Clover's notes
I write this in hopes that future generations will be prepared.
Since our relocation to Equestria, life was good after the defeat of the windigoes, but it only lasted for a short time. The ponies tribes had joined their three kinds, but we were not out of trouble. After months of arrival, we came face to face with a new threat, something that we have never seen before with our own eyes. We had only read about them in myths and legends. Even my mentor Starswirl the beared was unable to see this forthcoming danger.
They were the Sirens, as our ancestors had called them. Not much was known, other then their ability to sing and charm ponies with that music. It was then we learn we were not the first ponies to settle on this new land. Many of our own kind, and a forth kind previously unknown had been in this land for decades. But the disharmony had spread through the three previously known clans long before our arrival. How the Windigoes hadn't gotten here ahead of ourselves is beyond me, but it seems my friends from the other two tribes and myself were enough to ward them off for the time being.
It was nearly too late that we learned the true identity of the Sirens. Ancient ponies had turned them into myth, but nature and magic had created something far more terrifying. A species, which had brought the once powerful human race to their knees. Who's wrath had awoken other chaotic forces that had recently been brought to our tribes' attention. The human race was once thought to be fabled and no more then legend. And yet, they were more powerful then ourselves in the stories we were told. It turns out that the stories of them were true. Long before even my mentor was born, the Human race had ruled over all corners of the globe. They were prosperous for many generations lasting millenniums beyond my comprehension. However their reign came to a bitter end when they accidentally had awoken three Sirens. Mankind thought they had a promising chance to defeat them... it was not so. They had weapons that had shot fire back at the singing entities, but in the end it only helped the Sirens' cause.
Their last hope had rested with the ancient pony clan we now know as the Alicorns. There were four of them. Man had only learned of their existence when their race was nearly finished. One had control over our celestial sun, another over the moon, and the third who had mothered them, was in control of the earth and the cosmos itself. The forth was only a child and had not earned her special talent yet, but she bared a striking resemblance to that of our three tribes' crystal cousins in the north.
The three elder Alicorns saw the struggles of the human race and knew there was only one thing that could help them. They created another realm separate to their own, but with one gateway to help them get through. It was a realm much similar to our own, but a place where humans would be safe and able to repopulate. However, seeing that the numbers of the human race had dwindled, the Alicorns cast a spell, which would have a human version of every pony in existence or to come, to be the current and next generation and so on, including the two Alicorn sisters and the younger Alicorn. So even now, there is a human version of myself and my mentor in this other realm. The Alicorn who controlled the Earth and Cosmos was now one with them, watching over her kin. She is still alive, but she is not strong enough to take her physical pony form, and so, even now, she watches over us in the land we walk on and the air we breath, and the stars that we see dance in the night sky. This had been the sacrifice she made to save our human counterparts, who from what I've learned have no recollection of what happened before they went to their new realm.
This however, we found out, did not even phase the three Sirens. We discovered that they feed of our pony magic, much like the tyrannical Tirek, that dwells a kingdom away with his brother Scorpan. So as far as I can tell, saving the human race had almost been for nothing. But my mentor Starswirl wouldn't have it. He made a stand against them. I had not anticipated how much power he had, but it seems the unity and harmony of our three tribes had provided us enough magical strength to beat them with a counter song as your say. He knew he was risking a great deal by what he preformed, sending them into the human realm, but he had done calculations that their magic would be rendered harmless to the humans if there was no pony magic to feed off of.
Not long after he banished them to the human realm, I had made a trip there through the portal, after the princesses had lent me a book to take with to keep in contact just in case anything should go amiss. I was careful not to bump into my human self, but after 30 moons I had realized that even though the Sirens were feeding off of whatever magic the humans had, it was not enough to make them dangerous, and seemed to have no ill effect on humans, other then some harmless disagreements. I soon let Starswirl know of my findings, and he was then relieved to hear what had transpired. I regret to say that that was only one problem solved.
