My flatmate is a vampire.
Chapter 1
Load Full StoryOctavia was almost as excited as vinyl was for Halloween, even if she didn't get in the mood quite as much. Octavia sat on her sofa listening to Beethoven's 9th symphony, Vinyl had yet to come home from the club that she was working one of her DJ-ing gigs at. As friendly as Octavia and vinyl were to each other they still didn't appreciate each others taste in music enough to watch the other a work.
Octavia who’s last name happened to be Melody was 2nd chair cellist only to her mentor and teacher Mr. Psych in the London symphony orchestra. She projected a dignified, calm, yet slightly snotty air, one that you might attribute to a higher class individual. She almost always wore the same light grey vest over the same light brown dress shirt, as well as her signature pink bow tie. Vinyl however was nearly her polar opposite seeing as she played small gigs at clubs near the main part of London, she usually played dub step, but included some elements of pop, and rock in her work. Vinyl much like Octavia wore nearly the same thing thing nearly every day, even if it was significantly less “professional”. Vinyls wardrobe consisted mainly of white hoodies and blue shirts to go along with her white pants.
Vinyl and Octavia had met at college, Octavia had taken the concept of classical music class while Vinyl had taken the concept of modern music class. This however was not the reason they met, that was thanks to their commonly shared class, Psychology. The teacher of this class, Mr. Psych (The irony, right?) who also taught Octavia's music class introduced the two musicians and watched their friendship blossom.
Vinyl had finally come home from “work”, hearing this Octavia took off her headphones and welcomed vinyl home. The two friends shared a flat in central London, splitting the rent worked well for the both of them, “Hey Octi’, wassup?” Vinyl said taking off her red-tinted sunglasses,“reminiscing over old times to some real music.” replied Octavia, putting emphasis on the word “real”. Mocking each others music was a common occurrence in the household,
“Oh? let me guess, Debassy?” queried Vinyl purposely mispronouncing the famous composers name,“Just like you to not know how to pronounce such a famous name! You never did pay attention in school.”
The two smiled at each other, the teasing was only a fun little game after all.
“how was work? Asked Octavia as she usually did,
“It went pretty well, although i might have turned the music a bit too loud…” Vinyl trailed off at the end a look of embarrassment on her face,“What did you do this time?” Octavia replied exasperatedly, she knew that the crowd at the clubs could get a bit hectic sometimes, but that shouldn't give Vinyl cause to stoke the flames.
“I blew one of their light fixtures, took almost half my pay to fix. It looked awesome though!” Vinyl ended with a short, exited laugh.
Later that afternoon, Octavia was cooking dinner on the oven, that night dinner consisted of Spaghetti and spaghetti sauce. It was a fairly simple meal, but Octavia didn't mind, she was fairly certain Vinyl wouldn't either. After the spaghetti was done Octavia sprinkled some garlic over the top and set the plates for dinner, with a side of tea. Vinyl came dashing into the dining room, making Octavia jump.
“Jeez Vinyl what was that for?” scolded Octavia. “You nearly gave me a heart attack!” continued Octavia. “Sorry ‘Tavi I’m just hungry.” mumbled Vinyl, sitting down at the table. Octavia also sat down across from Vinyl and started to sip her tea. After a couple seconds, she noticed Vinyl staring at her. “Yes? Is something wrong?” She asked, still annoyed at her friend. “Umm. this has garlic in it.” replied Vinyl expectantly. Octavia looked at her friend, a blank stare on her face. “ there's some extra noodles and sauce on the counter, go make yourself another plate if its such a big deal.”
Octavia should have gotten used to Vinyl’s antics by now, but they were just so weird. One minute she’d be chowing down on a steak, next minute she’d be freaking out about the garlic that Octavia had put on it, Octavia sometimes swore that vinyl was a vampire, she never left the house without a hoodie on, not to mention her sunglasses. Vinyl loved those sunglasses, she wore them whenever she went outside, or went to the club to play one of her gigs. The glasses themselves were red lensed aviators, with a dull black rim, vinyl had owned them since before she even met Octavia.
After Vinyl got herself a different plate of food, one without garlic on it, her and vinyl sat on the sofa and watched Twilight. Octavia just nodded and agreed to vinyl’s unusual selection. Octavia herself didn't care for the Twilight series, she much preferred Supernatural. After the movie started Octavia didn't really pay attention, she just sat there nodding her head whenever Vinyl angrily criticized the movie, retorting about how “unrealistic” the vampires were, and how “werewolves” Didn't go around without shirts all the time.Octavia was getting slightly annoyed with how openly critical Vinyl was being, “Vinyl, why are you being so judgmental! How would you even know how Vampires and Werewolves act, its not like their real!” Octavia finally blurted out, her voice raised slightly. Vinyl just looked back at her, a strange glint in her eyes, as if she had the perfect response to Octavia's answer. “Alright Octi’ I'm sorry.” Vinyl finally replied, “How about we just watch something else?” Octavia thought that was a good idea so she just nodded and reclined back in her seat.
