A New World, An Old Grudge
It’s dark. It’s always been dark. Not always, just for a long time. There was light. There was happiness and joy that filled me. I felt fluffy and warm inside as the sun rose each morning and the light hit my beady eyes, filling me with joy and excitement for a new day.
It’s cold. It’s been cold for a long time. It wasn’t always cold. In the night I was tucked under a warm blanket and he’d snuggle me close. Hold me tightly, keeping me safe. I kept him safe. It was a pact that could not be broken. He said so.
I’m awake. I wasn’t always awake. For the longest time I dreamed. Was it all a dream? No. It just feels like it. A warm, cozy place. Where I could have smiled endlessly. Everything was perfect. Now I’m awake. Now I smile endlessly. It’s not a joyful smile. Behind it is bitterness, and I can taste it. It tastes like wrath, like hatred.
Now I’m tired. I’m falling asleep. I cannot say for sure if I have ever slept before. Maybe I’m waking up.
“Rest now my children, for when you awake a whole new world shall be your home.”
I opened my eyes groggily, yawning away the sleep I had just woken from. It was dark as always. The bedding I had made felt different. The comfortable burrow I had made in the small space was gone. I was lying on a pile. A pile of trash.
I rose up to sit and looked up. It was dark as always. The outlines of the trash can’s corners were visible and I took in my surroundings. This wasn’t my home. I raised my hand and stood up while holding the lid which I then pushed open. Light filled the small space instantly and i squinted my eyes.
How long has it been since I last gazed the outside world? Days? Months?
When I opened my eyes and looked around, I didn’t see the familiar back alley I had taken residence in. No, it was a back alley alright but not the same. The walls on my either side were white marble instead of the gray bricks I was used to seeing. In front of me a street opened at the end of the alleyway and behind me was a wall. Good. There was no way I’d get surprised from that way.
With my immediate surroundings noted, I took into air. Floating out of the trash can I set my small dark gray legs on the ground and stared at the street. I needed to know where I was.
My legs lifted off the ground again, floating a few inches from the ground as I made towards the street. I grabbed the corner on my left with both hands and peeked at the street. Ponytas. So many Ponytas that I couldn’t count. They were running around screaming and yelling as a Charizard walked down the street. I figured they had woken up like that. Multicoloured and fiery manes hidden under fireproof wigs. I chuckled at the sight. Bastards deserved it. My eternally twisted smile matched my mood for the first time in ages.
As one ran past the alleyway I noticed it had a crown painted on its flank. I couldn’t suppress my joy at the situation and I laughed, pointing at the Ponyta like I had a friend beside me who’d laugh as well. It noticed me, eyes going wide and backpedaling away from me. It screamed. Well, she, but the damn mon doesn’t deserve being called by it’s gender.
I furrowed my brow and scowled. I pointed a stubby finger at it and yelled out loud, “Hey! Got a problem with Ghost-types!?”
It only screamed louder and ran away screaming absurdities, “Aah! Monsters! Ghosts! The end is nigh!” I looked after the bastard with a scowl. Typical human lovers, no tolerance for my kind. I scoffed and turned back, with my good mood now ruined I had no reason to stay out. I’d rather wait until nightfall and have a look at my surroundings then.
Hovering my way to the trash can, I took note of a few of the trashbags moving. Trubbish. No doubt there’d be a Garbodor nearby as well. Making acquaintance with my neighbours was the least of my worries. They’d get a nasty Will-o-wisp to the face if they bothered me.
I floated up and into the small trash can, it was no home, but it had to do. I grabbed the open lid and slammed it shut when I descended inside and started shifting the trash to make for a nice and comfortable spot which I’d wait in. That was something I hated. I couldn’t sleep, and as far as I was concerned, I had never slept in my entire life.
As I lied down on my side in the contents of the trash can, I started thinking. That’s all I did really. Aside from shooing away the occasional trainer or pokemon who dared to disturb me, I never did anything. Just waited. Waited for that bastard to come by.
My life was a blur of darkness and noises from the outside that infiltrated my home. Time didn’t have a meaning to me and I cursed Dialga for it. Not that I cared. There was only one thing that I cared about, and that was revenge. I thought that it would come soon, as long as I waited patiently.
“I told you, he’s in there. I saw him!” It was a high pitched voice, similar to his. A male child, I presumed. That or a girl. The zipper that kept my mouth closed tightened, gritted together. I hated children. They’d act like your friend and then throw you away like the trash that you are.
A knock. The impact didn’t sound hard. More of a thump. I figured it must have been one of the Trubbish. They weren’t knocking my new abode around like a Garbodor I had the displeasure to meet a long time ago. A Will-o-wisp followed by a Hex showed that bastard what for. I figured the same trick would work here. Show these idiots who’s boss.
I rose up and peeked out from the bin, lifting the lid slightly. My pink eyes glared down at the offenders. Two Trubbish, as I expected. I darted my eyes between them before growling, “What do you want brats?” They flinched away and looked at each other.
I could see the doubt in their eyes. They were scared, and rightfully so. I was a force to be reckoned with, and I assumed they sensed it too. What caught me off guard was their question, “Do you know where we are?” I could hear the fear and uncertainty in their voice. They were sincere. I’d seen this before with… him…
How did they not know where they were? If they didn’t know, how the hell should I? I’ve just found myself in an unfamiliar trash can that most certainly wasn’t my home. “The hell should I know? Go ask your mommy or something.” I slowly closed the partially open lid as I spoke, still glaring at the pair. That must have looked cool.
I lied down in the heap of trash again to wait out the day. I closed my eyes and heard the pair outside, “Gee, what a grouch...” They shuffled around the alley for a few minutes. Don’t know what for, nor did I care. The time started to flow quicker. I could feel it. Hours could have passed as the occasional scream or shout came from the street. It all blurred together.
“Where’s mommy?”
My eyes snapped open and I stared at the dark wall right in front of me. I’ve heard that voice. Sounds familiar. He’s here. I phased through the lid above me and hovered a few feet above the ground looking for the sound of the voice. My eyes fixated on the pair from before and they looked back at me in terror. I thought…
I let out a sigh and lowered my arms to my side, I could feel a Shadow Claw fizzle out. I didn’t know I was about to use it. The pair cowered and sniffled as they watched me descend and phase back into the trash can.
They were lost. I was most likely lost too. I’d explore the surrounding area after midnight. I can’t stand mons and people just staring at me like a monster. It’s easier to live in the night, less of those and more of my kind. Of course the other Ghost-types didn’t really understand me, but no one did really.
It’s dark. It’s noisy. The hours ticked by as the glorious moon soon ascended into the sky and light up the world with its beautiful array of stars. Not yet. It’s too noisy. I’ll wait for the soothing silence to settle.
