Chapter 3: Because of a Nail (or Frequency in this case)

Previous Chapter

Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at the four ponies in the inn. Jack looked at Wistala, damming for an explanation. “Don’t look at me like that,” she said in the draconic language, “they asked where you were and I just answered.” Jack raised an eyebrow at her.

“Jack,” Eric asked, “aren’t those ponies from your adventure several months ago.”

“Yes…yes they are.” Jack got up from his seat and walked toward his equine friends. “Twilight, Dash, Pinkie and,” pointing a finger at Talc, “aren’t you Obsidian’s sister.”

“Yes I am, and my name is Talc by the way.”

“I see,” Jack looked at Twilight. “Might I ask how you all got here?”

“Well three months after you left, I was able to make my own dimensional travel spell based on what Lim used and decided to come and have our owe adventure in Lore; seemed fair since you had one in Equestria.”

Twilight seemed to have more to say, but Jack interrupted her, “Twilight that’s good and all, but it’s been nearly nine months since the adventure I had in Equestria, not three.” Twilight and the others were taken back of what Jack said.

“But…how is that possible?” Twilight eyes moved rapidly trying to find reason in her mind.

“I don’t know,” Jack took a quick look around the inn. Lot of the people mummer to themselves and Serenity was nearly biting her nails, uncomfortable for having four ponies in her inn. “I think we need to take this conversation somewhere else.”  Jack lowered his arms and urged the girls to follow him.  Jack looked at Eric. “I’ll be back.”

“Na-uh I’m not missing this, I’m coming too.” Eric looked down at Zalin and said, “Come on Zalin you don’t want to miss this.”  Zalin stopped advancing his head towards the forgotten food, and looked at his rider.

He thought for awhile think of what he wanted to do. “Sure, why not.”  He leaped off the chair, and follow Eric and the others out of the inn.

*********************

Twilight walked out of the inn and Jack walked a head of her. “Follow me,” he told them.  As Jack led them to a different place in Falconreach, Twilight had hundred of questions to asked, but hold herself until Jack was ready. So for now, she took mental notes. Jack had his hair the same way he had same way as before but was wearing something else. He was wearing a light black shirt and pants, and he had two gauntlets that looked as if they were made to channel some sort of energy. Twilight looked at the other human, whose hair was the same color as Jack, but was a bit long and he was wearing red steel plate armor with white under covering. She then looked at the two dragons who were trailing behind them. There was a red dragon with sliver like wings walking by and talking to Wistala. Twilight couldn’t exactly hear what was being said, but it sound like a conversation of two slabs of granite grinning against each other.

“His name is Zalin,” the other human said out making Twilight jump a little, “and my name is Eric Thunderfang.”  Eric had a small smile on his face when Twilight looked at him, “You must be Twilight Sparkle, Jack told me about your curious nature. “

“I see,” Twilight looked back at the two dragons again and asked. “What language are they speaking?”

“That is the Draconic language, the native language which all dragons are born with.”  Eric listened in of what Zalin and Wistala were talking about, “Right now Wistala is reminding Zalin the four of you. Which makes sense Zalin was mostly asleep when Jack and Wistala told their adventure in Equestria, and sometimes he has a bad memory too.“

“And I don’t like be reminded of that,” Zalin spoke out from behind them. Twilight and Eric looked behind them to see Zalin glaring at them.

“Sorry buddy,” Eric smiled as he did a small wave at him. Twilight also did a small apology smile and looked forward notice that Jack was leading them to huge house.

“Jack,” Dash’s voice spoke out in a questionable tone, “is that your house?”

Jack answered, “Yep, I just moved in so please…,” there was a rainbow streak and his front door open and shut in the blink of an eye, “…be careful of the unpack items in there.”

Eric let out a low whistle, “You weren’t kidding Jack; she is really fast.”

“Don’t forget she also has bad hearing too.” Jack continued to the door and held it open, inviting Twilight, Pinkie, and Talc to come in. “Ladies, I would like to welcome you to my home, please mind the mess.”

As Twilight walked inside, she could defiantly tell that this house was brand new. The smell of wood glue and paint was still fresh in the air. Along with those two smells was the smell of hay, which was coming from the multiple wooded boxes that were laid throughout the hall. Dash was already rummaging through one of them and pulled out a small black gem stone.  “What’s this,” she asked in amazement as she held it up at eye level. It softly glowed as if something was about to happen, but Jack pluck it out of her hooves and held it firm in his hand.

“A very powerful and dangerous magical artifact,” he answered in hard tone. The artifact cease glowing and Jack put it back in the box. “Can you please not touch the items that are inside the boxes; I just got this house, and I don’t want to replace it just yet.”

Rainbow Dash looked down with her ears flat, “Sorry Jack.”

Jack felt his heart come out of his chest and slapped his face from the sight of Dash being mental hurt. “Look…I didn’t mean to be harsh. Just asked me before picking something up okay, I don’t want you to get hurt by your curiosity.”  Dash smiled and nodded her head.  “Now then, you girls want any food or water?”

“Na, the hay here is just fine,” Pinkie Pie answered. Everyone looked and saw Pinkie eating the packing hay out of one of the boxes.

“Pinkie,” Jack shouted out, “what did I just say.”

“I’m not touching any items, plus this box is empty.” She took more hay and chew. “Plus this hay is really good,” she said with her mouth full.

