing hard. She stopped, gasping and lifting a hoof to her mouth as she realised what she'd just said. She looked down at Applejack, who was slumped on the floor, tears welling up in her eyes. Rainbow felt herself beginning to tear up at the sight. "Oh no. Applejack I-I'm so sorry." Her voice cracked.
Applejack shakily got back onto her hooves, unable to make eye contact with Rainbow. "It's okay, Rainbow. It's okay..." Her voice was quiet and fearful as she spoke. Unable to bear the sight, Rainbow closed her eyes and made a swift exit through the door. The others simply sat, open-mouthed. Even Pinkie's hair was sagging, unable to comprehend the situation. Her usually happy demeanour was now an upset one as she ran into the kitchen. Fluttershy looked around the shocked faces of her friends before sneaking out the door as well, following the rainbow streak in the sky.

Chapter 11 - A Pause For Thought
Darnit, Cloudjumper! How am I meant to keep goin' like this? My legs are already feelin' weak and my body hurts all over...how did we even get into this situation? Oh Rainbow...why would you come out here all on yer own? I just can't comprehend all of this. I may have lost Cloudjumper and my best friend and I wouldn't even know it! What do I even say if I even find Rainbow in this damned mess? Am I meant to apologise for snappin' at her after the kiss or somethin'? Should I be expectin' an apology? Grrr...my head hurts.
Why am I alone again? I hate bein' alone like this. I wish Rainbow were here...Hell, I wish anypony was here! At least if it was Rainbow...I could see for sure if Cloudjumper was tellin' the truth or not. I mean, what even counts as love? I mean sure she has a nice body...bein' athletic and all. But do I love her? Or is it merely the fact we're good friends that I can think like that? Ugh...I need to find her and sort out this mess. As long as I approach things right, I can work out this whole ordeal. Just gotta block everything out and focus on Rainbow. I can do it. I can find her!

Really just a small extension to chapter 10 giving a bit more insight into Applejack's thoughts about everything. I'm sensing some serious awkwardness when those two meet again
