Adagio didn’t understand-no, she couldn’t understand.

She had been waiting outside of Canterlot High for hours, her patience wearing thin as evident to her tapping her boot against the cement repeatedly. Aria was suppose to be here like she usually does after class, singing near the basketball courts and soccer field so that she can stir up trouble and feed off of the student’s energy. Adagio knew about it because she had seen her do it more than once before, and had even joined with her on it one time; it was together they learned a bit more about each other, noticing how similar they are than they tend to show. They shared some laughs, some nods, and a good meal too.

They certainly… bonded, for lack of a better term.

Adagio has suggested that they should do this again, which Aria agreed to, giving a day and time, which was today and approximately two or three hours ago. And all she had been doing was standing outside watching the Wonderbolts practice their games, her mind too irritated by the fact of Aria not being here for her to sing and feed off of the students’ energy.

“Screw it,” she uttered under her breath as she reached into her pocket and took out her cell-phone. After dialing Aria’s number, she put it up to her ear and waited for her to pick up… impatiently.

“Yeah, what?” spoke a gruffly feminine voice.

“Don’t ‘yeah, what?’ me,” retorted the siren leader. “We’re supposed to meet here at school again like last time, and I’ve been waiting for hours! Where are you?”

There was brief moment of silence, enough for Adagio call out Aria’s name again. “Oh yeah, that. I got caught up in other things and it just slipped my mind, so I’m already home right now,”

“What other things?”

“Personal things,”

Her resistance was now starting to annoy her. “Like what?” Adagio asked again, sounding more annoyed this time.

“None of your business,” she felt an equally annoyed tone in Aria’s voice, causing her to grit her teeth.

“It’s my business now,” she raised her voice, not caring who heard her, though there wasn’t really much of anyone around campus at this time. “I’ve been standing out here doing nothing but waiting for you! I demand an explanation, Aria!”

“Look, I’m sorry, Adagio, alright?” Aria raised her voice back. “It just slipped my mind. We can do this again another time, okay? Just come home already; Sonata’s getting hungry and I don’t want to order from out again.”

Adagio put a hand to her forehead and fought back the urge to let out a furious scream. ‘No, you’re better than this, Adagio. This petty anger is beneath you.’

The worst she let out was an annoyed, but very much tired shrug before responding. “Alright, I’ll be home soon.”

She didn’t give Aria the chance to speak, hanging up her phone and putting it back in her pocket. Her thoughts drifted as she left school and followed the path they always took to get home, thinking back on why her conversation with Aria went the way it did. Not wanting them doing something dangerous or stupid was one thing, but this was something else entirely, so why was she getting so worked up over it? It wasn’t like they had an amazing time together that felt like a breath of fresh air after years and years of being bitter and feeding off of scraps of energy just to get by; it wasn’t as if they didn’t find out they a lot of compatible similarities with each other; it wasn’t like anything didn’t just click or…

Adagio stopped herself right there, eyes widen over her newfound epiphany. A realization that made her chest pound and her face warm with blood. It was a feeling she never thought she would possibly experience with one of her lackeys.

‘Do… do I like Aria that way?’

It was strange, frightening even, but somehow it seemed to make the most sense. Out of all the creatures she has ever tried dating, both in this world and in Equestria, none of them have ever… clicked with her like Aria did in a single day. But not only did it seem to make sense, it also felt right: it had to be right. Sure, it could easily just be a simple little crush, but she has had crushes before in her past and as she had already gone over, they didn’t click with her like Aria did.

‘But what am I going to do about this?’ was what Adagio asked herself. Sure, they got along well the other day, but Aria is still the same Aria she’d always known, usually being her grumpy self, being skeptical and complaining but never contributing, and honestly thinks she could be a better leader than her. ‘No, stop worrying yourself, Adagio!’ a voice yelled inside her head. ‘I’ve been through harder stuff than this. Aria isn’t a challenge. It might take some time, but I can find what makes her tick and use that to my advantage. Oh, yes, it’ll be what it always has been; if I want something, it will always end up mine.’

She let her lips curl up into her iconic grin, her ego swelling with newfound confidence, as she could see her house just around the corner. Already in her head she was cooking up ideas of what she could do to woo Aria before she realized that she was by now already walking up the front yard. She could hear chatting and laughter on the other side of the front door as she reached into her pocket and pulled out her key and fidgeted with them a little before successfully sliding it into the lock and turning it. The laughter became louder when she opened the door, kicking off her boots and walked into the living room. Both Aria and Sonata came within sight, laughing about something probably stupid, until from out of the corner of her eye, Adagio saw something that made her lose her breath.

