Love is an Oddity
Chapter 1: The Mare with the Green Eyes
Load Full StoryDerpy yawned as she awoke from a deep slumber. She stumbled her way into the kitchen, as she did every morning, and started to make toast. Then the toaster started to blur. Oh not this again. Derpy scolded herself. Almost every morning after the Doctor had gone, Derpy had gone through the same routine: Wake up, stumble into the kitchen, make toast or muffins, wake up Dinky, take her to school, then sit at home crying for most of the day. Dinky was worried for her mother; the first couple of weeks since the Doctor had gone she had barely gotten out of bed. And due to her grief and eye condition, Derpy Hooves couldn't hold a job for more than a week. It was amazing she had stayed with her mailmare post for so long. Derpy sighed to herself as she went up the stairs to go wake up Dinky. I still cry at the smallest... A wail escaped Derpy's lips. She broke down, collapsing to the floor in a heap, sobbing. His smile, the way he would call her 'Ditzy', his Trottingham accent, their adventures together... the memories were flooding back, stronger than ever.
"Mom! Mom I-" Dinky stopped when she reached the top of the staircase, seeing her mother sprawled out in the middle crying her heart out.
"Oh Mom." Dinky cried, embracing her. Derpy sniffed.
"I-I'm sorry... It-Its' just that its'... well, I met him four years ago today," She sighed.
Her relationship with the Doctor had been long and fulfilling, but not long enough.
"Dinky" Derpy said as she straightened herself up. "Let's get you ready for school, ok?"
Dinky smiled. "Ok Mom."

After the two had eaten their breakfast, Derpy went to go get her and Dinky's saddles and boots. It was winter, and even colder due to the fact that it had snowed a day earlier.
"Dinky, are you ready? Do you have your saddlebag and your homework?" Derpy asked, turning around to see Dinky staring out the window.
"Dinky, could you put on your saddle please?" Derpy asked warmly.
"Mom." Dinky asked, clearly confused. "Who in Equestria is that alicorn?"
"What alicorn?" asked Derpy, bewildered.
There was only one alicorn in Ponyville, Princess Twilight Sparkle. But Dinky knew her, and so did Derpy. She was one of the few ponies in town who didn't make fun of her eyes, and her past relationship with the chestnut Doctor. Maybe one of the princesses...no, they wouldn't come to Ponyville without notifying Mayor Mare and Twilight Sparkle first, plus there would have been a grand entrance with preparations that would have taken days. So who was it that Dinky was talking about?
"Let me see," Derpy parted the blinds further, so she could get a better view of whoever was outside.
Out in the frigid temperatures was an undressed peachy mare with a manestyle similar to Pinkie's. The two wings resting at her side and horn atop her head were distinctive, classifying her as an alicorn.
"Who do you think she is?" asked Dinky curiously.
"I don't know." said Derpy, bewildered. Was it possible for a pony to be born a natural alicorn, and not be royalty? Derpy Hooves doubted it. Suddenly, the mysterious alicorn collapsed, due to her lack of a saddle to keep her warm. Ponies had fur, sure, but even that wasn't enough to keep a pony warm during the cold winter months. Suddenly, the old, adventurous side of Derpy kicked in.
"Come on Dinky! We've got to help her!" she threw on her winter apparel and burst open the door. "Hey, miss!"
The alicorn groaned and shifted her eyes to the grey mare. Upon seeing her she smiled.
"Derpy," she croaked. Derpy was startled. How did this peachy mare know her name? The mare smiled again, but then winced and rubbed her head.
"Are you alright?" Derpy asked worriedly. The alicorn looked ill.
"Nope," answered the peachy mare, whose head then drooped downwards and her body fell slack as if she didn't have the strength to hold herself up anymore. Oh crap! thought Derpy. She rushed up to the mare's side, and saw that her green eyes were still open, and her heart was still beating. The mare returned her gaze with a 'derp' face and said,
"I see black dots." Then she passed out.
