The Lunar Resistance
Ripples of Sadness
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe school bell rang and class was dismissed, "Well, that's all for today class. Have a nice day- Oh! Also, don't forget you have a test this Friday!" Cherilee called to the class as the fillies and colts of Ponyville left for the day. Freefall being one of them, his bright orange coat shone in the bright light of the afternoon sun. He extended his wings and threw himself into the air, wind whipping through his maroon mane.
Now far below him, the small village of Ponyville was as lively as ever, ponies bustled around, going about their days with smiles upon their faces. Lyra and Bonbon sat on a bench, the Cake's were delivering yet another large order of pastries, while a certain grey delivery pegasus drifted through the skies. Other pegasi worked to keep the skies clear, rushing the fluffy white clouds back and forth across the bright blue sky. Freefall soon found himself gliding along a familiar road. His emerald eyes drifted from one cozy-looking thatched roof to the next.
Home was a small two story cottage not unlike the other houses on the street. His mother greeted him with an affectionate nuzzle and a kiss to the forehead, afterwards Freefall proceeded to leap up the one set of stairs in his house, using his small wings to propel his small colt body forwards. He finally came to a stop in a familiar room, his room in fact. He set his saddlebags down on his bed, knowing that what little homework he had could wait until later. He trotted over to a nearby closet and proceeded to pull out a long cylindrical object.
A telescope...
Using his wings he skillfully opened the tripod on it's underside. He then rushed it over to a window, looking up at the rapidly fading sky with almost uncontrolled excitement. "C'mon Luna, gimme something to look at..." Freefall was, undoubtedly, a nightly enthusiast. He adored the night sky as if it were his own creation. The moon and paintbrush on his flank only further proving his nightly affections.
As the sky faded even more so, Freefall trotted back to the closet, retrieving three things: A worn paintbrush, a white square of flawless canvas, and an easel. He placed the three objects beside the telescope, briefly glancing out the window to check on the sky outside. The last item he retrieved, was safely tucked away underneath his bed. A small, wooden box, lined with scuffed and faded brass around the edges. He slowly and carefully pulled it out and undid the two latches that sat on either side of the matching brass handle. The top opened with hardly a sound, revealing a silver paintbrush not unlike the one that adorned his flank. Out of all the gifts given to him when he got his cutiemark, this was by far his most treasured. A gift from his father, Silver.
The orange colt closed the box delicately and ran his hoof over its worn surface. Fondly remembering the pride on his father's face as he was given the gift. He remembered his father's white mane and silvery coat as clearly as if he was standing in front of him, although he knew that could never be possible, Silver had been enlisted in the royal guard since Freefall's birth, serving the sun princess under an unbreakable oath of loyalty. He was relieved of duty when his neck was snapped during the Changeling siege in Canterlot, with one of his wings broken, there was nothing to stop the noble royal guard from plummeting to the ground far below the battle that raged in the skies above the pony nation's capital.
Freefall now sat beside his telescope, paint on a pallet and his brush held in between the primaries of his left wing. His cutiemark began to shimmer as the first few stars came out. He felt the stirring in his soul and quickly pressed his eye to the lens of the telescope, and seeing the stars beginning to emerge from the magenta hue of the sunset, he set to work in capturing Luna's masterpiece.
"There", Freefall sighed as he stared at the newly finished painting. His green eyes drifted from one part of the canvas to another, taking in every detail and grinning all the while. Satisfied with his work, he carefully took the painting and laid it on the floor to dry, briefly glancing at his previous work that hung around his room.
Then something happened. Freefall turned to gaze out of his window at the night sky, and felt sad. A deep sense of loss gripped his heart and shook his soul.
"Please forgive me...", spoke a soft voice in his mind.