Her two lackeys were sitting together very closely on the couch, Aria’s hand around Sonata’s waist as the hyper siren was leaning in towards Aria’s cheek to kiss her.

Kiss her?

And Aria’s accepting it?!

Adagio was frozen in place, her lips parched and parted slightly to express her shocking surprise. Time seem to have slowed down and the world around her seemed to have disappear, with only the scene in front of her being the only thing she could see. Her brain numbed and ached trying to process the whole thing, but at the same time, it was also trying to push the whole thing away, trying in futility to deny the fact that it was happening. Somehow she wanted it to stop even though she knew that she couldn’t.

“What?” Aria’s voice brought Adagio back to reality, shaking her head and looking again at the two girls who were now looking straight at her.

“Nothing,” Adagio replied dryly and walked into the kitchen to get something to drink. She was still processing over how out of all possibilities and probability can something like this happen. ‘Sonata and Aria… kissing? But how? How?!’ was what was going through her mind ad nauseam. It’s completely ridiculous and nonsensical to her. Aria and Sonata never got along, both being polar opposites of each other; why are they suddenly being buddy-buddy together? This intimate together? Do they like each other? How in the world could she not have noticed this before?

And why would Aria be with Sonata instead of her?!

She shook her head, surprised by the way she was thinking. Her face felt hot with blood racing through her veins, and her head was pounding from all of the built up confusion. She turned on the sink faucet to run her hands through it and then wipe some water against her forehead to cool off the heat.

Adagio thought the rest of the night would help put her at ease, only for it to prove her wrong.

Sonata was kind enough to cook dinner tonight for them this time, but Adagio couldn’t bring herself to look at her in the eyes, for if she did it would immediately bring back what happened earlier. She tries focusing her attention on Aria, only to keep turning her gaze back to her food whenever the abrasive Dazzling felt like she was being watched. Adagio tried asking her of what would be the proper time to have another hang out, but Aria gave a rather half-assed answer, more or less telling her “I don’t know.”

Even after dinner, Adagio still didn’t felt any better. Tonight was her turn to wash dishes, but that wasn’t what's bothering her. No, what got to her was the fact that she could still see Aria and Sonata together in the living room from the window-like hole in the kitchen wall above the sink. They were awfully close to each other, clearly enjoying each others' company. Her eyes never left them, fixed in a bitter glare.

But it was much more than that. In the back of her mind, she asked herself why she’s suddenly feeling this way towards them. It carried on through the rest of the night up to where all three departed to their own bedrooms.

“Why won’t these damn thoughts leave me alone?” Adagio snapped as she fell back on her bed, undoing her belt and then throwing off her vest. She took off her hair band, letting her massive bush of hair fall down past her rear. Eventually she was completely undressed and had fetched a gown from her closet.

Still, the events from earlier continued to persist, never leaving her mind; by this point, it was torment for her.

“Aria…” she whispered to herself, trying her best to think back to that day when they hung out together, singing together and feeding off negative energy, laughing at the expense of others, and so on. Those fond memories reminded her of her feelings for Aria and wanting nothing more to get together with… wait, that’s it!

She now knew why she was feeling this way.

“I’m… jealous of Aria being with Sonata instead of me?”

As much as Adagio hates to admit it, it made the most sense to her. Her feelings for the other siren, to her shock at seeing her with Sonata in an intimate moment; it all seemed to fit together. But that would mean Sonata won out in the end though, right?

Adagio chuckled at the ridiculous notion, the idea of being beaten by that idiot of all people. “Never… I won’t give up that easily,” she said to herself as she pulled the covers over her as if she was trying to hide a most sinister smile from the world.

‘It’s not over yet. Sonata is just an unexpected obstacle in my way, but that doesn’t change anything. Like I’ve said before, if I want something I will stop at nothing to get it. Just wait, Aria; no matter what it takes or how long it will take, I will you make you mine. All mine!’

Author's Note

A friendly gift for Lesbian Adagio Dazzle for Hearts and Hooves Month.
Originally it was going to be a full one-shot, but decided to split it into a 2-parter instead. Reason was that the second half of what was going to happen was forming a stark contrast to the writing format of the first half, which I felt would look rather jarring to readers.
Stay tune for part 2, where things will get really nasty...