Early that morning Octavia made omelets, remembering to keep out the garlic she would have otherwise used in the meal. Vinyl appeared out of her room just as Octavia plopped down the omelet on the table. “Don’t worry, no garlic” Octavia answered Vinyl’s unasked question, if not a little bit sarcastically. nevertheless, Vinyl was thankful and and showed it with a little smile.”So Octi’, tomorrow's halloween. Are we doing anything?” Vinyl asked, “Well I thought that we could stay awake late in the night watching scary movies, that is if you don’t get tired and fall asleep!” Octavia replied. Vinyl looked at Octavia hesitantly, before boastfully responding, “Of course ill watch some movies with you! As long as i get to pick a couple.” Octavia looked at her suspiciously, “Is something the matter? Do you already have plans? Its really quite alright if you do.” Vinyl looked at Octavia, “No, its nothing, i was just thinking about something else.”
Octavia loaded her cello onto her back, the cello itself was a work of beauty, it had a intricately carved neck leading to the base of the instrument, and right in the middle of the main part emblazoned in black was a large trebleclef. Octavia’s parents had bought the cello for her when she first heard of the instrument and decided that she was going to build her life around music. The cello had cost a fortune, yet, Octavia's parents weren’t exactly hurting in terms of money.
As Octavia reached the Barbican Hall, the location of this afternoons performance she saw her Old Mentor, Mr. Psyche unloading his Cello onto the stage, she went over and greeted him, the curtains were still drawn allowing them a small amount of time to converse. after she got settled into her place, cello in one hand, bow in the other, she waited for the conductor. As the conductor stepped on the stand, Octavia raised the bow until it just barely touched the cello’s strings. The conductor started waving his baton, drawing out the rhythm, and allowing the instruments to follow suite. As Octavia and her mentor started playing, Octavia started thinking about her suspicions of vinyl being a vampire, honestly, it made a lot of sense. Vinyl never went out of the flat unless she was wearing a sweatshirt always with the hood up, and she always had her glasses on, and then their was the fact that she freaked whenever there was garlic in her food. The more Octavia thought about the possibility the more she convinced herself that Vinyl, was indeed a vampire. Octavia snapped out of her thoughts as a violin in front of her broke a string, creating a loud screech that made Octavia cringe, bringing her back to the Symphony-Orchestra hall.
Octavia put a DVD in the slot of the machine in front of her, it was finally Halloween night, and she and Vinyl were about to watch Nosferatu. This of course only furthered Octavia's suspicions of Vinyls vampirism, yet vinyl was to scared to ask, for chance that she made a fool of herself. As Octavia sat down, she noticed Vinyl still had her glasses on, she just kept to herself though, it wasn't too big of a deal after all. About halfway through the movie, Vinyl paused it, “Vinyl? what are you doing?” asked Octavia,
“The screen is too dark!” replied Vinyl in an exasperated tone,
“Vinyl… you do realize you’re wearing sunglasses don't you…”
“Yeah! but that doesn't change the screen if you ask me!” replied vinyl in an even more exasperated tone.
“Vinyl. Take your glasses off.”
“No!”
“Take them off!”
“No!” Octavia was sick of this, she got up, marched over to Vinyl and plucked her glasses right off of her face. And then she stared in shock. Vinyls eyes were red, pure bright red, as if someone distilled blood with water and put it were Vinyl’s normally blue irises were. Vinyl hissed at Octavia and started covering her eyes with her arm, “Give them back!” she shouted in a strange almost distorted voice. Octavia wasn't about to deny Vinyl her glasses any longer so she tossed them back to their proper owner.
Octavia stared at Vinyl, recovering from her earlier shock. Vinyl was facing in Octavia's direction, but her head was down. “You're a vampire.” Stated Octavia rather bluntly. “Yea, i spose’ its no use hiding it anymore.” Vinyl replied dully, forgetting her usual energetic manner. At that moment Vinyl looked up sharply at Octavia, “And you’re the only one that knows.” Vinyl started walking towards Octavia showing off her fangs and taking off her glasses, her eyes were still red, and they were looking right at Octavia's throat. “Its been awhile since I've had a good meal.” Vinyl growled advancing on Octavia. Just then Octavia couldn't help it anymore, and she fainted.