A few years after the banishment of the three Sirens to the other world, I had walked into my Mentor's study one day. The Pony I had known, who had created over 200 spells, was missing. I had seen him that morning, and I know he didn't walk out the door. And he never likes to teleport out, so something was wrong. I had no idea what. All I saw was an unfinished spell which was sure to be another masterpiece of his. I did not want to throw it away since I knew how Starwirl felt about his spells, even if left unfinished. And he could be back at any time, but when he was gone, it was usually for a good while, so I took it to the Alicorns, whom we declared to be our new rulers, and had them store it away until the time was right to have need of finishing it.
Not long after my mentor's disappearance, a new powerful being had shown up. I had never seen anything like him before. It had the head of a pony, a talon, a paw, a cloven hoof, two very different looking antlers, an elongated body of who knows what, and a dragon's tail, with some sort of tuft, maybe a very short version of a pony's tail at the end, but it acted like another claw, or paw, or whatever it was. I came to call it a draconaques, as did the Princesses.
All this entity seemed to do was spread chaos and disharmony, and he found it amusing, as if it was some sort of play time. He went by the name Discord. One can only guess why, but that was his name. The royal sisters had turned to the elements of harmony to outwit him. They had been gems of stone that embodied all six elements: kindness, laughter, generosity, loyalty, honesty, and the most elusive element, magic.
With these, they were able to imprison Discord in stone, and he stands as a statue in their garden these days. We had learned not too long after his defeat, that he had befriended Tirek. Scorpan was able to see through his ways though and was thankfully on our side and warned us before Tirek had gotten his way. He was ultimately banished to Tartarus, under the watchful eye of Cerberus and Scorpan returned to his own kingdom.
I do not know what the whereabouts of my mentor are at this time, but I feel one day I will find him. I write these notes, so that future generations are prepared. The Sirens remain the greatest threat to our kind, and all other creatures that dwell just within or beyond our borders, anything from dragons to griffons. If the Sirens ever find a way to return, it could mean great danger, but these should prepare you, should you ever face them.
The Sirens strongest weapon is of course their voices. What is needed is to counteract them, is with a song that is transformed into a spell at the same time. This is what Starswirl used and what we must use in the future. But you must not let them be near when you have fallen into disharmony, they can sense such magic, which was why I had to make haste through the portal when it had opened back to our world. I do not know if they are aware of the portal, but we must not let them best us. We have the means to make sure that they do not threaten anyone ever again. Their starving now, and with that, they will be more dangerous then ever. But we have to prepare. We have to outlast them and fight back. My sources tell me the three we encountered were just adolescents, which age far more slowly then any creature aside from Alicorns and there are many more who have yet to be awakened again and are far more lethal. Be vigilant descendants of my race and the race of Earth Ponies and Pegasi, do not let the years of peace to come render you unprepared. The Alicorns can only do so much, and.........
Present Day
Twilight had been looking through some previously restricted areas of the library for books to help her in her days as a princess. As she pulled another book out, a tattered, old looking book, much like that of the pony sisters of the old castle fell onto the floor. "What is this?" She asked rhetorically.
She soon opened the book and read the pages. When she finished, she gasped and dropped the book, before saying, "Oh sweet Celesita and Luna, I've got to warn the other Princesses!"
She galloped to the throne room of the royal sisters to tell them what she had discovered.
Author's Note
The end. This is only a one shot, but I may decide to continue, so I'll leave it incomplete at this time. This is something that has been at the back of my head for a while, and it came to me after watching a scene from Reign of Fire. Basically I made my own theory on the origin of the Sirens, and why no humans aside from the EQGverse are ever seen in relation to the show. I know it's somewhat dark, and I thought i'd have a little cliffhanger towards the end in Clover the Clever's notes. Hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please leave a positive comment and constructive criticism below for me. As always, stay tuned for updates.
Luna: Okay, now it's time for bed sweetie.
Me: But Mama, I not sweepy. *I rub my eyes and yawn.*
*Luna begins humming Children of the night and I am out like a light*
Luna: Works every time.
Me: Zzzzzzzzzz.
*She carries me to the crib as I sleep on her shoulder.*
