Waiting for the Sun to Set
The sun was destine to lower over the land of Equestria soon. The air was calm and there were few clouds in the sky. The late afternoon mid summer air was warm kinds of cool that was comfortable to stand in. In the small town of Ponyville sat the newest princess's castle. It was massive and made of purplish blueish crystal that came up and bent up and over a few times. Creating elaborate details as if it were a natural crystal formation. Atop one of the higher balconies sat a familiar purple unicorn. A unicorn who's name had been spoken of by many many ponies over the last few years. Twilight Sparkle. She sat on her rear with soft purple hooves resting on the guardrail of the crystal balcony. Her eyes, glazed over in thought, gazed out into the distance at the horizon - at the sun slowly making its way towards that horizon to be lost and replaced by the moon.
Twilight had been sitting here alone for a while now. Pinkiepie, Rainbowdash, Rarity, and Fluttershy were all busy doing other personal things while Twilight was left to have some alone time. Soft clip-clopping of calm but sturdy hoof steps came clacking over the crystal. They drew closer and closer until the door to the balcony slowly opened. Applejack's head poked in through the open door. She then calmly sat next to Twilight who was well aware of her friend's presence.
"What's wrong, Sugar Cube?" Applejack asked with a gentle tone. That adorable suthern drawl still thickly laced in her words.
Twilight didn't move. She kept staring at the slowly setting sun for a while before speaking slowly, "I'm afraid of what's going to happen..."
"What do you mean, 'what's going to happen'?" Applejack asked with a curious tilt of her head.
"I mean. Us. The elements of harmony. Are we a magical fluke? Do we keep regenerating over the years? Do 6 ponies always have these qualities at any given time?... What does that mean for us?"
Applejack took a long while to think about that before responding. "I don't know, Sugar Cube. But I do know that as long as I have you, the rest of us, my family an' mah farm, I'm happy."
"I know that, AJ..." Twilight paused for a moment before finally turning her head. "What I mean is... I'm afraid of what's far down the road. When you guys all grow old and I'm left to watch you all die."
Applejack's eyes widened at that. "Twilight... Don't be thinkin' about that. We're here now, and that's all that matters. As long as we're together I don't think there's anything that can pull us apart."
Twilight almost began to smile. Her lips threatened to curve at either corner. Her deep purple eyes began to fill with small beads of teary water in the sides.
"I... I know AJ... But I'm still scared."
"Don't be afraid, Twi. The way ah see it is... Well, there's no reason to be thinkin' about that right now, right? We're all still here, aren't we? We're all still happy. An' you should be too! Don't be worryin' about what's gonna happen. Try an' be as happy as you can now. Make the most of it while it lasts."
Twilight's eyes moved to her hooves before she turned her head again and stared at the sun that was now half way set. The sky had turned orange with big bright streaks of beautiful red pinks and purples shooting in all directions. It was like one big last hurrah before Luna's grand and gorgeous night sky filled the air with stars and a magical moon. The two ponies sat together for the longest time in silence as they watched the sun set completely. Twilight rubbed her eyes gently afterwords and stood up.
"Thank you, AJ. I think I needed to realize that sooner or later. You are a great friend." Twilight gave a small smile to her orange friend.
Applejack couldn't help but blush and smile back, dipping her head a little and glancing to the side. "Aw shucks, I'm just doin' what any good friend would... So wha'deya say we go round up the gang an' we play a few board games or somethin'?"
"I'd like that." Twilight responded before opening the door to the balcony with a glowing blob of magic that engufled the handle and her horn in a purple aura.
Twilight walked through first. Applejack took a moment to gaze back at the horizon where the sun just was - now replaced with stars as far as the eye can see. She sighed to her self before putting on a smile and clippity clopping through the door after Twilight.
"Wait up there, Twi!"
