As a human, Nick marched Mellophone for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. After a bus crashes causing a terrible accident, Nick is put into a coma. His band-mates pray to any god to save him. Their prayers reach Celestia, Pony Goddess of the Sun, who appears and tells them that he will be spared, but he will live in Equestria if he so chooses. She wakes him and tells of her offer, and he accepts.

He wakes up the next day as a Unicorn with Music notes as a Cutie mark and is given the new name Silver Flair. Celestia gives him an apartment in Ponyville to live in while adjusting to Equestrian life. Upon arrival, he hears beautiful harp music next door. He goes to meet the musician and it happens to be Lyra.

They quickly form a friendship, Nick discovers his special talent is composing, so he often writes songs for Lyra to play.
