I can’t be your Shining Armour anymore.
Inspired by Mandopony’s song ‘Shining armour’
“Huhhh” Shining let out a large sigh while looking at the night sky, a single tear escaped his eye and splashed on the balcony under his hooves. ‘ Oh Twilight how I miss you, sometimes I wish things could just go back, the days were we spent the whole day walking around Canterlot, grinning from ear to ear.’ Shining thought to himself.
Another tear escaped his eye leaving a streak in his white fur “You were so cute when you were young always galloping around and practicing new magic, whenever we ended up in the shopping district you’d always run straight to the book store first, you were such an inquisitive little filly.’
It was an early spring morning the weather patrol was out cleaning up what little clouds there were above Canterlot and Shining armour was walking through Canterlot with his little sister Twilight he didn’t know it yet but she was the most important pony in his life. It fell upon him to protect her from any harm that may befall her or any teasing or bullying. This was probably the reason he wanted to join up with the royal guard so much because to him Twilight was royalty.

“Hey big brother what are you looking at?”
“Oh nothing Twilie. Come on lets go grab a bite to eat.” Like always Shining Armour bought his little sister to the usual place ‘Donut Joes’ she always enjoyed those little sugary treats.
The adorable little smile on Twilights face was always the highlight of Shining armours day. Shining just sat there watching Twilight eating the treats with that adorable look on her face.

“I wish things could go back to the ways they were when I could stand up for you, buy you books and other treats, and just watch as you went around trying different sorts of magic. I was always so proud of you when you pulled a new one off and that smile on your face always lifted my mood no matter what had happened. Then there was the day when you earned your cutie mark. You had the goofiest smile on your face.’

There was a massive trembling all through Canterlot and a massive cracking and smashing sound. These sounds were caused by one little filly having an incredible burst of magic. One that turned her parents and the judges from ‘Celestias School for gifted Fillies’ into potted plants. It also turned a baby dragon into a full grown one on the blink of any eye.
This event caused widespread panic throughout Canterlot and the guards were hard pressed to explain the situation to all the panicking ponies. Shining armour was one of these guards running around trying to calm the ponies(He knew there was a magic incident but didn’t know who it was) of Canterlot as he’d recently been accepted as a guard in training. In that moment Shining armour realised how much he cared about Twilight, the only thing he could think was ‘is my little sister alright.’ As soon as this thought entered his mind that panic set in, he began running frantically around Canterlot searching every nook and until……
He came out of an alleyway near Donut Joes place and saw Twilight sitting there with mother and father laughing. Twilight saw Shining straight away and ran outside with a grin stretching from ear to ear it looked like the top half of her face was going to come off. She was so proud of her cutie mark and what made it even more perfect was the fact that it matched Shining’s cutie mark.
“Isn’t it great big brother.” Twilight said jumping and hugging Shinging armour
“I’m so glad you’re alright with all those tremors I thought you were hurt.” Shining said trying to hold back tears.
“Oh I did that much damage?” Twilight said with a sad look on her face.
“Wait that was you?” Shining said incredulously
“Yeah during my entrance exam I had a massive magic surge, and Princess Celestia accepted me as her personal protégé.” Twilight said again with that goofy smile.
“I’m so proud of you little sis. And I’m so glad you got accepted, and that you’re alright.” Shining said wiping his eyes.
“Are you crying big brother?” Twilight said looking worried again
“Just a little” he said with a sniff “I was so worried about you I thought you were hurt.”
“Don’t worry I’m okay big brother. And I have you looking after me the best guard in all of Canterlot.” Twilight said with a reassuring smile. Even so young she knew exactly how to cheer me up.

“Huh” Shining let out another long sigh and looked up into the sky again looking at the stars. Every dot reminded him of Twilight one of the pony he would give his life for without a moment’s hesitation.
At this point there was a consistent pattern of tears spattering the balcony, and now Shining was weeping. But then it hit him, Twilight had gotten stronger and no longer needed him and the last thing she would want would be this.
“Twilight I can’t be the one to protect you anymore, you’re much stronger than when you were last in Canterlot, you’re abilities probably surpass mine. You’re going to be fine without me. I never would have thought it but now I’m proud to say it. I can’t be your shining armour anymore! You’re growing up and moving on without me.”
‘But I can’t be your Shining armour anymore, even though it pains me to say it but you’ve out grown me and the need for me. But now I’m proud to say it you don’t need me anymore, you’re an amazingly powerful unicorn now and you’re paving your own path in life. I’ll miss you but I’ll always love you little sis.’
“Hey little sis are you feeling alone?”
“It’s been a while now since you left home”
“I’m guessing that you’re doing alright you were always so smart always so bright”
“And if you ever really needed me all you had to do was believe in yourself and take a chance”
“I’m so proud to say it now, I can’t be your Shining Armour anymore!”
“You don’t need my protection but well always have a connection”
