The Great War
An Old Grudge
Previous ChapterWith the recovery of Commander Hurricane and the massive defeat dealt to the wargs in everfree forest all of Equestria began to feel safe, all but the commander who had witnessed her only son turn into a bloodthirsty monster and was starting to grow concerned as to how the war would affect him.
Storm Wind just sat silent and still, even as they neared the city gates, being showered with flower petals. Spring Breeze was more than happy to see her husband return as she greeted him with a welcome home kiss. He smiled only for a moment as he embraced his wife before making his way back to their home in silence, leaving everypony concerned.
"RRRRAGH!!!!"
Storm Wind threw a goblet across the garden in a rage. Recalling the rampage he unleashed back at the campsite, grabbing his head in frustration.
"WHAT IN TARTARUS IS GOING ON HERE?!?"
The now enraged Pegasus yelled at the top of his lungs just as Spring Breeze came onto the scene. Though frightened the mare approached her husband as he sat there holding his head in confusion.
"Storm Wind?" The sound of her voice and her gentle touch was all she needed the quell his rage. The surprised pegasus looked up to see his wife giving a gentle smile before helping him to their bed chambers knowing he needed the rest, especially after drinking so much wine. As the mare laid her weary husband on the bed a small tear fell from her face. She hated to see him so angry and confused after the incident at the camp.
"Spring Breeze?"
The mare gasped to see him awake so quickly and tried to wipe the tears from her face but it was too late. The young mares hand was gently grabbed by her husband who seemed ashamed for putting her in this state.
"Storm Wind what're you-MM!" Her voice was cut off by the feeling of his lips pressing against hers, clearly this was his way of apologizing for making her worry and her tears soon faded. Their kiss however was all she would get as Storm Wind drifted off to sleep but she was fine with that knowing he still cared for her, once he had settled down Spring Breeze decided to go see the one pony who could give her answers; Commander Hurricane.
As dawn rose the next day the commander sat in her chambers signing away the daily paperwork until her ink well ran dry. Once the daily documents and complaints had been taken care of the mare decided to step outside for some fresh air but to her surprise she found Spring Breeze waiting for her at the front gate of her villa.
"Spring Breeze! This is a surprise what brings you here?"
"It's um..." The young pegasus mare shied away for a moment knowing what she was about to bring up was a delicate subject.
"It's about Storm Wind."
"....I see."
Later that afternoon. A small picnic had been arranged for the two mares as they sat in the villa gardens with two guards keeping watch.
"Now tell me Spring Breeze. What do you wish to know?" The commander asked her daughter-in-law, folding her hands together.
"Where did this all start? Why does Gor'Zan hate your family so much?"
The commander gave a sigh of relief, like she had been expecting this question for some time.
"I think I should start...at the beginning."
At the borders of Northern Equestria was a small village that had been raided by the wargs. Among the flaming ruins was a female soldier who had been badly wounded in the fighting, her armor had been rent and both her wings had been badly broken. The wargs gazed at her hungrily, seeing the figure of the mare pegasai but before the first could lay his hands on her their chieftan stopped him cold.
"No. This one we leave unspoiled."
"According to our laws: None may deny me the spoils of our conquest!" The soldier argued just before the chief cleaved his head clean off his shoulders. Many of the others backed away in fear of the chieftans blade as well as his skill and before long the mare was taken prisoner, back to their stronghold in the mountains. After arriving the chief visited the mare in her cell to check on her recovery as well as give her food and drink.
As her wings began to heal the chieftan ordered her to be moved to his chambers, many of his men thought that he would have "First Taste" before handing her over. Instead he gave her a bed and a fresh set of clothes to keep her warm.
"Why are you helping me?" The mare asked as she turned to the warg before her.
"There is no honor in tormenting a defeated warrior, especially a women." He said in reply as the mare smirked before her turned around. Allowing her to change.
"My name is Gor'Zan. What is yours?"
"....Last Stand."
By her name alone he could tell she must've been the daughter of a noble and must've been in the battle to defend her lands by order of her parents. Over the course of months that followed Last Stand was treated as if she was one of their own and began to see a different side of her so called "Enemies", when she looked around she saw children at play, husbands and wives working together around the fort and even soldiers caring for their wounded comrades. They were not the savages they seemed to be and in time she became something of a friend to Gor'Zan who despite his brutish attitude seemed truly kind at heart.
One year later the whole fortress was abuzz with excitement but Gor'Zan was feeling nervous. He stood just outside of a small room hearing the muffled screams of Last Stand, as a the hours past one of the maids finally allowed him and there he saw his new wife holding their newborn child.
"Hello dear."
Last stand had fallen for the warg chieftan and soon came to be his wife. As she handed him their newborn, Gor'Zan felt like this was a blessing from his ancestors; Never before had a child been conceived of both pony and warg, as he lifted the sheets he found himself staring at a little foal who by all appearances seemed normal save for the single fang sticking out from his mouth.
"Say "hello" to daddy Dirk."
"Dirk?" The name of the child made the warg chuckle and surprisingly the baby too.
"Well he's gotta have a name doesn't he? plus it's the name of a weapon! perfect for our little warrior here."
The family joined in a cuddle as both Gor'Zan and last stand looked at their newborn foal, it seemed things would remain peaceful but one day everything changed. Gor'Zan and a hunting party had just returned from the everfree forest and upon their return they heard the cries of terror and smell of smoke filled the air. The stronghold was under attack!!
"TO THE FORTRESS!!! QUICKLY!!!"
Gor'Zan and his men ran as fast as their feet could carry them, dropping their camping equipment and drawing their weapons as they joined the fight. They had come under attack from a group of Pegasai baring the same symbol that Last Stand once bore, while the rest of the fort was in chaos the chieftan ran inside to get his wife and child to safety. As he came upon their room he heard the sound of arguing and the baby crying. There was someone in there with last stand.
"NOOO!!!!" The mare screamed at the top of her lungs as her husband came bursting into the room. Gor'Zans eyes became filled with horror as a blade pierced his wifes chest while she stood her ground in front of the babies crib. The one who had stabbed her wore a helmet with a visor, hiding his face and as he drew the blade from the slain mare they mysterious murderer turned his gaze upon the helpless infant crying for his parents.
"This abomination has no place in the world!" The soldier spoke coldly as he turned his blade into a stabbing position over the baby.
"NOOO!!!" Gor'Zan tackled the would be murderer away from his son. His eyes now flaring with pure rage.
"YOU WILL NOT TAKE MY SON FROM ME!!!" He roared in fury as a fight broke out. The two seemed to match each other move for move until with one lucky stroke Gor'Zan shattered his opponents blade, forcing him to flee. Despite every fiber in his being urging him to give chase the chieftan threw his sword aside and ran to his wife now lying in a pool of her own blood.
From the look alone he could tell that she had already passed on. Gor'Zan held her hand one last time before taking his child from the crib, the baby instantly calmed down as it giggled seeing his father before him. Dirk was the only thing Gor'Zan had left now and the only thing else that mattered now was getting revenge on the one who was responsible.
"Sir! we found something!" One of the soldiers called out as he handed him the shattered blade, on it was the name of the assailant who was responsible for his wifes death.
Stout Heart.
The End.
