It was a glorious night. Not that it wasn’t always as such, but tonight it was particularly so. Luna sighed, “now if only there were more ponies up to enjoy my hard work.” Truth be told there were several relatively large parties and events going on throughout the various reaches of Equestria that she knew of, full of ponies who could enjoy her celestial masterpiece, but she wanted something to provide more of an immediate reward. She smiled a bit, imagining how Celestia would respond to the pettiness of her flawed logic.
“I’m allowed to be the little sister every now and again Tia.” Luna murmured to herself with a soft laugh, as she continued gliding effortlessly through the Equestrian skies, relishing the feeling of the cool night air enveloping her outstretched wings.
Luna continued to scan the streets of Canterlot--for anything really. The streetlights were recently improved, leaving no real hiding place for any would-be ne'er do wells. Not that she’d admit it, but Luna often longed for the days where it would be acceptable for the Princesses to walk the streets, stopping any crime they saw personally and making situational judgements for what punishment they received. Nowadays, Canterlot had a less than .5% crime rate, which left little for Luna to entertain herself with, aside from prank her sister while she slept of course. Personally, Luna felt that Tia looked smashing with a drawn-on unibrow. She laughed heartily to herself, recalling the hilarious image. She was indeed entitled to getting to act the younger sister every now and again.
Luna banked a turn over the outer suburb-esq region of Canterlot, which delegated the proud, shining city's southern border. She looked off into the distance, barely being able to make out the dim, sparse lights of Ponyville. She slowed her flight and took a moment to remember her newfound friends who resided there. Suddenly, a large, bright red bolt of lightning pierced through the sky, striking the ground roughly halfway between Ponyville and Canterlot, snapping Luna out of her thoughts. “By Starswirl’s beard, what was that all about!?” She asked to nopony in particular. She searched the sky for anypony who could have forced a cloud to create the bolt, but there were no clouds in the sky that night for them to even do such with. Her curiosity driving her, she flew towards the location of where the bolt had struck. As she approached the strike-zone, she noticed a cold fog had started to develop around the area. She alighted near the edge of the fogbank, and started to make her way into it when a bright purple flash was emitted near her.
“Woah, first random RED lightning bolts on cloudless nights and now weird cold fog? What the hay is going on here!?” A young but scholarly voice called out through the fog.
Luna smiled, knowing immediately who it was that had teleported to investigate.
“That is precisely what I was wondering as well, Twilight Sparkle.”
Her reply was met with a gasp of surprise before the lavender librarian of Ponyville, and recently appointed Princess of Friendship emerged through the wispy wall of white. Twilight smiled broadly and bowed, “Princess Luna! What are you doing here? N-Not that you’d have any reason not to be here, I mean, with the whole anomaly in the night and you being the princess of the ni-”
Luna placed her hoof to Twilights lips to silence her, smiling back amusedly. “We are glad to see you as well Twilight Sparkle” She slipped into talking in the old ways again,” We- I mean, it is nice to see you too Twilight, and there is no need to be nervous when addressing me, we are equals now, remember?”
Twilight nodded in reply, smiling sheepishly, “riiiight, sorry,I’m still getting used to that, Princess.” She turned and looked in the direction of the epicenter of the strike, from which the fog seemed to be originating, before turning back to Luna. “I guess we should get to the actual strike zone and see if we can't find what’s making all this fog, because last time I checked, lightning didn’t do this…”
Luna laughed and began to walk forward through the fog, “ Indeed” she said matter-of-factly. “Onward then Twilight, let us find the source, do try to stay close though, this fog is rather thick.”
They began making their way through the fog, walking towards where they believed the center to be for several minutes, alternating who was to lead randomly based upon pace, but never losing sight of the leader. It was while Twilight was leading when they stumbled upon the source.
“Luna! I think we found it!” Twilight called out to the night princess, who emerged from the fog short thereafter. Laying, seemingly unconscious, upon a large piece of permafrost, was a deer.
The two alicorns approached the sleeping cervidae cautiously. “Princess Luna, i-is he a deer?!”
“Indeed he is Twilight.” Luna replied in monotone as she continued to approach him, not taking his eyes off of him.
“But they’re almost unheard of in Equestria! And what’s with the ice he’s on? I know that wasn't here earlier.” Her tone was that of genuine incredulity.
Luna still did not turn around to face her, instead she climbed up upon the ice and lifted the hypothermic deer onto her back with her telekinesis. When his skin touched hers, she visibly shivered. “Twilight, I need you to meet me in canterlot, go home, pack some things, I’ll send my nightguard chariot as soon as I get back, so be swift with your packing.” With that she and the deer were gone in a swirl of dark smoke, headed toward the gleaming gem city of Equestria.
Twilight was left standing in the fog beside the large chunk of permafrost upon which the mystery deer had been found. She shivered from the intense cold the substance was letting off.
"Princess Luna better have a good explanation for being so mysterious about all of this" She muttered as she charged up her horn and teleported back to the library to pack, and inform Spike that she'd be gone for a while. With a flash, the field was once again empty, save for the fog and ice.
In Canterlot, a wisp of dark smoke snaked it's way across the night sky with alarming speed. It approached the royal palace and flew through an open window above which was the crest of Equestria's nightly ruler. Having arrived in a bedchamber, whose design was befitting of the night matriarch, the wisp condensed and formed the night ruler herself. She looked back to see that the deer was still upon her back. Luna sighed in relief and made her way to her large bed and laid him down upon its dark blue sheets. She stared down upon him with concern, interest, pity, and sympathy.
He is breathing, that's a relief.
She quickly went to the door and cracked it open with a brief pulse of her magic. The appointed guard who waited outside looked to her.
"Have the nightguard send a chariot to Ponyville to pick up Princess Twilight post haste."
The guard replied with a nod and galloped off, leaving Luna to return to her room, to monitor the strange guest she housed within it. She sighed and levitated another log into the smoldering fire, that had been neglected within her jet black hearth. She turned back to the frigid dear who laid, still unconscious, upon her bedsheets.
The frost upon his pale beige coat and blueish/jade tale and chest fur had begun to melt, soaking into the bedsheet.
Luna shook her head, they'll have to be changed i suppose..... I'll have to give Tia a good excuse as to why i had to get them changed though.
The deer took a sharp inhale of air and twitched slightly, before his breathing steadied out again.
Luna sighed. He would be OK, she could sense it. And when he awoke, she'd have many questions that he'd have to answer. Now, she merely had to await Twilight's arrival.
