Not long after the founding of Equestria the tribes of Earth Ponies, Unicorn and Pegasus began to prosper and live in harmony with one another. Far off atop a mountainside stood the great city of Canterlot where the leaders of the four tribes held council and governed their kingdom with wisdom and trust but this happiness was not to last.

Far off in the northern wastes lived an ancient tribe of creatures known as Wargs who lived their lives plundering and killing any who dared to stand against them. Their leader was named: "Gor'Zan The Butcher".

He was a towering warg chieftan whose armor was decorated with the skulls of his victims while his only injury was his left eye that was cut out by Commander Hurricane herself during a skirmish on the border of the wastes and it was on that day that he'd swore he'd bring an end to the Equestrian Empire before it could flourish and soon the lands to the north fell to the wargs but not all hope was lost.

Uniting against this common threat the Earth Ponies, Unicorns and Pegasai marched against the armies of Gor'Zan and thus began the great war.

The blood of both warg and equestrian stained the land as the conflict grew with the enemy forces growing stronger with each victory while the morale of the Equestrians grew weaker but amidst the chaos the commander had one child whom she cherished dearly; Her only son Storm Wind.

His eyes were red like his mothers coat while his was black along with his mane, his father General Stout Heart was killed on the front lines during the first year of the war leaving his mother to look after him and although she was strict most times Storm Wind loved his mother dearly and was in training to take her place along with his closest friends; Archer a unicorn who was a master marksman, his sister Charm Caster another Unicorn who specialized in elemental magic and Iron Forge; An earth pony who was the largest among the group and an expert blacksmith.

Years past and the time soon came when all four were old enough to enlist in the army. Stormwind took an assignment as a foot soldier along with Archer while Charm Caster joined the battle mage division and Iron Forge became a master blacksmith for the army.

"Where's our post?"

Archer asked slightly turning to his friend while the general on stage gave a speech to his new recruits.

"An outpost on the border. Not much action though."

Said Stormwind sounding disappointed since he was hoping to be sent to the front lines like his father before him and at the end of the ceremony all the recruits as well as the crowd cheered in excitement while some looked on with heavy hearts knowing they were sending their children off into war knowing they might never come back.

Like all warrior traditions it was customary for the mothers of all pegasai warriors to dress their children in armor passed down through the family and the time had come for the commander to hand down her late husbands armor to her son.

Though she was supposed to feel proud of him Commander Hurricanes eyes saddened as she placed the helmet atop her sons head making him a spitting image of his father and soon her eyes slowly flooded with tears as she hugged him giving only one request.

"Come back with your shield....or on it."

Stormwind said and did nothing knowing it would only make things worse as he picked up his shield and sword heading off to join the others, after two days march the recruits finally arrived at the outpost where a handful of soldiers were already hard at work training or building defenses while some lazed about in the shade. It wasn't long before Archer and Storwind were shown to the barracks as a guard captain marched up to them holding his helmet on his side.

"Archer and Storm Wind?"

"Yes sir."

Storm Wind called still standing at attention with Archer.

"Congratulations. you two get to work tonight's guard shift."

Although it was expected most recruits had to prove themselves useful by completing at least one task given by their commanding officer and when the captain had left the two friends simply shrugged their shoulders and decided to hit the hay with Archer calling top bunk while his friend simply fell onto the bottom mattress finally feeling the exhaustion of the long march towards the outpost.

Night soon fell with a full moon illuminating the dark shadows within the fortress but the silence felt eerie and unnerving what with the occasional howl in the distance while Storm wind and Archer guarded the western wall of the fort.

The silence was only broken by the sound of the wind passing through and the flags flapping in the breeze, as the two were about to change shifts Archer spotted a silhouette in the moonlight knocking an arrow faster than he could blink only to see nothing but a white blanket of snow with his heart racing slightly.

"What is it?"

Asked the guard next to him as Archer slowly let down his guard.

"Nothing...must be my imagination."

Archer said just before an arrow struck the guard in the neck as he fell from the wall and out of the shadows came an entire warg pack armed to the teeth as they stormed the wall.

Wasting no time Storm Wind rushed to the bell tower sounding the alarm as the soldiers were roused from their sleep, scrambling for their weapons.

"ARM YOURSELVES!!!"

Shouted the commander as he began hacking away at the first batch that came at him and soon the whole fortress was in chaos. The wargs began swarming the gatehouse trying to overwhelm the guards with Archer picking them off one by one while Storm Wind joined the others fighting in the courtyard.

Weapons clashed and cries rang out as the battle raged on until at last the wargs were driven back with the fortress taking minimal damage. The commander ordered his troops to check for wounded and put out the fires set to some of the buildings.

Dawn rose and with it came sorrow, out of the one hundred recruits sent to the fortress twenty laid dead and many of them were good friends Storm Wind and the others knew from their training days, never before had they experienced such horror before last night and as he sat there looking upon his fallen comrades the commander came up behind him placing a hand on his shoulder with a look of understanding.

"Many more of us would be lying there son. Ya did good."

Though this was a moment to be proud of Storm Wind felt nothing but shame and began to wonder if what the commander said was true.

"Did I?"

He began to think and it was not long until a messenger was sent back to Canterlot informing the council of the recent attack and the loss of their troops with the commander growing concerned since the enemy had never advanced this far past the border before and knew something must've happened at one of the outposts near here.

"I need ten volunteers for a scouting mission. We're gonna find out where these mongrels came from now who's with me?"

At first the commander was met with nothing but silence until Storm Wind stood up spear in hand with Archer and Iron Forge right behind him with seven more joining in, their commander looked at them with pride seeing the fire in their eyes before dismissing them to prepare. Later at the armory the troops donned the best weapons and armor the fort had to offer.

Archer being a marksman only wore leather padding and a chain mail vest making him more mobile while Iron Forge wore heavy plating along with Storm Wind who chose to stick with his spear given to him by his mother before departing.

"Do we have anything resembling a plan?"

Asked archer grabbing a full quiver of arrows while Iron Forge grabbed a large battle axe giving a quick answer.

"March till we find em, kill em all."

The three friends then departed for the gate with the others before marching off towards the next outpost with their comrades cheering and saluting them and among them was Charm Caster who looked more concerned than proud seeing only a handful of them marching off to certain doom.

"It's a whole days march to the next outpost! You fall behind you get left behind! Move out!!"

The soldiers then stormed out of the front gate with great haste, the ground thundering beneath them and weapons held tightly in their grip with a few Pegasai flying overhead as scouts while the rest stayed with their leader while off in the distance the few remaining wargs watched closely grinning with anticipation before stealthily disappearing from sight marching in the same direction as the scouting party.

The End.