Jack just shook his head in disbelief, “Alright then, how about you three.” They all shook their heads. “Right, now Twilight, care to shed some light on how you all got her,” Jack sat down on top of one of the boxes. Twilight began her tale about how she took readings from the second portal Lim made and use them as a base for her spell. How for the first part she was able to make a gateway for the portal, but making it connect to another world and making it stable was as easy as she thought. She tried many different attempts but they all failed and she gave up after her friends convince her she was trying too hard.  However after a month pass and the invasion of Canterlot by the changeling was thwarted, Twilight had an idea of how to get her spell to work. She tried it and it work. She then told their small adventure they had in Doomwood and how they got here.

“I see,” Jack said. I must thank Angela later, and visit Zorbak too, he thought. “So Twilight…what ever happen to the changeling’s queen?”

“Huh?” Twilight wasn’t expecting that question. “Well, she was cast out to the far reaches of the borders of Equestria with the rest of her subjects.”

“So, she is still alive?” Twilight nodded her head. “Then you should head back and tell your captain of the guard to have your borders watch thoroughly.”

“What,” Dash objective, “we went too far to just pack up and head back to Equestria, we just got here.”

“Because you girls don’t belong here on Lore, it’s too dangerous.”

“Because of what happen in Doomwood? We were able to handle those skeletons that attack us…”

“But not the Bloodwolves,” Jack interrupted her. “Dash any new adventurer can defeat a group of skeleton…even Ash, but there are far worse monster here on Lore. You’re lucky the portal didn’t open into a dragon’s den.” Dash about to say something else, but Jack raised a hand stopping her. “Let me finish. If what Twilight told me is true, and that small Changeling War was your first war in a long time, then Lore is not the place for you to sight see. Especially here in Falconreach, the most notorious town to get attack about every other month,” Jack looked at everypony face. “I’m happy to see you and it will pain me if something happen to you.” Sighing he final spoke something he might regret, “However, if you can show me that you all can get back to Equestria at any time, then you all can stay for a now.”

Dash smiled at this, “Go ahead Twilight and show him your spell.” Twilight looked at Dash with small annoyance at being order, but she then closed her eyes and began to cast her spell. The wind in front of her swirl a little and the gateway from, and shortly after the portal was made.  Twilight opened her eyes expecting to see her library or maybe some other part of Ponyville, but instead it was the same part of Doomwood as before. Twilight’s month gap slightly in disbelief, and Jack raised an eyebrow.

“That’s an old path in Doomwood Twilight, not Equestria,” Jack stated.

“I…I don’t know what went wrong. I cast the spell exactly the same way as before.” Her eyes rabidly dance as she tried think of why then she realized something. “The frequency…I don’t have our world’s frequency.” She sat down, “I don’t have a way to get back to Equestria.”

“WHAT?!” Both Talc and Dash shouted out. Pinkie took another bit of hay as if nothing happen and Jack let out a small disappointed sigh.

“I’ll be back,” he said as he got up and head for the door, “I’m going to see someone who could probably help.”  He stopped at the door, “Eric, how about you show the girls around town. Introduce them to the townsfolk since it seemed they’re going to be here for a while.” He walked out and shut the door and left them all a bit confused.

“Well,” Wistala said, “Anyone up to see the park?”

**********************************

It wasn’t a long walk to Lim’s shop, and Jack was soon knocking on his door. “One moment,” Lim’s voice answered. There was a sound of fumbling equipment and the door open to the town’s science weapons expert who looked a bit messy than usual. “Ah, Jack. It’s nice to see you. Sorry about the mess, I was busy doing the work of SCIENCE.”  Lim open door wider and offered Jack to come in.

“I see that.” Jack walked inside and noticed Lim was taking apart the many lamps that help cast the Light Shield around Falconreach last week. “I have a favor to ask of you. Remember that portal you made to get me back from Equestria those many months ago?”

“Yes…why do you asked?”

“Well it seemed four ponies from there decided to come over here for a visit, and they have no way back. So I wonder if you can rebuild the portal using the stone you still have and formed a way for them to get back.”

“I would love to Jack, but I no longer have stone since you told me to destroy…”

Jack stopped him, “You don’t have to lie Lim. A few months ago Lime was taking about how you were experimenting on a stone that has a resistance to magic. So…do you still have it?”

Lim felt uneasy as Jack glared at him, waiting for an answer. “Look…I tried to destroy it like you told me, but nothing worked. My curiosity of how it worked took over, and I decided to make it into a small side project of mine. Unfortunately I could never figure out how and just decided to store it until my next idea to make it tell me its secrets.”

“So, that will be a yes then.”  Lim was surprised of the lack of anger in Jack’s voice. “Lim…if I wanted to stop you from studying the stone I would’ve done it the moment I heard Lime’s tale. But since there weren’t any destructive golems attacking the town at the time, I decided to let it pass. So can you or can you not rebuild the portal?”

“Of course I can, but…” Lim did some calculations in his head, “I used a lot of my metal to help build the lamps, so I don’t think I have enough metal to build it.”

“Let me guess, you need me to get more for you?”

“That would be helpful.”

“All right then, I should head over to Dr. Voltabolt to see if he has some to spare then.” Jack walked out of Lim’s shop and started to make his way to Surewood.

Lim watch Jack walked out then looked at the mess in the room. “Lime,” he shouted out, “I need you to clear out a space in this room.” Lim then walked down into his basement to the spot where he stored the mysterious stone. He opened a hidden cabinet and notice something was completely different. The symbol on the stone was now glowing. “That’s different,” he obviously stated out.

**********************

A few hours ago, back on Equestria when Rainbow Dash stick her hoof in the portal for the first time and made the energy wave, the energy wave went through both worlds. On Lore it caused three nearby undead to go crazy and made Lim’s stone to activate which send out a signal. That signal went back through the portal before it closed and went to the far reaches of the Equestria borders. In a cave somewhere another symbol on a stone object softly glowed to life.
